When I moved into an empty dormitory for the first time two years ago, I was certain of a few things. Firstly, I realized that I didn’t
1
anybody at the school. Secondly, I knew that I wanted to work hard at my lessons and learn something useful. And thirdly, I wanted to have a good time with new classmates, without my parents around.
The first
2
frightened me in the beginning. But that
3
quickly disappeared. It was the other two goals
4
ended up being my difficulties. I knew that it was hard to devote enough time to class and to social efforts. But I wanted to
5
in both. I knew this would be a
6
, but I didn’t realize how much until classes began.
I got on well with the other girls who lived in my dorm.
7
, instead of finishing my homework
8
it was due, I went upstairs and had ice cream with my neighbor. I always finished it the next day between classes. I knew it wasn’t very good and the grade I
9
showed my lack of effort.
I was
10
that I needed to find some sort of balance. So I created a schedule that would
11
my time up between going to class, doing homework, and relaxing. It seemed like a good idea, but I was only able to
12
it for a few days. A schedule like that was too much pressure.
So I tried another
13
. Each week I made a list of everything I had to get done during that week. Then, under the list of things I had to get done, I made a list of things I could do if I had time.
This is the method I have used since then. I’m glad that I’ve learned to
14
things and it has
15
prepare me for what is to come after graduation.

I ran into a stranger as he passed by, and I at once apologized to him. We were both very
1
, he stranger and I. Then we went
2
our way after saying good-bye.
But at home a
3
story is told. Later that day, when I
4
supper in the kitchen, my daughter suddenly stood behind me very
5
. When I turned back, I
6
knocked her down. “Don’t be in my
7
!” I shouted angrily. She walked away with her little heart
8
.On the kitchen floor later, I found some flowers by the door.
That night, while I lay
9
in bed, a voice in my deep heart said, “While
10
with a stranger, you are so polite, but with the children you love, you are so easily
11
.Why are there some flowers by the door? Those are the flowers she brought for you. She
12
them herself, pink, yellow and your favorite blue. She stood quietly in order to give you a
13
, and you never saw the
14
in her eyes.”
By this time, I felt very
15
and now my tears began to fall. I quietly went and knelt (跪下) by her
16
, “Wake up, little girl, wake up,” I said, “Are these the flowers you picked for me?” She smiled, “Yes, because I knew you’d like them, especially the
17
.” I said, “Daughter, I’m sorry for the way I acted today; I
18
have shouted at you that way.”
She said, “Oh, Mom, that’s okay. I love you
19
.” I hugged her and said, “Daughter, I love you too, and I do like the flowers.”

When I was growing up, my father always stopped what he was doing and listened while I'd breathlessly fill him in on my day.
1
the time I graduated from college, I got a job teaching special education at a school about 170 miles from home. “
2
,” Dad warned me during my visit home. He was
3
about my living alone.
One evening, I stayed after
4
to rearrange my classroom. Finished, I realized the gate was
5
! Everyone else had gone home. After checking all the
6
, I found just enough room to squeeze (挤) under the gate. I lay on my back and
7
edged through. Suddenly, I saw about several boys following me. Quickening my
8
, I reached into my shoulder bag to get my key ring. But the key ring wasn't there! “Hey! Let's
9
the lady!” one boy shouted.
Suddenly, my fingers wrapped around a
10
key in my purse. I did not even
11
if it was for my car. I reached my car and the key
12
! I opened the door, slid in and locked it -- just as the teenagers surrounded the car.
13
, I started the engine and drove away. Some teachers went back to the school with me
14
. With flashlights, we found the key ring on the ground by the gate,
15
it had fallen as I slid through.
When I returned to my apartment, the phone was ringing. It was
16
. “Oh, I forgot to tell you. I put a (an)
17
car key into your purse” he said. “in
18
you ever need it.” Today, I keep that key in my drawer and
19
it. Whenever I hold it in my hand, I am
20
of all the wonderful things Dad has done for me over the years.

There was a man who had a little boy that he loved very much.Every day after work the man would come home and

When he got home, the little boy came

About half an hour later the boy came to the man and said, "Okay, it's finished. Can we play now?" The man was

enough, there was the picture of the world, all put together every piece in its

The amount of usable water has always been of great interest in the world.
1
springs and streams sometimes means control, particularly in the
2
areas like the desert. The control is possible even without possession of large areas of
3
land. In the early days of the American West, gun fights were not
4
for the water resources (资源). And laws had to be
5
to protect the water rights of the
6
and the use of the water resources accordingly.
7
is known to us all, there is not
8
water in all places for everyone to use as much as he likes. Deciding on the
9
of water that will be used in any particular period
10
careful planning, so that people can manage and use water more
11
. Farmers have to change their use of or demand for water
12
the water supply forecast (预报).
The
13
water supply forecast is based more on the water from the
14
than from the below. Interest is
15
in the ways to increase rainfall by man-made methods, and to get water from the winter snow on mountain
16
. With special equipment, some scientists are studying the ways in which the mountain snow can be
17
, and with the help of a repeater station, they send the
18
data (数据) to the base station. The operator at the base station can get the data at any time by
19
a button. In the near future, the forecast and use of water
20
probably depend on the advance knowledge of snow on mountains, not of water underground.

I have spent years of my life traveling all over the world. When I arrive in a new country or city, usually I am very
1
and go to bed early. For this
2
my first day or night in any new place is always quiet and very
3
happens.
4
my first night in Algeciras was very different. This night was very
5
and unusual.
At that time
6
in Southern Spain was a dirty and
7
looked-after city. I arrived late in the evening by
8
. As soon as I got off the boat, I went to look for a
9
. I found a small hotel not far from the boat.
This hotel looked
10
and untidy from the outside. But I was very tired and did not know my
11
around the city of Algeciras. And so I decided to stay in this
12
hotel on the quay(码头). I also decided to stay in this hotel for another
13
. The moon was full and it was a clear,
14
night. From the hotel I could
15
the sea. I could see the huge rock of Gibraltar in the bright moonlight.
The hotel had a narrow
16
and no name. When I went through this doorway, I had to climb up narrow and dark stairs to the first floor. I
17
a small cupboard with a desk in front of it. This was the hotel office.
An untidy and tired woman was sitting beside the
18
. When I said I wanted a room for the night, she took me
19
some more stairs to a room on the second floor. Inside this room the landlord was sitting playing cards with some friends. He was
20
his game of cards and I was simply a nuisance(讨厌的人). He looked at me when the woman told him that I wanted a room. Then he said, Room Five, and turned back to his game of cards.

For John and Amy, birthdays have always been a big deal-a welcome excuse to celebrate life.
When their son, Alex,
1
three in 2005, they invited 20 friends to a nearby park. Not long after that the
2
were brainstorming ways to teach Alex about giving to
3
. “We wanted to do something that would have a(an)
4
on our community, and that our young child could
5
in. We started wondering what
6
fortunate kids do on their birthdays. The next day, we called a local shelter, and learnt that
7
children typically didn’t do
8
to celebrate at all. No cake. No gifts. No party.” The couple said.
Several weeks later,
9
held a party at the
10
for the children who had birthdays that month. They decorated, served cake, and danced with 50 kids. Alex helped to
11
presents.
12
that first party, the couple have turned their simple idea
13
Birthday Blessings, a nonprofit that hosts monthly parties at 10 shelters.
To date, Birthday Blessings (birthdayblessings.org.) has thrown more than 500
14
at different shelters and handed out 22, 000 party
15
to nearly 4000 homeless children in and around their community.
Birthday Blessings is
16
entirely by volunteers. The charity(慈善)will take almost anything—toys, clothing, candy, baby items—
17
it’s not used. “These kids never get anything new.” John said, “It makes a big
18
to them psychologically.”
Being “part of this labor love” is
19
making an impression on their son Alex. On his seventh birthday, his grandparents sent a check.
20
it, the first thing he said was that he wanted to give half to the birthday kids.

Not too long ago, a story that happened at Walt Disney touched me greatly. A guest
1
out of our Polynesian Village resort(度假胜地) at Walt Disney was asked how she
2
her visit. She told the front-desk clerk she had had a(n)

vacation, but was heartbroken about

6
over the loss of the pictures she had shot at our Polynesian Luau,
7
this was a memory she especially treasured.
Now, please understand that we have no written service rules

We may look at the world around us, but somehow we manage not to see it until whatever we’ve become used to suddenly disappears.
1
, for example, the neatly-dressed woman I
2
to see--or look at--on my way to work each morning.
For three years, no matter
3
the weather was like, she was always waiting at the bus stop around 8:00 am. On
4
days, she wore heavy clothes and a pair of woolen gloves. Sometimes
5
out neat, belted cotton dresses and a hat pulled low over her sunglasses.
6
, she was an ordinary working woman. Of course, I
7
all this only after she was seen no more. It was then that I realized how
8
I expected to see her each morning. You might say I
9
her.
“Did she have an accident? Something
10
?” I thought to myself about her
11
. Now that she was gone, I felt I had
12
her. I began to realize that part of our
13
life probably includes such chance meetings with familiar
14
: the milkman you see at dawn, the woman who
15
walks her dog along the street every morning, the twin brothers you see at the library. Such people are
16
markers in our lives. They add weight to our
17
of place and belonging.
Think about it.
18
, while walking to work, we mark where we are by
19
a certain building, why should we not mark where we are when we pass a familiar, though
20
person?
