My best friend is Cocoa, and I live in a senior-citizen apartment. Cocoa is a ten-year-old dog and I am a sixty-nine-year-old lady, so you can see we both qualify as
1
citizens.
He is a
2
companion. He does many amusing things that make me
3
, and when that happens, he is so delighted
4
he just keeps it up.
But one afternoon, Cocoa started acting strangely. I was sitting on the floor playing with him,
5
he started pawing and smelling at the right side of my
6
. He had never done anything like this ever before, and I told him, “No.” To Cocoa, one “no” is usually
7
, but not that day. He stopped briefly, and then
8
ran toward me, throwing his entire weight at the right side of my chest. He crashed into me and I cried in
9
, falling down to the floor. Soon after this, I felt a lump (肿块). I went to my doctors, and after X-rays
10
and lab work were done, they told me I had cancer.
When cancer starts, a
11
of calcium (钙) builds. Then the lump or cancer attaches itself to this wall. When Cocoa jumped on me, the force of the impact broke the lump away from the wall. This made it possible for me to
12
the lump.
I had a complete mastectomy (乳房切除术) and the cancer has not
13
to any other part of my body. The doctors told me if the cancer had gone undetected even six more months, it would have been too
14
.
Was Cocoa
15
of just what he was doing? I’11 never really know. What I do know is that Cocoa not only shares his life with me, he has also made sure that I will be around to share my life with him!

I got up and dressed, with my violin under my jacket, and went out into the streets to try my luck. I wandered about for
1
, looking for a likely spot,
2
as though I were about to commit a crime. Then I stopped
3
under a bridge near the station and
4
to have a try.
I felt tense and nervous. One moment I was
5
the hurrying crowds ,
6
I stood apart, my back to the wall, my hat on the side of the street
7
me , the violin under my chin.
The first
8
I played were loud and unskilled, then they
9
down and began to run more smoothly.
10
,I was neither caught nor told to shut up.
11
, nobody took any notice at all. Then an old man without stopping
12
threw a penny into my hat, as if getting rid of some guilty evidence.
Other pennies followed, slowly
13
steadily , dropped by
14
who appeared not to see or hear me. It seemed too easy, like a secret
15
.
I
16
there for several days , gradually getting the
17
of the trade by trial and error(反复试验). It was not a good thing,
18
, to let the hat fill up with money; nor was it wise to empty it completely. Placing a couple of pennies in the hat to
19
the thing going soon became a
20
rule.

Never Save Something Beautiful for That Special Day
Years ago I was talking with a classmate in Sydney. At the time his wife had just passed away not too long ago. He told me while going through her things, he found a silk scarf
1
in a designer store when they had traveled to New York City. The scarf was beautiful, with elegant
2
, and a high price tag still hanging. His wife begrudged wearing it; she was
3
it for a special day.
He
4
at that moment; I didn’t say anything either. After a long pause he said: “Never save something beautiful for that special day. Each
5
day is a special day.”
Whenever I
6
what he had said, I would put down the things I was doing to grab a novel, turn on the music and lie down on the couch to
7
some time for myself. I would appreciate the glorious scenery of the Tanshui River through a French window,
8
the dust gathered on the glass. I would take my wife out to
9
, not thinking what to do with the meal already cooked. Life should be the experience we truly cherish, not days we just have to endure.
One time I shared the above conversation with a lady. When I saw her again, she told me that she no longer
10
the beautiful china in a cabinet. She had thought to save them for a special day, only to discover that it never
11
came. “Future”, “someday” are not contained in her
12
any more. If there are things that are pleasant or make her complacent, she wants to hear or see them now.
We often hope to gather with old friends, but always say, “let’s find a(n)
13
.” We often want to hug our grown children, but always wait for the appropriate moment. We often want to write to our spouses to express our strong affection or to show our deep admiration, but always tell ourselves that there is no need to
14
. In fact, each morning when we open our eyes, we should tell ourselves that this is a special day. Each day, each minute is so incredibly
15
.

When Sang Lan got to the Goodwill Games held in New York, she felt very happy. She was a devoted athlete, who had spent many years practising her sport. Her strongest

to a top hospital, and doctors said she would never walk again.
While in hospital, Sang had many

My First Day
I was still shy in the presence of a crowd. And my first day at the new
1
made me a laughing stock(笑柄) of the classroom .I was sent to the blackboard to write my
2
. I knew my name, and knew how to write it , but standing at the blackboard with the
3
of so many pupils on my back made me
4
inside and I was unable to write a single letter.
“Write your name,” the teacher called to me. I
5
the white chalk to the blackboard, as I was about to write, my mind went blank, I could not remember my name,
6
the first letter. Somebody laughed and I became
7
.
“Just forget us and write your name,” the teacher called and walked to my side,
8
at me to give me confidence.
“What is your name?” she asked.
“Richard,” I
9
“Then write it.”
I turned to the blackboard and lifted my hand to write, but then I was
10
again. I tried to
11
my senses but I could remember nothing. I realized how totally I was
12
and I grew weak and leaned my hot forehead
13
the cold blackboard. The room burst into a loud
14
and my muscles froze. I sat and
15
myself. Why did I always appear so dumb
16
I was called upon to perform in a crowd? I knew how to write as well as any other pupil in the classroom, and there was no
17
I could read better than any of them, and I could talk
18
when I was sure of myself. Then why did strange
19
make me freeze? I sat with my ears and neck
20
, hearing the pupils around me whisper, hating myself.

There was a blacksmith(铁匠) who wasn't satisfied with his work. Once he complained, “I am not well and my work is too warm. I want to be a

10
he became a stone-cutter and as he went seeking a suitable stone, he

12
,” I no longer want to cut stone. I would be the sun; that would be pleasant.” The wise man
13
, “Be the sun.” And he was the sun. But the sun was warmer than the blacksmith, than a stone, than a stone-cutter, and he complained, “I do not
14
this. I would be the moon. It

cool.” The wise man spoke yet again, “Be the moon.” And he was the moon. This is warmer than being the sun,”

he, “for the light from the sun

The beggar’s well-deserved dinner
Many years ago, there lived two woodcutters, Rahim and Rahman in a village. They went out every
1
to cut fire wood. After cutting wood. They would sit down and
2
their lunch from their boxes. Next they would
3
the firewood till the end of the day in the marketplace before going
4
.
One day, they were eating their lunch when Rahim noticed a beggar. The beggar
5
eyed the lunch and said, “I wonder if you can spare a little food for me.” Rahim, who felt
6
for him, was about to give him some of it, but was
7
back by Rahman. “ We
8
hard throughout the morning and
9
enough food for ourselves to see us through the
10
. So you see we cannot give you any food. But if you
11
, I can lend you my axe and we both will teach you how to cut firewood and sell it. And you’11 have
12
to eat and buy yourself a(n)
13
axe to cut more fire wood. This way, you can
14
a livelihood with dignity (尊严).”
The beggar joined them.
15
, Rahman showed him how to cut firewood. Thereafter they took him to the
16
and told him how to sell it.
At the end of the day, the beggar proudly took the
17
to Rahman to show them his earnings. Rahman took him to buy a new axe. Then the beggar entered an inn (客栈).
After he had gone, Rahman told Rahim, “By teaching him how to
18
his own trade, we have taught him a skill, which will last him a
19
. Now he will hever go hungry again.” As a very famous saying goes, “Don’t give them fish
20
teach them how to catch the fish.”

One afternoon, many years ago, I went to pick up my mother from work. I got there a little early so I
1
the car by the roadside, across the street from where she worked, and
2
her.
As I looked outside the car window
3
my right, there was a small park
4
I saw a little boy around two years old,
5
freely on the grass as his mother watched him from a short distance. The boy had a big smile on his face
6
he had just been set free from some sort of prison. The boy would then fall to the grass, get up and without
7
run as fast as he could again, still with a smile on his face, as if
8
had happened.
However, with kids (especially at the early age),when they fall down, they don’t perceive their falling down as a
9
, but instead, they treat it as a learning experience, as just another
10
. They feel compelled to try and try again
11
they succeed. The answer must be that they have not
12
“falling down” with the word “failure” yet. Thus they don’t know how to feel the state which
13
failure. What’s more, they probably think that it is perfectly Okay to fall down, and that it’s not
14
to do so. In other words, they give themselves
15
to make mistakes subconsciously. Thus they remain
16
.
While I was touched by the boy’s persistence, I was
17
touched by the manner in which he ran. With each
18
, he looked so confident and so natural. No
19
of fear, nervousness, or being discouraged — as if he didn’t
20
the world around him. His only aim was to run freely and to do it as effectively as he could. I learned a lot from that observation and experience, and have successfully brought that lesson with me in my many pursuits in life.

On the way to school, a little boy found a cocoon(茧) of a butterfly and watched it everyday. One day, it started to break through a small hole in the cocoon, but it

greatly. Finally, it seemed it couldn’t succeed.
The boy felt

The only strange thing was that the butterfly has a swollen(肿胀的) body and dry

didn’t. The butterfly crawled(爬)around and unable to

the struggle, the butterfly couldn’t grow, and would

fly. By trying to help the butterfly, the boy

hurt it.
