.But no—he had to do this. He had spent so much time considering it that he couldn’t
16
like that. His hands were hot and sticky and his mouth felt dry. At last the door of the office opened . The woman who had gone in an hour earlier came out looking very
17
with herself. She smiled sympathetically at James. At that moment James
18
her. The managing director then appeared at the office door. “Would you like to come in now, Mr Davis? I’m sorry to have kept you waiting.” James suddenly
19
that he had gone home after all. He got up, legs
20
and forehead sweating and wondered whether he looked as terrified as he felt.

Some people were steaming peas under a tree in order to make a meal for their horses. Up in the branches sat a monkey,

"Aha" thought the monkey. “I spot my

Suddenly one pea fell.
"Oh dear! Oh my pea!" cried the monkey. The other peas

he climbed down the trunk to hunt for his lost pea on the ground. At this time, the men came back. When they saw a monkey

"After all," said he to himself, “it was

one pea.” But he ought to have thought of that

,for now all the other peas had gone too.
That day the monkey had to content himself with the

of boiled peas for dinner, and I hope the

in future.

One day before Christmas, all of us children from the Children's Home Society Orphanage(孤儿院) were taken to the Mayflower Hotel in downtown to attend a Christmas party.
After the man on the stage said a prayer(祈祷), we were told to
1
. Within minutes we were
2
a meal which was fit for a king. I ate
3
I could eat no more. As we ate, Santa Clause came walking out onto the
4
. The kids cheered with
5
. Everyone began clapping their hands and yelling as
6
as they could.
I too was excited
7
but I knew better than to yell(叫喊)out loud or to jump up and scream. Mrs. Winters, the head matron, sat only three seats from me. She had
8
it very clear to everyone that we were tobehaveourselves in "a proper manner" and that there was to be "no yelling or shouting".
One orphan
9
was led up onto the stage and each kid was handed a
10
by Santa Claus himself.
As the line became shorter and shorter my
11
finally came. He smiled at me. Then he reached over and handed me a
12
box which had two gold ribbons(丝带) on it. As I leaned(向前倾) to take the box I tripped and I
13
to my knees. Santa reached over and helped me to my feet.
"Move
14
Kiser." called out Mrs. Winters.
I was now leaning against Santa Claus' leg and I was looking
15
into his eyes. His face was less than an inch from mine.
"Can I
16
you Santa?" I asked him.
The next thing I knew Mrs. Winters had caught me up by my shirt collar and was
17
me away from the line of children.
I sat down in my chair just crying. Once in a while I would
18
at the stage to see if my gift was still sitting by Santa Claus.
When we all lined up waiting, I
19
"HO HO HO" coming from behind me.
As I
20
, there stood Santa Claus holding my large box. Then he knelt down and he hugged my neck as hard as he could.

Just how popular was Mini? Very. Every year, her classmates voted her
1
the favourite student. She was so easy to
2
along with that the number of friends she had by far outnumbered (压倒)those of anyone else in her group.
One day the 10-year-old was
3
talking in the class and ordered to stay back as
4
. Staying back
5
doing something “useful”, like helping in the garden or library after school.
Now the school in which Mini
6
had a rule of sorts. Once a month, you could interchange your punishment schedule with someone else. If you
7
something else to do the day you were punished, you could
8
a friend to stand in for you. Of course, you had to return the favour, but in that same month itself. Otherwise the favour cancelled itself out. So the students who stayed back for others and wanted the favour repaid, found ways to be punished that very month.
9
it happened, on that day a very dear aunt was visiting Mini on her way back to America. That afternoon was the only
10
Mini had of seeing her for another five years. Mini needed someone to stand in for her. That was a problem though it was the last day of the month. So anyone who helped her, would do so out of friendship's sake alone. She sought out Preeti, her “best'”friend. "Oh no Mini, I can't," Preeti said. "I have to coach my brother for his nursery entrance test. The kid just can't seem to get into any decent (体面的)school." And she spent a good
11
of time telling Mini of her brother's problems.
"Mohit,
12
you stay back for me?" Mini asked another friend who was dribbling a ball(运球) in the playground. She knew he often just hung around after school. "To help the librarian? I
13
you'd told me earlier. I have to go to a relative's house with my father. Some other day perhaps," and
14
that Mohit fled.
By now, Mini was beginning to
15
if even one of her friends would
16
to stay. But she tried again. Three
17
friends and each one refused. Of course, no one said "no" outright. Mini was a great pal, after all. But each had a “reason”why they couldn't take her place that afternoon, and if only it were some other day...
So, after school Mini stayed back to help the
18
, Ms Mathur. And, when the remote Ms Mathur found her crying after everyone had left, it was she
19
surprised Mini by allowing her to leave to meet her aunt. "Some popularity I have," Mini murmured(嘟囔) to herself, as she went home. "I may have many friends, but in reality I have

I got a cancer when I was 18. This was a big deal for someone to
1
. I chose to fight. After treatments, I
2
from my illness. Life couldn’t have been any
3
. When I became fit years later, I met a wonderful man and got married.
4
, I still felt something missing and eager to find my
5
.
As my 20-year anniversary (周年纪念) of being a cancer
6
approached, I wanted to do something special and
7
. I organized a fundraiser, calling it “A Mission (使命) of Love” and thanks to my
8
family and friends, raised﹩4,000 for St. Jude’s, planning to
9
it myself. Three quarters of the money would be given as a (n)
10
to the hospital, and what was left would go toward buying
11
for the children. I also organized a T-shirt
12
activity for any child who felt well enough.
Thanksgiving Day seemed the most
13
day of the year for the mission, and so it was all arranged. We went to a store and
14
three shopping carts with toys. It was
15
we were celebrities (名人) when the employees and other shoppers knew what we were doing.
On Thanksgiving Day, as we got to St. Jude’s, I became
16
emotional, as my eyes were filled with tears of
17
. After dropping the toys off, we arrived where six children were waiting anxiously to begin painting. To me, it was as though they weren’t sick, and to see them smile was the greatest gift I could have ever
18
.
Leaving there that day, I knew I had finally found my purpose. All of us are born for a reason, but all of us don’t
19
why. Success in life has nothing to do with what you
20
in life. It’s what you do for others.

On the first day of the sixth grade, I noticed one little girl called Amy on the school bus. “ Don’t
1
her,” warned Lauren, who sat beside me. “or they will make fun of you.”
Amy had many
2
differences - lots of reasons for other kids to make fun of her. Her eyes weren’t straight. Her glasses were an inch thick. And she had really uneven teeth.
Every day
3
we drove to and from school, kids would shout insults(侮辱) at Amy. “God,what a strange face! Stop
4
me!”“Mr. Rolland (the driver)! Amy took off her glasses, and now her eyes are frightening me.
5
her put them back on!” For a while I shouted my
6
of insults, just so I’d fit in.
7
, I didn’t want them to treat me the same way they treated Amy.
But while I was insulting her, my heart
8
for the girl. I could see that the insults were making her look uglier, because she was so
9
and alone. Then I wanted to
10
her. I just didn’t know how to stop my schoolmates -
11
the night of our class roller-skating party.
Our whole class was there,

Amy. Amy didn’t know how to skate, but I could see how much she wanted to have
13
like the rest of us. So I skated over to her and took her by the hand.
14
we began the journey together around the skating rink. She just smiled, and every once in a while she would laugh in excitement.
On the school bus the next morning, there was much
15
about Amy and me skating together. But
16
insulted her or me. And they didn’t do that for the rest of the year. I
17
heard from Amy again after the school year. But I’ve always
18
that I changed her life for the better.
She changed my
19
. After becoming her friend, I no longer tried to impress people by trying to
20
like them. I became myself.

I’ve loved my mother’s desk since I was just tall enough to see above the top of it as mother sat doing letters. Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pen, and white paper, I decided that the act of
1
must be the most
2
thing in the world.
Years later, during her final illness, mother
3
different things for my sister and brother. “But the
4
”, she said, “is for Elizabeth”.
I never saw her angry, and never saw her cry. I knew she
5
me, she showed it in action. But
6
a young girl, I wanted heart-to-heart talks
7
mother and daughter. They never happened. And a gulf(深渊) opened between us. I was “too emotional”.
8
she lived “on the surface”.
As years passed and I graduated from college, I loved my mother and I wrote to her in
9
words and asked her to let me know in any way she chose that she did
10
me.
I posted the letter and waited for her answer.
11
came. My hope turned to
12
, then little interest, finally, peace --- it seemed that nothing happened. I couldn’t be sure that the
13
had even got to Mother. I only knew that I had written it, and I could
14
trying to make her into someone she was not.
Now the
15
of her desk told me, as she’d
16
been able to, that she was
17
that writing was my chosen work. I
18
the desk carefully and found some papers
19
---- a photo of my father and a one-page letter, folded and refolded many times.
“Give me an answer”, my letter asks, “in any way you chose”. Mother, you always chose the

I’ll never forget May 12, 2008, we were having classes at Beichuan Middle School , Sichuan Province, when a huge
1
hit the area.
At about 2:28 p.m, our
2
, Mr.Wang, was teaching us singing on the fourth floor on the teaching building.
3
we felt the building shaking violently. It was an earthquake! Our building starting to
4
. It was too late to rush out to the
5
. We were told to hide under the desks.
6
later, the whole building fell down. We were
7
in ruins. We couldn’t move at all. No one could really imagine at that split second, how much pain we had
8
or how desperate(绝望的) we felt as we waited to be
9
. I heard Mr. Wang calling our names again and again… .
Hours later, some people came to rescue and
10
of us were saved.
Later, I
11
this huge earthquake scaled 8.0 magnitude. It hit several provinces, including Sichuan, Gansu and Shanxi. So far it has
12
more than 80,000 and injured 360,000. My hometown ----Beichuan was
13
the worst-hit areas. Our school , which was
14
filled with vigor(活力) and laughter, was a dead valley.
Words after such a
15
could appear nothing but empty and pointless. So many people’s lives were taken away, so much
16
was done and the whole city was
17
. Beichuan has become a history.
Now , some of my classmates and I were
18
to study in a middle school in Jiangsu Province. I still
19
dreaming and still strive for a better future: to make our homes beautiful yet
20
.
May victims rest in peace. May survivors live to be stronger.
