Inspiration
“Mama, when I grow up, I’m going to be one of those!” I said this after seeing the Capital Dancing Company perform when I was three. It was the first time that my
1
took on a vivid form and acted as something important to start my training. As I grew older and was
2
to more, my interests in the world of dance
3
varied but that little girl’s dream of someday becoming a
4
in the company never left me. In the summer of 2005 when I was 18, I received the phone call which made that dream a
5
; I became a member of the company
6
back to 1925.
As I look back on that day now, it surely
7
any sense of reality. I believe I stayed in a state of pleasant disbelief
8
I was halfway through rehearsals (排练) on my first day. I never actually
9
to get the job. After being offered the position, I was completely
10
. I remember shaking with excitement.
Though I was absolutely thrilled with the change, it did not come without its fair share of
11
. Through the strict rehearsal period of dancing six days a week, I found it vital to
12
up the material fast with every last bit of concentration. It is that extreme
13
to detail (细节) and stress on practice that set us
14
. To then follow those high-energy rehearsals
15
a busy show schedule of up to five performances a day, I discovered a new
16
of the words “hard work.” What I thought were my physical
17
were pushed much further than I thought
18
. I learned to make each performance better than the last.
Today, when I look at the unbelievable company that I have the great
19
of being a part of, not only as a member, but as a dance captain, I see a
20
that has inspired not only generations of little girls but a splendid company that continues to develop and grow-and inspires people every day to follow their dreams.

Until 1954 it was thought that no man could run one mile in less than four minutes. As years

,the record came closer and closer to four minutes and Roger Bannister,a young English

, began to believe he might

It was a cold afternoon on May 6th,1954,when Bannister knew he had a
4
chance. Bannister had been
5
hard and was very fit,but the weather conditions were a real
6

later,Bannister said,“On the way to the track the wind blew strongly. As I
8
for the start I glanced at the flag.It moved
9
now. This was the moment when I made my decision.
“The gun fired.My legs

gave me greater strength.I felt the

of a lifetime had come.”
“I was driven on by a
14
of fear and pride. My body had long since used up all its energy
15
it went on running just the same. This was the critical moment when my legs were strong enough to carry me over the last few yards as they

could have done in previous years. When I leapt at(冲向) the

tape,I fell,almost

.”
“I knew I had done it,even before I

20
in the noise of excitement.”

There is a small shop about 200 meters from where I live that sells groceries, meat and other basic necessities. About 10 years ago, there was a beggar who would go into the shop every day and ask the owner for a
1
. The owner,
2
he would love to help, simply didn’t have any jobs available, so he kept
3
the man’s request.
This situation continued
4
for a few months, until the owner
5
to give the homeless man a job which
6
sweeping outside the shop. Every single day from 5 am, the homeless man was there doing the very
7
he could for the
8
, even though it did earn him some pennies.
9
, the owner saw how good a job the man was doing and gave him a job working
10
a cashier. He was watched closely to make sure that he didn’t
11
any of the money received from the sales. He was still homeless, after all. The homeless man did a/an
12
job as a cashier for over 2 years, and did such a good job that he was promoted to
13
the finances for the whole shop.
To my
14
, this was the arrangement up until 2 years ago, when the owner
15
. In his will, he only had one
16
, to give the whole shop to the now stable, “homeless” man. Now, I could walk into that shop and see him working as hard as
17
, with his own business that is still
18
and active 10 years after getting his job as a sweeper.
From this story, we can probably get the inspiration: work hard and give everything your best effort, even if it isn’t your
19
situation, it very well may turn out to
20
some day in the future.

This little story I’m about to tell you happened when I was about 11 years old, and I’II never forget it. I was at my friend Jenny’s
1
after school one day, and we were doing (or not doing) homework..
2
I was there, Jenny’s mom came over to visit.
I don’t remember her name
3
what her face looked like. I just remember her hands, her voice and the
4
she taught me.
I can still see her hand
5
for mine in our introduction.
6
were so beautiful, I thought; rich, dark skin
7
complemented(涂了) by the orange colored polish on her nails. Then I
8
her saying, and not at all in a condescending(居高临下的)
9
.“Oh no, that is NOT how you shake hands. Let me show you
10
.”
After that, I just remember her voice
11
the importance of a good handshake, conveying(传递) a positive sense of self, looking at
12
person in the eye, making that first moment matter…I think in that exchange I first understood
13
.
I respected her for
14
the time to teach me about one of those subtleties(细微之处) in life. I appreciated the fact
15
she didn’t look down upon me because I was 11 or because I didn’t know something. And so because of that I felt somewhat respected. I mean the
16
she treated me. It felt good to be
17
like a real person. I also appreciate her idea that
18
someone doesn’t pay attention to something, be patient and point him or her
19
the right direction. I
20
her every time I meet someone and shake hands. And I’m so thankful for her little lesson.

Back in the 15th century, in a tiny village in Germany, lived a family with eighteen children.Eighteen! In order
1
to keep food on the table, the father, a goldsmith by
2
, worked almost eighteen hours a day at his trade.Despite their seemingly
3
condition, two of the eldest children had a dream. They both wanted to pursue their talent for art,
4
they knew well that their father would never be able to
5
either of them to study at the Academy.
After many long discussions at night in their
6
bed, the two boys finally worked out a pact. They would toss (掷) a coin. The
7
would go down into the nearby mines and, with his earnings,
8
his winning brother for the academy. Then, in four years, he would support the Other one. Then Albrecht Durer won the toss and
9
to Nuremberg.Albert went down into the dangerous mines and, for the next four years,
10
his brother, whose work at the academy was almost an immediate sensation.By the time he graduated, he was beginning to
11
considerable fees for himself.
When the young artist
12
home and said to his brother, "And now, Albert, blessed brother of mine, now it is your
13
. Now you can go to the Academy to pursue your dream, and I will
14
you."
Albert rose and wiped the
15
from his cheeks."No, brother.I cannot go to Nuremberg. It is too
16
for me.Look…look what four years in the mines have done to my
17
! I cannot even hold a glass, much less make delicate lines on canvas
18
a pen or a brush."
More than 450 years have
19
.By now, among Albrecht Durer's hundreds of masterful portraits, "The Praying Hands" is one
20
creation that can catch the world's hearts.

High school seems bigger. There are
1
kids and it’s a totally new environment. It could be a
2
time for new students,
3
,in fact, it isn’t really that bad.
The first day of course is always terrifying, but, then again, the first day of middle school was probably the
4
.Of course you might get lost during the first few days
5
your classes, but after a while what seems like a large school really isn’t.
One thing that’s really cool about high school is that there are so many more classes that you can
6
.For example, if you like
7
,there are many art classes. At the same time, there are
8
classes, which you can’t take in middle school
9
photography and psychology(心理学).There are many new things in high school that make it much more
10
.
In high school, you’re able to join more clubs, play more sports, and take part in more
11
,and at the same time make new friends with kids with the same
12
as you. Also, these activities can give you a
13
to learn something that you might not have had the opportunity to learn in
14
.
High school is different
15
everyone, but there’s one thing that’s
16
.You’re going to have just as much fun here as you
17
before. But having fun isn’t enough though! You’re
18
so you have to be more responsible. Everything changes when you get
19
,but the changes aren’t that bad. You
20
worry too much about growing up.

I watched as my little brother was cahught in the act. He sat in the corner of the living room, a
1
in one hand and my father’s hymnbook(赞美诗集) in the other. Hearing my father coming, my brother
2
it slightly. He sensed that he had done something
3
. I saw he had
4
my father’s new book and scribbled(乱写)on the first page in pen. Now,
5
at my father fearfully, we
6
waited for his punishment.My father
7
his book, looked at it, and then sat down without saying a word. He was a clergyman and the holder of several degrees. For him, books were knowledge, and yet, he
8
his children.Instead of
9
my brother, he sat down,
10
the pen from my brother’s hand and wrote in the book himself, “John’s work. 1959. aged three.”
The years and the books came and went. Our family
11
what all families go through. We
12
knew our parents loved us and that one
13
was the book by the piano. From time to time we
14
open it, look at the scribbles, read my father’s expression of love and feel
15
.
Now I know that through this
16
act my father taught us how every
17
in life has a positive side-if we are
18
to look at it from another angle. But he also taught us about what really matters in life:
19
,not objects; tolerance, not judgment; love, no anger. Love is at the very
20
of a family.
When thinking about these, I smile and whisper, “Thank you, Dad. ”

. How would I, unable to speak the language,

I sat down to write a letter rejecting the

There were some bad

The point is that the new, the different, is almost by definition

I've learned to ski at 40, and flown up the Rhine River in a (n)

There are many different ways of seeing a town for the first time. One of them is to walk around it, guide-book
1
hand. Of course, we may
2
with our guide-books the history and
3
developments of a town and get to know them.
4
then, if we take our time and
5
in a town for a while, we may get to know it better. When we
6
it as a whole, we begin to have some
7
, which even the best guide-books do not
answer. Why is the town just
8
this —— this shape, this plan, this size? Why do its streets
9
in this particular way, and not in any
10
way?
Here even the best guide-book
11
us. One can’t find the information in it about how a town has developed to the
12
appearance. It may not describe the original
13
of a town. However, one may get some idea of what it
14
look like by walking around the town. One can also imagine
15
the town was first planned and built. Then one can learn more about in what direction the town
16
to develop.
What is the
17
of studying towns in this way?For me, it is
18
a matter that one gets a greater depth of pleasure by visiting and seeing a town with one’s own eyes. A
19
visit to a town may help one better understand why it is attractive
20
just reading about it in a guide-book.

On a cold winter morning, my mother and I were walking home from a pizza store. We were dressed warmly and equipped with the video we had been
1
to watch. I was feeling a little
2
, as I was carrying our shopping bags of snacks and the video.
They were so heavy that I decided to
3
some things. So I started to walk towards the garbage can when I noticed a poor man
4
his bike out of the restaurant in front of us. He held a paper bag with his dirty hand. He
5
over to another nearby garbage can and started
6
it.
I suddenly felt very
7
. I knew this man would take all he could get,
8
I walked up to him and
9
the drink and some snacks over to him. The man, with lines on his face and wrinkles on his forehead, looked up in
10
and took what I gave him.
A huge smile
11
across his face and this
12
me to feel indescribable satisfaction. I felt like I couldn’t be
13
with myself, but then he said: “Wow, first someone gives me this sandwich, then this drink, and now some
14
food; this is my daughter’s
15
day!”
He thanked me happily and started off
16
his bike. I even heard him whistling a song as he rode away.
I now
17
what is meant by the saying “giving is getting”. Everyone in the world needs help, everyone can
18
help and everyone will be helped by showing
19
.
The image of that man’s happiness caused by my small gift appears in my mind
20
I have the chance to do something nice.
