20.Whether or not you believe Professor Stephen Hawking's alarming theory that building a"strong"artificial intelligence (AI) could lead to the end of the human race,it's clear that AI is reaching the point where soon it will affect almost every aspect of how we work with computers.We must get used to computers that talk back.
Last year,investment bank Deep Ventures attracted much media attention when it announced that it had appointed an AI computer to its board of directors to help make important business decisions.What actually happened was that the company used a program called VITAL to analyse potential investments (授资) in different businesses.But VITAL doesn't attend board meetings or vote-it's just a program.While it's not quite the evil robot we see in science fiction movies,it shows us how far computers and AI have advanced.
Soon AI systems will be driving our vehicles,interpreting our facial expressions as we perform complex tasks,translating our voices into different languages and building other machines for us in factories around the world.But they won't look like us or pretend to be human.
In the new film Ex Machina,a computer scientist is asked to assess whether a beautiful human-looking robot called Ava has human intelligence.I won't spoil the film for you,but it occurred to me that one of the reasons we believe other human beings are conscious and have intelligence is that we're told they are all.the time.Indeed,if you stopped believing other people have minds,you would quickly find yourself unable to function in the world.
Google's Eric Schmidt argues that we shouldn't worry about AI,and that we need instead to redesign our education systems so that we learn how to get on with the machines.As powerful computer-based intelligences continue developing,we must let go of the belief that only humans have intelligence and consciousness.Just as we have accepted the reality that the self-awareness that makes minds possible exists within the animal world,we may soon accept that it can also exist within the machine world.
28.According to Professor Stephen Hawking,human beingsA.
A.may be endangered by strong AI
B.are still more intelligent than machines
C.will benefit greatly from the advances in AI
D.will never be able to build a strong AI system

C.Intelligent machines will eventually control the world.
D.Only humans can have intelligence and consciousness.
19.At most schools,"going green"means generating less trash or making an attempt to recycle.But at New York's Riverdale Country School,it means being encouraged to run and even jump in the hallway.That's because the school was the first to install ( 安装 ) the specially-designed Pavegen floor tiles (地砖) in America.
The tiles use kinetic energy (动能) expanded by the kids and transform it into electricity that can be used to power classroom lights,science projects and charge electronic devices.The first US installation of Pavegen tiles near the school's student center is thanks to 14-year-old Zach Halem,who managed to convince the officials to purchase them.
Besides providing fun green energy,the tiles also serve as a learning tool.Every time a student steps on one,a brightly-lit LED board provides instant feedback (反馈信息) on how much energy was generated.Depending on the force,every step results in between one to seven watts-enough power to light an LED street lamp for about 30seconds.
Made largely from rubber and other recycled materials the tiles are invented by the 26-year-old British industrial designer Laurence Kembell-Cook.While new to the US,they have been installed in numerous places in Europe,ranging from a London underground station to a marathon track in Paris.However,it was not until Pavegen started getting popular in London schools that Laurence realized that his invention not only saved energy,but was also fun!
Though the young inventor will not give too many details about the technology behind this green tile,he says that it is very different from other kinetic energy harvesting systems.
Whatever the secret,let's hope more US schools decide to install these fun tiles.In fact,why stop at schools?These tiles could be installed everywhere,from sidewalks to homes.Then we could all be"green"and have fun!Who knew that was even possible?
13.What can we learn from the first paragraph?C
A.American students are encouraged to run and jump as much as possible.
B."Going green"means generating less trash or making an attempt to recycle.
C.New York's Riverdale Country School took a different way to go green.
D.New York's Riverdale Country School is the first US school to try new ways to go green.
14.Which of the following statements is TRUE about Laurence Kembell-Cook?A
A.His original motive to invent the Pavegen tiles was to save energy.
B.He believed his invention would be popular with students.
C.He keeps all the technology behind this green tile a secret.
D.He persuaded the school to install Pavegen tiles.
15.Which part of a website is the passage probably taken from?A
A.Science.B.Architecture.

18.Will Nanfang University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen announce a new beginning for China's higher education reform?It's too early to answer.But its presence is challenging the Ministry of Education.Even without the approval of the ministry it seems that the school is determined to move forward and enroll 50students,so-called child prodigies(奇才),to begin classes on March 1,2011.On graduating in 2015,these students will receive a diploma unauthorized by the Ministry of Education-unlike the students of their age from the state-run universities.
The school is committed to modeling itself on Hong Kong University of Science and Technology,but if the government will not approve the school,the situation could cause a lot of trouble for those 50students if they want to do graduate studies at other higher learning institutions.Other schools could turn their applications down for their unathorized diplomas.
The difficulties,however,have not frightened students and their  parents away.On Dec.18,2010more than 1,000students and their parents visited Nanfang University of Science and Technology for interviews.
Private investment marks the school out from other higher learning institutions in the nation.Not a penny comes from the government.So the government will have no voice in how the school will be run.
The Ministry of Education has published a comprehensive plan for education reform and development between 2011and 2020.The goal is to make China's higher education internationally competitive.To accomplish this goal,the government should have the courage to let the educators who have big ideas try them out.The ministry should have applauded the independence the school in Shenzhen has shown and encouraged more to do likewise.
Education reform in China has reached a new and crucial stage.Nanfang University of Science and Technology has a long way to go to prove itself competitive rather than a diploma mill.

32.What will make those 50students different from others?D
A.They are all child prodigies.
B.They will study much longer time.
C.They are willing to challenge the Ministry of Education.
D.They will receive an unauthorized diploma.
33.Over 1,000students and parents visited the school becauseA.
A.they believe that the school will have a bright future
B.they believe the government is sure to approve the school
C.the school models itself on Hong Kong University successfully
D.they will never do graduate studies at other higher learning institutions
34.The trouble the students in the school may have is thatC.
A.the government will have no voice in the school
B.they won't receive any diploma when graduating from the school
C.other schools are unlikely to accept their diploma from the school
D.they will not learn how to be competitive
35.What does the author think of Nanfang University of Science and Technology?D
A.It is another kind of diploma mill.
B.It's impossible for the school to be competitive.
C.It will never get the approval from the Ministry of Education.
D.Its independence from the government may benefit the education reform.

16.Many little girls like flowers, watching butterflies and riding small horses.A lot of them also like cars, robots and spaceships. But most girls'clothing only has pictures of flowers, butterflies or horses.
Two mothers decided to make clothes that include all the things that little girls do and love.
Six-year-old Bella loves to play with cars.So her dress has pictures of cars on it.
"We haven't found this type of dress in the store,"Cathy,Bella's mother, says.
The car dress is from a new girl's clothing line called Princess Awesome.Rebecca Melsky set up the business. She says its products for girls have some designs normally found on boys'clothes.
It all started two years ago when Rebecca was hoping to buy clothing for her two-year-old,who liked robots, trucks and spaceships.
"One day when I walked through a girls'store,I thought to myself I wish they'd make one of those beautiful dresses that also have a robot on it because she will love that. And I thought someone should do that.Maybe I should do that,"Rebecca, said.
Her friend Eva St.Clair believed she should, and their business was born. The women sold the first 70 dresses they made at a market. So they decided to expand their business online.Their products sold very well there, too.
"They sold out so fast that I could not make them fast enough. We decided it was time to think about a factory,"Rebecca said.
So they started to raise money from people over the Internet. The women raised more than 215,000 within days, far more than the 35,000 they expected.
"Our biggest challenge is going to be how we expand as rapidly as people seem to want us to,"Rebecca said.
The women hope Princess Awesome will expand into products for girls of all ages and all interests.

15.Before the law sits a gatekeeper. To this gatekeeper comes a man from the country who asks to gain entry into the law.But the gatekeeper says that he cannot grant him entry at the moment. The man thinks about it and then asks if he will be allowed to come in sometime later on."It is possible,"says the gatekeeper,"but not now."The gate to the law stands open,as always, and the gatekeeper walks to the side,so the man bends over in order to see through the gate into the inside. When the gatekeeper notices that,he laughs and says:"If it tempts you so much, try going inside in spite of my prohibition. But take note.I am powerful. And I am only the most lowly gatekeeper. But from room to room stand gatekeepers, each more powerful than the other.I cannot endure even one  glimpse of the third."
The man from the country has not expected such difficulties:the law should always be accessible for everyone,he thinks, but as he now looks more closely at the gatekeeper in his fur coat,at his large pointed nose and his long, thin, black Tartar's beard,he decides that it would be better to wait until he gets permission to go inside. The gatekeeper gives him a stool and allows him to sit down at the side in front of the gate. There he sits for days and years. He makes many attempts to be let in,and he wears the gatekeeper out with his requests. The gatekeeper often interrogates him briefly, questioning him about his homeland and many other things, but they are indifferent questions, the kind great men put,and at the end he always tells him once more that he cannot let him inside yet.The man,who has equipped himself with many things for his journey, spends everything,no matter how valuable,to win over the gatekeeper. The latter takes it all but,as he does so,says,"I am taking this only so that you do not think you have failed to do anything."
During the many years the man observes the gatekeeper almost continuously. He forgets the other gatekeepers, and this first one seems to him the only barrier for entry into the law.He curses the unlucky circumstance,in the first years thoughtlessly and out loud; later,as he grows old,he only mumbles to himself. He becomes childish and, since in the long years studying the gatekeeper he has also come to know the fléas ( PZ) in his fur collar,he even asks the fleas to help him persuade the gatekeeper. Finally his eyesight grows weak, and he does not know whether things are really darker around him or whether his eyes are merely deceiving him.But he recognizes now in the darkness a ray of light which breaks out of the gateway to the law.Now he no longer has much time to live.
Before his death he gathers in his head all his experiences of the entire time up into one question which he has not yet put to the gatekeeper. He waves to him, since he can no longer lift up his stiffening body. The gatekeeper has to bend way down to him,for the great difference has changed things considerably to the disadvantage of the man."You are insatiable (不知足的)."t "Everyone strives after the law,"says the man,"so how is it that in these many years no one except me has requested entry?"The gatekeeper sees that the man is already dying and,in order to reach his diminishing sense of hearing,he shouts at him,"Here no one else can gain entry, since this entrance was assigned only to you.I'm going now to close it."

13.At primary school in New Zealand,I was introduced to a school savings account run by one of the local banks.When our money box was full,we took it to the bank and watched with pride as our coins flowed across the counter.As a reward,we could choose our next money box from a small variety,and start the whole savings routine again.Every week I watched my parents sort out the housekeeping and"make ends meet".Sometimes it was annoying to wait for things we really felt we needed.
Later,as a university student,I managed on an extremely small student allowance.Students were ignored by banks then,because we were so poor,and there was no way I could have gotten credit,even if I had tried.We collected our allowance three times each year,deposited it to the best advantage and withdrew it little by little to last until the next payout of the allowance.
When our daughter,Sophie,began to walk,we made a purposeful choice to encourage her to use money wisely.We often comment when the TV tells us"You owe it to yourself to borrow our money"-to whom do we really owe it?And what would happen if our income were reduced or dried up?Now,as a 12-year-old child,it's almost embarrassing to see her tight"financial policy",and wait for the unavoidable holiday sales to buy what she wants.
I agree that financial education in schools is very important.But the root of the problem lies with us and the way we behave as role models to those who follow.
25.What did the author learn from her parents?D

D.He seldom withdrew it.
