Mr. Harris used to work in Dover, but then he changed his work, and he and his wife moved to another town. They did not have many friends there, but they soon met a lot of interesting people, and after a few weeks, they often went to dinner or to parties at other people's houses.

Then Mrs. Harris said to her husband, "We've been to a lot of other people's houses, and now we must invite them to our house, mustn't we?"

"Yes, certainly," answered her husband, "A big party will be the easiest thing, won't it? Then we can start to invite people to dinner in small numbers next month."

So Mrs. Harris said, "Yes, I'll invite all our friends here to a big party on 5th December."

"How many will that be?" Mr. Harris asked. "Don't invite too many."

Mrs. Harris was beginning to write the invitations when her husband saw that she was writing, "Party: 6:30 to 8:30 p.m."

"That isn't very nice, is it?" he said. "You're telling our guests that they must go at 8:30." So Mrs. Harris just wrote "Party: 6:30 p.m."

A lot of guests came, and they all had a good time, so they did not go home at 8:30. In fact they were still there at mid-night when the door bell rang and a policeman arrived. He said, "You must stop making a noise, because someone has complained(抱怨)."

Mr. Harris said he did not want to quarrel with the policeman, so everyone went home. They were sorry to have to go.

When Mr. and Mrs. Harris were alone again, she said to him. "That was a surprise, wasn't it? Who complained about the noise?"

"I did," Mr. Harris answered in a tired voice.

Mrs. Jones was very fond of singing. She had a good   26   , except that some of her high notes tended to sound like a gate, which someone had forgotten to   27   . Mrs. Jones was very conscious of this   28 _, and took every   29   she could find to practice these high   30  . As she lived in a small house where she could not practice without   31    the rest of the family, she usually went for long walks along the country roads whenever she had time, and practiced her high notes there. Every time she heard a   32   or a person coming along the   33  , she stopped and   34    until she could no longer be heard before she started practicing again, because she was a   35   person, and because she was sensitive about those high notes.

One afternoon, however, a fast, open car came up behind her so   36   and so fast that she did not hear it until it was only a few yards from her. She was singing some of her highest and most   37   notes at the time, and as the car passed her, she saw an anxious   38    suddenly come over its driver’s face. He put his brakes on violently, and as soon as the car stopped, jumped out and began to   39   all his tires carefully.

Mrs. Jones did not dare to tell him what the noise he had heard had really been, so he got back into his car and drove off as   40   as he had been when he stopped.

My students often tell me that they do not have “enough time” to do all their schoolwork.

My reply is often a brief “You have as much time as the president.” I usually carry on a bit about there being twenty-four hours in the day for everyone, and suggest that “not enough time ”is not an acceptable explanation of not getting sth done.

Once in graduate school, I tried to justify(证明)myself to one of my professors by saying that I was working hard. His answer to me was, “That’s irrelevant(无关紧要的).What’s important is the quality of your work..” Since then I have had time to reflect on the “hard worker” dodge(诀窍),and I have come to some conclusions-----all relevant to the issue of how much time we have.

If you look at the matter analytically, you can identify two parts of the problem: There is, of course, the matter of “time”, which we can think of as fixed. Then there is the issue of “work” during that time, which can vary in intensity(强度).But, as my professor suggested, it’s not the diligence of the work but the quality of the product that’s important.

That led me to a new idea: the quality of the work. That concept is perhaps best explained by a sign I once saw on the wall in someone’s office: “Don’t work harder, Work smarter.” There’s a lot of sense in that idea.

If you can’t get more time, and few of us can, the only solution is to improve the quality of the work. That means devising(想出)ways of getting more out of the same time than we might otherwise get. That should lead us to an analysis of our work habits. Since “work” for students usually means “homework”, the expression “work habits” should be read as “study habits”.

Then, as a smart student, you will seek to improve those skills that you use in study, chiefly reading an writing .If you learn to read better and write better, there are big benefits that pay off across the board in all your studies.

Small discoveries in Indonesia are causing a stir in the science world. Researchers have excavated tiny bones that they believe belong to an entirely new human species. If that’s true, it will change how we think about our ancestors.

Clues that the little people may have lived long ago were first issued last year in the scientific journal Nature. Scientists said that they had found the bones of a three-foot-tall female on the island of Flores in Indonesia. When they looked more closely, they saw that the nearly complete skeleton(骨架)belonged to a full-grown adult. Researchers named her Hobbit after the tiny heroes of the Lord of the Rings books.

Now the team is saying it has excavated even more pieces of the puzzle, including a jawbone and parts of arms, legs and hands from several individuals, as well as stone tools. They reported their find in Nature this month. “The new evidence makes it very clear that these people are a new species, distinct from modern humans.” Peter Brown, a scientist on the team, said. They named these ancient humans Homo floresiensis.

Brown says that these little people lived as recently as 12,000 years ago. If Homo floresiensis was a different species from modern humans, that would make our family tree bigger than we knew, It means, says Brown, that “until recently a relative shared the planet with us.”

Many scientists think a new species is unlikely. Some argue that the bones must have belonged to modern humans whose small size was the result of a genetic problem.

Daniel E. Lieberman, a scientist at Harvard University, thinks that the debate over the discovery is healthy. He believes that the questions and arguments raised by critics will help us learn more about these unusual skeletons. “Disagreement is an important part of the scientific process,” Lieberman said, “As far as I’m concerned, the story’s only just begun.”

Phone producers show us every year some really superb concept phones and even if 99% of those phones never see the production line, they give us a small glimpse(一瞥)of what the phones will look like in the near future.

We’ve made a list of what we think are the coolest concept phones presented in 2010. But don’t ask us where you can get them and what the prices are.

1.LG Flutter Concept Smart-phone

The LG Flutter has a face like the iPhone.

The only difference is that the LG Flutter looks more like a fan or a killer’s tool which we see in sci-fi movies.

In spite of this, this design does seem fit for the future of mobile phones but looks a bit difficult to use.

2.Nokia 888 Communicator

The phone has an amazing design. You can fold it in many ways according to your needs. You can wear it as a bracelet(手镯), roll it, bend it, and wear it as a clip on your clothes.

Nokia 888 Concept is mostly targeted at teenagers that are very active and take part in a lot of different activities.

3.Window Phone

It is a product to throw on the face of the shameless weather officials.

Whenever they predict sunny day be sure it would rain. So we have thought of gifting them this: “Window Phone” that makes accurate predictions and even changes its display(显示)according to the climate condition outdoors.

4.Nokia Morph

The Nokia Morph is created by Finnish company Nokia. The concept was the product of a joint study by the Nokia Research Center and the University of Cambridge’s Nanoscience Center.

The phone could be bent into numerous shapes,so it can be worn around the wrist(手腕)or held up to the face. The transparent(透明的)phone would allow it to be see-through yet functional. It has a self-cleaning surface that can absorb solar energy to recharge the phone battery(电池).

5.Clover Phone

On looks it is just another ordinary phone type, but made in recycled material, which allow the device to be upgraded to meet the latest advancements in technology.

We guess the green aspects on the high-end tech will be a selling point for this phone.

I really love my job because I enjoy working with small children and like the challenges and awards from the job. I also think my work is important. There was a time when I thought I would never have that sort of career.

I wasn’t an excellent student because I didn’t do much schoolwork. In my final term I started thinking what I might do and found I didn’t have much to offer. I just accepted that I wasn’t the type to have a career.

I then found myself a job, looking after two little girls. It wasn’t too bad at first. But the problems began when I agreed to live in, so that I would be there if my boss had to go out for business in the evening. We agreed that if I had to work extra hours one week, she’d give me time off the next. But unfortunately, it didn’t often work out. I was getting extremely tired and fed up, because I had too many late nights and early mornings with the children.

One Sunday, I was in the park with the children, and met Megan who used to go to school with me. I told her about my situation. She suggested that I should do a course and get a qualification if I wanted to work with children. I didn’t think I would be accepted because I didn’t take many exams in school. She persuaded me to phone the local college and they were really helpful. My experience counted for a lot and I got on a part –time course. I had to leave my job with the family, and got work helping out at a kindergarten.

Now I’ve got a full-time job there. I shall always be thankful to Megan. I wish I had known earlier that you could have a career, even if you aren’t top of the class at school.
