In the city of Fujisawa, Japan, lives a woman named Atsuko Saeki When she was a teenager, she1of going to the United States. Most of what she knew about American2 was from the textbooks she had read. "You will never understand how those words of15made me feel…Four words: You can do that I felt like crying with happiness."
She made it through the class. Perhaps she thanked the young man; she is not16 .
Six years have passed. Atsuko is back in Japan, working as a salesclerk. "I have17forgotten the words." she said. "When things are not going so well, I think of them."
She is sure the young man had no idea how much his kindness18to her. "He probably doesn't even remember it," she said. That may be the lesson. One day before Christmas, all of us children from the Children's Home Society Orphanage(孤儿院) were taken to the Mayflower Hotel in downtown to attend a Christmas party.
After the man on the stage said a prayer(祈祷), we were told to1 . Within minutes we were 2a meal which was fit for a king. I ate 3I could eat no more. As we ate, Santa Clause came walking out onto the4. The kids cheered with5. Everyone began clapping their hands and yelling as6as they could.
I too was excited7but I knew better than to yell(叫喊)out loud or to jump up and scream. Mrs. Winters, the head matron, sat only three seats from me. She had8it very clear to everyone that we were tobehaveourselves in "a proper manner" and that there was to be "no yelling or shouting".
One orphan9was led up onto the stage and each kid was handed a10by Santa Claus himself.
As the line became shorter and shorter my11finally came. He smiled at me. Then he reached over and handed me a12box which had two gold ribbons(丝带) on it. As I leaned(向前倾) to take the box I tripped and I13to my knees. Santa reached over and helped me to my feet.
"Move14Kiser." called out Mrs. Winters.
I was now leaning against Santa Claus' leg and I was looking15into his eyes. His face was less than an inch from mine.
"Can I16you Santa?" I asked him.
The next thing I knew Mrs. Winters had caught me up by my shirt collar and was17me away from the line of children.
I sat down in my chair just crying. Once in a while I would18at the stage to see if my gift was still sitting by Santa Claus.
When we all lined up waiting, I19"HO HO HO" coming from behind me.
As I20, there stood Santa Claus holding my large box. Then he knelt down and he hugged my neck as hard as he could.

Just how popular was Mini? Very. Every year, her classmates voted her1 the favourite student. She was so easy to2 along with that the number of friends she had by far outnumbered (压倒)those of anyone else in her group.
One day the 10-year-old was3 talking in the class and ordered to stay back as4 . Staying back5doing something “useful”, like helping in the garden or library after school.
Now the school in which Mini6 had a rule of sorts. Once a month, you could interchange your punishment schedule with someone else. If you7 something else to do the day you were punished, you could 8a friend to stand in for you. Of course, you had to return the favour, but in that same month itself. Otherwise the favour cancelled itself out. So the students who stayed back for others and wanted the favour repaid, found ways to be punished that very month.9 it happened, on that day a very dear aunt was visiting Mini on her way back to America. That afternoon was the only10 Mini had of seeing her for another five years. Mini needed someone to stand in for her. That was a problem though it was the last day of the month. So anyone who helped her, would do so out of friendship's sake alone. She sought out Preeti, her “best'”friend. "Oh no Mini, I can't," Preeti said. "I have to coach my brother for his nursery entrance test. The kid just can't seem to get into any decent (体面的)school." And she spent a good11 of time telling Mini of her brother's problems.
"Mohit,12 you stay back for me?" Mini asked another friend who was dribbling a ball(运球) in the playground. She knew he often just hung around after school. "To help the librarian? I13 you'd told me earlier. I have to go to a relative's house with my father. Some other day perhaps," and14 that Mohit fled.
By now, Mini was beginning to15 if even one of her friends would16 to stay. But she tried again. Three17friends and each one refused. Of course, no one said "no" outright. Mini was a great pal, after all. But each had a “reason”why they couldn't take her place that afternoon, and if only it were some other day...
So, after school Mini stayed back to help the18 , Ms Mathur. And, when the remote Ms Mathur found her crying after everyone had left, it was she19 surprised Mini by allowing her to leave to meet her aunt. "Some popularity I have," Mini murmured(嘟囔) to herself, as she went home. "I may have many friends, but in reality I have20 ."

I got a cancer when I was 18. This was a big deal for someone to1. I chose to fight. After treatments, I2 from my illness. Life couldn’t have been any3. When I became fit years later, I met a wonderful man and got married.4, I still felt something missing and eager to find my5.
As my 20-year anniversary (周年纪念) of being a cancer6 approached, I wanted to do something special and7. I organized a fundraiser, calling it “A Mission (使命) of Love” and thanks to my8 family and friends, raised﹩4,000 for St. Jude’s, planning to9 it myself. Three quarters of the money would be given as a (n)10 to the hospital, and what was left would go toward buying11 for the children. I also organized a T-shirt12 activity for any child who felt well enough.
Thanksgiving Day seemed the most13 day of the year for the mission, and so it was all arranged. We went to a store and14 three shopping carts with toys. It was15 we were celebrities (名人) when the employees and other shoppers knew what we were doing.
On Thanksgiving Day, as we got to St. Jude’s, I became16 emotional, as my eyes were filled with tears of17. After dropping the toys off, we arrived where six children were waiting anxiously to begin painting. To me, it was as though they weren’t sick, and to see them smile was the greatest gift I could have ever18.
Leaving there that day, I knew I had finally found my purpose. All of us are born for a reason, but all of us don’t19 why. Success in life has nothing to do with what you20 in life. It’s what you do for others.

On the first day of the sixth grade, I noticed one little girl called Amy on the school bus. “ Don’t 1her,” warned Lauren, who sat beside me. “or they will make fun of you.”
Amy had many 2differences - lots of reasons for other kids to make fun of her. Her eyes weren’t straight. Her glasses were an inch thick. And she had really uneven teeth.
Every day 3we drove to and from school, kids would shout insults(侮辱) at Amy. “God,what a strange face! Stop 4me!”“Mr. Rolland (the driver)! Amy took off her glasses, and now her eyes are frightening me. 5her put them back on!” For a while I shouted my6of insults, just so I’d fit in. 7, I didn’t want them to treat me the same way they treated Amy.
But while I was insulting her, my heart 8for the girl. I could see that the insults were making her look uglier, because she was so 9and alone. Then I wanted to 10her. I just didn’t know how to stop my schoolmates -11the night of our class roller-skating party.
Our whole class was there, 12Amy. Amy didn’t know how to skate, but I could see how much she wanted to have 13like the rest of us. So I skated over to her and took her by the hand. 14we began the journey together around the skating rink. She just smiled, and every once in a while she would laugh in excitement.
On the school bus the next morning, there was much 15about Amy and me skating together. But 16insulted her or me. And they didn’t do that for the rest of the year. I 17heard from Amy again after the school year. But I’ve always 18that I changed her life for the better.
She changed my19. After becoming her friend, I no longer tried to impress people by trying to 20like them. I became myself.

I’ve loved my mother’s desk since I was just tall enough to see above the top of it as mother sat doing letters. Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pen, and white paper, I decided that the act of 1 must be the most 2 thing in the world.
Years later, during her final illness, mother 3 different things for my sister and brother. “But the 4”, she said, “is for Elizabeth”.
I never saw her angry, and never saw her cry. I knew she 5 me, she showed it in action. But 6 a young girl, I wanted heart-to-heart talks 7 mother and daughter. They never happened. And a gulf(深渊) opened between us. I was “too emotional”. 8 she lived “on the surface”.
As years passed and I graduated from college, I loved my mother and I wrote to her in 9 words and asked her to let me know in any way she chose that she did 10 me.
I posted the letter and waited for her answer. 11 came. My hope turned to 12, then little interest, finally, peace --- it seemed that nothing happened. I couldn’t be sure that the 13 had even got to Mother. I only knew that I had written it, and I could 14 trying to make her into someone she was not.
Now the 15 of her desk told me, as she’d 16 been able to, that she was 17 that writing was my chosen work. I 18 the desk carefully and found some papers 19---- a photo of my father and a one-page letter, folded and refolded many times.
“Give me an answer”, my letter asks, “in any way you chose”. Mother, you always chose the 20 that speaks louder than words.

I’ll never forget May 12, 2008, we were having classes at Beichuan Middle School , Sichuan Province, when a huge1hit the area.
At about 2:28 p.m, our2, Mr.Wang, was teaching us singing on the fourth floor on the teaching building.3we felt the building shaking violently. It was an earthquake! Our building starting to4. It was too late to rush out to the5. We were told to hide under the desks.6later, the whole building fell down. We were7in ruins. We couldn’t move at all. No one could really imagine at that split second, how much pain we had8or how desperate(绝望的) we felt as we waited to be9. I heard Mr. Wang calling our names again and again… .
Hours later, some people came to rescue and10of us were saved.
Later, I11this huge earthquake scaled 8.0 magnitude. It hit several provinces, including Sichuan, Gansu and Shanxi. So far it has12more than 80,000 and injured 360,000. My hometown ----Beichuan was13the worst-hit areas. Our school , which was14filled with vigor(活力) and laughter, was a dead valley.
Words after such a15could appear nothing but empty and pointless. So many people’s lives were taken away, so much16was done and the whole city was17. Beichuan has become a history.
Now , some of my classmates and I were18to study in a middle school in Jiangsu Province. I still19dreaming and still strive for a better future: to make our homes beautiful yet20.
May victims rest in peace. May survivors live to be stronger.
