Mr. Jones had always wanted to make a trip into the middle of Africa to shoot wild animals.
1
first he had no enough money, and then he was married. His wife had not wanted him to
2
her. At last his wife
3
to the trip if he allowed her to go, too.
“But it will be very uncomfortable,” Mr. Jones
4
her, “ It will be very hot and we shall live in a tent, and it
5
be dangerous. ”“I don’t care,” said his wife, “I want to go with you.” So they bought a big tent, camp beds, a refrigerator which did not need
6
and many other things which would make the trip
7
, and went off to the middle of Africa.
The first morning,
8
Mr. Jones took his gun and left the tent, he

his wife a bell and explained to her , “If you fall in
10
and you need me ,
11
this bell and I’11 come at once.”
After a few minutes, he heard the bell and returned
12
to the tent. “What’s the matter?” he asked.“
13
” said his wife, “I was only
14
the bell.” Mr. Jones went off, but after a quarter of an hour, the bell rang again .
Mr. Jones hurried back to the tent, but his wife said, “I’m
15
. I was cleaning our tent, and I knocked the bell over by mistake.” Mr. Jones returned to his
16
, but soon he heard the
17
once more. This time, when he got back to his

, the tent was burning and Mrs. Jones was lying on the ground, with
19
running from a big cut on her shoulder. “That’s better!” said Mrs. Jones. “This time the bell had been used

The day was Thankful Thursday, our “ regular day” of service. It’s a
1
tradition that my two little girls and I began years ago. On this
2
Thursday, we had no idea exactly what we were going to do.
3
along a busy road, we prayed for guidance in search of
4
our weekly Act of Kindness. My girls were
5
, and started shouting “ McDonald’s” . Suddenly I realized that almost every crossing I
6
was occupied by a beggar, and then it hit me! All these beggars must be hungry. Perfect! We were going to buy
7
for them.
It was a great way to
8
. The Act of Kindness was anonymous(匿名的),and we loved what we saw in the back view mirror: a
9
and delighted person holding up his lunch bag and just looking at us
10
we drove off.
We had come to the end of our “ route” where there was a small woman standing there, asking for
11
. We handed her our final lunch bag, and then made a U-turn to head back in the opposite direction for home. Unfortunately, the light stopped us. I was
12
and didn’t know quite how to behave.
“No one has ever done anything like this for me before,” the woman said with
13
. I replied, “Well, I’m glad that we were the first one.”
14
uneasy , and wanting to move the conversation along, I asked, “So, when do you think you’11 eat your lunch?”
“Oh honey, I’m not going to
15
this lunch.” I was confused , and she continued , “I have a little girl of my own at home and she just
16
McDonald’s , but I can never buy it for her because I just don’t have the
17
. You know what… tonight she is going to have McDonald’s !”
So many times I had
18
whether our Acts of Kindness were too small or insignificant to really
19
any difference . Yet in that moment, I recognized the
20
of Mother Teresa’s words, “We cannot do great things---only small things with great love.”

Butterfly’s wings
One day a small opening appeared on a cocoon(茧), a man sat and watched for the butterfly for several hours as it was struggling to
1
its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten
2
it could and it could go no further. So the man decided to
3
the butterfly: he took a pair of scissors and
4
the remaining part of the cocoon. The butterfly then
5
easily.
But it has a swollen(肿胀的)body and
6
wings. The man continued to
7
the butterfly because he expected that, at any moment, the
8
would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body, which would
9
the time span(跨度). Neither happened!
10
, the butterfly spent the rest of its life
11
around with a swollen body and small, shriveled(褶皱的)wings. It
12
was able to fly. What the man did in his
13
and haste(匆忙)did no good to the butterfly. He didn’t know the
14
cocoon and the struggle
15
for the butterfly to get through the tiny
16
were the natural way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings
17
it would be ready for flight once it achieved its
18
from the cocoon.
Sometimes the
19
is exactly what we need in our life. If we are allowed to go through our life without any
20
, it would not be a good thing to us. We would not be as strong as what we could have been.

A philosophy professor loved to teach students about important theories of the subject.Once, while his
1
was about to begin, he just closed the book and
2
stood before his class with some items on the table in front of him.Students were curious but the professor without looking at them

a very large and empty jar.And then he started to
4
it with small rocks.
5
the jar appeared full, the professor asked his students whether the jar was full
The entire class
6
that jar was indeed full.Next, the professor picked up some
7
and began pouring them into the jar.The moment pouring was
8
, he shook the jar lightly. As a result of that, all the small rocks

the open areas between the rocks comfortably.
Professor again asked the students if the jar is full.Same
10
from the class like before.Professor
11
la bit but silently, and this time he picked up a box of sand.He poured the box into the jar and sand filled the entire
12
spaces.At the same time, professor
13
his question to the class, if the jar was full? Yes again.
Professor now
14
towards the class and said, this jar
15
your life. All the things in the jar I poured mean some important lessons. The rocks are the most important things,
16
is family, your partner, health and your
17
.Even if everything else in your life goes away but the rocks remains there, your life would still be full
18
the most important things are still present in your life.Pebbles represent other significant things like car, house and job etc.And the sand is the small stuff or everything else.
If your time and
19
is spent on small stuff then there is no

for the pebbles or the rocks or in other words, most important things of your life.

My job was to make classroom observations and encourage a training program that would enable students to feel good about themselves and take charge of their lives. Donna was one of the volunteer teachers who participated in this
1
.
One day, I entered Donna’s classroom, took a seat in the back of the room and
2
.All the students were working on a task. The student next to me was filling her page with “I Can’ts.” “I can’t kick the soccer ball.” “I can’t get Debbie to like me.” Her page was half full and she showed no
3
of stopping. I walked down the row and found
4
was writing sentences, describing things they couldn’t do.
By this time the activity aroused my
5
, so I decided to check with the teacher to see what was going on,
6
I noticed she too was busy writing “I can’t get John’s mother to come for a parents’ meeting.” …I felt it best not to interrupt.
After another ten minutes, the students were instructed to fold the papers in half and bring them to the front. They placed their “I Can’t” statements into an empty shoe box. Then Donna
7
hers. She put the lid on the box, tucked it under her arm and headed out the door.
Students followed the teacher. I followed the students. Halfway down the hallway Donna got a shovel(铲子) from the tool house, and then marched the students to the farthest corner of the playground. There they began to
8
. The box of “I Can’ts” was placed at the
9
of the hole and then quickly covered with dirt. At this point Donna announced, “Boys and girls, please join hands and
10
your heads.” They quickly formed a circle around the grave.
Donna delivered the eulogy(悼词).“Friends, we gathered here today to honor the memory of ‘I Can’t.’ He is
11
by his brothers and sisters ‘I Can’ and ‘I Will’. May ‘I Can’t’ rest in
12
. Amen!”
She turned the students
13
and marched them back into the classroom. They celebrated the
14
of “I Can’t”. Donna cut a large tombstone from paper. She wrote the words “I Can’t ”at the top and the date at the bottom, then hung it in the classroom. On those rare occasions when a student forgot and said, “I Can’t,” Donna
15
pointed to the paper tombstone. The student then remembered that “I Can’t” was dead and chose other statement.

The Squirrel and the Lion
A squirrel, merrily leaping on the branches of an oak tree, accidentally missed its hold and fell upon a lion who lay sound asleep at the trunk. His Majesty awoke in
1
, and displayed his terrific teeth to the
2
squirrel, who, in the most humble manner, begged
3
for the intrusion. “I grant you your life,” said the lion, “but on condition that you tell me the reason why you are always so lively and
4
, while my time passes so boringly.”
“Yes, sire,” replied the squirrel, “I will, in return for your mercy, tell you the secret. But he who speaks the truth ought to stand higher than he who
5
it; permit me, therefore, to jump up the tree.”
The lion agreed to this and when the squirrel was out of his
6
he thus addressed him: “You seek to know how I am always merry.
7
gives me a joyous mind, but sire, you are just lacking in it. Think of the many crimes and cruelties you have
8
. How many animals have you killed, while I have been
9
in carrying nuts to help my folks! You hate, and I love! Believe me, there is great meaning and truth in these words, and often have I heard my father observe when young: “Son, let your happiness be founded in virtue, and pleasure will be the constant

of your heart.”.

I am always eager to do experiments, especially chemistry ones. It's
1
to work with test tubes and beakers , even though sometimes my efforts end in failure. Experiments were fun for me
2
a recent accident.
The accident happened when I was heating a big test tube with an alcohol burner , chatting to my partner. All of a sudden, the tube cracked. Even though I jumped from my seat when I heard the crack, the hair on my forehead was burnt as I was leaning too close to the test tube.
3
I had no time to be sad about my hair: the liquid in the test tube poured onto the table and caught fire. I'd never
4
anything so bad! My mind went blank for a moment. Then I quickly covered the fire with a damp cloth to put it out.
The teacher told me that the test tube broke in half at the bottom because we didn't dry it properly before
5
it.
We calmed down and did the experiment, again. But our hearts were still
6
rapidly even after we walked out of the lab.
But my bad luck didn't end there! Since all our
7
was focused on the flames while we were in the lab, I didn't see the liquid falling onto my trousers.
During the following class, I felt a pain in my leg. Soon it became more and m6re painful and I touched the area with my fingers,
8
to make things better. But to my great
9
, the material of my trousers turned into powder! "Vitriol ! ! ! The terrible word came into my mind. I rushed out right away to wash and examine my poor skin.
10
, it was not a serious injury.
After changing my trousers I thought it's very important to have a serious attitude in chemistry class. Doing scientific experiments as a learner is no laughing matter.

Once upon a time there were two brothers who lived near each other. One day, they had a
1
because of some small things. And neither was willing to
2
each other.
One morning, there was a knock at door of the elder brother. He
3
it and found a man standing beside the door. “I’m a carpenter(木匠). I’m
4
a few days’ work. Perhaps you would have a few small jobs I could help with.”
“Yes,” said the elder brother. “I do have a job for you.
5
at that farm across the small river. It is my younger brother’s. We had a quarrel, so I won’t like to see his
6
any more. I want you to build me a 8-foot
7
. ”
The man said, “I think I understand the situation. Don’t worry. I’11 be able to do a job that makes you
8
” So the elder brother was very glad and left for the town nearby.
In the evening, the carpenter had just
9
his job when the elder brother returned. But he was
10
to find, instead of a fence, before him, stood a
11
, which went from one side of the river
12
the other! On the other
13
of bridge, was his younger brother.
“Do you know the name of the bridge?” The carpenter asked.
“No,” the elder brother was
14
“OK, I can tell you. Its name is understanding and
15
,” the carpenter smiled.
Suddenly they began to understand
16
. Surely, between two brothers there should be a bridge rather than a
17
. Standing on the bridge, they
18
each other’s hands with
19
in their eyes.
“Could you stay another few days? I’ve a lot of other work for you,” said the elder brother. “I’d love to
20
on,” the carpenter said. “But I have many more bridges to build.”

Jack had no choice but to have both his arms removed because of a severe accident after drinking a lot of alcohol. From then on, he has had to

on his younger brother, who became his shadow, never leaving him alone for years. Except for writing with his toes, he was totally unable to do

else. As the two brothers grew up together, they had their own problems and would often

. Finally, his younger brother went away and lived
4
, leaving him heartbroken and at a loss what to do.
5
, a misfortune befell(降临)a girl. One night she was preparing dinner when the kerosene light on the stove was overturned,
6
in a fire which took her hands away. Having decidedly

her sister’s willingness to help her, she determined to be thoroughly
8
. At school, she always studied hard. Most of all she learned to be self-reliant. “I am lucky. Though my
9
are broken, my heart can still fly.” she wrote in her blog.
One day, the young man and the girl were both invited to a(n)
10
programme. The boy told the television hostess about his
11
future, whereas the girl was full of
12
for her life. They were both asked to write something on a piece of paper with their

. The boy: My younger brother’s arms are my arms. The girl: Broken wings, flying heart.
Both of them had the same ordeal(痛苦经历), but their different
14
determined the nature of their lives. As seems the case,
15
disasters can strike our life at any time. How you handle the
16
when faced with it is the true

of your character. If you choose to
18
or escape from the ordeal, it will follow you wherever you go. But if you decide to be strong, the

will turn out to be a fortune on which new

will arise.
