Anyone can try to lead a group, but not every individual(个人) is cut for leadership. The better leaders possess a few qualities that can mean the difference between the success and failure of the group. These are the qualities the leader of higher rank will look for when choosing a leader for a group or when evaluating the performance of a leader. They're also the qualities team member want in a group leader, and appreciate when they find them.

Take Responsibility

Group leaders might share tasks around a group as necessary, but eventually a group leader needs to be able to accept that responsibility lies on her shoulders. That means that if things go wrong in a group project, she's the one who must accept the consequences and work out what mistakes were made. The group leader won't always have the power to control everything group member do, but she should be ready to admit any mistake the group has made as a result of her leadership.

Concern for Members

The group leader has a commitment to the task or project at hand, but perhaps more importantly,he has a real concern for each and every person who is part of his group. This means getting to know the strengths, weaknesses and goals of team member, as well as making time to build the group through collective(集体的) activities. The group leader should make sure that everyone is include, even if an individual is new to a group.

Good listener

The group leader needs to be able to listen to the suggestions, complains(抱怨)and ideas of group member. Not only will this allow complaints to be spoken up and potentially suitable ideas to be put into practice, but a leader who listens will also encourage group members to share their concerns and thoughts, creating an atmosphere of free speech and productivity.

A woman baked bread for members of her family and an extra one for a hungry passer-by. She kept the extra bread on the window-sill (窗台), for whomever would take it away.

Every day, a hunch-back (驼背的人) came and took away the bread. Instead of expressing thanks, he said the following words as he went his way: "The evil (邪恶) you do remains with you. The good you do, comes back to you!"

This went on, day after day. Every day, the hunch-back came, picked up the bread and repeated the words. One day, the woman felt angry and decided to do away with him. She added poison (毒药) to the bread she prepared for him !As she was about to place it on the window sill, her hands trembled. "What is this I am doing?" she thought...As usual, the hunch-back came, picked up the bread and repeated those words.

That evening, there was a knock on the door. As usual, the hunch-back came, picked up the bread and repeated those words.

That evening, there was a knock on the door. As she opened it, she was surprised to find her son standing in the doorway. His clothes were torn. He was hungry, starved and weak. As he saw his mother, he said, "Mom ,it's a wonder I'm here. While I was but a mile away, I was so hungry that I fell down. I would have died, but just then an old hunch-back passed by. I begged of him for a small part of his food, and he was kind enough to give me a whole bread.

As the mother heard those words, her face turned pale and red. She remembered the poisoned bread that she had made that morning. Had she not burnt it in the fire, it would have been eaten by her own son, and he would have lost his life!

“Mobile phones killed our man.” screamed one headline last year. Also came statements that an unpublished study had found that mobile phones cause memory loss. And a British newspaper devoted its front page to a picture supposedly showing how mobile phones heat the brain. For anyone who uses a mobile phone, these are worring times. But speak to the scientists whose work is the focus of these scared and you will hear a different story.

What we do have, however, are some results suggesting that mobile phones’ emission(辐射) have a variety of strange effects on living tissue that can’t be explained by the general radiation biology. And it’s only when the questions raised by these experiments are answered that we’ll be able to say for sure what mobile phones might be doing to the brain.

One of the strange effects comes from the now famous “memory loss” study. Alan Preece and his colleagues at the University of Bristol placed a devic(装置) that copied the microwave emission of mobile phones to the left ear of volunteers. The volunteers were all good at recalling words and pictures they had been shown on a computer screen. Preece says he still can’t comment on the effects of using a mobile phone for years on end. But he rules out the suggesting that mobile phones have an immediate effect on our cognitive(感知的) abilities. “I’m pretty sure there is no short-term memory.” he says.

Another expert, Tatterasll, remarked that his latest findings have removed fears about memory loss. One result, for instance, suggests that nerve cell synapses(神经元突触) exposed to microwaves become more—rather than less—receptive to under-going changes linked to the memory formation.

It would be an even happier outcome if microwave turned out to be good for you. It sounds crazy, but a couple of years ago a team led by Willian Adey at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in California found that mice exposed to microwave for two hours a day were less likely to develop brain tumours(肿瘤) when given a cancer-causing chemical.

So should we forget about mobile phone radiation causing brain tumours and making us unable to think clearly or reasonably?

“If it doesn’t cause cancer in animals and cells, then it probably isn’t going to cause cancer in humans,” says William. And while there’s still no absolute evidence that mobile phone does damage your memories or give your cancer, the unanimity is: Don’t panic.

1.What worries people who use mobile phones?

A. Mobile phones will kill them.

B. Mobile phones cause memory loss.

C. Mobile phones heat the brain.

D. All above is right.

2.What is the attitude of Prece on the suggestion that mobile phones have an immediate effect on our congnitive abilities?

A. Doubt.B. Disagree.C. Approve.D. Wait and see.

3.The underlined word “unanimity ”in the last paragraph most probably means “_______”.

A. consensusB. disagreementC. possibilityD. impossibility

4.From the fifth paragraph, we can infer that being exposed to microwaves for two hours _________.

A. can result in killing you

B. is likely develop brain tumours

C. is unlikely to develop brain tumours

D. will cause your loss of memory for ever

With alarming regularity, we read about oil tankers(油轮) having accidents near land and the terrible consequences of the oil spills(泄露) on people, nature, and the environment.

Millions of dollars have been used in developing special chemicals to help dismiss the spills and to clean up the animals, beaches, and land spoiled by the oil.Unfortunately, when many of these chemicals are used, more damage is caused to the environment, especially to lives in the sea.

Of all of today’s environmental disasters, an oil spill may actually be one of the least serious.Although oil is poisonous, it is a natural material. In the end, it breaks down naturally. There are, of course, long-term effects, but it is usually more serious in the short term.

Nature by itself works better than chemical materials, but when there is a spill we demand that governments act immediately with as much hi-tech knowledge as possible. In 1967 the tanker Torrey Canyon sank off the Sicily Isles near the coast of England and spilled 120,000 tones of oil into the ocean. If you go there today, you will find it hard to see any sign that it ever happened.

Governments seem to accept the risk of transporting millions of tons of oil by ship every day so that we can fill up our cars and drive around and cause even more environmental damage.Interestingly, the biggest companies in the world produce cars, and the next biggest supply the gasoline to make them run!

We should be thinking more about reducing our dependency on oil.Governments should be encouraging research into new technologies, such as cars run by solar power, electricity, hydrogen, and so on.Much of this research has, in the past, been held back by the oil, gas, and coal.

If the world’s millions of cars were 10% more efficient— and the industry could easily produce cars at least twice as efficient — we would need many fewer tankers crossing the oceans each year.If this happened, the risks of oil spills would be reduced, and the air we breathe would be cleaner and fresher, too.

1.What is the passage mainly talking about?

A.Oil spills pollution.

B.What oil pollution is.

C.Oil tanker accidents.

D.How to reduce oil pollution.

2.How does the author support the idea that oil spills are not as serious as people believe?

A.By having a discussion .

B.By making an argument.

C.By giving an example.

D.By drawing a diagram.

3.What does the underlined word “risk” in Paragraph 5 refer to?

A.Transportation depending more on oil.

B.Poisonous oil breaking down naturally.

C.Millions of tons of oil spilling into the sea.

D.More environmental damage being caused.

4.Which suggestion is made for reducing oil tank accidents according to the passage?

A.We should build safer oil tankers in the near future

B.We should develop new technologies to cut oil use

C.Tankers should not be allowed to sail near the coastlines.

D.Countries should build more oil pipelines under the sea.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白的最佳选项,并在答题卡(卷)上将该项涂黑,选项中有两项为多余选项。

1. Most students graduating from high school and college this year will probably have jobs in the next decade that don 't even exist today because the technology to support those positions hasn 't even been invented yet .The concepts of going to work ,having one career ,moving for a new job ,and wasting time or avoiding doing any work may soon be a distant memory as the world of work as we know it is replaced by a brave new world where few travel to their jobs, work a 9-to -5 day ,or sit in endless staff meetings

2. In the past it was difficult to measure employee performance, and hours of productivity were wasted. Now many job tasks are measurable with automated time and task tools and individual performance can be directly linked to a company's bottom-line results.

3. Project teams can be organized all over the world, and cheap communication and document sharing tools such as Skype and Google docs can be used to share information. In addition, for many jobs, where you live may have little relevance in the future; you could be competing against a global rather than a local talent pool.

4. More and more companies are organizing project teams and disbanding the teams once the work is completed.

While all this sounds pretty scary at first glance, work in the future may be more rewarding than ever. People will have more freedom and control over their work environment and schedule and earnings will be based more on merit (绩效)than location. While it's true that not every job will fit into this futuristic (想象的)pattern, many will. 5.

A:No one knows what the future work is like .

B:Here's what the future of work looks like.

C:Do you know what you want to do in the future?

D:Will your job be part of the future of work?

E:The world of work is changing quickly .

F:For many professionals, gone are the days of traveling to a central location.

G:The days of working for one company and retiring with the gold watch are gone.

When I got home, I realized that not only had I cheered up a friend on her birthday, but my own gloomy feelings had also . Making her day had made my own!

I clearly remember the day when my little brother was born: January 1,1994. One of my favorite family photos shows me lying with my mother in the hospital bed, happy but unaware of the small, sleeping baby in the background.

I stayed with my grandparents for the weekend of my brother’s birth, excited about my new brother but not yet aware of what having a little brother would mean. I didn’t truly realize what was going on until we were in the hospital room at Duke University—coincidentally ,the same room in which I had been born two years earlier.

When I looked at my brother for the first time, I felt a mixture of fear and interest. Little did I know that small, pink creature would grow up to be one of my favorite people in the world.

In reality, though I am two years older than my brother, I am more often than not the real baby in the family. I am very lacking when it comes to common sense. Instructions constantly confuse me and I frequently find myself totally puzzled by things like knowing how to start the washing machine or manage the storage settings on my iPhone.

That’s where Gibson comes in. The poor kid has had to guide me through more tasks than I would care to admit, but he never complains. Though I should probably be told to figure it out myself, he always comes through.

I’m envious of his ability to readily answer the ever-present, “What do you want to do with your life?” question at family gatherings. “Be a doctor,” he says—a solid answer, completely opposite to my shaky one, “Well, I’m an English major, so…”

My brother truly is my best friend. No one understands me better, and there isn’t anyone else I would want to be stuck with in our family. I may not have a clear idea of where I’m headed, but he is stuck with me.
