4.In 2012,I had just recovered form a serious illness when I received an invitation to a writer's conference in Orlando,Florida. My family persuaded me that a(n) (36)holidaymight be just what the doctor ordered,so off I (37)went.
Arriving in the Sunshine State was rather tiring, but I (38)managed to catch a taxi to my(39)accommodation and settle in.Next morning,I took another (40)taxi to the shopping centre to buy a few souvenirs.(41)Later I went to a cafe to have lunch, but all the tables were (42)occupied.Then I heard a friendly voice saying,"You can (43)share my table."
I gratefully sat down with the (44)old lady and we had a happy lunch together. As the (45)mealdrew to a close she asked how long I would be in Orlando.I had already told her that I hadn't (46)hired a car,and hadn't realised how(47)expensivetaking taxis would he,After a while she said,"My dear, don't use any more taxis.I'm retired and it would be my pleasure to (48)drive you wherever you wish."I told her that I couldn't put her to that (49)trouble,but she brushed aside my protests (反对).She asked me where I wasstaying(50)stayingand next morning she was waiting at my apartment at the(51)appointed time to take me to Disney World. She spent some time with me before leaving me to (52)explore alone. At the end of the day,she (53)returnedto take me back to my accommodation.I (54)offered her money but she refused to take any.
I'll never forget that wonderful lady who, through her(55)kindness,filled my brief holiday in Florida with wonderful memories.

2.The Fitting-in of Suzy Khan
The first time I saw Suzy Khan,I knew I had to help her.She was really small for her age of 12.The boy in my class often (36)joked about her and laughed their heads off.She would open a book, pretending to read, with tears dropping on the open page.
All I knew was that she was an orphan (孤儿) from Africa. She had just been adopted by a family in town who (37)decided that the best way for her to learn American ways of life was to be with american kids.I looked down at this(38)tiny girl and promised myself that somehow I would help her.
But how could I help her (39)fit in with us?There had to be a (40)way.
One day, when I went into the classroom,I saw that Suzy had (41)opened her geography book to a picture of a train, and in her notebook, she had made a(n) (42)perfect copy.
I was surprised and thought that she could do something in the coming (43)talent show. So,I took her to see the art teacher,Miss Parker, and showed her what Suzy had (44)drawn."why,it's wonderful,"said Miss Parker, who then showed us a poster she had painted (45)for the talent show."I need more of these, but I just don't have enough (46)time.Could you help me,Suzy?"
On the day of the talent show,Suzy's (47)posters were everywhere----all over the hall and all over the school, each one different.
"And finally,"said Mr Brown, the schoolmaster,at the end of the show,"we have a (n)(48)special award.I'm sure you've all noticed the wonderful posters."Everyone nodded."One of our own students (49)painted them."
I could hear everyone whispering."Who in our school could draw (50)that well?"
Mr.Brown waited a while before saying,"(51)Since this student worked so hard on the posters, she deserves a(52)prize,too.Our mystery(神秘) artist is our new student----Suzy Khan!"
Mr.Brown thanked her for all the wonderful posters and gave her a professional artist's set."Thank you,"she cried.
I (53)realized,at that time when I was looking at her excited face, she'd probably never (54)owned anything in her whole life.
Everyone started to (55)clap their hands.Suzy Khan gave them a shy smile and the applause was defening.I knew then Suzy was going to ne all right.

20.From my second grade on,there was one event I feared every year:the piano recital(独奏演唱会).A recital (36)meantI had to practice a boring piece of music and perform before strangers. Each year I (37)wouldask my father if I could skip the recital"just this once".And each year he would shake his head, muttering(嘀咕) (38)somethingabout build self-confidence and working toward a (39)goal.
So it was with really great(40)satisfactionthat I stood in church one recent Sunday, video camera in hand, and (41)keptmy 68-year-old father sweating in his shirt (42)beforerising to play the piano in his very first recital.
My father had longed to play music since childhood, but his family was poor and couldn't (43)affordlessons.He could have gone on regretting it,(44)astoo many of us do.But though he was rooted in his past,he wasn't (45)stuckthere.When he retired three years ago,he (46)persuaded his church music director to take him as a student.
For a moment after my father sat down at the keyboard,he (47)simplystared down at his fingers.Has he forgotten the (48)notes?I worried, remembering those split seconds(49)decadesago when my mind would go blank and my fingers would (50)freeze.But then came the beautiful melody(旋律),from the(51)samefingers that once baited(装饵于) my fishing lines. And I(52)realizedhe had been doing what music teachers always stress:(53)concentrateonthe music and pretend the others aren't there.
"I'm (54)proudof him for starting something new at his age,"I said to my son Jeff.
"Yeah,and doing it so(55)nicely,"Jeff added.
With his first recital,my father taught me more about courage and determination than all the words he used those 30-plus years ago.

19.We have been driving in fog all morning, but the fog is lifting now.The little seaside villages are (36)appearing,one by one."There is my grandmother's house,"I say,(37)pointingacross the bay to a shabby old house.
I am in Nova Scotia on a pilgrimage (朝圣) with Lise,my granddaughter, seeking roots for her, retracing (追溯) (38)treasured memory for me.Lise was one of the mobile children,(39)moved from house to house in childhood. She longs for a sense of (40)home,and so we have come to Nova Scotia where my husband and I were born and where our ancestors (41)lived for 200years.
We soon (42)pullup by the house and I tell her what it was like here, the memories (43)rushing back, swift as the tide (潮水).
Suddenly,I long to walk again in the (44)housewhere I was once so gloriously a child. It still (45)belongstoa member of the family, but has not been lived in for a while. We cannot go into the house, but I can still walk(46)through the rooms in memory.
Here,my mother (47)sat in her bedroom window and wrote in her diary.I can still see the enthusiastic family (48)pouring into and out of the house.I could never have enough of being (49)with them. However, that was long after those childhood days.Lise (50)listens attentively as I talk and then says,"So this is where I (51)began; where I belong."

18.A Leap(跳跃)to Honor
Leaping on a narrow balance beam(平衡木) is not easy. But Lola Walter,a 13-year-old gymnast,is an expert at it.
To perfect her skills,Lola(36)trainsfor four hours a day, five days a week.At the state championships in March, she finished seventh out of 16girls.
That's especially impressive,(37)sinceshe is legally blind, born with a rare condition that causes her eyes to shift constantly. She often sees double and can't (38)tell how far away things are.
When she was little, her mom(39)noticedthat even though she couldn't see(40)well,she was fearless. So her mom signed her up for gymnastics when she was three. She loved the (41)sportright away and gymnastics became her favorite.
Though learning gymnastics has been more (42)differentfor her than for some of her tournaments, she has never quit. She doesn't let her (43)condition stop her from doing anything that she wants to.
She likes the determination it takes to do the sport. Her biggest (44)challengeis the balance beam.Because she has double vision, she often sees to beams. She must use her sense of touch to help her during her routine.Sometimes she even closes her eyes."You have to (45)trustyour mind that it'll take you where you want to go."says Lola.
To be a top-level gymnast, one must be brave. The beam is probably the most(46)fearfulfor anyone because it's four inches wide.At the state competition,Lola didn't fall (47)offthe beam.In fact, she got an 8.1out of 10-her highest score yet.
Lola doesn't want to be (48)treateddifferently from the other girls on her team.At the competitions, the judges don't know about her vision (49)problems_.She doesn't tell them, because she doesn't think they need to know. Her mom is amazed by her (50)positiveattitude.
Lola never thinks about (51)quitting.She is presently at level 7while the highest is level 10in gymnastics. Her
(52)rangeis to reach level 9.She says she wants to be a gymnastics coach to pass down what she's learned to
other kids (53)whenshe grew up.
Lola is (54)proudof all her hard work and success. She says it's helped her overcome problems in her life
outside gymnastics,too.Her(55)advicefor others is"just believe yourself".
