“Three Apples” changed the world. The first one seduced (引诱) Eve. The second one awakened Newton.     81     Here are some famous words from Steve Jobs to share.

On Character

I’m the only person I know that’s lost a quarter of a billion dollars in one year.     82

On good design

That’s been one of my mottoes — focus and simplicity. Simple can be harder than complex  — You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it’s worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains.

On his outlook

83    Going to bed at night saying we’ve done something wonderful, that’s what matters to me.

On your working life

Your work is to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work.     84     If you haven’t found it, keep looking. Don’t settle.

On the importance of death

No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there.     85        No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because death is very likely the single best invention of life. It is life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away.

A.      It’s very character-building.

B.      The third one was in the hands of Steve Jobs.

C.      This is not a one-man show.

D.     And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.

E.      And yet death is the destination we all share.

F.      It’s really hard to design products by focusing on groups.

G.     Being the richest man in the cemetery (墓地) doesn’t matter to me.

Many people think that listening is a passive business. It is just the opposite. Listening well is an active exercise of our attention and hard work. It is because they do not realize this, or because they are not willing to do the work, that most people do not listen well.

Listening well also requires total concentration upon someone else. An essential part of listening well is the rule known as ‘bracketing’. Bracketing includes the temporary giving up or setting aside of your own prejudices and desires, to experience as far as possible someone else’s world from the inside, stepping into his or her shoes. Moreover, since listening well involves bracketing, it also involves a temporary acceptance of the other person. Sensing this acceptance, the speaker will seem quite willing to open up the inner part of his or her mind to the listener. True communication is under way and the energy required for listening well is so great that it can be accomplished only by the will to extend oneself for mutual growth.

Most of the time we lack this energy. Even though we may feel in our business dealings or social relationships that we are listening well, what we are usually doing is listening selectively. Often we have a prepared list in mind and wonder, as we listen, how we can achieve certain desired results to get the conversation over as quickly as possible or redirected in ways more satisfactory to us. Many of us are far more interested in talking than in listening, or we simply refuse to listen to what we don’t want to hear.

It wasn’t until toward the end of my doctor career that I have found the knowledge that one is being truly listened to is frequently therapeutic (有疗效的). In about a quarter of the patients I saw, surprising improvement was shown during the first few months of psychotherapy(心理疗法), before any of the roots of problems had been uncovered or explained. There are several reasons for this phenomenon, but chief among them, I believe, was the patient’s sense he or she was being truly listened to, often for the first time in years, and for some, perhaps for the first time ever.

 A. preparing a topic list first                         B. focusing on one’s own mind

 C. directing the talk to the desired results       D. experiencing the speaker’s inside world

77. What is mainly discussed in Paragraph 2 ?

 A. How to listen well.                                  B. What to listen to.

 C. Benefits of listening.                                D. Problems in listening.

78. According to the author, in communication people tend to ________.

 A. listen actively                                          B. listen purposefully

 C. set aside their prejudices                          D. open up their inner mind

79. According to the author, the patients improved mainly because ________.

 A. they were taken good care of.                  B. they knew they were truly listened to.

 C. they had partners to talk to.                      D. they knew the roots of problems.

80. What type of writing is the article likely to be ?

 A. Science fiction.         B. A news report.     C. A medical report.      D. Popular science.

While Jennifer was at house taking an online exam for her business law class, a monitor(监控器)a few hundred miles away was watching her every move.

Using a web camera equipped in Jennifer’s Los Angeles apartment, the monitor in Phoenix tracked how frequently her eyes moved from the computer screen and listened for the secret sounds of a possible helper in the room. Her Internet access was locked remotely to prevent Internet searches, and her typing style was analyzed to make sure she was who she said she was: Did she enter her student number at the same speed as she had in the past? Or was she slowing down?

In the battle against cheating, this is the cutting edge and a key to encourage honesty in the booming field of online education. The technology gives trust to the entire system, to the institution and to online education in general. Only with solid measures against cheating, experts say, can Internet universities show that their exams and diplomas are valid — that students haven’t just searched the Internet to get the right answers.

Although online classes have existed for more than a decade, the concern over cheating has become sharper in the last year with the growth of "open online courses." Private colleges, public universities and corporations are jumping into the online education field spending millions of dollars to attract potential students, while also taking steps to help guarantee honesty at a distance.

Aside from the web cameras, a number of other high-tech methods are becoming increasingly popular. Among them are programs that check students’ identities using personal information, such as the telephone number they once used.

Other programs can produce unique exams by drawing on a large list of questions and can recognize possible cheaters by analyzing whether difficult test questions are answered at the same speed as easy ones. As in many university classes, term papers are scanned against some large Internet data banks for cheating.

71. Why was Jennifer watched in an online exam?

 A. To correct her typing mistakes.                      B. To find her secrets in the room.

 C. To prevent her from slowing down.               D. To keep her from dishonest behaviors.

 A. they can attract potential students                   B. they can defeat academic cheating

 C. they offer students online help                       D. they offer many online courses

74. Some programs can find out possible cheaters by __________.

 A. checking the question answering speed           B. producing a large number of questions

 C. scanning the Internet test questions                D. giving difficult test questions

75. Which of the following is the best title of this passage?

 A. The Advantages of Online Exams

In my living room, there is a plaque (匾) that advises me to “Bloom (开花) where you are planted.” It reminds me of Dorothy. I got to know Dorothy in the early 1980s, when I was teaching Early Childhood Development through a program with Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky. The job responsibilities required occasional visits to the classroom of each teacher in the program. Dorothy stands out in my memory as one who “bloomed” in her remote area.

Dorothy taught in a school in Harlan County, Kentucky, Appalachian Mountain area. To get to her school from the town of Harlan, I followed a road winding around the mountain. In the eight-mile journey, I crossed the same railroad track five times, giving the possibility of getting caught by the same train five times. Rather than feeling excited by this drive through the mountains, I found it depressing. The poverty level was shocking and the small shabby houses gave me the greatest feeling of hopelessness.

From the moment of my arrival at the little school, all gloom (忧郁) disappeared. Upon arriving at Dorothy’s classroom. I was greeted with smiling faces and treated like a queen. The children had been prepared to show me their latest projects. Dorothy told me with a big smile that they were serving poke greens salad and cornbread for “dinner” (lunch). In case you don’t know, poke greens are a weed-type plant that grows wild, especially on poor ground.

Dorothy never ran out of reports of exciting activities of her students. Her enthusiasm never cooled down. When the time came to sit for the testing and interviewing required to receive her Child Development Associate Certification, Dorothy was ready. She came to the assessment and passed in all areas. Afterwards, she invited me to the one-and-only steak house in the area to celebrate her victory, as if she had received her Ph. D. degree. After the meal, she placed a little box containing an old pen in my hand. She said it was a family heirloom (传家宝), but to me it is a treasured symbol of appreciation and pride that cannot be matched with things.

66. “Early Childhood Development” in Paragraph 1 refers to __________.

    A. the long track                                       B. the poor houses

    C. the same train                                       D. the winding road

68. Upon arriving at the classroom, the author was cheered up by _________.

    A. a warm welcome                                         B. the sight of poke greens

    C. Dorothy’s latest projects                        D. a big dinner made for her

69. What can we know about Dorothy from the last paragraph?

    A. She was invited to a celebration at a restaurant. B. She got a pen as a gift from the author.

    C. She passed the required assessment.                     D. She received her Ph. D. degree.
 70. What does the author mainly intend to tell us?

    A. Whatever you do, you must do it carefully.

    B. Whoever you are, you deserve equal treatment.

    C. However poor you are, you have the right to education,

 D. Wherever you are, you can accomplish your achievement.

A Leap(跳跃)to Honor

Leaping on a narrow balance beam (平衡木) is not easy. But Lola Walter, a 13-year-old gymnast, is an expert at it.

To perfect her skills, Lola   41   for four hours a day, five days a week. At the state championships in March, she finished seventh out of 16 girls.

That’s especially impressive,   42   she is legally blind, born with a rare condition that causes her eyes to shift constantly. She often sees double and can’t   43   how far away things are.

When she was little, her mom   44   that even though she couldn’t see   45  , she was fearless. So her mom signed her up for gymnastics when she was three. She loved the   46   right away and gymnastics became her favorite.

Though learning gymnastics has been more   47  for her than for some of her tournaments, she has never quit. She doesn’t let her   48   stop her from doing anything that she wants to.
She likes the determination it takes to do the sport. Her biggest   49   is the balance beam. Because she has double vision, she often sees two beams. She must use her sense of touch to help her during her routine. Sometimes she even closes her eyes. “You have to   50   your mind that it’ll take you where you want to go.” says Lola.

To be a top-level gymnast, one must be brave. The beam is probably the most   51   for anyone because it’s four inches wide. At the state competition, Lola didn’t fall   52   the beam. In fact, she got an 8.1 out of 10---- her highest score yet.

Lola doesn’t want to be   53   differently from the other girls on her team. At the competitions, the judges don’t know about her vision   54  . She doesn’t tell them, because she doesn’t think they need to know. Her mom is amazed by her   55   attitude.

Lola never thinks about   56  . She is presently at Level 7 while the highest is Level 10 in gymnastics. Her   57   is to reach Level 9. She says she wants to be a gymnastics coach to pass down what she’s learned to other kids   58   she grew up.

Lola is   59   of all her hard work and success. She says it’s helped her overcome problems in her life outside gymnastics, too. Her   60   for others is “just believe yourself”.
