It was Christmas 1961. I was teaching in a small town where my twenty-seven third graders eagerly1the great day of gift-giving in advance.
Each day the children produced some new2— strings of popcorn, handmade trinkets, and German bell. Through it all she remained alone,3from a distance, seemingly miles away. I wondered what4happen to this quiet child, once so happy, now suddenly so withdrawn. I hoped the festivities would5her. But nothing did. The students made the fried marbles(油炸玻璃弹子)and competed with one anther to bring the6ones.
The day of gift-giving finally came. We cheered over our handiwork as the presents were7. All along, she sat quietly watching. To see her smile, I had made a special bag for her. She opened it so slowly and carefully. I waited but she8. I had not passed through the wall of isolation she had9around herself.
After school I sat down in a chair, hardly10of what was happening, when she came to me with outstretched hands, bearing a small white box, and slightly soiled,11it had been held many times by12, childish hands. She said nothing. “For me?” I asked. She said not a word, but13her head. I took the box and cautiously opened it. There inside, glistening green, a fried marble14from a golden chain. Then I looked into that eight-year-old15and saw the question in her dark brown eyes. In a flash I knew — she had16it for her mother, who had died just three weeks before and would never hold her or brush her hair or17her childish joys or sorrows.
I meant it when I whispered, “Oh, Maria, it is so beautiful. Your mother would18it.” Neither of us could stop the19. She threw herself into my arms and we wept together. And for that brief moment I became her mother, for she had given me the greatest20of all: her trust and love.

This3until one morning, after a week of sleeping in his car, he walked4into a restaurant and ordered a big breakfast.
After eating his first good meal in5, he found himself6to the waiter, telling him he had lost his7. The waiter, who was also the owner, walked8the chair where the young man had been sitting. He bent down,9a $20 bill that looked 10it had fallen on the floor and said, “Son, you must have11this,” the owner said. The young man couldn’t believe his12! He quickly paid for the breakfast, left a13, bought gas with the change, and headed West.
On the way out of town, he began to understand14the fellow did. Maybe nobody dropped the money15. “Maybe that fellow just knew I was16and he helped me in a way that didn’t17 me.” Right then he made a promise to help others if he could.
Later, he worked very hard and became a rich man. Now, he lives near Kansas City. Each year he18thousands of dollars. He is known as the “Secret Santa” because at19time each year, he personally hands money out to those on the streets and at hospitals. “I’ve lived the story, so I know it certainly more blessed(带来快乐的) to give than to20, because it comes back to you many many times over,” he says. “It restores some faith in humanity.”

Fight against crime hots up
Forget about tanks, guns, and bombs - India’s latest weapon 1 in the garden. The bhut jolokia is the world’s 2 chili pepper(胡椒). Now the Indian Army has a plan to turn its seed into powder and use the 3 as a kind of natural teargas(催泪弹).
The army says the smoking hot powder - which some people claim can stop a charging(向前冲的) elephant – will help to break 4 riots and chase terrorists out of 5 spaces. Women might also be able to use the power to chase off (赶走)attackers.
6 to RB Srivastava, a director at New Delhi’s Defense Research and Development Organization: “This is 7 going to be an effective non-toxic(无毒的) weapon because its 8 can choke(使窒息)terrorists and 9 them out of their hideouts(藏身处). It would literally(确确实实地) choke them.”
On the other 10 of the world, in New York, police 11 to track(追踪) down a “vampire(吸血鬼) thief” who tried to steal a taxi driver’s 12. Police say that man got into the taxi and asked to 13 to a neighborhood in New York City. 14 they arrive, he pointed a gun 15 the taxi driver and told the driver to give him al1 his money.
When the taxi driver tried to fight 16 the gunman, the man bit(咬) him at least five times 17 the neck, arm, and back. After biting the driver, the man ran away 18 money.
If only the taxi driver 19 some bhut jolokia powder, he might have been able to save himself from 20 and to get his money back!

Perhaps you’ve attended some parties. But like New York, where a party or dinner often1 business with pleasure, a Washington party is a2 part of the business of politics, the business of making3 connections.
Some Washington parties have a4 aura (气氛) about them, depending on who gives them and who is there, but most parties are open-house5 in fact, with the hosts not knowing most of the6 who are there.
I went to a few of these parties7 I wanted to see the inside of some of the Washington mansions (公馆) I had8 so much about. Almost every time during the evening some man would come close to talk with me9, we didn’t know each other at all. Such a10 exchange clearly proves “a gathering of friends”11 Washington party standards. You don’t even need an12 to attend many Washington parties. You just have to know about them. No Washington hostess would13 her servants to ask you who you were. Most of the bigger parties, those with 300 or 400 guests,14 to impress somebody, and Washingtonians15.
Most members of the Congress ,for example,16 middle-class backgrounds in smaller communities17 the country. They are dazzled (眼花缭乱的) by18. They are dazzled by big names. They are ready to help Washington19 hostesses. They go along with them because they are good friends or they don’t notice that they20 or they don’t care if they are.

It was a cold winter. The day my husband fell to his death, it started to snow, just1any November day. His2, when I found it, was lightly covered with snow. It snowed almost every day for the next four months, while I sat on the couch and watched it3. One morning, I walked slowly4and was surprised to see a snow remover clearing my driveway and the bent back of a woman clearing my walk. I dropped to my knees and crawled back upstairs,5those good people would not see me. I was6. My first thought was, how would I ever7them? I didn’t have the8to brush my hair,9clear someone’s walk.
Before Jon’s death, I felt proud that I10asked for favors. I identified myself by my competence and11. So who was I if I was no longer capable? How could I12myself if I just sat on the couch every day and watched the snow fall?
Learning to receive the love and13from others wasn’t easy. Friends cooked for me and I cried. Finally, my friend Kathy said, “Mary, cooking for you isn’t a14for me; it makes me feel good to be able to do something for you.”
Over and over, I heard15words from the people who supported me during those16days. One wise man told me, “You aren’t doing nothing because being fully open to your17may be the hardest work you will ever do.”
I am not the person I18was, but in many ways I have changed for the19. I’ve been surprised to learn that there is incredible freedom coming form20one’s worst fear and walking away whole. I believe there is strength, for sure, in accepting a dark period of our life.

During college, I took a history class to fulfill a requirement.
The professor was a1 fellow with red hair. He would walk2 into the room wearing his winter coat, once not even3 the hat during the lecture. He could not feel free in class and controlled the4 just by looking through his glasses at his students.
So I5 a little game for myself. I would try to find something in his lecture to ask him an intelligent question about,6 me to pay attention. He was obviously pleased to have a question to answer. In fact, his answers were always7 .
I continued to do this every day and found myself actually enjoying the material. The professor seemed to become more8 and some of the other students even9 from time to time. My little game had saved me from being bored, as it was designed to do. And, I learned quite a bit about ancient world history. In spite of his strange10 , he was indeed quite an expert in his field.
On the last day of the class we gathered our11 and headed for the door. The shy, red-haired professor stepped directly in front of me,12 I reached the door, and put his hand out. He said, “I want to thank you for making my classes so interesting,” as he shook my hand warmly and13 for the first time. I was so14 . To me, it had been a pleasant way to pass the time. I had no idea that all of my questions asked in class had any effect on him or the others at all.
Each of us, through the things we say and do, and the kindness we can freely15, can have a great effect not just on our own experiences, but on those of others.
