At the age of 13,I visited a doctor with my parents. As I sat in the examining chair, the doctor looked into my

My father

a gene which,in most cases, results in blindness. I’d inherited the gene. He gradually
4
his eyesight and so did I. At last we were both
5
blind—he was fifty-seven years old,
6
I was only twenty-eight.
My world
7
as the darkness fell,
8
the dreams my husband and I had for us and for our three little boys. But
9
I tried to find some hope and
10
,my eyes were opened to a new realization.
My father had
11
me not just failing eyesight, but an example of
12
in the face of hardships as well. We were all living in Bolivia in 1964 when he decided to
13
the family to America. He worked tirelessly to
14
the right of living in the US.
Alone in the States,he

his helplessness and lack of fluency in English. He managed to rent a small apartment, and nine months later, sent airline tickets for my mom,my brother and me.
Decades later,
16
an American citizen,I look back at what he'd shown me. He set an example proving that determination is important to success. His
17
taught me valuable lessons for my own path in the darkness.
I did the same as I stepped into a
18
world. I fulfilled (完成) my own
19
as a wife, mom,Sunday school teacher and Spanish interpreter. What I inherited from my father helped me to
20
my life in a whole new light.

I had the privilege to visit the Bridge of Forgiveness in Palawan during the time when I was on the summer’s team.
After the long and exciting week,we had a chance to
1
the place where we were assigned(指定).We
2
the narrow hanging bridge made of two bamboos and a long rope which you can hold
3
for your life as you cross it. I was so afraid of
4
, especially here ,and I think most of us were not
5
to crossing so high a bridge
6
,our team leader told us that we must cross this bridge in order to see the splendid falls that lie out on the other
7
.
“As you cross this bridge, think about
8
difficult,but it is possible”.
Many times in our lives we face
9
that we don’t expect---broken relationships, betrayal(背叛)of a friend, etc.,and all we can do is
10
. But I noticed that life must go on, and all the burdens must be
11
through forgiveness---forgiveness of yourself and others.
I didn’t understand my cousin
12
she told me I should
13
all those unfriendly guys with
14
. But as I grow older,I realize that lying in the past
15
and guilt will not serve me well.
Once I forgave serious
16
,I noticed that I couldn’t forget them but every time I remembered them, I
17
. There aer no more pains brought just by the thought of them.
After all,life is good
18
all the hardships pains and difficulties, life teaches me to be
19
in facing and adversity(逆境)while at the same time it makes me
20
to those who suffer, If somebody does something terrible to me,I have to think back the bridge of forgiveness---difficult but possible.

Good advice is like medicine for the soul. What kind of
1
have you recently received? Who do you go to get advice? Do you have a mentor(顾问)? A mentor is a
2
adviser.
Parents, teachers and friends are often great
3
. Sports figures, public officials, and nationally known figures can also be good
4
of mentors, but a person with whom you have a personal relationship will most likely be able to
5
you the best advice.
Mentors teach things that seem to be
6
sense. Proverbs are wise old sayings that are common in every language and
7
, and can sometimes be
8
for a non-native to understand. For example, all
9
glitters(闪烁)is not gold(some things are not as
10
as they appear ).
Advice columns(栏目)
11
newspapers and magazines are another way to
12
advice.
Talk shows on radio and television are also very popular. Americans and Canadians love to
13
themselves. Many people are not
14
to ask for help or
15
about a problem in order to receive advice. People generally will
16
their own experience to
17
their friends. Overcoming a difficult situation is
18
respected in North America. People love to offer motivational (激发性的)
19
and encouragement. One proverb, a friend in need is a friend indeed, shares the concept that a true friend will help you out when you are in

I met Mrs. Neidl in the ninth grade on a stage-design team for a play and she was one of the directors. Almost instantly I loved her. She had an Unpleasant voice and a direct way of speaking,
1
she was encouraging and inspiring. For some reason, she was impressed with my work and me.
Mrs. Neidl would ask me for my
2
. She wanted to know how I thought we should
3
things. At first I had no idea how to answer because I knew
4
about stage design! But I slowly began to respond to her
5
. It was cause and effect: She believed I had opinions, so I began to
6
them. She trusted me to complete things, so I completed them perfectly. She loved how
7
I was, so I began to show up to paint more and more. She believed in me, so I began to believe in myself.
Mrs. Neidl's
8
that year was, "Try it. We can always paint over it
9
!" I began to take
10
. I had been so afraid of failing but suddenly there was no failing --- only things to be
11
upon. I learned to dip my brush into the paint and
12
create something.
The shy, quiet freshman achieved success that year. I was
13
in the program as "Student Art Assistant" because of the time and effort I'd put in. It was that year that I
14
I wanted to spend the rest of my life doing stage design.
Being on that stage-design team
15
Mrs. Neidl changed me completely. Not only was I stronger and more competent than I had thought, but I also
16
a strong interest and a world I hadn't known existed. She taught me not to
17
what people think I should do: She taught me to take chances and not be
18
. Mrs. Neidl was my comforter when I was upset. Her
19
in me has inspired me to do things that I never imagined

How to get rid of waste is a great problem for the world today. Waste must be treated
1
it does not become a danger to life.
2
, in some countries, waste from factories is still poured straight into rivers. People who use the water from one of these rivers often get
3
. The water may become so polluted that it
4
all the fish in the river. When these rivers finally reaches the
5
, it pollutes the ocean.
In many countries with
6
, human waste is piped directly into the sea without being dealt with. This is not
7
. Although the sea itself can break up the waste, beaches
8
become polluted.
9
scientists suggest people take the waste far out to sea in ships where the wind and waves break it down.
In 1989 an international law was passed to
10
people putting waste into the sea. It is now against the
11
to put anything into the sea nearby. Such rubbish as plastics may not be thrown
12
the sea anywhere. Other waste may be put into the sea, either 19 or more than 40 kilometers from land,
13
the nature of the materials.
The
14
of dealing with waste has become so great that several international organizations have been
15
to protect the world and control pollution.

Alice, my friend’s daughter, goes to an expensiveprivate school where she has a friend, Jane, who is on a full scholarship at this school.Jane has
1
economic resources—her father has been dead for years and her mother works
2
a maid.Although her mother works very hard, she can
3
support the family.Jane is very bright and gifted at
4
and that’s how she has got the scholarship, which included a(n)
5
for things like lunch, school uniform and music lessons.
Alice became friends with Jane and would
6
talk to her at lunch. She did it that way in order to avoid the other kids
7
her.
On her birthday last month, she
8
her new friend to her birthday party, but Jane said she couldn’t come.Alice wanted her to be
9
so much that she
10
on her coming.Eventually, the girl said, “I don’t have any
11
clothes that I could wear atyour birthday party.”After a brief pause, the girl remembered, “I have a
12
from my piano performance,” and asked, “Could I
13
a skirt from you?”
Alice was happy that her friend would be
14
to come and hurried home to ask her Mum
15
she could lend her friend one of her skirts. To her surprise, her Mum said, “No.”The daughter was very
16
and angrily said to her Mum, “
17
I could, I would give my friend all my clothes.” The Mother didn’t understand why her daughter should have had such an outburstas she’s normally very well
18
.
Finally, Alice explained to her Mother her friend’s
19
.Her Mother immediately changed her mind and said, “Yes.”She also encouraged her daughter not to feel like she should secretly be friends with Janebut to feelproud of her
20
with her.
So the true friendship seeks to give, not to take; to help, not to be helped; to minister, not to be ministered unto.

One night I decided to spend some time building a happier and closer relationship with my daughter. For several weeks she had been
1
me to play chess(棋) with her, so I suggested a game and she eagerly accepted. It was a school night, however, and at nine o’clock my daughter asked if I could hurry my moves, because she
2
to go to bed; she had to get up at six in the morning. I
3
she had strict sleeping habits,
4
I thought she ought to be able to

some of this strictness. I said to her, “

, you can stay up late for once. We’re having

.” We played on for another fifteen minutes, during which time she looked
8
. Finally she said, “Please, Daddy, do it quickly.” “No,” I replied. “If you’re going to play it
9
, you’re going to play it slowly.” And so we
10
for another ten minutes, until suddenly my daughter burst into tears, and admitted that she was beaten.
Clearly I had made
11
. I had started the evening wanting to have a
12
time with my daughter but had allowed my desire to win to become more
13
than my relationship with my daughter. When I was a child, my desire to win
14
me well. As a parent, I
15
that it got in my way. So I had to change.
