The English language started in Britain in the 5th century . It is a mixed(混合的) language. It was built up when German , and French invaders (侵略者) settled in England and created a common language for communication .

Today, it is the official language of the UK, the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa and Ireland . Many other countries and regions use it for politics and business, for example, India, Pakistan, Nigeria and the Philippines. English is also one of the official languages of Hong Kong .

But global advertising and pop music mean that in most countries you will see or hear some English . Thanks to McDonalds, we all know about “ burgers ”, “ fries ” and “ milkshakes ” . Songs by Madonna , Britney Spears and Celine Dion are in English. We can sing along, even if we do not understand what we are singing !

English is a messy language. Every year, dictionaries include new words that talk about popular culture. For example, computer-related words such as “ blogging ”, “ download ” and “ chatroom ”. Also included are words that teenagers use . Who does not know “ cool ”, “ OK ” and  “ hello ” ?

Other languages also influence English. Many English words come from French. Words like “ cafe ” and expressions like “ C’est la vie ” (that is life) are all part of the English language. German words are also part of English . Words like “ kindergarten ” come from the German language . Recently , British people have become interested in “ yoga ” (瑜伽). But the word comes from an ancient Hindu language in India .

All in all , the English language is full of twists and turns and it is changing all the time . Make sure you keep up with it !

Can you remember the day when you spoke your first word? If you can, you are unusual. Try to imagine what first few months of your life were like. I am sure you just spent most of your time eating, sleeping and crying. As you grow older, you were awake more of the time. It took your parents more time to play with you and talk to you. You watched and listened curiously. You began to know that people made certain sounds to go with certain things.

Then you began to try making the sounds you heard. And step by step you were able to make the right sound for one thing.

On that day you came to understand the secret of language. The secret is that a certain sound means a certain thing. One sound might be as good as another. But it is no good as a word unless everybody agrees on its meaning. Only when a group of people use the same set of sounds of things can they understand each other. Then, and only then do these people have a LANGUAGE.

After you found the secret of language, you learned words. Some of the words meant things, such as BOOKS, CHAIRS and SHOES. Some words meant doing things, such as GO and SWIM. And other words described things, such as GOOD and DIRTY. Soon you learned to put words together to express one’s idea, such as “ I want to go out and play with my friends.” This is language. By means of language people can communicate. So we say languages are means of communication.

Everyone needs friends. We all like to feel close to someone. It is nice to have a friend to talk, laugh and do things with. Surely, there are times when we need to be alone. We don’t always want people around. But we would feel lonely if we never had a friend.

No two people are the same. Sometimes friends don’t get along well, which doesn’t mean that they no longer like each other. Most of the time they will go on being friends. Sometimes friends move away, then we feel very sad. We miss them much, but we can call them and write to them. Maybe we would never see them again, and we can make new friends. It is surprising to find out how much we like new people when we get to know them. Families sometimes name their children after a close friend. Many places are named after men and women, if they are friendly to people in a town. Some libraries are named this way. So are some schools. We think of these people when we go to these places.

There’s more good news for people, if they have friends. These people live longer than those people if those don’t have friends. Why? It could be that they are happier. Being happy helps you stay well. Or it could be just knowing that someone cares, if someone cares about you, you take better care of yourself and stay healthier .

I’m five years old , and my mother is washing the kitchen floor . I’m telling her about a new girl in school , and she suddenly looks up at me and says , “ Who are your two best friends ? ”

I’m not sure what to say . I’ve been friends with Jill since I was three or so , and I really like Jaime , a friend in kindergarten .

“ Jill and Jaime .”

“ Well , what about Karen and Cindy ?”

“ I don’t know who their best friends are ,” I say .

“ No ,” she says . “ I’m saying , why aren’t they your best friends ?”

“ But they’re my sisters .”

“ Yes , but they can still be your best friends . Friends may come and go , but your sisters will always be there for you .”

At that time , the idea of my two sisters being my closest friends seemed strange to me . We fought all the time over toys , food , attention , and what to watch on television . How could my sisters be my best friends ?

But my mother never let the three of us forget it : Sisters are lifelong friends . Her wish—like most parents’—was to give us something that she never had . Growing up as an only child , she longed for brothers and sisters . She gave birth to three daughters . She had given us each a gift—our sisters .

As we grew up , we realized that our mother was right . Today I share things with my sisters that I do with no one else . My sister Cindy and I ran the New York City Marathon together , side-by-side , even holding hands when we crossed the finish line . The three of us trust each other with our greatest secrets .
