At the age of 13,I visited a doctor with my parents. As I sat in the examining chair, the doctor looked into my1.“She did inherit (继承) it,”he said with coldness.“You need to be prepared. There is no2 for this disease.”
My father 3a gene which,in most cases, results in blindness. I’d inherited the gene. He gradually4 his eyesight and so did I. At last we were both5 blind—he was fifty-seven years old,6 I was only twenty-eight.
My world7 as the darkness fell,8 the dreams my husband and I had for us and for our three little boys. But9 I tried to find some hope and10,my eyes were opened to a new realization.
My father had11 me not just failing eyesight, but an example of 12 in the face of hardships as well. We were all living in Bolivia in 1964 when he decided to 13 the family to America. He worked tirelessly to14 the right of living in the US.
Alone in the States,he15 his helplessness and lack of fluency in English. He managed to rent a small apartment, and nine months later, sent airline tickets for my mom,my brother and me.
Decades later,16 an American citizen,I look back at what he'd shown me. He set an example proving that determination is important to success. His17 taught me valuable lessons for my own path in the darkness.
I did the same as I stepped into a18 world. I fulfilled (完成) my own19 as a wife, mom,Sunday school teacher and Spanish interpreter. What I inherited from my father helped me to20 my life in a whole new light.

I had the privilege to visit the Bridge of Forgiveness in Palawan during the time when I was on the summer’s team.
After the long and exciting week,we had a chance to1the place where we were assigned(指定).We2the narrow hanging bridge made of two bamboos and a long rope which you can hold3for your life as you cross it. I was so afraid of4, especially here ,and I think most of us were not5to crossing so high a bridge6,our team leader told us that we must cross this bridge in order to see the splendid falls that lie out on the other7.
“As you cross this bridge, think about8difficult,but it is possible”.
Many times in our lives we face9that we don’t expect---broken relationships, betrayal(背叛)of a friend, etc.,and all we can do is10. But I noticed that life must go on, and all the burdens must be11through forgiveness---forgiveness of yourself and others.
I didn’t understand my cousin12she told me I should13all those unfriendly guys with14. But as I grow older,I realize that lying in the past15and guilt will not serve me well.
Once I forgave serious16,I noticed that I couldn’t forget them but every time I remembered them, I17. There aer no more pains brought just by the thought of them.
After all, life is good18all the hardships pains and difficulties, life teaches me to be19in facing and adversity(逆境)while at the same time it makes me20to those who suffer, If somebody does something terrible to me,I have to think back the bridge of forgiveness---difficult but possible.

Good advice is like medicine for the soul. What kind of1 have you recently received? Who do you go to get advice? Do you have a mentor(顾问)? A mentor is a2 adviser.
Parents, teachers and friends are often great3 . Sports figures, public officials, and nationally known figures can also be good4 of mentors, but a person with whom you have a personal relationship will most likely be able to5 you the best advice.
Mentors teach things that seem to be6 sense. Proverbs are wise old sayings that are common in every language and7 , and can sometimes be8 for a non-native to understand. For example, all9 glitters(闪烁)is not gold(some things are not as10 as they appear ).
Advice columns(栏目)11 newspapers and magazines are another way to12 advice.
Talk shows on radio and television are also very popular. Americans and Canadians love to13 themselves. Many people are not14 to ask for help or15 about a problem in order to receive advice. People generally will16 their own experience to17 their friends. Overcoming a difficult situation is18 respected in North America. People love to offer motivational (激发性的)19 and encouragement. One proverb, a friend in need is a friend indeed, shares the concept that a true friend will help you out when you are in20 .

I met Mrs. Neidl in the ninth grade on a stage-design team for a play and she was one of the directors. Almost instantly I loved her. She had an Unpleasant voice and a direct way of speaking, 1she was encouraging and inspiring. For some reason, she was impressed with my work and me.
Mrs. Neidl would ask me for my 2. She wanted to know how I thought we should 3things. At first I had no idea how to answer because I knew 4about stage design! But I slowly began to respond to her 5. It was cause and effect: She believed I had opinions, so I began to 6them. She trusted me to complete things, so I completed them perfectly. She loved how 7I was, so I began to show up to paint more and more. She believed in me, so I began to believe in myself.
Mrs. Neidl's 8that year was, "Try it. We can always paint over it 9!" I began to take 10. I had been so afraid of failing but suddenly there was no failing --- only things to be 11upon. I learned to dip my brush into the paint and 12create something.
The shy, quiet freshman achieved success that year. I was 13 in the program as "Student Art Assistant" because of the time and effort I'd put in. It was that year that I 14I wanted to spend the rest of my life doing stage design.
Being on that stage-design team 15Mrs. Neidl changed me completely. Not only was I stronger and more competent than I had thought, but I also 16 a strong interest and a world I hadn't known existed. She taught me not to 17what people think I should do: She taught me to take chances and not be 18. Mrs. Neidl was my comforter when I was upset. Her 19 in me has inspired me to do things that I never imagined 20.

People who use the water from one of these rivers often get3. The water may become so polluted that it4all the fish in the river. When these rivers finally reaches the5, it pollutes the ocean.
In many countries with6, human waste is piped directly into the sea without being dealt with. This is not7. Although the sea itself can break up the waste, beaches8become polluted.9scientists suggest people take the waste far out to sea in ships where the wind and waves break it down.
In 1989 an international law was passed to10people putting waste into the sea. It is now against the11to put anything into the sea nearby. Such rubbish as plastics may not be thrown12the sea anywhere. Other waste may be put into the sea, either 19 or more than 40 kilometers from land,13the nature of the materials.
The14of dealing with waste has become so great that several international organizations have been15to protect the world and control pollution.

Alice, my friend’s daughter, goes to an expensiveprivate school where she has a friend, Jane, who is on a full scholarship at this school.Jane has1economic resources—her father has been dead for years and her mother works 2 a maid.Although her mother works very hard, she can3support the family.Jane is very bright and gifted at4and that’s how she has got the scholarship, which included a(n)5for things like lunch, school uniform and music lessons.
Alice became friends with Jane and would6talk to her at lunch. She did it that way in order to avoid the other kids7her.
On her birthday last month, she8her new friend to her birthday party, but Jane said she couldn’t come.Alice wanted her to be9so much that she10on her coming.Eventually, the girl said, “I don’t have any11clothes that I could wear atyour birthday party.”After a brief pause, the girl remembered, “I have a12from my piano performance,” and asked, “Could I13a skirt from you?”
Alice was happy that her friend would be14to come and hurried home to ask her Mum15she could lend her friend one of her skirts. To her surprise, her Mum said, “No.”The daughter was very16and angrily said to her Mum, “17I could, I would give my friend all my clothes.” The Mother didn’t understand why her daughter should have had such an outburstas she’s normally very well18.
Finally, Alice explained to her Mother her friend’s19.Her Mother immediately changed her mind and said, “Yes.”She also encouraged her daughter not to feel like she should secretly be friends with Janebut to feelproud of her20with her.
So the true friendship seeks to give, not to take; to help, not to be helped; to minister, not to be ministered unto.

One night I decided to spend some time building a happier and closer relationship with my daughter. For several weeks she had been 1me to play chess(棋) with her, so I suggested a game and she eagerly accepted. It was a school night, however, and at nine o’clock my daughter asked if I could hurry my moves, because she 2to go to bed; she had to get up at six in the morning. I 3 she had strict sleeping habits, 4 I thought she ought to be able to5some of this strictness. I said to her, “ 6, you can stay up late for once. We’re having 7.” We played on for another fifteen minutes, during which time she looked8. Finally she said, “Please, Daddy, do it quickly.” “No,” I replied. “If you’re going to play it9, you’re going to play it slowly.” And so we10for another ten minutes, until suddenly my daughter burst into tears, and admitted that she was beaten.
Clearly I had made11. I had started the evening wanting to have a12time with my daughter but had allowed my desire to win to become more 13 than my relationship with my daughter. When I was a child, my desire to win14me well. As a parent, I 15 that it got in my way. So I had to change.

I was an introvert(内向的人) by 1. For as long as I remember, putting on a sincere smile when meeting someone had2been easy. The key to a sincere smile,3, is simple. It’s to be 4. But that’s the source of the problem. When meeting people, 5being excited, I often felt upset.
But we all know 6are important. The more friends you have, the more opportunities you get, 7it’s job opportunities, a romantic relationship, or business partners. So a smile is important to make others feel 8. Mother Teresa said, “Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a(an) 9to that person, a beautiful thing.”
The smile I’m now talking about is not to make a face to cashiers or waiters. I’m talking about those 10smiles you make when meeting old friends. So I’ve discovered a 11. And I call this technique “Oh, it’s Jamie!” When I meet someone, I imagine an old friend of mine called Jamie who was my first friend when we were 12kids. It’s 13why my smile is as wide as I can possibly make. And it’s not just the smile, but my tone and attitude that turn warm as well.
And the best part, whenever you’re friendly to others, they turn friendly 14. You’re not hearing this from me. Some research done by scientists actually 15this claim. So do remember to give it a try.
Three years ago at the age of 23, I took a long hard look at my life and decided that I was 16. 17of my life, I set about 18dramatic changes and now I have become a popular writer. My 19reflects that nothing is too difficult if you 20bravely.
