I went to the Chinatown market in London last Sunday. The first thing I did was to go to one of the Chinese green grocers’ shops. As soon as I entered the shop, I smelt mixtures of Chinese spices and saw the new season’s fruits. My son wanted a bag of sweets, so we popped into the shop next door which sells many kinds of candy.

There’s a lot of noise in the Chinatown market and you will see many tourists too. There are a lot of cars and trucks that never stop beeping. While people are loading and unloading their goods, most of them have their cars and trucks parked in the middle of the road. This causes great inconvenience for other drivers. Can you imagine that?

After we had done all our shopping, my son and I went to a restaurant for lunch. We enjoyed our meal very much. But the shopping made us both very tired at the end. We headed down the road to catch our bus home. My son and I enjoyed riding in the bus. We also enjoyed looking at different buildings and people walking by dressed in fancy outfits. Although Chinatown can be a busy place to shop, I do enjoy going there now and then. I can buy some of my necessities, and I can also look and browse around the other shops and department stores where I can indulge (使沉迷) myself with some nice things. Chinatown is located in the heart of central London where you can find tons of shops and other places to amuse you. And for me, I certainly don’t mind going back there again soon.

People have strange ideas about food. For example, the tomato is a kind of very delicious vegetable. It is one of useful plants that can be prepared in many ways. It has rich nutrition and vitamin in it. But in the 18th century, Americans never ate tomatoes. They grew them in their gardens because tomato plants are so pretty. But they thought the vegetable was poisonous (有毒的). They called tomatoes “poison apples.”

President Thomas Jefferson, however, knew that tomatoes were good to eat. He was a learned man. He had been to Paris, where he learned to love the taste of tomatoes. He grew many kinds of tomatoes in his garden. The President taught his cook a way for a cream of tomato soup. This beautiful pink soup was served at the President’s party. A child who has once been pleased with a tale likes, as a rule, to have it retold in almost the same words, but this should not lead parents to treat printed fairy stories as formal texts. It is always much better to tell a story than read it out of a book, and, if a parent can produce what, in the actual situation of the time and the child, is an improvement on the printed text, so much the better.

A charge made against fairy tales is that they harm the child by frightening him or making him sad thinking. To prove the latter, one would have to show in a controlled experiment that children who have read fairy stories were more often sorry for cruelty than those who had not. As to fears, there are, I think, some cases of children being dangerously terrified by some fairy story. Often, however, this arises(出现) from the child having heard the story once. Familiarity with the story by repetition turns the pain of fear into the pleasure of a fear faced and mastered.

There are also people who object to fairy stories on the grounds that they are not objectively true, that giants, witches, two-headed dragons, magic carpets, etc. do not exist; and that, instead of being fond of the strange side in fairy tales, the child should be taught to learn the reality by studying history. I find such people, I must say so peculiar(奇怪的) that I do not know how to argue with them. If their case were sound, the world should be full of mad men attempting to fly from New York to Philadelphia on a stick or covering a telephone with kisses in the belief that it was their beloved girl-friend.

No fairy story ever declared to be a description of the real world and no clever child has ever believed that it was.

A. repeated without any change                         B. treated as a joke

C. made some changes by the parent                  D. set in the present

32. According to the passage, great fear can take place in a child when the story is _______.

A. in a realistic setting                               B. heard for the first time

C. repeated too often                                  D. told in a different way

33. The advantage claimed(提出) for repeating fairy stories to young children is that it _______.

A. makes them less fearful                                B. develops their power of memory

C. makes them believe there is nothing to be afraid of

D. encourages them not to have strange beliefs

34. The author’s mention of sticks and telephones is meant to suggest that _______.

A. fairy stories are still being made up

B. there is some misunderstanding about fairy tales

C. people try to modernize old fairy stories

D. there is more concern for children's fears nowadays

35. One of the reasons why some people are not in favor of fairy tales is that _______.

A. they are full of imagination

B. they just make up the stories which are far from the truth

C. they are not interesting

D. they make teachers of history difficult to teach

Like all other mothers who have small children, I, too, have to steal time-from my own children at home and from the children who know me as their teacher-just to put a few words down on paper. Many times I've wanted to write for myself, for other women, for my parents, for my husband, and especially for my children. I would have liked to leave a legacy (遗产) of words explaining what it has meant to have twins. One reason that there is not a great deal written about being a mother of a new baby is that there is seldom a moment to think of anything else but the baby's needs.

With twins, I did not have a spare hand to write with.

Before my twins were born, my days were long and I had nothing to write about. After the twins' birth I did have something to write about, but I found myself facing not a pen and paper but milk bottles.

Some nights, friends would visit. They would leave at 11 p.m., heading for bed, and for us the night was only just beginning. With twins, there is really no night. Each feeding lasts a long time. At 1:00 a.m., each of them would begin crying from hunger. At 4:00 am, when I finally put them down, I felt exhausted.

Two years have passed since then and we've managed to live through it all. My days are still very full and even now there isn't one evening when I put the twins down for the night that I don't have a break. At last a little time for myself.

26. When did the writer have time but she didn't feel like writing anything?

A. Before the birth of her twins.                  B. When she faced bottles of milk.

C. After her friends visited her home.          D. When she had to think about the babies' needs.

27. What does the writer mainly write about?

A. Her role as a wife.                                B. Her work as a writer.

C. Her experience as a mother.                   D. Her feeling as a woman.

28. Why did the writer say the night was just beginning (in the 4th paragraph)?

A. Because her friends left her house too late.

B. Because she started to take care of the twins even at night.

C. Because her babies often cried and she woke up.

D. Because she could not sleep till four in the morning.

29. This passage is probably from a(n) ______.

A. blog                 B. newspaper                      C. guidebook                D. advertisement

30. What can we learn from the passage?

A. The writer was unhappy because of no time for writing.

B. The writer cared her babies more than her own interests.

C. The writer hated to be a mother of twins.

D. The writer could steal a little time at night.

Modern inventions have speeded up people's lives amazingly.Motor cars cover a hundred miles in little more than an hour, aircraft cross the world inside a day, while computers operate at lightning speed.Indeed, this love of speed seems never ending.Every year motor cars are produced which go even faster and each new computer boasts(吹嘘)of saving precious seconds in handling tasks.

All this saves time, but at a price. When we lose or gain half a day in speeding across the world in an airplane, our bodies tell us so.We get the uncomfortable feeling known as jet lag; our bodies feel that they have been left behind in another time zone.Again, spending too long at computers results in painful wrists and fingers.Mobile phones also                    ,according to some scientists;too much use may put harmful radiation into our brains,a consequence we do not like to think about.

However, what do we do with the time we have saved? Certainly not relax,or so it seems. We are so accustomed to constant activity that we find it difficult to sit and do nothing or even just one thing at a time.Perhaps the days are long gone when we might listen quietly to a story on the radio, letting imagination take us into another world

There was a time when some people's lives were devoted simply to the cultivation(耕耘)of the land or the care of cattle. No multi tasking there;their lives went on at a much gentler pace, and in a familiar pattern. There is much that we might envy about a way of life like this.Yet before we do so,we must think of the hard tasks our ancestors faced:they farmed with bare hands, often lived close to hunger, and had to make tools from wood and stone. Modern machinery has freed people from that primitive existence.

76.What's the passage mainly about?(within 10 words)

77.List the difficulties our ancestors met according to the text.(within 15 words)

78.Fill in the blank in the 2nd paragraph with proper words or phrases.

79.Why do we make new products more and more time-saving according to Paragraph 1 of this passage?

80.Translate the underlined sentence in the 3rd paragraph into Chinese.

This morning, a Virgin Atantin 747 Jumbo Jet became the first commercial airplane to fly on biofuel. The short flight from London to Amsterdam used a blend of 20% babassu(棕榈) oil mixed with 80% conventional jet fuel.

What was really exciting about the flight was the fact that the engine did not have to be altered in any way for the biofuel to work While this is a great initial step in trying to reduce CO2(carbon-dioxide)emissions(排放)from airplanes. there are a lot of hurdles (障碍)that still need to be overcome.

First and foremost, unlike the normal fuel used to run airplanes (known as Jet A),biofuel freezes at high altitudes. Also, Jet‘A’fuel burns consistently (at the same pace),which means it provides a safe and reliable fuel for long flights--engineers are not sure if biofuel will be able to do the same.

The biggest hurdle to a full biofuel switch is our ability to be able to grow enough crops that can be converted to biofuel. There are two concerns that scientists have in this matter – the first is thatthe land to grow the extra crops will come from clearing more of our forests and the second is that since it competes with what we eat, the price of food will go up.

However, Richard Branson of Virgin Airlines, envisions that if biofuel starts to replace oil on a greater basis, it will be manufactured from algae(藻类)produced in sewage treatment plants, not from food sources.

Birgin Airlines is not the only one trying to look for alternative fuel sources. Earlier this year, an Airbus A380 used another alternative fuel-a man-made mix of gas-to-liquid, in one of its four engines. The flight was tested by Rolls Royce (manufacturer of jet engines), in partnership with Shell (an oil company). Rolls Royce is also working with Air New Zealand on a similar project.

While a complete switch to alternative fuel may take years, it is very encouraging to see airlines, oil companies and airplane manufacturers all coming together to try to make it happen!

71.Why does Virgin Airlines try to replace normal fuel with biofuel?

A.To cut down the flight cost of the company.

B.To remove some hurdles for the biofuel to work.

C.To reduce CO2 emissions from airplanes.

D.To test plane engines on biofuel.

72.Which is NOT true for a full biofuel switch of airplanes?

A Biofuel cannot run for long flights.

B.Biofuel cannot work at high altitudes.

C.Man has not enough land to grow extra crops for biofuel.

D.It’s not easy for sewage treatment plants to manufacture biofuel.

73.One of the hurdles to be overcome for a full biofuel switch is to .

    A.alter the engine for airplanes

B.make biofuel burn consistently

C.open more land to grow more crops

D.develop sewage treatment plants

74.We can infer from the last paragraph that .

A.there is a long way to go for a complete switch to alternative fuel

B.it won’t be long before alternative fuel comes into use

C.airlines, oil companies and airplane manufacturers are reliable

D.alternative fuel has a bright future

75.Which of the following can best serves as the title of this passage?

    A.Biofuel-Alternative Fuel Sources.

B.The First Commercial Flight Powered by Biofuel.

C.How to Reduce CO2 Emissions from Airplanes.

D.Vigin Airlines Trying to Alter Fuel Sources.
