Long long ago, a little boy loved to play around an apple tree. He climbed to the tree, ate the apples, and took a nap under the shadow.... He loved the tree1the tree also loved him.
Later, the boy grew up and2. The tree was sad. One day, the boy returned and the tree was3. “Come and play with me,” the tree said. “I have to work for my family. We need a4for shelter. Can you help me?” The boy said. “Cut off my branches to build your house,” the tree said. So the boy cut all the branches5the tree and left happily. The tree was glad to see him happy, but the boy never came back. The tree was again6and sad.
Once the boy came again. “Come and play with me!” the tree said7. “I want to go8to relax myself. Can you give me a boat?” The boy said. “Use my9to build your boat. You can sail far away and be happy.” The tree said. So the boy cut the tree trunk to make a boat. He went sailing and never showed up for a long time.
Finally, the boy10after he left for so many years. “Sorry, my boy, I have nothing for you,” the tree said. “The only thing11is my dying roots,” the tree said with tears. “I don’t need much now, just a place to rest. I am tired after all these years.” The boy12.
“Good! Old tree root is the best place to sit13. Come, sit down with me and rest.” The boy sat down and the tree was glad and 14with tears.
This is a story about everyone. The tree is our parents. When we are15, we love to play with them. When we grow up, we16them, and only come to them when we need something or we are in trouble. However, parents will17be there and give everything that they could .You may think that the boy is cruel18the tree but that’s how all of us are19our parents in real life. Shouldn’t we give more20to our parents?

After leaving the9family, I passed the tree and my curiosity got the10of me. I asked him, who11me to the car, “Before we went in,12did you stop by the tree earlier”

Perhaps the most interesting person I have ever met is an Italian professor of philosophy who teaches at the University of Pisa.1I last met this man eight years ago, I have not forgotten his2qualities. First of all, I respected his3to teaching. Because his lectures were always well-prepared and clearly delivered, students crowded into his classroom. His followers liked the fact that he4what he taught. Furthermore, he could be counted on(依赖) to explain his ideas in an5way, introducing such aids to6as oil paintings, music, and guest lecturers. Once he7sang a song in class in order to make a point clear.8, 1 admired the fact that he would talk to students outside the classroom or talk with them9the telephone. Drinking coffee in the cafe, he would easily make friends with students. Sometimes he would10a student to a game of chess.11, he would join student groups to discuss a variety of12:agriculture, diving and mathematics. Many young people visited him in his office for13on their studies; others came to his home for social evenings. Finally, I was14by his lively sense of humor. He believed that no lesson is a success15, during it, the students and the professor16at least one loud17. Through his sense of humor, he made learning more18and more lasting. If it is19that life makes a wise man smile and a foolish man cry,20my friend is indeed a wise man.

My son Joey was born with club feet(天生特厚的畸形脚). The doctors assured us that with treatment he would be able to walk 1, but would never run very well. The first three years of his life were2in surgery(手术). By the time he was eight, you wouldn’t know he had a3when you saw him walk.
The children in our neighborhood ran around as most children do during 4, and Joey would jump right in,run and play, too. We5told him that he probably wouldn’t be able to 6as well as the other children. So he didn’t know.
In seventh grade he 7to go out for the cross country team. Every day he8with the team. He worked harder and ran 9than any of the others — perhaps he sensed that the 10that seemed to come naturally to so many others did not come naturally to him. 11the entire team runs, only the top seven runners have the potential (潜能) to 12points for the school. We didn’t tell him he probably would never make the team, so he didn’t know.
He 13to run four to five miles a day, every day — even the day he had a 103 degree fever. I was14 , so I went to look for him after school. I found him15 all alone. I asked him how he felt. "Okay," he said. He had two more16 to go. The sweat ran down his face and his eyes were glassy from his fever. 17he looked straight ahead and kept running.
Two weeks later, the names of the team runners were18. Joey was number six on the list. Joey had made the team. He was in 19grade — the other six team members were all eighth?graders. We never told him he shouldn’t20 to make the team. We never told him he couldn’t do it...so he didn’t know. He just did it.

I told my friend Graham that I often cycle t miles to my company, but unfortunately there is a big hill on my way. He replied, “You are 1.” He explained that I should be thankful for the extra exercise that the hill provided.
My attitude to the hill has now changed. I used to2as I approached it, but now I think that this hill will exercise my heart and lungs and it will3me to lose weight and get fit. This hill is my friend. I even feel sorry for those who4to go to a gym and sit on exercise bicycles5I can get the same value for free.
We cannot achieve anything with an easy life. Helen Keller was the first deaf and blind person to gain a university6. She wrote, “Character cannot be developed 7. Only through experiences of trial and 8can the soul be strengthened, ambition 9and success achieved.”
One of the main factors of success in life is our attitude towards adversity (逆境).10we face hardships, problems and difficulties. We cannot11the adversity, but we can choose our attitude towards it. Douglas Bader was twenty-one when he had both legs cut off following a flying12. He was determined to fly again and became one of the leading 13in Britain. He said, “Don’t listen to anyone 14tells you that you can’t do this or that. That’s nonsense. Go to school, and join in all the games you can. Make up your mind, and you’11 succeed.”
Great people rise from adversity. Their common quality is that they did not become 15in face of adversity. They chose to be positive. They took on the challenge and they won.

The Blind Boy
A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat(帽子) by his feet. He held up a 1 which said: “I am blind, please help.” There were only a few 2 in the hat.
A man was walking by. He took a few coins from his 3 and dropped them into the hat. He 4 took the sign, turned it around and wrote some words. He 5 the sign 6 everyone who walked by would see the new words.
Soon the hat began to 7. A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy.
That afternoon the man who had 8 the sign came to see 9 things were. The boy 10 his footsteps and asked, “Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you write?”
The man said, “I only wrote the truth. I said what you said in a different way, 11 .” What he had written was: “Today is a(n) 12 day and I cannot see it.”
Do you think the first sign and the second sign were saying the same thing?
13 both signs told people the boy was blind. But the first sign simply said the boy was blind. The second sign told people they were so 14 that they were not blind.
Should we be surprised that the second sign was more 15?
Be thankful for what you have. 16 life gives you 100 reasons to cry, show life that you have 1000 reasons to 17. Face your past without regret. 18 your present with confidence (自信). Prepare for the 19 without fear. Keep the faith and 20 the fear.

Dear Lucy,
My words won’t heal(治愈)the18. But your own words can.

That night, I 19the phone and dialed her number.
“Looks like the snow is melting(融化), ” I said. “Spring was just 20the corner.”
