Who buy the presents? How much should we spend? Questions about money like these

The
3
cause of holiday stress is money issues, according to a recent poll by the American Psychological Association (APA). The survey found that 61 percent of Americans

lack of money as the top cause of family tensions, holiday blues and depression.
“People believe that they can go out and buy gifts because it’s the holidays,
5
they can’t afford to do so,” says Dorothy Cantor, a noted psychologist and former APA president. “Not only is it stressful to feel that you have to buy everyone an expensive gift, but you will also be stressed for the rest of the year trying to pay your

that doesn’t have to cost a lot.”
While managing money issues during the holiday season can be a

For starters, make an agreement with family members to discuss holiday spending and finances before you make any

. The goal here is to learn one another’s thoughts and feelings about priorities and wishes. Be realistic, decide together on a budget and only use cash, rather than using credit cards. Avoid getting
11
unreasonable expectations. It makes no

to buy gifts you can not afford and put additional financial and emotional stress on yourself and your family that will cause problems long after the holidays are over.
Other ways to

the burden of money-related holiday blues include an understanding that everyone faces money problems at one time or another. It’s important to keep your
14
situation in perspective, to learn from experience and then to proceed with your life.
And lastly, make focusing on financial solutions a part of your New Year’s resolution. It’s the perfect time to take a
15
approach by doing some soul-searching, forgiving yourself, letting go of the past and dealing with your financial problems in a businesslike manner each day.

Even though it was only October, my students were already whispering about Christmas plans. With each passing day everyone became more
1
, waiting for the final school bell. Upon its

everyone would run for their coats and go home, everyone except David
David was a small boy in ragged clothes. I had often
3
what kind of home life David had, and what kind of mother could send her son to school dressed so
4
for the cold winter months, without a coat, boots, or gloves. But something made David

Weeks passed and the
10
ovre the coming Christmas grew into restlessness until the last day of
11
before the holiday break. I smiled in

as the last of them hurried out the door. Turning around I saw David

standing by my desk.
“I have something for you”he said and

it to me, he said anxiously. “Open it,”I took the box from him, thanked him and slowly unwrapped it. I lift the lid and to my

17
”
“Oh no it isn’t,”said David. “It’s full of love, my mum told me before she died that love was something you couldn’t see or touch unless you know it’s there”
Tears filled my eyes
18
Iooked at the proud dirty face that I had rarely given

to. After that Christmas, David and I became good friends and I never forgot the meaning

I ran into a stranger as he passed by. “I’m so sorry!” was my reply. Then he said, “Excuse me too… I wasn’t
1
watching for you.” We were very polite, this stranger and I. Then we went
2
our way after saying goodbye.
But at
3
, a different story is told. How we treat our loved ones, young and old. Later in the kitchen, as I
4
the meal, my daughter walked up to me, very still. When I turned, I
5
knocked her down. “Get out of the way!” I shouted with a frown (皱眉). She stepped away silently, with her little heart
6
. I didn’t realize how rudely I had spoken.
That night, when I lay
7
in bed, God’s quiet voice spoke to me and said, “While
8
with a stranger, you are calm and polite, but with those you love, you are QUICK to excite… Go look around on the kitchen floor, you’11 find some flowers there by the
9
. Those are the flowers she brought for you. She
10
them herself — pink, yellow, and your favorite blue. She stood there quietly and you never saw the
11
in her eyes.”
By this time, I felt sad and small and now my own tears began to fall. I quietly went and knelt (跪) by her
12
. “Wake up, my,” I said. “Are these the flowers you picked up for me?” She smiled, “I found them out by the tree, I
13
them in a napkin(纸巾), just for you. I knew you’d like them, especially the
14
.” I said, “I am so sorry that I missed them today… And I
15
have fussed (大惊小怪) at you that way…”
And she whispered, “Mommy, that’s OK… I still love you
16
.” I hugged her and said, “I love you, too and I LOVE the flowers.”
Do you know that: if you die tomorrow, the
17
you are working for could easily replace you in a matter of days. But the family you leave
18
will feel the loss for the rest of their lives. And come to think of it, we pour ourselves more into our
19
than into our families--- an unwise investment (投资) indeed.

A student went to college(大学) after

after the first day, he did not go to

The teacher had prepared a difficult examination paper, which covered

he had taught, and he was eager(急切) to see

this surprised him very much, he went through the paper

the student to question him about his work..
When the student had

A Charlotte, N.C., man was charged with first-degree murder of a 79-year-old woman whom police said he scared to death. In an attempt to evade policemen after a bank robbery, the Associated Press reports that 20-year-old Larry Whitfield broke into the home of Mary Parnell. Police say he didn’t touch Parnell but that she died after suffering a heart attack that was caused by terror. Can the guy be held responsible for the woman’s death? Prosecutors(公诉人) said that he can under the state’s murder rule, which allows someone to be charged with murder if he or she causes another person’s death while committing or fleeing from a severe crime like robbery—even if he or she doesn’t kill someone on purpose.
But, medically speaking, can someone actually be frightened to death? We asked Martin Samuels, chairman of the neurology department at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
Absolutely, no question about it.
The body has a natural protective method called the fight-or-flight response(战或逃反应), which was originally described by Walter Cannon, the chairman of Harvard University’s physiology department from 1906 to 1942. If, in the wild, an animal is faced with a life-threatening situation, the autonomic nervous system responds by increasing heart rate, increasing blood flow to the muscles, and slowing digestion, among other things. All of this increases the chances of succeeding in a fight or running away from an aggressive beast. This process certainly would be of help to primitive humans. However, in the modern world there is obvious decline of the fight-or-flight response.
The autonomic nervous system uses the chemical messenger to send signals to various parts of the body to activate the fight-or-flight response. This chemical is toxic in large amounts; it damages the organs such as the heart, lungs, liver and kidneys. It is believed that almost all sudden deaths are caused by damage to the heart. There is almost no other organ that would fail so fast as to cause sudden death. Kidney failure, liver failure, those things don’t kill you suddenly.
By the way, any strong positive or negative emotions such as happiness or sadness can cause the same result. There are people who have died in intercourse or in religious passion. There was a case of a golfer who hit a hole in one, turned to his partner and said, “I can die now”, and then he dropped dead. For about seven days after the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon there was an increase of sudden cardiac death among New Yorkers.
1.
Why the Charlotte, N.C., man was charged?
A.
Because he threatened the policemen to kill an old woman.
B.
Because he caused an old woman’s terror and she died.
C.
Because he beat an old woman and caused her heart attack
D.
Because he murdered an old woman while robbing a bank.
2.
What is Martin Samuels’ attitude to the possibility of being frightened to death?
A.
Approval.
B.
Disapproval.
C.
Doubtful.
D.
Indifferent.
3.
Which of the following about the fight-or-flight response is true?
A.
The fight-or-flight response was raised and proved by Martin
4.
What activity can we infer is less likely to damage the organs?
A.
Winning a big lottery.
B.
Missing a dead family.
C.
Watching a horror movie.
D.
Listening to a sweet song.
5.
The purpose of the passage is_________.
A.

My husband hasn't stopped laughing about the thing that happened to me. It's
1
now but it wasn't at that time.
Last Friday, after doing all the family shopping in town, I
2
a rest before catching the train, so I bought a
3
and some chocolate and went to the station coffee shop that was a cheap, self-service place with long
4
to sit at. I put my heavy bag down on the floor, put the newspaper and chocolate on the table to
5
a place, and went to get a cup of coffee.
When I came back with the coffee, there was someone in the
6
seat. It was one of those
7
young man, with dark glasses and torn clothes, and hair coloured bright
8
at the front, not so unusual these days. What did
9
me was he'd started to eat my chocolate!
Naturally, I was annoyed(恼火). However, to avoid trouble-then really I was rather uneasy about him-I just
10
down at the front page of the newspaper, tasted my coffee, and took a bit of chocolate. The boy looked at me
11
. Then he took another piece of my chocolate. I could hardly
12
it. Still I didn't want to start an argument. When he took a
13
piece, I felt more
14
than annoyed. I thought, "Well, I shall have the last piece. "And I
15
it.
The boy gave me a
16
look, and then stood up. As he left he shouted out, "This woman's mad!" Everyone
17
. That really made me feel silly, but it was
18
when I finished my coffee and got ready to leave. My face went red-as red as his hair when I
19
I'd made a mistake. It wasn't my chocolate he'd been taking. There was mine,
20
, just under my newspaper.

Being alone in outer space can be frightening. That is one reason why astronauts on solo (单独的) space flights were given plenty of work to keep them
1
. They were also constant communication with people on the earth.
2
, being with people from whom you cannot get away might be even harder than being alone. This is what happens on long submarine (潜水艇) voyages. It will also happen on
3
space flights in the future. Will there be special problem of adjustment under such conditions?
Scientists have studied the reactions of men to one another during long submarine voyages. They have found that the longer the voyage lasts, the more serious the problem of
4
is. When men are
5
together for a long period, they begin to feel uneasy. Everyone has little habits of speaking and behaving that are ordinarily acceptable. In the limited space over a long period of time, however, these little habits may become very

Apparently, although no one wants to be

all the time, everyone needs some degree of privacy. When people are enclosed together, they are in what is called a stress situation. That means that they are under an unusual amount of
8
or stress.
People who are well-adjusted are able to
9
stress situations better than others. That is one reason why so much care is taken in
10
our astronauts. These men undergo a long period of testing and training. One of the things tested is their behavior under stress.

I noticed the woman when I entered the newsroom. My secretary told me she wanted to put an ad to
1
a baby. So I suggested several
2
lines for these ads to her:
3
, Baby to love; or Dear Birth Mother, Let Us Help You. The ad would contain
4
about her and her husband: they were
5
, could afford to raise a child. But then something
6
me: the major newspapers carried ads like this and their
7
were larger than ours. “Have you tried the major ones?” I asked. “Yes, but all failed and one more wouldn’t
8
.” She handed me a check and left with a
9
smile.
A week later the woman called in a
10
of delight: “Please don’t run the ad again. We ’ve connected with
11
. The baby is due in a month.” Good news. I asked her if she
12
keep in touch if the adoption
13
to have a happy ending. She agreed but added when the adoption was final she was
14
to give me the story.
One day my phone rang. I
15
her voice immediately. “The adoption is final. Would you like to come and meet him?” Happily, I made a (an )
16
with her for the next day. “His name is Ben,” she said, as I started to take
17
. “He slept through the night from the start. Now he’s smiling and starting to turn over. Of course I’m not
18
him. If he is a little slow.” She paused. “ Oh, I should tell you Ben has Down’s Syndrome.(唐氏综合症)” I stopped writing . I wasn’t sure how to
19
. But she smiled “Ben was meant for us, don’t you see? He needs me more than a
20
developing child would.” She sat on the sofa, holding her son. Both of them smiled. “You wanted a story with a happy ending,” said the woman “ You got it.”
