The purpose of a letter of application(求职信) is to help you to “sell” yourself. It should state1 the job you want, and should tell what your abilities are and what you have 2. It should be simple, human, personal and brief without 3 out any necessary facts.
In writing a letter of application, keep in 4 that the things a possible employer is most 5 to want to know about are your qualifications(条件), your achievements and your aims. The opening paragraph is perhaps the most important part. 6 the first few sentences fail to 7 the reader’s attention, the rest of the letter may not be 8 at all. Try to key your opening remarks to the needs or interests of the employer not 9 your own need or desires. For example, instead of beginning with “I saw your 10 in today’s newspaper,” you might say “I have made a careful 11 of your advertising during the past six months” or “I have made a survey in my neighborhood to find out how many housewives 12 your product and why they like it. ”
Try to 13 generalities. Be clear about the kind of job for which you are now 14. College graduates looking for their first positions often ask “What can I 15 in a letter? Employers want experience—which, naturally, no 16 has.” The answer is that everything you have ever done is 17.
It is important to write a good strong closing for your letter. 18 a specific request for an interview or give the possible employer something definite to do or expect. An excellent 19 is to enclose(内附) a stamped, self-addressed envelope with your letter. That makes it 20 for a possible employer to get in touch with you.

That holiday morning I didn’t have to attend school. Usually, on holidays, Mother1me to sleep in. And I would certainly take full advantage of it. On this particular morning,2,I felt like getting up early.
I stood by my window overlooking the3, having nothing better to do. But as it turned out, I was soon to learn about something4 in life.
As I watched several people go by, get into their cars and go off, I5 an old man on a bicycle with a bucket on its6 and a basket rags and bottles on its back-carriage. He7 from one car to another, washing and cleaning them. From the water on the ground, it seemed that he had already8 washing and cleaning about a dozen or more cars. He must have begun to work quite early in the morning.
Several thoughts9my mind as I watched him work. He wasn’t well-dressed. He had on a pair of shorts and a(n)10 T-shirt. The bicycle he rode was not by any means the kind modern11would want to be seen riding on. But he seemed12 with life. There he was, working hard at his small business,13 at passers-by and stopping to chat now and then14 elderly men and women on their way to the market nearby.
There was a noticeable touch of15 in the way he seemed to be doing things—16the windscreen (挡风玻璃), then standing back to admire it; scrubbing (擦净) the wheels and17, standing back to see what they look like after the scrub.
It was a18 to learn, I felt. At no age need one have to beg for a19if one has good health and is willing to work hard. For a while I felt20 of myself. Young as I am—just sixteen, and there was this old man who must have been usefully engaged perhaps before the sun appeared above the horizon.

This was the morning, when Jeremy,1years old, was to begin his duck shooting. He had2the whole idea ever since his father had bought him3and had promised him a __33__to this island. But he loved his father and wanted to4him.
They came to the beach. To ease the sense of fear, he took a5of his father, then he put the camera aside and picked up the gun. His father said happily, “I’ve been6a long time for this day. I’11 let you7.” He leaned (屈身) forward, eyes narrowed. “There is a small flight(一群) now. Keep your head down; I’11 give you the8.”
Jeremy’s heart was beating9. “No, don’t let them come, please!” But they came, closer, closer... “Now, take them!” cried his father. Jeremy felt his body10. He stood up, leaned into the gun the11his father taught him. In the same distance, the ducks saw the gunners and flared (突然飞去) wildly. For a second he hung there balanced between life and death. There was no sound. Jeremy stood12, seizing the gun.
“What happened?13didn’t you shoot?” his father said in a controlled voice. The boy didn’t answer. His lips were trembling.
“Because they were so14,” he said and burst into tears. He sat down, face buried in his hands and wept. All15of pleasing his father was gone. He had his chance and he failed .
For a moment his father was16. And then he said, “Let’s try again.” Jeremy didn’t lower his hands. “It’s no use, I can’t.”
“Hurry, you’11 miss them. Here!” Gold metal touched Jeremy. He17up, unbelieving . His father was handing the camera to him, and said softly, “Quick!,” Jeremy stood up and pressed his shutter release(快门) button in a flash. “I got them!” His face was bright.
Jeremy saw that there was no disappointment in his father’s eyes,18pride and love. “I’11 always love shooting. But that doesn’t mean you19. Sometimes it takes as much20not to do a thing as to do it.” He paused. “I think you could teach me how to operate that camera .”

When a rather dirty, poorly dressed person kneels at your feet and puts out his hands to beg 1a few coins, do you hurry on, not 2what to do, or do you feel sad and hurriedly3some money? What should our attitude4beggars be? There can be no question that the world is full of terribly sad stories. It5be terrible to have no idea where our next meal is going to come from. It seems 6not to give some money to beggars.
7, most of the world's great religions order us to be open-hearted and 8what we have with those less lucky than ourselves. But has the world changed? Maybe what was morally right in the old days, 9one knew exactly who in the village had suffered misfortune and needed help, is no longer the best idea. Quite a few people will not give to beggars. Let us look at their10.
First, some believe that many city beggars dress up11to look pitiable and actually make a good12from begging. Giving to beggars only encourages this sort of evil.
13, there is the worry that the money you give will be spent on beer, wine or drugs.
Thirdly, there is the opinion14there is no real excuse for begging. One might be poor, but that is no reason for losing one's sense of15and self-dependence.
There is an opinion that the problem should be handled by the government16ordinary people. Some people think beggars should go to the local government department and17help.
It is hard to come to any final conclusion: there are various18and we must19them differently. A few coins can save a life in some situations, and even if the money is wasted, that does not take away the moral goodness of the20.

I had planted different hot peppers in my garden. A Mexican fellow called Sam worked for me. He1 hot peppers, too. It was late summer and a beautiful sunny day. My son, Marcus, eight, and my daughter, Ellen, ten, picked several2hot peppers and entered our workroom, with their3.They wanted to see if Sam could4more hot peppers than I. After a little joking with them we agreed to the contest but they had to5,too. That was not6terms for them so they left the room.
They7about an hour later with a new proposal and new hot peppers they had just picked.8they had reasoned that when a pepper was9in color it was the hottest kind. Marcus and Ellen would eat the green colored peppers 10Sam and I would eat the red colored peppers. Giving Sam a wink(使眼色),we11. Showing good sportsmanship(体育精神),I had the kids12the peppers that Sam and I would eat. They picked the largest two red peppers. Then they picked a13green one for themselves. Knowing what was going to14,I told them I would make it15for them. I cut one pepper in half and removed the16to reduce the heat a little. The contest was one of speed rather than17.Each child had pepper in hand and was18to start .
Looking at my19I said, OK, on three. One, Two, THREE. So much happened all at once. Tears, screams and spitting running around, the children20their mouth with fast waving hands. A short time later, Sam and I agreed that the red tasted better than the green.

Preparing for tomorrow
Sixth-grade schoolteacher Ms.Shelton believed in readiness.Students remembered how she walked in on the first day of class and began writing words of eighth-grade on the1.They quickly protested that the words were not on their2and they couldn’t learn them.
Their teacher insisted that the students could and would learn these3.She said that she would teach them something that should be given.Ms.Shelton4by saying that one of the students in the classroom could go on to5, maybe even be president someday, and she wanted to prepare them for that day.
Ms.Shelton spoke those words many years ago.6did she know that someday one of her students—Jesse Jackson—would take them7.She believed that if they were well prepared, they could8high goals.
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “People only see what they are9to see.” If that’s true, then it is also10that they only become what they are prepared to become. And many things in life are just about getting ready.
“I want to be doing something more11with my life than what I am doing now,” a young man once said to me.He12what he was doing was just not that important.Other people have said things to me such as, “I only13I had a meaningful relationship.” And, “I’d really like to get a better job, but I just don’t see14.”
You fill in the blanks. What is it you would like to15that isn’t happening? Perhaps the answer is that you are not yet16.Maybe you need more time to prepare before you are truly ready for that which you17.
Think of today as another chance to18yourself for the exciting future you are looking for.Today is not wasted. If you desire more from19, then you can use today as training. For you will experience only what you are prepared to20.Something wonderful can happen. And you can use today to get ready for tomorrow.

“Go ahead and cry,”the doctor1 kindly. But I couldn’t cry then nor during the months that followed.
We sent her to a kindergarten in our neighborhood at age seven. I worried that she was the “2” child among twenty fiveyearolds.
3,positive things began to happen to Kristi in her school, and to her schoolmates, too. When talking big of their own accomplishments,Kristi’s classmates always took4 to praise her as well,“Kristi got all her spelling words right today.”No one would say that her spelling list was easier than anyone else’s.
During Kristi’s second year in school,she5 a very special challenge. The big public event of the term was a6 based on the final outcome of the year’s music and physical education activities. Kristi was7 in both. My husband and I felt8 about the day as well.
On the day of the program,Kristi 9 to be sick. Desperately I wanted to keep her home. Why let Kristi fail in a gymnasium10 with parents, students and teachers? What a simple11!But I finally got her onto the school bus.
Just as I had forced my daughter to go to school, now I forced myself to go,too. Then I knew Kristi’s12.Her class was divided into relay(接力) teams. With her slow and clumsy reactions, she would surely 13 her team.
But as Kristi’s turn to14 neared,a change took place in her team. The tallest boy in the line stepped15 Kristi and placed his hands on her waist. Two other boys stood a little ahead of her. The16 the player in front of Kristi stepped from the sack(bag),the two boys seized it and held it open while the tall boy17Kristi and dropped her neatly into the sack. A girl ahead took her hand and supported her until she gained her18.Then off Kristi hopped (跳跃),smiling and proud.
At the cheers of the crowd,I slipped out to thank Heaven for the warm and considerate people making it possible for my19daughter to be like her fellow human beings. Then I finally20.

Is the world really going mad? 1day I was sitting in a restaurant 2 a quick and a talk with a few friends when it suddenly 3me that almost everyone in the restaurant was smoking. It wasn’t long 4the whole room was 5with smoke. I asked with an apology for6 to open a window to stop myself 7!
Nowadays air pollution is something that is hardly questioned any more. However, I still can’t walk down the street in any of the big cities without 8that people are 9the air pollution. It is time for the government departments of the world to introduce emission(废气排放) controls on all cars and 10the public transport system(公共交通体系) to encourage people to 11their cars at home. A friend of mine takes flying lesson each morning and it really makes him 12when he climbs above the smog layer(烟雾) and looks down 13it and thinks: “I’m breathing that!” this kind of14results from the bad management of resources. Waste things can 15should be treated properly. House building, road 16, and industrial development are all earthmoving( or earth-reducing) operations and can change the balances of 17created over millions of years. I would like to 18serious studies done on all these main works before they are built. Also, there should be 19national parks set up to keep the most beautiful parts of our countries in their natural 20

My Forever Valentine我永远的“情人”
Valentine’s Day was the time my father chose to show his love for the special people in his life. Over the years I fondly (天真的) thought1him as my “Valentine man”.
My first recollection of the2he could bring to Valentine’s Day came when I was six. That morning at the breakfast table I found a card and a gift-wrapped package at my chair. The card was3“Love, Dad” and the gift was a ring with a small piece of red glass to4my birthstone, a ruby (红宝石). There is5difference between red glass and rubies to a child of six, and I remember6that ring with pride that all the cards in the world7not surpass (超越).
8I grew older, the gifts gave9to heart-shaped boxes filled with my10chocolate and always included a11card signed “Love, Dad”. In those years my thank-you became12of a perfunctory (敷衍) response. The cards seemed less13, and I took for granted that the Valentine would14be there. I had15my hopes and dreams in receiving cards and gifts from “significant others” and “Love Dad” just didn’t seem quite16.
His final card remains on my desk today. It’s a17of how special fathers can be and how important it has been to me over the years to know that I had a father who continued a18of love with simple acts of understanding and an ability to express happiness over the people in his life.
Those things never19, nor does the memory of a man who never20being my Valentine.
