The purpose of a letter of application(求职信) is to help you to “sell” yourself. It should state
1
the job you want, and should tell what your abilities are and what you have
2
. It should be simple, human, personal and brief without
3
out any necessary facts.
In writing a letter of application, keep in
4
that the things a possible employer is most
5
to want to know about are your qualifications(条件), your achievements and your aims. The opening paragraph is perhaps the most important part.
6
the first few sentences fail to
7
the reader’s attention, the rest of the letter may not be
8
at all. Try to key your opening remarks to the needs or interests of the employer not
9
your own need or desires. For example, instead of beginning with “I saw your
10
in today’s newspaper,” you might say “I have made a careful
11
of your advertising during the past six months” or “I have made a survey in my neighborhood to find out how many housewives
12
your product and why they like it. ”
Try to
13
generalities. Be clear about the kind of job for which you are now
14
. College graduates looking for their first positions often ask “What can I
15
in a letter? Employers want experience—which, naturally, no
16
has.” The answer is that everything you have ever done is
17
.
It is important to write a good strong closing for your letter.
18
a specific request for an interview or give the possible employer something definite to do or expect. An excellent
19
is to enclose(内附) a stamped, self-addressed envelope with your letter. That makes it
20
for a possible employer to get in touch with you.

That holiday morning I didn’t have to attend school. Usually, on holidays, Mother
1
me to sleep in. And I would certainly take full advantage of it. On this particular morning,
2
,I felt like getting up early.
I stood by my window overlooking the
3
, having nothing better to do. But as it turned out, I was soon to learn about something
4
in life.
As I watched several people go by, get into their cars and go off, I
5
an old man on a bicycle with a bucket on its
6
and a basket rags and bottles on its back-carriage. He
7
from one car to another, washing and cleaning them. From the water on the ground, it seemed that he had already
8
washing and cleaning about a dozen or more cars. He must have begun to work quite early in the morning.
Several thoughts
9
my mind as I watched him work. He wasn’t well-dressed. He had on a pair of shorts and a(n)
10
T-shirt. The bicycle he rode was not by any means the kind modern
11
would want to be seen riding on. But he seemed
12
with life. There he was, working hard at his small business,
13
at passers-by and stopping to chat now and then
14
elderly men and women on their way to the market nearby.
There was a noticeable touch of
15
in the way he seemed to be doing things—
16
the windscreen (挡风玻璃), then standing back to admire it; scrubbing (擦净) the wheels and
17
, standing back to see what they look like after the scrub.
It was a
18
to learn, I felt. At no age need one have to beg for a
19
if one has good health and is willing to work hard. For a while I felt
20
of myself. Young as I am—just sixteen, and there was this old man who must have been usefully engaged perhaps before the sun appeared above the horizon.

This was the morning, when Jeremy,
1
years old, was to begin his duck shooting. He had
2
the whole idea ever since his father had bought him
3
and had promised him a __33__to this island. But he loved his father and wanted to
4
him.
They came to the beach. To ease the sense of fear, he took a
5
of his father, then he put the camera aside and picked up the gun. His father said happily, “I’ve been
6
a long time for this day. I’11 let you
7
.” He leaned (屈身) forward, eyes narrowed. “There is a small flight(一群) now. Keep your head down; I’11 give you the
8
.”
Jeremy’s heart was beating
9
. “No, don’t let them come, please!” But they came, closer, closer... “Now, take them!” cried his father. Jeremy felt his body
10
. He stood up, leaned into the gun the
11
his father taught him. In the same distance, the ducks saw the gunners and flared (突然飞去) wildly. For a second he hung there balanced between life and death. There was no sound. Jeremy stood
12
, seizing the gun.
“What happened?
13
didn’t you shoot?” his father said in a controlled voice. The boy didn’t answer. His lips were trembling.
“Because they were so
14
,” he said and burst into tears. He sat down, face buried in his hands and wept. All
15
of pleasing his father was gone. He had his chance and he failed .
For a moment his father was
16
. And then he said, “Let’s try again.” Jeremy didn’t lower his hands. “It’s no use, I can’t.”
“Hurry, you’11 miss them. Here!” Gold metal touched Jeremy. He
17
up, unbelieving . His father was handing the camera to him, and said softly, “Quick!,” Jeremy stood up and pressed his shutter release(快门) button in a flash. “I got them!” His face was bright.
Jeremy saw that there was no disappointment in his father’s eyes,
18
pride and love. “I’11 always love shooting. But that doesn’t mean you
19
. Sometimes it takes as much
20
not to do a thing as to do it.” He paused. “I think you could teach me how to operate that camera .”

Rubber ducks are being used to help scientists understand global warming and melting glaciers. NASA researchers have
1
90 ducks into holes in Greenland's fastest moving glacier, the Jakobshavn Glacier between Greenland and Canada. The
2
have each been marked with the words "science experiment" along with an e-mail address. If they are found scientists will be able to
3
how the water moves through the ice and provide information about the
4
of glaciers. Scientists are still
5
about why glaciers speed up in summer and head towards the sea. One theory is that as the summer sun melts ice on top of the glacier's surface, the water moves to the bottom of the glacier, where it helps to
6
the movement of ice toward the coast. The Jakobshavn Glacier is believed to be the
7
of the iceberg that sank the Titanic in 1912. Robert Jones, the experiment organizer, said none of the ducks had been
8
yet. "We haven't heard back but it may take some time until somebody actually finds it and decides to send us a/an
9
that they have found it," he said. "These are places that are
10
so there aren't people walking around."

When a rather dirty, poorly dressed person kneels at your feet and puts out his hands to beg
1
a few coins, do you hurry on, not
2
what to do, or do you feel sad and hurriedly
3
some money? What should our attitude
4
beggars be? There can be no question that the world is full of terribly sad stories. It
5
be terrible to have no idea where our next meal is going to come from. It seems
6
not to give some money to beggars.
7
, most of the world's great religions order us to be open-hearted and
8
what we have with those less lucky than ourselves. But has the world changed? Maybe what was morally right in the old days,
9
one knew exactly who in the village had suffered misfortune and needed help, is no longer the best idea. Quite a few people will not give to beggars. Let us look at their
10
.
First, some believe that many city beggars dress up
11
to look pitiable and actually make a good
12
from begging. Giving to beggars only encourages this sort of evil.
13
, there is the worry that the money you give will be spent on beer, wine or drugs.
Thirdly, there is the opinion
14
there is no real excuse for begging. One might be poor, but that is no reason for losing one's sense of
15
and self-dependence.
There is an opinion that the problem should be handled by the government
16
ordinary people. Some people think beggars should go to the local government department and
17
help.
It is hard to come to any final conclusion: there are various
18
and we must
19
them differently. A few coins can save a life in some situations, and even if the money is wasted, that does not take away the moral goodness of the

Preparing for tomorrow
Sixth-grade schoolteacher Ms.Shelton believed in readiness.Students remembered how she walked in on the first day of class and began writing words of eighth-grade on the
1
.They quickly protested that the words were not on their
2
and they couldn’t learn them.
Their teacher insisted that the students could and would learn these
3
.She said that she would teach them something that should be given.Ms.Shelton
4
by saying that one of the students in the classroom could go on to
5
, maybe even be president someday, and she wanted to prepare them for that day.
Ms.Shelton spoke those words many years ago.
6
did she know that someday one of her students—Jesse Jackson—would take them
7
.She believed that if they were well prepared, they could
8
high goals.
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “People only see what they are
9
to see.” If that’s true, then it is also
10
that they only become what they are prepared to become. And many things in life are just about getting ready.
“I want to be doing something more
11
with my life than what I am doing now,” a young man once said to me.He
12
what he was doing was just not that important.Other people have said things to me such as, “I only
13
I had a meaningful relationship.” And, “I’d really like to get a better job, but I just don’t see
14
.”
You fill in the blanks. What is it you would like to
15
that isn’t happening? Perhaps the answer is that you are not yet
16
.Maybe you need more time to prepare before you are truly ready for that which you
17
.
Think of today as another chance to
18
yourself for the exciting future you are looking for.Today is not wasted. If you desire more from
19
, then you can use today as training. For you will experience only what you are prepared to
20
.Something wonderful can happen. And you can use today to get ready for tomorrow.

At the cheers of the crowd,I slipped out to thank Heaven for the warm and considerate people making it possible for my

Nowadays air pollution is something that is hardly questioned any more. However, I still can’t walk down the street in any of the big cities without
8
that people are
9
the air pollution. It is time for the government departments of the world to introduce emission(废气排放) controls on all cars and
10
the public transport system(公共交通体系) to encourage people to
11
their cars at home. A friend of mine takes flying lesson each morning and it really makes him

when he climbs above the smog layer(烟雾) and looks down
13
it and thinks: “I’m breathing that!” this kind of
14
results from the bad management of resources. Waste things can
15
should be treated properly. House building, road

national parks set up to keep the most beautiful parts of our countries in their natural

My Forever Valentine我永远的“情人”
Valentine’s Day was the time my father chose to show his love for the special people in his life. Over the years I fondly (天真的) thought
1
him as my “Valentine man”.
My first recollection of the
2
he could bring to Valentine’s Day came when I was six. That morning at the breakfast table I found a card and a gift-wrapped package at my chair. The card was
3
“Love, Dad” and the gift was a ring with a small piece of red glass to
4
my birthstone, a ruby (红宝石). There is
5
difference between red glass and rubies to a child of six, and I remember
6
that ring with pride that all the cards in the world
7
not surpass (超越).
8
I grew older, the gifts gave
9
to heart-shaped boxes filled with my
10
chocolate and always included a
11
card signed “Love, Dad”. In those years my thank-you became
12
of a perfunctory (敷衍) response. The cards seemed less
13
, and I took for granted that the Valentine would
14
be there. I had
15
my hopes and dreams in receiving cards and gifts from “significant others” and “Love Dad” just didn’t seem quite
16
.
His final card remains on my desk today. It’s a
17
of how special fathers can be and how important it has been to me over the years to know that I had a father who continued a
18
of love with simple acts of understanding and an ability to express happiness over the people in his life.
Those things never
19
, nor does the memory of a man who never
20
being my Valentine.
