11.New York times,Nov,24,2011-It is not just any bug,but the native nine-spotted ladybug.And its reappearance is something of a relief,because it is the official New York State insect,even though the last recorded sighting of it in New York was 29years ago.
Its absence had not gone completely unnoticed.There was a moment in 2006when the State Assembly,realizing that the state insect had left the state,tried to replace it with a different species of ladybug,an attempt that fortunately gave in to law.
And now-after all these years-the state insect has been found.Like so many other New Yorkers,it was seen summering in Amagansett.Peter Priolo,a volunteer participant in an effort called the Lost Ladybug Project,found the ladybug on July 30in a patch of sunflowers during a group search he had organized.
"I didn't realize it was a nine-spotted when I found it,"Mr.Priolo said.He was on his way to do an end-of-the-day ladybug record,so,he said,"I put it in my jar and hurried back to meet with everybody."
If the ladybugs are making a comeback,it is only beginning.The lost Ladybug Project started surveys in 2000.As of 2006,only five nene-spotted ladybugs had been found in North America in the previous 10years,none of them in the East.Then one lone ladybug was found in Arlington,Va.None had been found in the East since,and only 90have been reported in North America.
After scientists at Cornell confirmed Mr.Priolo's find,they went to the Amagansett farm in mid-August to lead a search that turned up about 20more of the bugs.An area between rows of carrots and beans turned out to be a hot spot."We found a lot of them on cosmos and zinnias,"said Dr.Losey said,an insect expert.The farm is part of the 10,000-acre Peconic Land Trust in Amagansett,and it is organic.For ladybugs,Dr.Losey said,"you couldn't design a better place."
Dr.Losey wants to find out if it makes sense to reintroduce this strain of the ladybug in other areas.And he expects volunteers to be back out in the field when ladybug season starts again in the spring.Now,he said,"we need to find out more places where there are just as many."

10.WAS the London Olympics a success? Many people hold different opinions. However one thing is certain,London could win a gold medal for hosting the"greenest"Games ever,BBC News reported.
Previous Olympic hosts have been criticized for the environmental damage they have caused through construction, waste.and transport. But things had to be different in London because seven years ago it bid for the Olympics through the concept of"a One Planet Olympics".
What is most impressive is that London used the construction of the Olympic Park as an opportunity to clean up polluted areas-2 million tons of contaminated (被污染的) soil were removed and 200 old factory buildings, were torn down, according to sustainablebusiness.com.But that's not all-.99 percent of the debris (废瓦砾) were reused to build the Olympic Park. For example, part of the Olympic Stadium's roof is made from 2,500 tons of steel tubes recycled from old gas pipelines.
As well as using recycled materials, all venues were built with green building techniques. The Olympic Stadium is the lightest one ever built, which minimized the amount of steel and concrete needed. Also, the handball field has lighting pipes on the roof that reduce electricity use by 40 percent, according to sustainablebusiness.com.
The effort that London made to deal with waste also deserves praise.Water used for drinking and watering plants was from collected rainwater or recycled wastewater. In this way.about 30-40 percent less water was used in total.Waste food packages were either recycled or processed and turned into renewable energy.
As one of the best connected places in Europe,London tried to solve traffic jams by encouraging the use of public transport. For example,it had trains deliver half of the building materials, instead of cars, which greatly reduced carbon emissions.
The clean anti-doping (反兴奋剂) result also added to the greenness of the Games. The International Olympics Committee (IOC) said that the devices used this time were the most accurate and advanced.Only one athlete tested positive for a banned drug on the day of competing, which is why the IOC President,Jacques Rogge, has praised anti-doping efforts at the London Games.

8.Disease,poverty,hate,love-Charles Dickens'stories opened his readers eyes to the most important themes of his age.Two hundred years on,his stories still speak volumes(有意义)across the world, proving that Dickens'legacy(遗产)was far greater than just"great literature"
February 7 marks the 20th anniversary of the writer's birthday. To mark this date,BBC writer Alex Hudson listed six things Dickens gave the modem world.Let's take a look at two of them.
A white Christmas
Dickens is described  as"the man who invented Christmas"-not the religious festival, but the cultural aspects that we associate with the festive season today. In the early 19th century,Christmas was barely worth mentioning, according to critic and writer Leigh Hunt. The committee which ran the Conservative Party even held ordinary business meetings on Christmas Day-unthinkable in the West nowadays, when everyone but the most necessary workers takes at least three days off.
Many people believe that Dickens'popular descriptions of the festive period became a blueprint for generations to come.In his classic novel,A Christmas Carol,he not only put forward the idea of snow at Christmas, but also painted a picture of glowing warmth-home enjoyments, affections and hopes.
In his biography of Dickens,Peter Ackroyd wrote:"Dickens Can be said to have almost single-handedly created the modem idea of Christmas."
"Dickensian"poverty
Dickens was one of the first to take an honest look at the underclass and the poor of Victorian(the period during British Queen Victoria's reign from l837 to 1901)London.
He helped popularize the term"red tape"to describe situations where people in power use needless amounts of bureaucracy(官僚作风)in a way that particularly hurts the weaker and  poorer members of society.
"Dickensian"has now become a powerful word for describing an unacceptable level of poverty. In 2009,when the president of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers in the UK wanted to talk about deprivation(剥夺权利)in some areas of Britain, she did not use words like"terrible"or"horrific",but rather described it as"life mirroring the times of Dickens".

6.Today,we are told, children don't spend enough time in the fresh air. Many of them are addicted to a screen either on a computer or a TV-they seem to be living in a virtual world. They have lost touch with nature.
But now 400 organizations in the UK,from playgroups to the National Health Service, are encouraging children to have some"wild time".They want kids to swap at least 30 minutes of watching TV or playing computer games for time playing outside.Activities such as building dens, climbing trees and playing hide and seek are just some of the things kids can do.Even if they live in a city, they can go on adventures in the garden or the park.
Children often need a helping hand from mum and dad. They need to be shown what to do and where to go.Andy Simpson from National Health Service says,"We want parents to see what this magical wonder product does for their kids'development, independence and creativity,by giving wild time a go".
So despite the complicated world that young people grow up in now,it seems that going back to basics and experiencing"nature's playground"is what modern children need.David Bond from Project Wild Thing says,"We need to make more space for wild time in children's daily routine, freeing this generation of kids to have the sort of experiences that many of us took for granted".

Smoking is responsible for one of every five deaths. That includes 29% of all cancer deaths,87% of all lung cancer deaths, and nearly 20% of all deaths from cardiovascular disease. But long before smoking kills you,it ages you.You can see for yourself that smoking accelerates the drying and wrinkling of the skin. But there are less obvious effects as well.Indeed, smoking takes years away from your life.Nearly half of all chronic smokers die an average of 20 to 25 years before their time.
Besides an early death from cancer or heart disease, smoking can cause lung disorders.People who smoke over a pack a day have almost three times the risk of contracting pneumonia(肺炎) than that of nonsmokers.By lowering levels of estrogen(雌激素)in men and women, smoking speeds bone less.If a woman smokes a pack of cigarettes every day,she will enter menopause(更年期)with 5 to 10% less bone mass than a nonsmoker.
The good news is that no matter what your age is or how long you've smoked, you'll live longer if you quit today. The Coronary Artery Surgery Study examined nearly 2,000 long-term smokers over age 54.Those who quit had significantly lower death rates six years later than those who didn't.Even the oldest ex-smokers had a higher survival rate.
Not only will live longer if you quit, you'll feel better, breathe easier, and find that you have more energy. You'll have fewer respiratory infections, headaches, and stomachaches. What's more, you'll save money.Your clothes and breath won't smell unpleasant any longer. And your habit won't annoy-or threaten the health of-the people who live and work with you.

3.Kelly Reeves was getting ready for a trip when her phone slipped into a sink full of water.Panic moment!She quickly picked up the wet phone and tried to turn it on,but nothing worked.Her first reaction?She got dressed,drove to the nearest store,and bought a new model at full price.A new study finds that fear of losing your phone is a common illness.About 66percent of those surveyed suffer from (nomophobia) or"no mobile phone phobia".Interestingly,more women worry about losing their phone than men.Fortunately,there's a solution.The first step is to figure out if you have nomophobia.Checking your phone too often is one thing,but the true sign of a problem is that you can't conduct business or go about your routine when the fear becomes so severe.Do you go to unusual lengths to make sure you have your phone?That's another sign of a problem.If you find you check your phone plenty of times per hour,or a total of an hour per day,there may be a problem.Some of the treatments are similar to those for treating anxiety attacks:leaving the phone behind and not checking e-mail or text messages,and then learning to tolerate the after anxiety.Even if this leads to a high level of worry and stress,the solution is to push through the fear and learn to deal with not having your phone.Of course,there are also technological alternatives.Luis Levy,a co-founder at Novy PR,says he uses an application called Cerberus that can automatically track the location of his phone.To find it,he can just go to a Web site and see the phone's location.He also insures his phone through a service called Asurion.The company's description of its product reads like a prescription for anxiety:"60million phones are lost,stolen or damaged each year.You'll have complete peace of mind knowing that your phone is protected and you can quickly reconnect with family,friends and work,as soon as the very next day!"

C.Eagerness for new mobile phones.
D.Independence of mobile phones.

C.Protecting one's phone against any damage.
D.Not using a mobile phone in one's daily work.

Late one evening,I could hear the nurses in the next room repeatedly talking to a new patient."Sandy,your mom is here.Open your eyes."This had gone on throughout the night."Sandy,your dad has some flowers for you.Open your eyes and look at them."I asked the nurse as she checked in on me what had happened to Sandy.The nurse said that Sandy was about 17and had been involved in a car wreck.She was in a deep coma (昏迷),not in good shape.Over the next few nights,I started talking to Sandy.Although,it was said silently,I started to urge her to open her eyes or say something.Her parents visited with me one evening,and they seemed to be from an important family but in much grief,much like the faces of those that had visited me.And there I was speechless,immobile and had no real way of easing (减轻)their pain.It became very important to me to pray for her recovery,not my own.In some strange way,I believed that if Sandy would just open her eyes,my own situation would get better.
Sandy never came out of the coma as far as I know.During my stay in hospital,there were many times I felt like I was in an emotional coma.But I still could hear"just open your eyes."Even now I think of her quite often.I remember the long nights in the hospital,the smell of the hospital environment and the helplessness we all felt.Even though Sandy's situation was bad,I am thankful for understanding what it means to let go of your own problems and concentrate on others.
