When I was a young student, a Chinese teacher told us, “If you make one close friend in school, you will be most fortunate. A true friend is someone who stays with you for life.”
1
tells us that he was right. Good friendship is just not easily
2
. It is possible that we simply do not stay in one place long enough for
3
friendship to
4
.
However, there can be
5
disagreement on the need for each of us to think carefully about the kind of friendship we want. To most of us, friendships are considered very important, but we need to have clear in our
6
the kinds of friendship we want. Are they to be close or
7
at arm’s length? Do we want to
8
ourselves or do we want to walk on the surface? For some people, many friendships on the surface are
9
enough—and that’s all right. But at some point we need to
10
that our expectations are the same as our friends’ expectations. The sharing of
11
experience
12
our tears as well as our dark dreams is the surest way to deepen friendships. But it
13
be undertaken(进行)slowly and carried on only if there are
14
of interest and action in return.
What are some of the
15
of friendship? The greatest is the attraction to expect too much too soon. Deep relationships
16
time. Another “major difficulty” is the selfishness to think one “possesses” the other, including his time and attention. Similarly, friendships
17
actions in return. In
18
words, you must give as much as you take.
Finally there is a question of taking care of. Unless you spend
19
time together, talking on the phone, writing letters, doing things together, friendships will die

Seasonal influenza is characterized by a sudden fever, cough, headache, muscle and joint pain, sore throat and runny nose. Most people recover from fever and
1
symptoms within a week without requiring medical attention. But influenza can
2
severe illness or death in people at high risk. The time from infection to illness is about two days.
Yearly influenza epidemics can
3
affect all age groups, but the highest risk of complications occur among children younger than age two, adults age 65 or older, and people of
4
age with certain medical conditions, such as chronic heart, lung, kidney, liver, blood or metabolic diseases, or weakened immune systems.
Seasonal influenza
5
easily and can sweep through schools, nursing homes or businesses and towns. When an
6
person coughs, infected droplets get into the air and another person can breathe them
7
and be exposed. The virus can also be spread by hands infected with the virus.
8
transmission, people should cover their mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing, and
9
their hands regularly.
Drugs for influenza are
10
in some countries and effectively prevent and treat the illness. Some influenza viruses develop
11
to the antiviral medicines, limiting the effectiveness of treatment.
Influenza epidemics occur
12
during autumn and winter in temperate regions. Illnesses result in hospitalizations and deaths mainly among high-risk groups. Worldwide, these annual epidemics result in about three to five million
13
of severe illness, and about 250 000 to 500 000 deaths.
Influenza can cause serious public health and economic problems. In
14
countries, epidemics can result in high levels of worker absenteeism and productivity
15
.
16
most people recover from a bout(轮) of influenza, there are large numbers of people who need hospital treatment and many
17
die from the disease every year.
18
is known about the effects of influenza epidemics in developing countries.
The most
19
way to prevent the disease or severe outcomes from the illness is vaccination. Vaccination is especially important for people at higher risk of serious influenza complications, and for people who live with or care
20
high risk individuals.

The boss told John to wait a second, and he asked Bobby to do the same thing. Bobby went, returned and said, "Boss, only one person sells watermelons, $1.2 per kg, $10 for 10kg. He has 340 melons

A man’s best friend may become his enemy. His children that he has

In the clinic, I asked if Michael could be retested, so the specialist tested him again. To my
1
, it was the same score.
Later that evening, I
2
told Frank what I had learned that day. After talking it over, we agree that we knew our
3
much better than an IQ test. We
4
that Michael’s score must have been a
5
and we should treat him
6
as usual.
We moved to Indiana in 1962, and Michael studied at Concordia High School in the same year. He got
7
grades in the school, especially
8
biology and chemistry, which was a great comfort.
Michael
9
Indiana University in 1965 as a pre-medical student, soon afterwards, his teachers permitted him to take more courses than
10
. In 1968, he was accepted by the School of Medicine, Yale University.
On graduation day in 1972, Frank and I
11
the ceremony at Yale. After the ceremony, we told Michael about the
12
IQ score he got when he was six. Since that day, Michael sometimes would look at us and say
13
, “My dear mom and dad never told me that I couldn’t be a doctor, not until after I graduated from medical school!” It is his special way of thanking us for the
14
we had in him.
Interestingly, Michael then
15
another IQ test. We went to the same clinic where he had
16
the test eighteen years before. This time Michael scored 126, an increase of 36 points. A result like that was supposed to be
17
.

of them. That is, tell a child he is “

When I began married life more than 17 years ago, I weighed 118 pounds. After having two children, and years of
1
eating, I weighed 180 pounds. I was unhappy. I considered going on a
2
, so I gathered information about it.
I
3
the South Beach Diet and how well it was
4
for some people in our area. I looked it up online and
5
for it. Even though I knew my husband loved me no matter how I
6
or how much I weighed. I decided that it would be a wonderful
7
for my husband to come home and see a new
8
, so I kept my South Beach experience a
9
from him. Later he left home for a two-week business trip.
I was surprised at all the
10
I could eat. It was great to have breakfast,
11
and dinner. The food was difficult to eat at first
12
I usually didn’t like such food. This made the daily menus hard,
13
I overcame (克服) the challenge.
The first two weeks there really
14
me change the way I thought about
15
. It wasn’t chocolate or cheese or candy I
16
, but fruit! Before my husband’s return, my children and I were amazed at how quickly the
17
was lost.
When my husband returned, I had
18
more than 30 pounds. When I saw my husband’s reaction at the airport I thought it was worth every minute on the diet! I have
19
to lose weight and I am now less than 10 pounds from my final
20
. I feel better than I have in years and I’m enjoying life much more!

“If you want to catch lots of fish, you should be

The fisherman asked, looking

at the businessman and smiling, “And what will my reward be?”
“Well, you can get big

smiling.
The businessman replied, “Then you will

“And then what will my reward be?” the fisherman asked the

Once again the fisherman smiled at him and asked, “And then what will my reward be?”
The businessman was

of his question and shouted at the fisherman, “Don’t you understand? You can become so

For much of our life, my mother and I hated each other. I spent most of my childhood
1
with her – or trying to avoid her, as well as her bitterness, unhappiness and endless smoking. I learned how to defend myself with

designed to hurt her. In turn, she vowed I would have a

who would feel the way about me that I felt about her.
Many years later when my husband and I decided to have a child, I was

8
I couldn’t forget my mother’s teasing vow, even after she died and I saw her in a more

light. As my daughter got older, whenever we argued, I worried we were

Last summer, my daughter

to her my biggest fear that we would end up like me and my mother. “That will never happen.” she
14
me, kissing me goodbye. Six weeks later, my husband and I returned to the campus. I
15
myself arguing with my daughter about her messy room, not using the library and her mistake of choosing the room near the bathroom. I couldn’t stop myself. And then
16
came: “You’re just like your mother,” my daughter screamed. “I hate you.” And then she

I finally heard the words I had always dreaded. But maybe that was because I
