Basketball is a sport enjoyed by millions of people in at least 100 countries. It’s one of the 1sports in the world. It began in 1891.
Dr. James A. Naismith, the father of basketball, was a teacher of YMCA training school. It trained the people to work in YMCAs. Officials at the school were2about the low attendance during the3months. They4that people didn’t attend then5the school did not have a good sports program in winter. So they asked Dr. Naismith for6. He came up with a new indoor game.
Naismith studied games being played at that time. He found that all the most7games used a ball. So a ball would be part of his new game, he decided. But8the ball or hitting it would be too9for indoors. So he put two10up on the poles. The players had to try to 11a ball into them. Naismith then made thirteen12for the game. Twelve of them are still in13today. Just seven14after the game began professional basketball teams were15. And that’s how basketball was born.

In 1982, I was a young marketing person in a company in Mumbai. I had a very senior colleague named Paul, who taught me how to1 marketing effectively and how to deal with life2.
It was one of those3days…management, sales calls, planning my travel schedule, booking hotels, arranging appointments and the 4was endless. By the end of the day, I was not only exhausted but was getting5. It was at this time that Paul invited me to his house to have a rest.
We made our way to Paul’s house. Although6after a day’s hard work, I was excited to chat with Paul and7his rich experience in marketing. As we entered his house8the main door, Paul started singing his favourite song, I have a dream. I was in no9to listen to his song. I only wanted to hear about how he handled10sales calls.
As I leaned over Paul’s shoulder to tell him that, two young girls walked up to Paul and hugged him. They couldn’t walk steadily, and neither could they talk11 , but their faces were full of12and they also sang a song: No mummy’s kisses only daddy’s smiles; nobody wants us, and daddy hugs us tonight.
I was watching what was going on, totally13in the beautiful singing, when Paul tapped me on the shoulder and asked me to sit down.14to know, I asked Paul who these girls were. To my15, Paul told me they were his daughters and they were born as “16children” (mentally disabled). His wife died and he was both Mother and Father to them.
I was moved to tears. In the office, no one knew what Paul was 17in his personal life. He never looked for 18from his friends and colleagues. On the contrary, he always helped us at the office. And being head of the Department, he always19us to move forward in life.
Paul’s life has been a great20to me. If a man can smile through these troubles, nothing can prevent him from achieving success in work or life.

People always say that if God closed a door in front of you, there must be a window opened for you. Yes, people always say that, but1is the window for me?
I am not disappointed, just a little worried2as my roommate said, “ Why are you angry with yourself once you3to do anything?” I have no idea. I just can’t4me if I can’t understand some easy things. Currently, I just feel 5 with myself because I couldn’t finish the assignment on the lab, and what was6worse was that actually I did not understand what the7was! Fiona asked me why I didn’t8for help. The problem is that if I have to ask some silly questions, I will feel9.
Before I came here I was confident. But I have totally lost it. Sometimes I can’t 10find the right words; sometimes I am too shy to11others. I have to admit that I am12.
The wisest people are always13who can take advantage of others’ wisdom. But I was so stupid as to close myself and14a lot of time soaking inside the workbook,15made me more confused. Why can’t I follow the sentence? I am16to get help the next time I have any questions. I can17I am not smart, but I shouldn’t hide it. I must18it as soon as possible.19I will have to waste much more time on it—just like tonight.
Difficulties always go with me. Go20! I can make it.

Several years ago, I worked in a company as a driver. One day in the company when I was cleaning my1 which was getting dirty from running outside, I noticed the owner’s elderly father making his2 to his grandson. The old man was fond of fishing all his life. He usually stayed at home because of his old age, but this time he3 to ask the kid to take him fishing. The grandson said, ‘I’m not taking you! It’s4than taking a kid.’
His answer broke my heart. I stopped working immediately and headed back home. I took everything I needed and then5 . On the way I stopped at a store and bought a bobber (钓鱼的浮子). When I got to the company, I6 the old man to go fishing near the river.
When we got there, I put him in the chair at the edge of the7 , cast the line, and handed him the fishing pole (鱼竿). It wasn’t long before the bobber started to dance; he handed the pole to me. I took the fish off, cast, and8 handed the pole to him. This went on, one fish after another, for over an hour until he told me he was9 and needed to go home.
When I got him home, I gave the fish to his daughter-in-law with instructions to make sure he got them for dinner and then I10 . Two weeks later, the old man died. His family told me later that all he talked about during that time was his last fishing trip.
Whenever you get the11 , don’t forget to stay with your grandpa. Someday, you may be in the same place and you’11 want your family to12 you too.

In a national spelling contest in America,an 11-year-old girl was asked to spell a certain word. But with her1voice the judges were not sure whether she spelled the word with the letter A or E. They talked it over and2decided to simply ask her what she had said. By now, the girl knew she had3the word. But instead of lying, she told the truth that she had said the4letter—so she lost the contest.
As the girl walked off the 5,the entire audience stood to their feet clapping to applaud her6. Later, dozens of newspaper reporters wrote about this 11-year-old girl’s honesty, even when it7her the contest. But the fact is that she8the biggest contest that day: the contest of her 9 .
Probably the biggest test of our character and honesty is that we would do if we knew we would never get10. This young girl could easily have11and nobody would have known it but herself. But that’s just it: She would know she did wrong. It’s been said, “If you12, you make yourself cheap.” This young girl was strong and smart enough to prize her own13and character more than the prize from a spelling14. Her respect for herself was more important than any15others might give her for winning a contest. She knew she would have to live with herself and the16she made in that moment will have long-lasting influence.
It’s so true that the choices you make today17what you are tomorrow. Our children will18our behavior much more than our advice. So if we want them to19to be honest,we must show them the way by being honest ourselves. Remember, our kids are20what we do and how we live even when we don’t think they see or know.

The most extraordinary thing was that, except one or two 14, there was not a bird in 15. No one was able to know why —16two policemen arrived on the scene. They walked all around the area for a while and then went over near the railroad tracks beside a big board advertisement(广告)for a 17. Since the noise seemed to be coming from around there, they climbed up and found that two loudspeakers had been 18behind the advertisement. The bird noises were being broadcast to19attention to the film advertisement.
The cinema that made this advertisement was 20to take the loudspeakers away, because they caused trouble and people were tired of them.

There was once a famous king whose name was Tamerlane. Like Alexander the Great, he 1 to become the master of the whole world. So he raised a great 2 and made war on other countries. He conquered(征服,打败) many kings and 3 many cities. But at last his army was beaten; and Tamerlane escaped alone from the field of 4.
For a long time he wandered in 5 from place to place. His enemies were 6 him. He was about to lose all hope.
One day he was 7  under a tree, thinking of his failure. He had now been a wanderer for twenty days. He couldn’t 8 any longer. Suddenly he saw a small object climbing up the trunk (树干) of the tree. He looked more 9 and saw it was an ant, 10(麦粒) as large as itself.
There was a 11
“You are 12 , Mr. Ant,” he said, “but you are carrying something that is too heavy for you.” Just as he 13, the ant lost its footing and fell to the ground. But it 14 held on to the grain of wheat. Tamerlane15 the little insect. It tried the second time, the third time ... the twentieth time — but always with the same16 . Then it tried the twenty-first time. 17, one little step at a time, it climbed across the rough place where it had 18 so often. The next minute it climbed 19 into its home, carrying the grain of wheat. “Well done!” said Tamerlane, “you’ve taught me a lesson. I, too, will try, try again, 20 I succeed.”
And this he did.
