18.We often see top students around us and everyone knows about them.Let us take Jenny as an example. She is the monitor of our class. She spends a lot of time working for our class. But she still gets good grades in all subjects. How do students like Jenny do that? When I asked her,she said,"Hard work is not the whole story. It's not how long you sit at the desk with your books open. It's what you do while you are sitting."Indeed,we can see many top students actually spend fewer hours on their studies than their classmates.Jenny gave me some valuable suggestions.
If your math teacher assigns(分派) five problems you should do six.If your Chinese teacher assigns eight pages of reading, you should read nine. The more you practice, the more you learn.
Studying is a matter of personal preference(偏爱),so choose the way you are most comfortable with. Some people like working at night when the house is quiet, while others like doing their work early in the morning.Still others like studying as soon as they arrive home from school while the work is fresh in their minds. No matter which way suits you,try to do your best.
Studying is your business and business comes before entertainment(娱乐).When you are studying, phone calls should go unanswered,TV shows unwatched, snacks ignored.Studying is the only thing in your mind.Nothing can pull your attention away from what you are studying.
Studying is like eating. You chew it one bite at a time. You can plan what to do today, but don't do too much. When you can't finish the work you planned to do,you will feel disappointed and may lose confidence. On the other hand, you will not study well without a good plan.It all depends on how you arrange your time.
The students who hand in a clearly written paper is already half way to an A.Neat(工整的) papers are likely to get higher marks than sloppy(被泼水弄湿的) ones. When you write neatly and do your work carefully, the thoughts in your mind are clear. You are able to make fewer mistakes.

17.People unhappy with the rich:Poll (民意调查)
There is growing dissatisfaction toward rich people, according to a new online poll.
The poll by China Daily in collaboration with Sina.com has highlighted the apparent discontent over the country's widening income gap.
Nearly 8,000people filled in online questionnaires last week, and when asked to use three words to describe society's rich, the top responses were"extravagant","greedy"and"corrupt".
About 57percent of those polled said that"extravagant"was the best word to describe the rich, followed closely by"greedy".
Ironically,in spite of their dissatisfaction,93percent of those polled wished they could be rich too,and that richer people should be"socially responsible".
Around 33percent of respondents also praised rich people for being"smart".
Nearly 90percent of respondents agreed that most people in society, including themselves, were willing to speak up for the poor but were unwilling to take action and actually do something for them.
The survey comes on the heels of a heated debate over comments made by renowned economist Mao Yushi, who said he was"speaking for the rich and working for the poor".
A report released by the Asian Development Bank last Wednesday revealed that China's Gini coefficient(基尼系数)-an indicator of the wealth divide-rose from 0.407in 1993to 0.473in 2004.
An earlier CASS report said that the richest 10percent of Chinese families now own more than 40percent of all private assets, while the poorest 10percent share less than 2percent of the total wealth.
The country's income disparity(悬殊) is close to that of Latin America, the report which came out in January, said.

16.Disability aids are vital to those who suffer problems with executing work with two hands. These are people who have been disabled due to some major sickness or some other problems. In order to help them carry on their work in the normal way, disability aids are manufactured. This helps them make their life a lot easier than what it would have been without these aids. The kind of disability aids that an individual might require depends on the person only.It is the problem that a person faces that decides the aids that he/she will use for carrying out their respective jobs. The following is the list of a few disability aids that come of significant use.
The first and foremost aid is the stocking aid, aiding the individuals suffering from the problem of bending down to reach the foot and wear their own socks. These stocking aids have a gutter that is made up of plastic material. These gutters are shaped in a certain way along with the attachment of cotton tapes in it.The sock is then put over the gutter. The foot is placed inside the gutter. The cotton tapes help in pulling the socks up the leg and subsequently the sock.In this manner, the sock is worn by a person who has problems wearing it by bending one's back and reaching the foot.
There are openers that help the people who have problems with their hands or wrists to open bottles of ketchup, jam and other such bottles and jars that necessitates the use of hands and fingers.
The third type of disability aids that comes to our minds are lifts. Now what are lifts?Lifts are certain machines that help in lifting people from specific areas, such as a bathtub or a set of stairs. These lifts are of varied types and come for numerous applications. It is for the individual to decide the type that he/she requires to use.
For people, who have problems in balancing their upper bodies in a stable manner, there is something known as grab rails. These grab rails are installed for those who have mobility problems in their upper bodies. These rails come in varieties of shapes, sizes and angles. These grab rails are available to home users as well,in their different variations. One can purchase and fix one to their homes according to one's specificities. These grab rails require the act of screwing and drilling in order to fix them to their appropriate place. The prices of these rails also vary according to the variation of their shapes and sizes.
A portable book holder is a much sought-after disability aid.It can be used by anybody for that matter, not just the disabled. These portable book holders are light-weight and can be easily moved about. These holders relieve the strains on one's hands, necks and shoulders that might occur due to the handling of a book. The holders are provided with extended legs that help in placing the reading material at suitable distance.
Thus with the help of these disability aids, the old and disabled people can make their lives much more convenient and comfortable that would otherwise have been a cumbersome and complex one.

14.Many people think a telephone is a necessity. But I think it is of great harm and a time waste.Very often you find it impossible to escape from it.If you have a telephone in your own house, you will admit that it tends to ring when you least want it to ring:when you are asleep or in the middle of a meal or a conversation,or when you are just going out,or when you are in your bath. Are you strong-minded enough to ignore it?You are not.You think there may be some important news or message for you.I can assure you that if a message is really important it will reach you sooner or later.Have you ever gone to answer a telephone in a hurry from the bath,or from the table,or from the bed, only to be told that you are a wrong number?
But you will say,you need not have your name printed in the telephone directory, and you can have a telephone which is only usable for outgoing calls.Besides, you will say, isn't it important to have a telephone in case of sudden emergency---illness,accident,or fire?Of course, you are right, but here in a thickly populated country like England one is seldom far from a telephone in case of dreadful necessity.
I think perhaps I had better try to justify myself by trying to prove that what I like is good.I admit that in different circumstances---if I were a wealthy and powerful businessperson, for instance,or badly ill and had to lie in bed.I might find a telephone a necessity. But then if I were a taxi-driver I should find a car a necessity.Let me put it another way:there are two things for which the English seem to show particular talent:one is mechanical invention, the other literature. My own business happens to be with the use of words but I see I must now stop using them. For I have had just been handed a piece of paper to say that somebody is waiting to speak to me on the telephone.I think I had better answer it.After all,one never knows,it may be something important.
