One Saturday afternoon, a six-year-old girl went for a walk. She crossed a large area of grassland into the woods

she realized that she was lost.
Sitting on a rock and

4
it was getting dark, she saw a small, dark wooden house. She opened the door and

The girl’s parents were out and her dog, Laddy, was at home. Laddy

a window, breaking the glass. He looked in the fields. But he couldn’t find his mistress anywhere. However, from the ground came a

scent (气味) as he lowered his head. He
11
the scent and walked across the grassland. Barking
12
into the air, the dog

her dog standing beside her, the girl said, “you

When my father died, one of the tasks that fell to me was to sort through and decide which objects to save and which to throw away. Now I look at the
1
of my life as if I were dead,
2
what my children will do with the human skull(骷髅) that
3
on the bookcase next to my desk. I couldn’t
4
them if they threw it out. They’ve been wanting to do that for some years,
5
will they know how much can be learned from
6
with a skull? And what about my books?
7
they can find some place in their
8
for ten thousand books. However, I know they will look at the white, plastic head of a horse on my desk and
9
it into a Glad trash bag without any
10
, never knowing that it is the only place
11
from the first chess set (棋子)I owned.
How many boxes of mine will my children

? Can I trust my children with my
13
? Every object of our lives is a
14
, and emotion swirls(旋动) around it like fog, hiding and
15
a tiny truth of the heart.
I look at these objects that are mine and know, too, that they are
16
of how alone I am, how alone each of us is,
17
no one knows what any object means except he or she who
18
it. I have the memory of taking it home
19
one of my newly-born children from the hospital; only I have the memory of what it looked like when I lived in that apartment and where it sat in that house. I look at the objects that are mine, and the memories are
20
and permeated(渗透着)with love. I look at the objects that are mine and know that I’m going to miss me very much.

I will never forget the year I was about twelve years old. My mother told us that we would not be
1
Christmas gifts because there was not enough money. I felt sad and thought, "What would I say when the other kids asked what I’d
2
?" Just when I started to
3
that there would not be a Christmas that year, three women
4
at our house with gifts for all of us. For me they brought a doll. I felt such a sense of
5
that I would no longer have to be embarrassed when I returned to school. I wasn’t
6
. Somebody had thought
7
of me to bring me a gift.
Years later, when I stood in the kitchen of my new house, thinking how I wanted to make my
8
Christmas there special and memorable, I
9
remembered the women’s visit. I decided that I wanted to create that same feeling of
10
for as many children as I could possibly reach.
So I
11
a plan and gathered forty people from my company to help. We gathered about 125 orphans (孤儿) at the Christmas party. For every child, we wrapped colorful packages filled with toys, clothes, and school supplies,
12
with a child’s name. We wanted all of them to know they were
13
. Before I called out their names and handed them their gifts, I
14
them that they couldn’t open their presents
15
every child had come forward. Finally the
16
they had been waiting for came as I called out, "One, two, three. Open your presents!" As the children opened their packages, their faces beamed and their bright smiles
17
up the room. The
18
in the room was obvious, and
19
wasn’’t just about toys. It was a feeling — the feeling I knew
20
that Christmas so long ago when the women came to visit. I wasn’t forgotten. Somebody thought of me. I matter.

Thanksgiving Day was near. The first grade teacher gave her class a fun assignment-to draw a picture of something for which they were
1
.
Most of the class might be considered economically
2
,but still many would celebrate the holiday with turkey and other traditional goodies of the season. These, the teacher thought, would be the
3
of most of her students’ art. And they were.
But Douglas made a different kind of
4
.Douglas was a different kind of boy. He was the teacher’s true child of misery, weak and
5
.As other children played at break,Douglas was likely to stand close by her side. One could only guess at the
6
Douglas felt behind those sad eyes.
Yes,his picture was
7
.When asked to draw a picture of something for which he was thankful,he drew a hand. Nothing else. Just an
8
hand.
His abstract image
9
the imagination of his peers. Whose hand could it be? One child guessed it was the hand of a farmer, because farmers
10
turkeys. Another suggested a police officer, because the police protect and
11
people. Still others guessed it was the hand of God,for God feeds us. And so the
12
went-until the teacher almost forgot the young artist himself.
When the children had gone on to other assignments, she
13
at Douglas’desk, bent down, and asked him whose hand it was. The little boy looked away and
14
,“It’s yours,teacher.” She
15
the times she had taken his hand and walked with him here or there,
16
she had the other students. How often had she said,“Take my hand,Douglas,we’11 go outside.” Or,“Let me show you how to
17
your pencil.”Or,“Let’s do this together.” Douglas was most thankful for his teacher’s hand.
Brushing aside a tear, she went on with her work.
The story speaks of
18
thankfulness. It says something about teachers teaching and parents parenting and friends showing
19
,and how much it means to the Douglases of the world. They might not always say thanks, but they’11 remember the hand that

I'm glad you showed great interest in what is happening in China. You are right. I am very
1
of the great achievement that the Long March-2F carrier rocket successfully sent China's manned Shenzhou-9 spacecraft into space on June 16, 2012. Now, China is the third country in the world to use its own

I agree with you that if we work together and
3
, the future will be ours, the two old civilizations will rejuvenate(焕发青春). The last thirty years has
4
great changes that have taken place in both India and China. We are lucky we are living in this great period.
You wanted to know more about Xi’an. Let me tell you: Xi’an is the biggest city in the
5
of China, with a population of over 9 million. Xi'an
6
the capital of China for over 13 dynasties. It was perhaps the most
7
and culturally advanced city in the entire world.
8
this place silk roads went westwards through Asia to Europe and Africa. Along one of the silk roads, over 1300 years ago, a great thinker called XuanZang
9
all the way from Xi'an to India with the
10
of getting true spirit of Buddha(佛). He succeeded after many
11
difficulties. After that, some new ideas from India spread over China, Japan and Korea. A 65-meter-high
12
called Dayan Pagoda was built for him for what he had done for the nation after he died, which
13
stands in the south of Xi'an, the most famous
14
of the city.
Xi'an is a city with splendid
15
. A lot of historical interests attract millions of visitors from both China and all over the world,
16
which the Terra Cotta Warriors and the Old City Walls are the most well-known, whose details you can
17
find through the Internet.
Today's Xi'an is modern and even more beautiful,
18
to film-makers, IT experts, and business people of every description. Here in this city, famous for calligraphy(书法), a new chapter in China's history is being
19
I think you may have some idea of where I'm living. If you want to know more, come to China, I'11 be your

Filled with sorrow, I didn’t notice the hardness of the chair I was sitting on. I was at the funeral(葬礼)of my

. The hurt was so intense(强烈的), and I found it hard to

Suddenly, I heard a

open and slam shut at the back of the church. Quick

hurried along the floor. A young man looked around in a

and then sat next to me. His eyes were full of tears.
“I’m

. After several eulogies (悼文), he leaned over and commented, “Why do they keep

Mary by the name of ‘Margaret’?” “Because that was her name, Margaret. Never Mary,” I

. “No, that isn’t correct,” he insisted. “Her name is Mary, Mary Peters.” “That isn’t
10
this is,” I replied. “Isn’t this the Lutheran church?” “No, the Lutheran church is across the street. I believe you’re at the

funeral, sir.”
The solemnness (庄严) of the occasion

with the realization of the man’s mistake bubbled (充溢) up inside me and came out as
13
. I peeked at the misguided man seated beside me. He was laughing,
14
. I imagined Mother laughing. At the

“Aman”, we darted(猛冲) out a door and into the parking lot.
“I do believe we’11 be the
16
of the town,” he smiled. He said his name was Rick and that

he had missed his aunt’s funeral, he asked me out for a cup of coffee. That afternoon began a lifelong

for me with this man who attended the wrong funeral. A year after our meeting, we were

at a country church. This time we both arrived at the same church, right on time.

When I entered Berkeley, I hoped to earn a scholarship. Having been a Straight-A student(优等生), I believed I could
1
tough(=hard) subjects and really learn something. One such course was World Literature given by Professor Jayne. I was extremely interested in the ideas he
2
in class.
When I took the first exam, I was
3
to find a 77, C-plus, on my test paper,
4
English was my best subject. I went to reason with Professor Jayne, who listened to my arguments but remained
5
.
I decided to try harder, although I didn't know what that
6
because school had always been easy for me. I read the books more carefully, but got another 77. Again, I
7
with Professor Jayne. Again, he listened patiently but wouldn't change his
8
.
One more test before the final exam. One more
9
to improve my grade. So I redoubled my efforts(加倍努力) and, for the first time,
10
the meaning of the word "thorough"(彻底的).But my
11
did no good and everything
12
as before.
The last hurdle(障碍)was the final. No matter what
13
I got, it wouldn't cancel three C-pluses. I might as well kiss the
14
goodbye.
I stopped working hard. I felt I knew the course material as well as I ever would. The night before the final, I even
15
myself to a movie. The next day I decided for once I'd have
16
with a test.
A week later, I was surprised to find I got an A. I hurried into Professor Jayne's office. He
17
to be expecting me. "If I gave you the As you
18
, you wouldn't continue to work as hard."
I stared at him,
19
that his analysis and strategy(策略)were correct. I had worked my head
20
, as I had never done before.
I was speechless when my course grade arrived: A-plus. It was the only A-plus given. The next year I received my scholarship. I've always remembered Professor Jayne's lesson: you alone must set your own standard of excellence.

My parents ran a small restaurant in Seattle. It was open twenty-four hours a day, six days a week. And my first real job, when I was six years old, was
1
the diners’ shoes. My father had done it when he was young, so he taught me
2
to do it well, telling me to
3
to shine the shoes again if the customer wasn’t
4
.
I was proud of working in the restaurant
5
I was also working for the good of the family. But my father
6
said that I had to meet certain standards(标准) to be part of the team. I
7
to be on time, hard-working, and polite to the
8
. I was
9
paid for the work I did at the restaurant. One day I made the mistake of suggesting to Dad that he
10
give me $10 a week. He said, “OK. How about you paying me for three meals a day you have here? And for the times you bring in your friends
11
free soft drinks?” He
12
the amount of money I owed him, about $40 a week.
I remember returning to Seattle after being
13
in the US Army for about two years. I had just been promoted(升职) to Captain at that time. And full of pride, I walked into my parents’ restaurant, but the
14
thing Dad said was, “How about your
15
up tonight?” I couldn’t
16
my ears! I am an officer in the Army! But
17
didn’t matter. As far as Dad was concerned, I was just
18
member of the team. I reached for the mop(拖把).Working for Dad has taught me that the devotion(奉献) to a
19
is above all. It has nothing to do with
20
that team is for a family restaurant or the US Army.

as he was, the young guy had to, not really sure why. In a

voice, the middle-aged man said, “I wear this ribbon to bring

.”
“Oh, sorry. She died of breast canner?”
“No, she didn’t. She’s alive and

. But her breasts nourished me as a baby, and were a soft
