My best friend is Cocoa, and I live in a senior-citizen apartment. Cocoa is a ten-year-old dog and I am a sixty-nine-year-old lady, so you can see we both qualify as1citizens.
He is a2companion. He does many amusing things that make me3, and when that happens, he is so delighted4he just keeps it up.
But one afternoon, Cocoa started acting strangely. I was sitting on the floor playing with him,5he started pawing and smelling at the right side of my6. He had never done anything like this ever before, and I told him, “No.” To Cocoa, one “no” is usually7, but not that day. He stopped briefly, and then8ran toward me, throwing his entire weight at the right side of my chest. He crashed into me and I cried in9, falling down to the floor. Soon after this, I felt a lump (肿块). I went to my doctors, and after X-rays10and lab work were done, they told me I had cancer.
When cancer starts, a11of calcium (钙) builds. Then the lump or cancer attaches itself to this wall. When Cocoa jumped on me, the force of the impact broke the lump away from the wall. This made it possible for me to12the lump.
I had a complete mastectomy (乳房切除术) and the cancer has not13to any other part of my body. The doctors told me if the cancer had gone undetected even six more months, it would have been too14.
Was Cocoa15of just what he was doing? I’11 never really know. What I do know is that Cocoa not only shares his life with me, he has also made sure that I will be around to share my life with him!

I got up and dressed, with my violin under my jacket, and went out into the streets to try my luck. I wandered about for1, looking for a likely spot, 2as though I were about to commit a crime. Then I stopped3under a bridge near the station and 4to have a try.
I felt tense and nervous. One moment I was 5the hurrying crowds ,6I stood apart, my back to the wall, my hat on the side of the street7me , the violin under my chin.
The first 8I played were loud and unskilled, then they9down and began to run more smoothly. 10,I was neither caught nor told to shut up. 11, nobody took any notice at all. Then an old man without stopping12threw a penny into my hat, as if getting rid of some guilty evidence.
Other pennies followed, slowly13steadily , dropped by14who appeared not to see or hear me. It seemed too easy, like a secret15.
I16there for several days , gradually getting the17of the trade by trial and error(反复试验). It was not a good thing,18, to let the hat fill up with money; nor was it wise to empty it completely. Placing a couple of pennies in the hat to19the thing going soon became a20rule.

Never Save Something Beautiful for That Special Day
Years ago I was talking with a classmate in Sydney. At the time his wife had just passed away not too long ago. He told me while going through her things, he found a silk scarf 1in a designer store when they had traveled to New York City. The scarf was beautiful, with elegant 2, and a high price tag still hanging. His wife begrudged wearing it; she was 3it for a special day.
He 4at that moment; I didn’t say anything either. After a long pause he said: “Never save something beautiful for that special day. Each 5day is a special day.”
Whenever I 6what he had said, I would put down the things I was doing to grab a novel, turn on the music and lie down on the couch to 7some time for myself. I would appreciate the glorious scenery of the Tanshui River through a French window, 8the dust gathered on the glass. I would take my wife out to 9 , not thinking what to do with the meal already cooked. Life should be the experience we truly cherish, not days we just have to endure.
One time I shared the above conversation with a lady. When I saw her again, she told me that she no longer 10the beautiful china in a cabinet. She had thought to save them for a special day, only to discover that it never 11came. “Future”, “someday” are not contained in her 12any more. If there are things that are pleasant or make her complacent, she wants to hear or see them now.
We often hope to gather with old friends, but always say, “let’s find a(n) 13.” We often want to hug our grown children, but always wait for the appropriate moment. We often want to write to our spouses to express our strong affection or to show our deep admiration, but always tell ourselves that there is no need to 14. In fact, each morning when we open our eyes, we should tell ourselves that this is a special day. Each day, each minute is so incredibly 15.

My First Day
I was still shy in the presence of a crowd. And my first day at the new1made me a laughing stock(笑柄) of the classroom .I was sent to the blackboard to write my 2. I knew my name, and knew how to write it , but standing at the blackboard with the 3of so many pupils on my back made me4inside and I was unable to write a single letter.
“Write your name,” the teacher called to me. I 5the white chalk to the blackboard, as I was about to write, my mind went blank, I could not remember my name,6the first letter. Somebody laughed and I became 7 .
“Just forget us and write your name,” the teacher called and walked to my side,8at me to give me confidence.
“What is your name?” she asked.
“Richard,” I9
“Then write it.”
I turned to the blackboard and lifted my hand to write, but then I was10again. I tried to 11my senses but I could remember nothing. I realized how totally I was12and I grew weak and leaned my hot forehead13the cold blackboard. The room burst into a loud14and my muscles froze. I sat and15myself. Why did I always appear so dumb 16I was called upon to perform in a crowd? I knew how to write as well as any other pupil in the classroom, and there was no17I could read better than any of them, and I could talk 18when I was sure of myself. Then why did strange19make me freeze? I sat with my ears and neck 20, hearing the pupils around me whisper, hating myself.

He 12,” I no longer want to cut stone. I would be the sun; that would be pleasant.” The wise man 13, “Be the sun.” And he was the sun. But the sun was warmer than the blacksmith, than a stone, than a stone-cutter, and he complained, “I do not 14 this. I would be the moon. It 15 cool.” The wise man spoke yet again, “Be the moon.” And he was the moon. This is warmer than being the sun,” 16 he, “for the light from the sun 17on me ever. I do not want to be the moon. I would be a 18 again. That, indeed, is the 19 life.” But the wise man replied, “I am 20of your changing. You wanted to be the moon; the moon you are and you will remain.”

One afternoon, many years ago, I went to pick up my mother from work. I got there a little early so I1the car by the roadside, across the street from where she worked, and2her.
As I looked outside the car window3my right, there was a small park4I saw a little boy around two years old,5freely on the grass as his mother watched him from a short distance. The boy had a big smile on his face6he had just been set free from some sort of prison. The boy would then fall to the grass, get up and without7run as fast as he could again, still with a smile on his face, as if8had happened.
However, with kids (especially at the early age),when they fall down, they don’t perceive their falling down as a9, but instead, they treat it as a learning experience, as just another10. They feel compelled to try and try again11they succeed. The answer must be that they have not12“falling down” with the word “failure” yet. Thus they don’t know how to feel the state which13failure. What’s more, they probably think that it is perfectly Okay to fall down, and that it’s not14to do so. In other words, they give themselves15to make mistakes subconsciously. Thus they remain16.
While I was touched by the boy’s persistence, I was17touched by the manner in which he ran. With each18, he looked so confident and so natural. No19of fear, nervousness, or being discouraged — as if he didn’t20the world around him. His only aim was to run freely and to do it as effectively as he could. I learned a lot from that observation and experience, and have successfully brought that lesson with me in my many pursuits in life.
