I lay there buried alive under our house when the bomb hit our city. The great1started by the bomb came nearer and nearer to us as workers tried to2us. “Hurry!” they cried to one another as the flames (火焰) came nearer. At last they reached us and3me and my mother out from under everything4the flames reached us.
Later, as I thought of the pilot of the plane that5the bomb on our city, I cried, “I hate him. I hate him.” The people with marked faces from the 6of the bomb made me cry, “I hate him.” I saw people suffering (遭受) a terrible, 7death. Again and again I cried as I saw these people, “I hate him!”
Some time later, that man appeared in a meeting I8.As I looked at him, I 9him very much. Then I listened to what he told us of his 10the day when he dropped the bomb on our city. I heard him say, “When I flew over the city11we dropped the bomb, I cried, ‘Oh, God, what have I12’.” I could see that he found it 13to speak of that day.
As this happened I suddenly 14my hatred (仇恨) of him was 15. It only made me unhappy also. As I did this, it was as if a heavy load (负担)16my shoulders. Then I decided to 17him. I did so and my life was18.
I now help those who suffer from19other people. I try to help them to20everyone, as I am now able to do.

There at a secondhand clothing store in Northampton Mass, my 14-year-old son, John, and I noticed the coat. While the other coats drooped (低垂), this one looked as if it were1itself up. The coat was beautifully made, with a Fifth Avenue label and an2price of $28, which was popular just then with 3, but could cost several hundred dollars new. John tried it on and the4was perfect.
John5the coat to school the next day and came home with a big smile. “Did the kids like your coat?” I asked. “They loved it,” he said, 6folding it over the back of a chair and smoothing it flat. Over the next few weeks, a7came over John. Agreement replaced contrariness (作对) and8 discussion replaced fierce argument. He became more mannerly and9, eager to please. He would generously lend his younger brother his tapes and lecture him 10his behavior. When I mentioned this11to his teacher and wondered what caused the changes, she said laughing. “It 12be his coat!” Another teacher told him she was giving him a good mark not only because he had earned 13but because she liked his coat. At the library, we ran14a friend. “Could this be John?” he asked surprisingly,15John’s new height, appreciating the cut of his coat and holding out his hand, one gentleman to another.
John and I both know we should never 16a person’s clothes for the real person within them. 17, there is something to be said for wearing a standard of excellence for the world to see and for18what is on the inside with what is on the outside.
For John, it is a time when it is as easy to try on different19to life as it is to try on a coat. The whole world, the whole future is stretched out ahead, a vast landscape20all the doors are open. And he could picture himself walking through those doors wearing his wonderful, magical coat.

I believe being honest is one of the greatest gifts. I know they call it a lot of fancy names these days,like1and straightforward. And it’s still what2a man a good citizen. This is my code(准则),and I try to live by.
I’ve been in the taxi business for thirty-five years,3there is a lot about it that is not so good. Taxi drivers have to be rough and tumble(乱作一团) fellows to be able to take it in New York. You've got to be4to fight the New York traffic eight hours a day.
Because taxi drivers are tough, people get the5impression that they are bad. Taxi drivers are just like other people. Most of them will act as6fellows. Almost every week you read in the papers where a taxi driver7money or jewels or like that people leave in their8. If they weren't honest, you wouldn't be reading those stories in the papers. One time,I found an emerald(翡翠的)ring in my car. I remembered helping a lady with a lot of suitcases that day,so I went back to where I had 9her off. It took me almost two days to wait for her in order to return her10to her. I didn't get as much as “thank you.”11,I felt good because I had done what was right. I think I felt better than she 12.
I was born and brought up in Ireland until I was nineteen years old. I came to this country in 1913 where I13several jobs to earn a few dollars before joining the army in World War I. After being discharged(退伍),I bought my own car and have owned one ever since. It hasn’t been too easy14,but my wife takes care of our money and we have a good bit15 for a rainy day(一时之需). In all my years of driving a taxi,I have never had16 with the public, not even with drunks. Even if they get a little headstrong(顽固的) once in a while,I just agree with them and then they behave themselves.
People ask me about tips. As far as I know,17everyone will give you something, because most Americans are18generous. I always try to be nice to everyone, whether they19or not. I believe in God and try to be a good member of my parish(教区). I try to act toward others like I think God wants me to act. I have been trying this for a long time, and the20I try,the easier it gets.

I got lots of interesting experiences in a free school. At first I couldn’t believe it. There were no 1lin rows or loud-sounding bells, nor did anyone have to go to2. Although we lived “in”,3made us go to bed at a certain time; there was no “ lights out”.
The4thing was that practically all the students went to class, and very few people stayed up late at night. Only the new people stayed up or5class. The new ones always went wild6, but his wildness never lasted long. The freedom took some getting used to. Our teachers treated us like7; never did we have to8“ stand up”, “ sit down”, “ speak out”. I don’t9one student who didn’t try his best.
The subjects were the same as those in the10 school, but what a difference in the method! For example, in botany (植物学) we had 11 classes in the spring or fall, but instead we planted two gardens, a vegetable garden and a flower garden. Then in winter we each studied a few12things about what we had grown. In math the students built three different sizes of storerooms---small ones13, but usable. They did this instead of having lessons in the classroom. They really had a14time, too, designing everything, drawing the blueprints(蓝图;设计图), figuring out the angles and so on. I didn’t take 15 . But I could do the basic things with numbers. That’s16.
17 I think I am a18person for having gone to the school. I can read and write as well as anyone else of my age, and I think better. That’s probably a real big19between the free school and the regular school--- the amount of20.

How often do you change your hairstyle or ask for new dresses? You may be1to follow trends(潮流)in Western countries, but young people in the United States don’t care as much about2as you do.
A recent survey among high school 3in China, Japan, South Korea and the US found that 4teenagers care more about their appearance than young people in the US.
This survey was held in 156 high schools in the four countries. More than 7,000 teenagers were5about their views on life and the world. South Koreans, at 83 per cent, cared most about their looks. They were6by the Chinese and Japanese, while US students showed the least interest in fashion at only 33 per cent.
“The different results show7of cultural background,” said Sun Yunxiao from the China Youth and Children Research Centre. He explained that in the US there are many different8of beauty, so teens are more9to be confident about their appearance.
US teenagers’ high self-confidence is displayed in the10. About 85 per cent are happy with themselves. The percentage of self-confident Chinese students stands at only 30 per cent.
What’s11, US students showed more individuality, with 88 per cent12that “people should follow their own interests rather than13of others”. This is much14than South Korea’s 69 per cent, China’s 49 and Japan’s 48.
Japanese students, at 52 per cent, are most dissatisfied with modern society. Chinese and Koreans follow at second and15most dissatisfied.
16to the survey, Chinese students are happy and disciplined. They have a strong wish to make a difference.17Chinese students need to be more independent and learn how to relax,” said Sun.
The students have different18backgrounds. But home and places where friends gather are the favorite places all teens seek happiness.
Exams and worries about life after graduation cause much19among most of the teens20for the survey.

Armed with two over-packed suitcases, we arrived at the airport just in time for my flight. As I watched her unload my luggage, I could see the1in her eyes. One last hug and a final good-bye, and I would be on my way to a new life 2.“ You’d better go or you’11 miss your flight,” she said.
“I’11 3you,” I replied, and with those words I 4. By the time I reached the customs, I was 5. While boarding the plane I was still crying. I did not have the6to put my bag in the overhead locker, so I put it on the 7seat next to mine.
Born just fifteen months apart, we not only looked alike, we were alike. We both had that same mix of 8and fear of all things unknown to us. One sunny summer day I was playing outside when she came9to me and said, “ Want to come to the attic(阁楼)?” The answer was always “ 10”. We were frightened of the attic but also 11by its smells and sounds. Together we would get through masses of dust and look through a lot of boxes 12we found what we needed.
The plane shook 13and my bag fell onto the floor. My aspirin, hairbrush and some other things were 14on the floor. I 15over to gather them up when I saw a(an) 16little book in the middle of my belongings. It was a diary.
Immediately I 17my sister’s handwriting. “Hi, Sis. What a day it has been today. You let me know that you are moving abroad…” Only 18did I realize that my sister had been 19a diary for the past month.
I read about my sister’s comings and goings during the flight. Even though a large ocean 20us, at some point it felt like she was actually there.

One evening I heard a loud crash in our quiet neighborhood.1that evening, my wife had asked me to go to the store to get some soft drinks. It was a good time to let my teenage daughter Holly practice her2 , so I sent her to the store in my truck. At dinner my son talked about how much he liked my3.I enjoyed having it, but I said: "Guy, my heart is not set on that truck.I like it but it is 4 metal and won' t last forever." After hearing the loud noise, the whole 5ran outside. My son shouted: "Dad, Dad, Holly crashed your truck."
My heart sank and my mind was6with conflicting thoughts. Was anyone hurt? Who else was involved? As I ran to the door, I heard a voice in my 7saying: "Here is a chance to show Holly what you really 8.She' 11 never forget it."
The accident had occurred in my own driveway.Holly had crashed my truck into our other car. Holly was not9physically but when I reached her, she was crying and saying: " Oh, Dad, I’m sorry.I know how much you love this truck." I held her in my arms as she cried.
Later that week a friend10by and asked what had happened to my truck.I told her the whole11.Her eyes moistened(润湿) and she said: "That happened to me when I was a girl.I12my dad' s car and ran into a log that had fallen13the road.I ruined the car. When I got home my Dad knocked me to the ground and began to kick me.
Over 40 years later, she still felt the 14of the night. It was a deep wound on her 15 .
I remember how16 Holly was on the night she crashed our truck, and how I 17her.One day, when Holly thinks 18

Nowadays, a hospital always manages to keep its beds full. This is good on the one hand, and it’s bad on1hand.
One day, I went to see a sick friend at the hospital. I first went to the2desk, where I could get a permit to visit the patient.
3I could ask which room my friend was in, the lady set down my name, age, filled out a form and 4a bell. I was just about to tell her what I was coming for when two men arrived with a wheelchair, 5me in it and pushed me down the hall.
“I’m not6,” I shouted. “I’m just looking for a friend.”
“When he comes,” one man said, “we’117him up to your room.”
In a minute I8myself in a small room. In no time they undressed me and covered some other things9me. One man said “If you need anything, press the button.”
“I want to get my10back.” I begged.
“Oh, you can11us,” a voice said, “Even if the12happens, we will see that your wife will get everything.” They left and locked the door13them.
I was trying to think of how to escape by the door when Dr. Ward came in with several of his14.
“Thank God you finally came,” I said.
“It hurts that badly?” he asked.
“No, on the contrary, I am not ill15.”
Dr. Ward looked16. “If you don’t feel any pain, that means it’s much more17than we expected.” Then he turned to his students: “This is the most difficult kind of patient to deal with because he refuses to18that he is ill. 19 he won’t tell us where it hurts, he will never be well again until we find the hurt out for20by doing exploratory surgery (手术探查) .”

Lulu is a brave pet in our shelter. As you know, there are a lot of forest fires during the summer season. Many forests are badly damaged by fire each year. Not far from our shelter, a forest caught fire during this hot summer. We were in a heat wave which had been1for three days.
Lulu rushed towards the forest where flames sent out a terrible2.I no longer had any hope that Lulu would come back to the shelter. In fact, I was waiting for the firemen to announce his3in the forest, when suddenly, a fireman burst into my shelter and informed me that my dog Lulu had 4to save four kittens(小猫) who were trapped by the flames.According to the fireman, Lulu seized the kittens, one by one moving them to a safe place.I immediately accompanied(陪同) the fireman to the forest to 5the rescued kittens. When we arrived 6the scene of the incident, we found Lulu was not there. Then we heard the 7of a dog from the forest barking furiously (猛烈地). I recognized it was my dog Lulu. The fireman followed the tracks of the dog until we found him barking 8by the side of an injured fireman who was lying on the ground and desperately(绝望地) waiting for rescue. Thanks to Lulu, four kittens and a fireman were saved.
That day, I was very proud of Lulu for his two heroic(英雄的)9toward the kittens and the fireman.Lulu showed much compassion (同情) for both animals like him and for a human being who was trying to 10the fire with his colleagues(同事).
This true story of genuine(真的) love and compassion shows us that pets are loving, caring and considerate(考虑周到的).We should love and protect them. One day they could do us a good turn.
