The night was dark, though sometimes the moving clouds allowed a star or two to be seen in the sky. The poor men held on to any bit of wood they could find. They called to the Marie (圣母玛丽亚) for
1
, but she was far
2
the reach of the human voice. At one o’clock in the morning, the water was getting
3
, and a strong
4
had begun to blow. Suddenly
5
were seen in the distance; another ship! The shouts of the swimmers were heard on board, and willing hands pulled them out of the water. The
6
of the ship that had so
7
arrived on the scene in time to save their lives was Ellen. What had brought her to the exact spot through the
8
and the pathless sea? Her captain had known
9
about the wreck (沉船) and had indeed attempted to sail away from it. But let him speak for himself.
“I was forced by the wind,” he said long afterwards, “to
10
my course (航道). Just as I did it, a small
11
flew across the ship once or twice and then
12
at my face. I took
13
of this until exactly the same thing happened at a
14
time, which caused me to think it rather
15
, while I was thus
16
it, the same bird for the third time, made its appearance and flew
17
in the same way as before. I was then
18
to change my course back to the original (原来的) one. I had not gone far
19
I heard strange noises; and when I tried to
20
where they came from, I found I was in the middle of people who had been shipwrecked (船只失事). I immediately did my best to save them.”

I was cleaning out an old box when an old card caught my eye : Queen City Casket Company . “What is it ?” I wondered . I
1
it over . There , in faded ink , was a hand-scrawled(手写的)
2
. Immediately my mind traveled
3
many years .
I was nine years old , walking down the cold , wet streets of Springfield , with a bag of magazines on my shoulder . On my
4
that day , I came to that Company finally , whose owner , Mr Rader , had always taken me there to ask his workers
5
they wanted any magazines .
Shaking off the

like a wet dog , I entered Mr Rader’s office . After a quick glance he
7
me over to the fire-place . Noticing the

10
. We pulled to a stop before a shoe store . Inside , a salesman

me with the finest pair of Oxfords I had
12
seen . I
13
about 10 feet tall when I got up
14
them . “ We’d like a pair of new socks too,” Mr Rader said .
Back in his office , Mr Rader took out a
15
, wrote something on it , and handed it to me . With
16
eyes , I read , “ Do to others as you would have them do to you .” He said affectionately (深情地), “Jimmy , I want you to
17
I love you”.
I said good-bye , and for the first time I
18
a flicker of hope that somehow things would be
19
. With people like Mr Rader in the world , there was hope , kindness and love , and that would always make a

Everyday on the way to work I drive down a street lined with pine trees. One tree in particular
1
my attention. It must have suffered some
2
. Part of its trunk grew nearly parallel to the ground, and then in an effort to
3
its own course of life, the trunk took a 90 degree turn
4
to stand tall and stretch toward the sun.
This tree became a
5
for me. Each day as I drove by, I saw this bent but determined tree and I would be
6
. It was a reminder to me that
7
I may not have had the best start in life, I could change
8
in the parts of my life at any time.
I was planning to stop one day to get a perfect
9
of my kindred-spirit (志趣相同的) tree. But that week I was
10
. After that busy week, I still didn’t take any action. Every time I drove by the tree I would
11
myself, “Tomorrow, I’11 stop tomorrow to take one.” Then one day, as I
12
by “my” tree, I glanced over, and much to my
13
found a sawed-off stump (树桩) where that symbolic tree had stood. Gone. I had
14
my plan until “tomorrow” and tomorrow proved to be too
15
.
A picture of a tree is not of great
16
. But my lesson rang through clearly
17
I found out one of my colleagues had been
18
with stage-four cancer. He may no longer have many
19
.
What have you been putting off? What would you do today if you knew you would
20
have the opportunity to do it again? Why not do those things that you have been putting off until tomorrow?

My husband and I went into a shop that sold handcrafted items in hopes of finding a few last-minute Christmas gifts.
There was a lot
1
. Every shelf and
2
was loaded with different crafters' handiwork. As I walked through the store, I noticed a wooden plaque(瓷花金属板) hanging on a wall. I turned to take
3
look and remember shaking my head "yes" at
4
printed on the plaque.
"Life isn't about waiting for the
5
to pass," the plaque proclaimed(宣布). "It's about learning to dance in the rain."
As I pulled my husband over and directed his attention to the plaque, I could see that he too
6
the simple lesson the plaque shared. How often in our daily lives had we put conditions on our
7
? When we get the house paid off, then we can be happy. When things settle down with the kids, then we'11 be able to do more together. There is so little joy for the here and now in the uncertainties of the
8
and thens.
Looking at the plaque, I found myself
9
to a hot and muggy day the summer before, when I unknowingly
10
the plaque's message. Light rain continued to fall as I walked out to get my mail. Water was still running
11
through the gutters(屋顶檐槽). I don't know what came over me,
12
I suddenly felt forced to do something a little crazy
13
my fifty-plus years.
I
14
my shoes and stockings and began walking barefoot through the water. It was deliciously
15
, heated by the pavement that had been
16
by the summer heat.
I'm sure my neighbors thought that I had
17
my last vestige of sanity(神智健全), but I didn't care. For in that moment, I was alive. I wasn't worried about bills, the future or any other day-to-day cares. I was
18
a gift — a pure and simple moment of joy!
The plaque now hangs in my living room, a Christmas gift from my husband. I walk past it multiple times each day and
19
pause to ask myself, "So, am I
20
in the rain?"
I think I am. I know I try to. One step at a time, I am learning to dance in the rain!

Last Sunday turned out to be more exciting than I had expected. We were at our grandparents’ house for a visit as
1
. My cousin and I had made an appointment to go in-line skating in the nearby park. He could do some neat stunts (特技)and had promised to show me
2
.
We managed to persuade our parents to
3
us go in-line skating on our own.
4
it soon started to rain and we had to seek shelter on the empty deck (place) of a block of flats. It really dampened my
5
.
Suddenly, we heard a
6
and saw a man dashing out of a lift. Just as he ran

us, we saw an old woman coming out of the same lift and crying, “Thief! Thief!” My cousin immediately went after the thief in his
8
. To be honest, I was extremely
9
at the beginning .Then I heard a honk. It was my uncle and aunt. I jumped into their car and told them about the robbery. We
10
off in the thief’s direction while my aunt stayed with the old woman.
Soon, we
11
up with my cousin. He was still in hot pursuit of the thief. Seeing his
12
, my uncle sped up and turned suddenly to the right to
13
just in front of the thief. The man was
14
and fell to the ground. My uncle got out of the car and
15
the man down with his body.
By this time, we could hear the siren of a police car approaching,
16
, my aunt had phoned the police and told them the
17
in which we were heading, so they were able to locate us .
We handed the thief over to the police officers who took down our names and
18
. They informed us that we would be called up to give our
19
. After that, we returned to the empty deck in our uncle’s car to
20
my aunt up .
When we reached there, the old woman had already left to give a report to the police. Our family members were all proud of us for our courageous deed.

My father and I were very close. I loved pleasing him, and he was always
1
of my success. If I
2
a spelling contest at school, he was on top of the
3
. Later in life whenever I got a promotion, I’d call my father
4
and he’d rush out to tell all his
5
. In 1970, when I was
6
as president of the Ford Motor Company, I don’t know
7
of us was more excited.
Like many native Italians, my parents were very open with their
8
and their love not only at home, but also in public. Most of my friends would
9
hug their fathers. But I hugged and kissed my dad at every
10
—nothing could have felt more
11
.
He was a(n)
12
man who was always trying new things. He was the first person in Allentown to buy a motorcycle.
13
, my father and his motorcycle didn’t
14
too well. He fell off it so often that he
15
it just a month after buying it. As a result, he never again
16
any vehicle with less than four wheels.
Because of that motorcycle, I wasn’t
17
to have a bicycle when I was growing up. Whenever I wanted to ride a bike, I had to
18
one from a friend. However, my father let me drive a car as soon as I
19
sixteen.
My father and I loved and
20
each other. We were close to each other all the time.

Just Help the Next Person
The only highway to go to work that we had to drive was closed down due to an accident on the bridge. A truck had hit the bridge and made it
1
for any traffic to go over it. So in order to get to
2
I had to go a number of miles out of my way.
Not being that
3
with this road and not knowing
4
all the pot holes in the road were, I topped a hill and right in my path was a big pot hole. I felt and heard the familiar sound of a flat tire. I
5
as far to the right as possible and stopped. I tried several times to change the tire, but
6
.
There I sat out in the country and no way to
7
with anybody. Just then, I looked in my rear view mirror and a
8
was pulling out of a pasture behind me. I was
9
and scared at the same time.
I was struggling to get the
10
out when this man in the pickup pulled in behind me. He got out to introduce himself and
11
to help me. When he got the spare out we discovered that the spare is also
12
. He told me he would take the tire and have it
13
and call my husband.
We got the tire fixed
14
he took me back to my car. My husband was there
15
us when we got back. The kind stranger stayed there and helped my husband
16
the tire. After they finished we
17
thanked him and offered to pay him for his
18
.
I will never forget his words, " your thanks is
19
enough pay and I just hope if this ever happens to my wife or daughter someone will be so
20
as to help them."

A land free from destruction(毁灭,破坏), plus wealth, natural resources, and labor supply —— all these were important
1
in helping England to become the center for the Industrial Revolution.
2
they were not enough. Something else was needed to start the industrial process. That "something special" was men ——
3
individuals who could invent machines, find new
4
of power, and establish business organizations to reshape society. The men who created the machines of the Industrial Revolution
5
from many backgrounds and many occupations. Many of them were
6
inventors than scientists. A man who is a pure scientist is primarily interested in doing his research
7
.He is not necessarily working
8
that his findings can be used. An inventor or one interested in applied science is all trying to make something that has a concrete use. He may try to solve a problem by
9
the theories
10
science or by experimenting through trial and error. Regardless of his method, he is working to obtain a
11
result: the construction of a harvesting machine, the burning of a light bulb(灯泡), or one of
12
other objectives. Most of the people who
13
the machines of the Industrial Revolution were inventors, not trained scientists. A few were both scientists and inventors. Even those who had little or no training in science might not have made their inventions
14
a groundwork had not been laid by scientists years

People who are cheerful and relaxed are less likely to suffer from colds. It's

that being full of vim(活力) and vigor(精力) helps the body
2
illnesses, say the researchers from Carnegie Mellon University(CMU) in Pittsburgh.
"We need to take more seriously the possibility that a
3
emotional style is a fighter player in disease risk," says psychologist Sheldon Cohen, the study's lead researcher.
In a previous study, Cohen and his colleagues found that people who
4
to be cheerful and lively were
5
likely to develop sniffles, coughs, and other cold symptoms (症状).
Those findings were interesting, but they didn't prove that a person's
6
affects whether he or she gets sick.
7
it was still possible that a person's underlying personality is
8
matters.
9
suggests, for instance, that certain people are naturally more likely to be outgoing(外向的)and
10
, with high self-respect and a sense of
11
over life. This would mean that who we are, not how we feel, finally decides our
12
of catching colds.
To figure out which mattered more (personality or
13
), the CMU team
14
193 healthy adults. The researchers talked to each person over the phone every evening for 2 weeks. They told the researchers about the positive and negative
15
they had experienced that day.
The results showed that everyone in the study was
16
likely to get infected.Their symptoms(征兆), however,

2 weeks.

Mr. Grey traveled a lot on business. He sold machines of different kinds to farmers. It was not really a very
1
job, but Mr. Grey had always been interested in
2
, and he was quite
3
with his life.
One of Mr. Grey’s problems was often
4
to stay when he reached some small places in the country. He did not expect great
5
and wonderful food, but he found it annoying when he was given a
6
room and when there was no hot water or good food after a long and
7
day.
Late one
8
evening, Mr. Grey arrived at a small railway station. The journey by
9
that day had not been
10
interesting, and Mr. Grey was cold and tired and hungry. He was
11
a simple but satisfying meal by a bright burning
12
, and then a hot bath and a comfortable
13
.
While he was walking to the taxi stand, he said to a local man who was
14
walking there, “ As this is my first
15
to this part of the country and I was in too much of a
16
to find out about hotels before I left home, I would very much like to know how many you have here?”
The local man answered, “ We have two.”
“And which of the two would you
17
me to go to ?” Mr. Grey asked then.
The local man scratched his
18
for a few moments and then answered, “ Well, it’s like this:
19
you go to, you’11 be
20
you didn’t go to the other.”
