8.When I was a child,I often dreamed of the time when I could leave home and escape to the city.We lived on a farm and,in the winter especially,we were quite cut off from the outside world. As soon as I left school,I packed my bags and moved to the capital. However,I soon discovered that city life has its problems too.
One big disadvantage is money---it costs so much to go out,not to mention basics like food and housing.Another disadvantage is pollution.I suffer from asthma(哮喘),and at times the air is so bad that I am afraid to go outside. Then there is the problem of travelling round.Although I have a car,I seldom use it because of the traffic jams. One choice is to go by bicycle, but that can be quite dangerous.
Of course there are advantages.First, there is so much to do in the city, whatever your tastes in culture or entertainment.Besides, there are wonderful jobs and greater chances of moving to a more important job or position. Finally,if you like shopping, the variety of goods is very surprising---and,what is more, shops are often only a short walk away.
Is life better then,in the city?Perhaps it is,when you are in your teens(十几岁) or twenties. However,as you get older, and especially if you have small children, the peace of the countryside may seem preferable.I certainly hope to move back there soon.

5.Regarded as one of the English language's most gifted poets,John Keats wrote poetry that concentrated on imagery,human nature,and philosophy.Although Keats didn't receive much formal literary education,his own studies and passion brought him much success.Additionally,his own life situation influenced his poetry greatly.
Growing up as a young boy in London in a lower,middle-class family,the young John didn't attend a private school,but went to a public one.His teachers and his family's friends regarded him as an optimistic boy who favored playing and fighting much more than minding his studies.After his father's death in the early 1800s,followed by his mother's passing due to tuberculosis (肺结核),he began viewing life differently.He wanted to escape the world and did so by reading anything he could get his hands on.
At around the age of 16,the teenage John Keats began studying under a surgeon so that he too might become a doctor.However,his literary appetite had taken too much of his fancy,especially with his addiction to the poetry of Ehmund Spenser.He was able to have his first full poem published in the Examiner in 1816,entitled O Solitude!If I Must With Thee Dwell.Within two monthOs in 1817,Keats had written an entire volume of poetry,but was sharply criticized by a magazine.However,the negative response didn't stop his pursuit of rhythm (韵律).
John Keats'next work was Endymion,which was published in May 1818.The story involves a shepherd who falls in love with the moon goddess and leads him on an adventure of one boy's hope to overcome the limitations of being human.Following Engymion,however,he tried something more narrative-based and wrote Isabella.During this time,John Keats began seeing his limitations in poetry due to his own limit in life experiences.He would have to have the"knowledge"associated with his poems.His next work was Hyperion that would attempt to combine all that he learned.However,a bout (发作) with tuberculosis while visiting Italy would keep him from his work and eventually take his life in 1821.

4.It was a dreadfully cold and cloudy afternoon.I was on the bus with my children,aged four and two,heading home when it started to rain.I realized this would mean a wet walk home (16)from the bus stop.
(17)Although/Though/Whilemy house was merely two blocks away,it was not a pleasant walk with one small boy asleep in the pram (手推婴儿车),the other one in a raincoat and no umbrella for myself.A pick-up truck passed us on the road.I tried to thumb a ride but failed.My little boy woke up with a start and began to cry.I(18)was convinced  (convince) that thins might become worse and nobody would bother to help on such a terrible day.
A few minutes later,(19)another truck drove by,but to my surprise,I saw it (20)pulling (pull) back and the driver looking directly at us.
A young man put the window down."Hey,here's an umbrella for you,please take (21)it."He called out.
I stood there (22)astonished (astonish),barely believing that the man(23)whose existence was unknown to me only moments ago,could be so (24)considerate (consider)."Come on,give this to your mummy,"he said to my older son.I accepted the offer and expressed my gratitude to him.
This man might have needed the umbrella for himself later during the day but preferred to give it to me.It was a lesson to me (25)that it's possible to give without expecting anything in return.
3.It was Molly's job to hand her father his brown paper lunch bag each morning before he headed off to work.
One morning,in addition to his usual lunch bag,Molly handed him a second paper bag.This one was worn and held together with staples (订书钉).
"Why two bags?"her father asked."The other is something else,"Molly answered."What's in it?""Just some stuff.Take it with you."
Not wanting to discuss the matter,he put both bags into his briefcase,kissed Molly and rushed off.At midday he opened Molly's bag and took out the contents:two hair ribbons (丝带),three small stones,a plastic dinosaur,a tiny sea shell,a small doll,and 13pennies…The busy father smiled,finished eating,and swept the desk clean into the wastebasket,Molly's stuff included.
That evening,Molly ran up behind him as he read the paper."Where's my bag?""What bag?""The one I gave you this morning.""I left it at the office.Why?""I forgot to put this note in it,"she said."And,besides,Daddy,the things in the sack are the things I really like-I thought you might like to play with them.You didn't lose the bag,did you,Daddy?""Oh,no,"he said,lying."I just forgot to bring it home.I'll bring it tomorrow."While Molly hugged her father's neck,he unfolded the note that read:"I love you,Daddy."Molly had given him her treasures-all that a 7-year-old held dear.
Love in a paper bag,and he missed it-not only missed it,but had thrown it in the wastebasket.So he went back to the office.Just ahead of the night janitor (看门人),he picked up the wastebasket.He put the treasures inside and carried it home carefully.The bag didn't look so good,but the stuff was all there and that's what counted.

1.People in the United States honor their parents with two special days:Mother's Day,on the second Sunday in May,and Father's Day,on the third Sunday in June.These days are set aside to show love and respect for parents.They raise their children and educate them to be responsible citizens.They give love and care.These two days offer a chance to think about the changing roles of mothers and fathers.More mothers now work outside the home.More fathers must help with child-care.
These two special days are celebrated in many different ways. On Mother's Day people wear  carnations.A red one stands for a living mother.A white one shows that the mother is dead.Many people attend religious services(宗教仪式)to honor parents.It is also a day when people whose parents are dead visit their graves.On these days,families get together at home and in restaurants.They often have outdoor BBQs for Father's Day.These are days of fun and good feelings and memories.
Another tradition is to give cards and gifts.Children make them in school.Many people make their own presents.These are valued more than the ones bought in stores.It is not the value of the gift that is important,but it is"the thought that counts".Greeting card stores,florists,candy makers,bakeries,telephones companies and other stores do a lot of business during these holidays.
