A high school history teacher once told me, "If you make one close friend in school, you will be the most fortunate. A true friend is someone who stays with you for life."1 teaches that he was right. Good friendship is just not easily2.
It is possible that we simply do not stay in one place long enough for a 3 friendship to 4 .However, there can be5disagreement on the need for each of us to think carefully about the kind of friendship we want.
To most of us, friendships are considered very important, but we need to be clear in our 6 the kinds of friendship we want. Are they to be close or7at arm's length? Do we want to8ourselves or do we want to walk on the surface? For some people , many friendships on the surface are 9 enough-- and that's all right. But on some points, we need to10that our expectations are the same as our friends' expectations. The sharing11experience12our tears as well as our dark dreams is the surest way to deepen friendships. But it13be undertaken slowly and carried on only if there are14of interest and action in return.
What are some of the 15 of friendship? The greatest is the attraction to expect too much time or too soon. Deep relationships16time. Another "major difficulty" is the selfishness to think one "possesses" the other, including his time and attention. Similarly, friendships17actions in return . In18words, you must give as much as you take. Finally there is a question of taking care of . Unless you spend19time together , talking on the phone, writing letters, doing things together, friendships will die20.

My friend had mentioned that her father had a lot of children’s toys that he was looking to give away. She knew I had a three-year-old daughter so she thought of me first. I told her I would 1it if I could get some nice things for my daughter, which I wouldn’t otherwise have been able
to2.
When I met her father, he began to explain that he was3once too and that he would hate to4things that could be very5. At first, he thought of taking everything to the Salvation Army but then he6to see if anyone he knew could use them first.
When he was7me around, I saw a bed, a slide(滑板),a kitchen set and many other things that made me surprised. As my eyes were wide and beginning to tear up a bit, he told me not to feel guilty. He said I was8him by getting rid of them.
As I was looking around, I did feel guilty, but I tried to remain more grateful than guilty because he told me to. Every time I tried to9him for giving my daughter all these10things, he would thank me right back and was grateful that these toys would be put to good use.
So, sometimes when we are helped by others, the others that helped us are helped as a side –effect. In the11of charity , it makes sense to feel grateful, but guilt is just as normal, I know we could have lived without a slide, which is why I do feel guilty, but I am grateful all the same because my daughter12enjoys all these nice things!

When we were in the middle of the lake, a 7 wind came all of a sudden. The boat was hit 8. Dad was always at his best in any9, but at this moment he10.
"John!11!" he shouted in a trembling voice, with the tiller still in his hands.
In my memory he could fix any12. He was the one I always13for strength and security. Before I could respond, a14 of water got into the boat. I rushed to the tiller 15it was too late. Another huge wall of water 16the boat in a minute. We were thrown into the water, and Dad was struggling aimlessly. At that moment, I felt fiercely 17of him.
I swam to Dad 18and assisted him in climbing onto the hull(船壳)of the boat. Upon sitting on the hull, Dad was a little awkward about his flash of 19. "It's all right, Dad. We are safe now," I comforted him.
That was the first time Dad had counted on me in a moment of emergency. More importantly, I found it was my turn to start20for my father.

I recently heard a story about a famous scientist who had made several very important medical breakthroughs. He was being interviewed by a reporter who asked him1he thought he was able to be so much more2than the average person.
He3that it all came from a(n)4with his mother that occurred when he was about 2. He had been trying to remove milk from the fridge when he5the slippery(光滑的) bottle, its contents running all over the kitchen floor.
When his mother came in,6shouting at him or giving him a lecture, she said, "Robert, what a great and wonderful7you have made! I have8seen such a huge pool of milk. Well, the damage has already been9. Would you like to get down and 10in the milk for a few minutes before we clean it up?"
Indeed, he did. After a few minutes, his mother said, "Robert, whenever you make a mess like this, eventually you have to11everything to its proper order. So, how would you like to do that? We could use a sponge(海绵), a towel or a mop. Which do you prefer?" He chose the sponge.
His mother then said, "You know, what we have here is a12experiment in how to effectively carry a big milk bottle with two13hands. Let's go out in the back yard and fill the bottle with water and see if you can make it." The little boy learned that if he14the bottle at the top near the lip with both hands, he could carry it without dropping it. What a wonderful15!
This scientist then remarked that it was at that moment that he knew he didn't need to be16to make mistakes. Instead, he learned that mistakes were just17for learning something new, which is,18, what scientific experiments are all about. Even if the experiment "doesn't19," we usually learn something20from it.

The park bench was deserted as I sat down to read beneath an old willow tree. Not1with life, I was down. A young boy out of breath2me, all tired from play. He stood right before me with his head tilted(倾斜的) down,3with great excitement,“Look what I found!”

a small smile and then shifted away. But instead of7he sat next to my side and placed the flower to his nose and declared with8,“It surely smells pretty and it’s beautiful, too. That’s why I9it; here, it’s for you.”

I heard my voice shake, tears shone like the sun15I thanked him for picking the very best one. He smiled, and then ran off to play,16of the effect he’d had on my day.
I sat there and17how he managed to see a self-pitying woman beneath an old willow tree. How did he know of my self-indulged(放纵的)18? Perhaps from his heart, he’d been blessed with true19.
Through the eyes of a blind child, at last I could see, the problem was not connected with the world; the problem was me. And for all of those times I myself had been blind, I vowed to see20, and appreciate every second that’s mine.

The story happened years ago, when my daughter was still little.
I was driving across the country with my daughter to1my husband. Since I intended to get to my destination before supper time, I drove2for a long time without a stop. Then after driving for many miles, I became tired and needed to stop for a break to get3.
I found a rest area. It was mostly deserted, in a quiet area of the highway. I parked the car and carried my4into the restroom. When I came out I saw a middle-aged5wandering around. Feeling6about that, I asked the lady. What 7me was: they were waiting for us!
The lady told me that she and her husband wanted to see us safely back into our8. She explained that sometimes rest areas could be a9place for a young lady like me. She told me that she had a daughter almost my age, so they wanted to make sure that I got safely back on my way.
I was very touched by their 10 . Being young, and probably naive to the potential 11of rest areas, it had never occurred to me that there was any possibility of something going wrong. I12them for their kindness. My daughter and I continued our journey and13our destination safely.
I never got their names but years have passed and their kindness is still not14. Sometimes angels come in make-up and just because you can’t see their15it doesn’t mean they aren’t angels.
