8.Working Christmas Day
It was unusually quiet in the emergency room on December 25.
I was a triage nurse (分流护士)(36)Cthat day, sighing about having to work on Christmas.Just then five bodies showed up at
my (37)A,a pale woman and four small children.
"Are you all(38)C?"I asked doubtfully.
"Yes."the woman said(39)D and lowered her head.
But when it came to the(40)Bof their problems, things got a
little strange. Two of the children had headaches(41)B weren't
accompanied by the normal symptoms of being ill.Two children had earaches, but only one could tell me which ear was(42)DThe mother complained of a(43)D hut seemed to work to produce it.
"It may be a little while(44)Aa doctor sees you."I explained.
"Take your time; it's warm here."She(45)C.
While they were waiting,I checked the chart. They had no(46)B-they were homeless. The waiting room was warm.I looked out at the(47)Dby the Christmas tree. The youngest one was saying(48)Ato her mother. The oldest one was looking at the Christmas tree.
I went back to the nurses'station and(49)B the homeless family in die waiting room. The nurses, complaining about the working Christmas, began to feel pity for a family just trying to get(50)Don Christmas. The team went into action,as we do when there's a (51)Cemergency,but this was a Christmas emergency.
We(52)Ca simple dinner for our Christmas guests in the hospital cafeteria. They needed,so(53)Dwe collected from different departments candies and other things(54)Cthat could be presents.
As the family walked to the door to leave, the four-year-old came running,gave(55)Bme a hug and whispered,"Thanks for being our angel today."

3.When I was thirteen,my family moved from Boston to Tucson,Arizona.(11)D the move,my father (12)A us in the living-room on a freezing January night.My sisters and I sat around the fire,not (13)C that the universe would suddenly change its course."In May,we're (14)B to Arizona."
The words,so small, didn't seem (15)C enough to hold my new life.But the world changed and I awoke on a tram moving across the country.I watched the (16)C change from green trees to flat dusty plains to high mountains as I saw strange new plants that (17)Amysteries yet to come.Finally,we arrived and (18)A into our new home.
(19)D my older sisters were sad at the loss of friends,I (20)D explored our new surroundings.
One afternoon,I was out exploring (21)B and saw a new kind of cactus(仙人掌).I crouched (蹲) down for a closer look."You'd better not (22)D that."
I turned around to see an old woman.
"Are you new to this neighborhood?"I explained that I was,(23)B,new to the entire state.
"My name is Ina Thorne.Have you got used to life in the (24)A?It must be quite a (25)C after living in Boston."
How could I explain how I (26)A the desert?I couldn't seem to find the right words.
"It's vastness,"she offered."That vastness (27)B you stand on the mountains overlooking the desert---you can (28)C how little you are in comparison with the world. (29)D,you feel that the possibilities are limitless."
That was it.That was the feeling I'd had ever since I'd first seen the mountains of my new home.Again,my (30)B would change with just a few simple words.
"Would you like to come to my home tomorrow?Someone should teach you which plant you should and shouldn't touch."

2.Girls are born to imagine,particularly those at the age of seventeen or eighteen. (16)C,I was one of them and sometimes I would go to extremes.That was exactly what happened several days ago,causing me great embarrassment.
I was waiting for my train home at the station when a boy (17)C at my side.His beautifully-curved face,his fashionable clothing and everything else about him,was so
(18)A that I just couldn't help gazing (注视) at him.What was more (19)D was that,he was also stealing some (20)D at me,which made me blush (脸红) to the ends of my ears!Still,I tried to be calm and (21)B that nothing had happened.However,once again when our eyes met,I could hear my heart (22)A wildly,with an inner voice yelling,"Oh,my goodness,he is driving me (23)B!"Shortly,I lowered my head to (24)C his eyes,but my thoroughly red face had revealed (泄露) (25)D.
To my pleasant surprise,my (26)A came true this time,as the handsome guy was drawing
(27)B!"Oh,please!Don't (28)C.Look at me.I am so sweaty and sloppy (多情的).Please don't (29)B my telephone number.You know I will give it to you without (30)A,and that is so unladylike!"I was still struggling and trembling when he (31)C right in front of me."Excuse me…"he said with a slight hesitation.His voice was so nice,but I wish I had not (32)A it,for in the end,he said:"I am sorry,but could you please give me my (33)B back?Yours is over there."Oh,my God!Nothing could have been more (34)D when I handed his bag back to him,as shame almost brought me to tears.
From that,I drew a big (35)B:never imagine too much if someone gives you a few glances.
