As Christmas drew near, Ursula was faced with just that problem. She had come to live in an American home and learn English.
1
, she would mind the children and do anything she was asked.
One of her tasks was to keep track of arriving Christmas presents. Ursula did this faithfully, but she became increasingly worried. What could she buy for her
2
with the little money she had that would compare with the gifts she was recording daily?
3
, even without any of the gifts , her employer seems to have everything.
Ursula
4
long and hard. On Christmas Eve, she went to a store. She moved slowly through crowds of shoppers,
5
things in her mind. Finally she bought a baby dress. She immediately called a taxi. “Excuse me, please, can you help me find a poor family with a baby?” “A poor family?” said the
6
driver. “Yes, a very poor family.” Ursula told the man what she was trying to do. He listened in silence, and then said, “I know a family who needs just about everything.”
When they reached a building, the driver said, “They live on the third floor.” Ursula shook her head, “Would you take this dress to them and tell them it’s from someone …someone who has everything.”
Early the next day, Ursula
7
everyone for the presents she received. Then, she began to
8
why there seemed to be none from her. She told about what she did the night before. When she finished, there was a long
9
. “You see,” she added, “I try to do a kindness in your
10
. And this is my Christmas present to you.”

The finest and most sought-after (广受欢迎的) violins were handcrafted by an Italian violin maker over
1
years ago. The man’s name was Antonius Stradivarius. He was born in 1644 and began his career
2
a violin maker’s apprentice (学徒). Working on his own by 1680, he became determined to make22 that could reproduce tones as rich as those produced by the human voice. He
3
several shapes and styles for his violins until he arrived at a design that pleased him. During his career he crafted 1,100 violins. Those in
4
have become treasured possessions.
Unfortunately, the secret of the Stradivarius violin died with its maker. During his lifetime Stradivarius kept his notes safely
5
, even his two sons, who helped him in his workshop, did not know all the steps involved in each violin’s construction.
Through the years, many experts have offered
6
explanations for the unique tone of a “Strad”. Some say it is due to the violin’s shape. Others suggest that the secret
7
the special properties (特性) of the wood, which Stradivarius obtained from native Italian trees that no longer exist. The most widely accepted explanation is that it is created by the varnish(清漆)that the
8
used to coat his violins. Chemists have analyzed as closely as possible the varnish and have found its
9
has improved the sound of many violins.
10
, no other violin maker has been able to fully reproduce the tone of the Stradivarius’s violins.

It was in my high school science class. I was doing a task in front of the classroom with my favorite shirt on.
A
1
came, “Nice shirt,” I smiled from ear to ear. Then another voice said, “That shirt belonged to my dad. Greg’s mother works for my family. We were going to
2
that shirt away, but gave it to her
3
.” I was speechless. I wanted to hide.
I
4
the shirt in the back of the closet and told my mum what had happened. She then dialed her
5
, “I will no longer work for your family,” she told him. That night, Mom told my dad that she couldn’t clean anymore; she knew her life’s
6
was something greater.
The next morning she
7
with the personnel manager at the Board of Education. He told her that without a proper education she could not teach. So Mom decided to
8
a university.
After the first year in college, she went back to the personnel manager. He said, “You are
9
, aren’t you? I think I have a
10
for you as a teacher’s assistant. This opportunity deals with children who are mentally challenged with little or no chance of
11
.” Mom accepted the opportunity very
12
.
For almost five years, as a teacher’s assistant, she saw teacher after teacher give up on the children and quit, feeling
13
. Then one day, the personnel manager and the principal
14
in her classroom. The principal said, “We have watched how you
15
the children and how they communicate with you and admire your hard-working
16
over the last five years. We are all in agreement that you
17
be the teacher of this class.”
My mom spent more than 20 years there.
18
her career, she was voted Teacher of the Year. All of this came about because of the
19
comment made in the classroom that day when I was in my high school. Mom showed me how to handle
20
situations and never give up.

My husband and I both work at home. We have four children, so the times when I am
1
in the house are few. Like many work-at-home moms, when I do get a
2
to be by myself, I fill that time with more
3
, whether it’s related to my career or taking care of the housework. Most of the time, I don’t mind.
4
, I wanted this job as wife and mother, and I knew from the start that it often
5
putting others’ needs before my own. But, other times, I can’t help but feel a little
6
because I seldom had any plans for myself, and everyone knew it. My life
7
on my family, but they seldom appreciated this, which often
8
me a lot.
One day, when the kids were at school, I
9
for the movie theater-alone, I’d
10
been to the movies alone before, so I was a little nervous. Would I look pitiful going to the theater by myself? Was I being ridiculous(荒唐可笑) by seeing a movie
11
so much work waited for me at home? I
12
myself to swallow these
13
and bought myself a ticket. And then I walked into the theater with my
14
held high and enjoyed every minute of the movie. I laughed and felt my good spirits
15
for a couple of hours, I was

wife or mother. I was just myself.
From that point on, I

that Fridays would be mine,

for a couple of hours. Some Fridays, I head to(前往) the beach with a good book. Other Fridays, I go shopping,
19
up a little fast food or some clothes just for myself. I really

A Woman and a Fork
There was a young woman was diagnosed with a terminal illness and could only live three months. So as she was getting her things "in order," she
1
her Rabbi (法师)and had him come to her house to
2
certain aspects of her final wishes.
She told him which songs she wanted sung at the
3
, what scriptures she would like read, and what outfit she wanted to be buried in.
Everything was in order and the Rabbi was preparing to leave
4
the young woman suddenly remembered something very important to her.
"There's one more thing," she said
5
. "What' that?" "This is very important, I want to be buried with a fork in my right hand."
The Rabbi stood looking at the young woman, not knowing quite what to say.
“That surprises you, doesn't it?” the young woman asked. "Well, to be honest, I'm
6
by the request," said the Rabbi.
The young woman
7
. “My grandmother once told me this story, and from then on, I have always done so. I have also, always tried to pass along its message to those I love and those who are in need of
8
.
In all my years of attending socials and dinners, I always remember that when the dishes of the main
9
were being cleared, someone would inevitably lean over and say, 'Keep your fork.' It was my favorite part
10
I knew that something better was coming...like velvety chocolate cake or deep-dish apple pie…”
So, I just want people to see me there in that casket(棺材)with a fork in my hand and I want them to
11
"What's with the fork?"
12
I want you to tell them: "Keep your fork…the best is yet to come."
The Rabbi's eyes were
13
up with tears of joy as he hugged the young woman good-bye. He knew this would be one of the last times he would see her before her death. But he also knew that the young woman had a better grasp of
14
than he did. She had a better grasp of
15
heaven would be like than many people twice her age, with twice as much experience and knowledge.
She knew that something better was coming. At the funeral people were walking by the young woman's casket and they saw the cloak she was wearing and the fork
16
lin her right hand. Over and over, the Rabbi heard the question "What's with the fork?" And over and over he
17
.
During his message, the Rabbi told the people of the
18
he had with the young woman shortly before she died. He also told them about the fork and what it symbolized to
19
. The Rabbi told the people how he could not stop thinking about the
20
and told them that they probably would not be able to stop thinking about it either.
He was right. So the next time you reach down for your fork, let it remind you ever so gently, that the best is yet to come.

When I met him, I had a lot of anger inside of me.I never had a father, though in my neighborhood that's not
1
.I know some kids just like me.You have to
2
yourself.
There are fights and killings all the time.I have friends who ended up in jail or pregnant.1 could have ended up that way, too, but Mr. Clark and my mom
3
let that happen.
Mr. Clark worked long hours, making sure I did my work.My grades rose.In fact, I did so well that in sixth grade, I entered the
4
class, and Mr.Clark was the teacher.I felt so
5
to have him for a second year!
He took our class to see The Phantom of the Opera. Before the show, he
6
us to dinner at a restaurant and taught us not to talk with our mouths full.We didn't want to let him
7
, so we listened to him attentively.
8
of us were surprised when Mr.Clark was selected as Disney's 2000 Teacher of the Year. When he learned he'd won, he said he would
9
three names out of a hat; he would go to Los Angeles to get the
10
with those students.But
11
it came time to draw names, Mr.Clark said, "You're all going."
He got
12
to fly all 37 of us out to Disneyland in California and put us up at the Hilton.People were
13
, but Mr.Clark really cared about us.There's no way I can
14
most teachers doing that.No way.But he saw something in us that nobody else saw.
On graduation day, there were a lot of tears. We didn't want his class to
15
.In my new school year, we were all happy when Mr.Clark
16
in our class once again. He's been a
17
in our lives.
In 2003, Mr.Clark took some of us on a trip to South Africa to
18
school supplies and visit orphanages. It was the most amazing
19
of my life.It's now my
20
to one day start a group of women's clubs, helping people from all backgrounds.

Although I love my life, it hasn’t been a lot of fun as I’ve been ill for 28 years.
Music has always been a great love of mine and, in my 20s, when my
1
was more manageable , I
2
ten years as a professional singer in restaurants, playing and singing folk songs.
3
that was years ago and times have changed.
4
I live with mother on a country farm.
Two years ago, I decided that I would need to have some kind of extra work to
5
my disability pension (残疾抚恤金).
6
I needed to sleep in the afternoons, I was limited in my
7
. I decided that I would consider
8
to singing in restaurants.
My family are all musicians, so I was
9
when I went into our local music store. I explained that I wanted to sing again but using recorded karaoke music. I knew that discs were very expensive and I really didn’t have a lot of
10
to get started. And
11
you find only three to four songs out of ten on a disc that you can
12
use.
When I told the owner of the shop about my
13
; he gave me a long thoughtful
14
. “This means a lot to you, doesn’t it?” he said. “Come with me.”
He led me
15
the crowded shop and to a bench with a large professional karaoke box on it. He placed his large hand
16
on his treasure and said, “I have 800 karaoke songs in here. You can take your
17
and I’11 record them for you. That should get you started.”
I
18
. Thanking him, I made a time with him to listen to all the songs and choose
19
that I could sing. I have come full circle with his help.
His
20
still warms my heart and makes me do just that bit extra, when I have the chance.

My friend Michelle is blind, but you’d never know it. She makes such good use of her other

excited about her finger-painting project.
“Mom, guess what?” said Kayla, all smiles. "I learned how to

Some years ago when I was in my first year in college, I heard Salome Bey sing for the first time. The moment was exciting. Salome’s
1
filled the room and brought the theater to life. I was so
2
that I decided to write an article about her.
I

Salome Bey, telling her I was from Essence magazine, and that I wanted to meet her to talk about her career. She

and told me to come to her studio next Tuesday. When I hung up, I was scared out of my mind. I
5
I was lying. I was not a writer at all and hadn’t even written a grocery list.
I interviewed Salome Bey the next Tuesday. I sat there
6
, taking notes and asking questions that all began with, “Can you tell me…” I soon realized that
7

8

9
draft after draft. Finally I put my manuscript (手稿) into a large envelope and dropped it into a mailbox.
It didn’t take long. My manuscript
10
. How stupid of me! I thought. How could I
11
in a world of professional writers? Knowing I couldn’t
12

Five years later, I was moving to California. While
13
my apartment, I came across the unopened envelope. This time I opened it and read the editor’s letter in
14
:
Ms Profit,
Your story on Salome Bey is fantastic. Yet we need some
15
materials. Please add those and return the article immediately. We would like to
16
your story soon.
Shocked, it took me a long time to
17
. Fear of rejection cost me ly. I lost at least five hundred dollars and having my article appear in a major magazine. More importantly, I lost years of
18
writing. Today, I have become a full – time writer. Looking back on this
19
, I learned a very important lesson: You can’t

to doubt yourself.

In 1991, 1 spent five months in Niger. There were many things I found difficult about this place—the climate and beggars were my biggest complaints. One day, a friend and I

to me, my passport, money and an airline ticket. I was in deep trouble. All I wanted was to leave this hell.
Then, walking through Burkina's streets the following week, I was
9
rudely by an old woman who stretched her hand in my face. "Cadeau (gift)! Cadeau!" she

I'd had enough. I was sick and
11
of the country. I told her
12
in French, "I have no 'cadeau'. I have no money A thief stole all my money a week ago and now I can't

The beggar woman listened
