A doctor was once teaching a class of medical students at a famous hospital in Edinburgh. An injured man was
1
in, and the doctor turned to
2
of the students and asked him, “What’s wrong with this man?”?
“I don’t know, sir.” the student answered. “

“You should know without asking questions. He has

The doctor then turned to the man and said, “You
14
your wages(领工资) on Saturday and went to a
15
house and drank too much. You

wet and muddy on the way
17
. You tried to dry your clothes

19
you had drunk too much, you

“Yes, sir.” said the man.?

As she waited at the edge of the ice for her music to start,. Peggy took a quick look at her father standing nearby with a group of parents and teachers. He smiled at her. Then she

out at the audience,
2
to see her mother. These two, Alvert and Doris Flemint, had
3
all the way from California more than 2,000 miles away, to see their

The music
5
and Peggy moved onto the ice, letting the music
6
her along into her turns, and she began skating with much
7
in herself. The cold fear she always had in the
8
seconds before skating onto the ice was
9
. She was feeling the movement of the
10
and letting it carry her. She skated easily,
11
did some jumps, a final turn and her performance was
12
.
The crowd loved it and cheered
13
she skated off the ice. “Nice job,” said one of the other
14
. It was the remark that
15
came after a free-skating performance. But what should the

18
alone, others with a parent. Shortly before 10 o’clock the results were

. The new United States Women’s Figure Skating Champion was Peggy Fleming of Passdena,

Many cancer patients are finding new hope in an unusual approach to cancer treatment. The common method has been developed by Carl Simonton, a specialist in the science of tumors.
1
can sometimes be "truly amazing," he says, when a cancer
2
lets his mind take part in the treatment.
Simonton remembers that his first patient might have been thought to be a "
3
” case by some. "He was a sixty-one-year-old man with very severe throat cancer. He had lost a great deal of weight. He could
4
swallow his own saliva and could eat no food.
"I taught him to
5
and mentally see his disease," Simonton says. "Then I had him
6
an army of white blood cells coming, attacking and
7
the cancer cells. The results of the treatment were both exciting and frightening. Within two weeks his cancer had noticeably become smaller and he was quickly gaining weight. I say it was '
8
' because I had never seen such a change. I wasn't sure what was going on. I also didn't know what I would do if things went wrong. But
9
didn't go wrong.
"We may believe that we have the power in our own bodies to fight cancer as well as the power to
10
the disease in the first place. With those patients who are willing to stay with us and try, we always find that the cancer has filled some emotional need."

For some people, the sight of a mouse can be reason to scream. For other mice, the same sight can be reason to sing.
Mice will probably
1
sing their way to any concert, but researchers in the United States have found
2
that mice do,
3
, sing.
Scientists already knew that mice make ultrasonic(超声波) sounds—noises that are too high-pitched(高音的) for people to hear
4
special equipment.
To find out whether mice put such sounds together in song-like
5
, the researchers recorded the sounds of 1 mice. Using computer
6
, they were able to separate the sounds into specific types of syllables(音节), and found the mice produced about 10 syllables per second.
The results showed that nearly all of the mice repeated sequences(顺序) of syllables in different patterns. That’s enough to meet the definition of what scientists
7
song. But not all scientists are
8
that what the mice are doing is
9
singing. To prove it, the researchers must show that there’s learning involved. And, they need to
10
why the mice sing.
