On January 6, Tom Porter and his wife heard a loud crash (碰撞声) and immediately rushed to the aid of a 27-year-old man who had run over a pig and crashed into a tree as a result. Following the crash, the truck was on fire, with the driver's one-year-old baby in the back seat.

The driver, Carl Lucius, injured his back and broke his leg. The child was caught in her car seat.

Porter explained, "We were sitting out and heard a loud crash and knew there was an accident on this road, so we came down here."

As Porter and his wife appeared on the scene, the fire grew ever larger. According to Porter, "The neighbors, said there was a baby still in the truck, so I jumped in the back of it."

Porter managed to enter tile truck and cut the straps (带子) of the child' s car seat with his knife, freeing the child and finally saving her life. "The baby was in the car seat," said Porter. "And, it' s the same car seat my granddaughter had. But I couldn' t get it undone (解开). Before we left,I threw my knife in my pocket. I cut the straps and pulled the baby out.  I jumped out of the truck and the next thing that happened was the whole truck was in a blaze."

Pointing to a number of other heroes who helped to save the baby, Porter explained, "Luckily, Junior and another neighbor were there, and when I pulled the baby out through the back window, they grabbed the baby, and just a couple of seconds later, the truck was burning pretty good.”

The baby was rushed to Memorial Hermann--Texas Medical Center, where she was treated for slight injuries.

When I was in junior high school, what my friends thought of me was real important to me. During those, years, I grew much taller than most of my classmates. I didn't want to be laughed at for my unusual height, so I went along with the crowd who would play jokes on other kids at school. Of course, the jokes were directed at others and not at me.

Once my friends and I put IcyHot (止痛贴) in the shorts of one of the kids on the basketball team. Not only was he terribly embarrassed, but he also had to go to the school nurse' s office.

I had to question myself whether or not it was important to be the kind of leader and person my father believed I was inside. I knew in my heart that he was right.

Once I focused on being the best that I could be at basketball and became a leader in the game, I took  my responsibility (责任) to set a good example more seriously.
