Larry Ritsema was out for an early morning jog around his neighborhood one day. On a quiet street, he began to feel weak. Suddenly, everything went black. Larry fell to the ground.

Less than a minute later, Tom Alguire passed by on his bicycle. He caught sight of a man lying on the roadside, so he jumped off his bike and ran over. He recognized Larry immediately, because he had been Larry’s doctor for nearly 20 years.

Dr. Tom felt for a pulse (脉搏) at first. Finding none, he began to give Larry first aid. It wouldn’t restart Larry’s heart, but it would keep the blood flowing until someone else arrived. Tom could only hope someone would come by soon, at around six o’clock in the morning on a holiday weekend. Tom couldn’t stop pressing Larry’s chest to run for help — Larry’s brain cells would die without the blood. And Tom didn’t have a cell phone with him.

Soon, a car did drive by. But the driver ignored Tom’s appeal for help. What was he going to do? Tom was very worried. Finally, another car came down the road, driven by Michael Saliot, a U.S. Coast Guard Officer. Michael wasn’t one to pass up a chance to help a person in need. He quickly dialed 911.

Doctors then found that Larry had suffered a heart attack and there were severe blockages in two of Larry’s major arteries (动脉). Only the timely arrival of Dr. Tom saved his life.

Loneliness is like a disease, and what's worse, it's contagious．It can spread from one person to another, according to the recent research that stresses the power of one person's emotions to affect even people he doesn’t know．

The new analysis, involving 4,793 people who were interviewed every two years between 2005 and 2015, showed that a friend of a lonely person was 52％ more likely to develop feelings of loneliness by the time of the next interview．A friend of that person was 25％ more likely, and a friend of a friend of a friend was 15％ more likely．

“Loneliness is not just the property of an individual．It can be transmitted across people—even people you don't have direct contact with,” said John T．Cacioppo, a psychologist of the University of Chicago who led the study published in the December issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology．

Loneliness has been linked to medical problems, including depression, sleep problems and generally poorer physical health．Identifying some of the causes could help reduce the emotion and improve health, experts said．

Although the study did not examine how loneliness spreads, Cacioppo said another research has provided clues．“Let's say for whatever reason you get lonely．You then interact with other people in a more negative fashion．That puts them in a negative mood and makes them more likely to interact with other people in a negative fashion and they minimize their social ties and become lonely,” Cacioppo said．

According to Cacioppo, loneliness spread more easily among women than men, perhaps because women were more likely to express emotions．

Lonely people become less and less trusting others．This makes it more and more difficult for them to make friends－and more likely that society will reject them．Therefore, it is important to recognize and deal with loneliness．Cacioppo emphasizes people who have been pushed to the edges of society should receive help to repair their social networks．

In 1996, John Tierney suggested in the New York Times Magazine article that “recycling is garbage.” He wrote, “The money spent on recycling programs should have been spent on real social and environmental problems. But then it closed its last landfill (垃圾填埋地), and private companies out of New York raised prices due to the increased workload of carrying away and disposing New York’s garbage. As a result, glass and plastic recycling became profitable for the city again, and New York brought the program back. According to Cecil Adams of The Chicago Reader, the lessons learned by New York are relevant everywhere. He believes that, if managed correctly, recycling programs should cost cities less than garbage disposal.
