Michael Faraday was the son of a blacksmith (铁匠) .There were four children in his family and, with his father often ill and unable to work,Michael Faraday had to earn his living from an early age. This meant little or no schooling. However, the family belonged to a religious group, and Faraday learnt to read and write at Sunday school.

When he was only 14 ,Faraday found a job as a bookbinder (装订工) .He used to read the books he was given to bind and he became very interested in the scientific books, particularly the ones about electricity. His interest soon took a practical path and he began making his own experiments. These were very basic because Faraday had to make all of his equipment himself. However,he was very careful and kept a clear written record of all his findings.

One day,he was given an entrance ticket to the Royal Institute chemistry lecture by Humphry Davy. Determined to work for this great scientist,he sent Davy a job application (申请) including his laboratory reports on the experiments he had carried out. In 1813,Davy offered Faraday a job as one of his laboratory assistants. Faraday learnt quickly and soon was recognised as a very able chemist. Later,he went to work at the Royal Institute.

Michael Faraday was, perhaps, the greatest practical scientist of the 19th century. As a chemist,he discovered the benzene, which is now the central point of chemical study. He also proved the relationship between electrical bonding. As a physicist,he invented the dynamo (发电机) ,which led to the later invention of the electric motor.

Two friends have an argument that breaks up their friendship forever, even though neither one can remember how the whole thing got started. Such sad events happen over and over in high schcx) ls across the country. In fact, according to an official report on youth violence,uIn our country today, the greatest threat to the lives of children and adolescents is not disease or starvation or abandonment, but the terrible reality of violence”. Given that this is the case, why aren'tstudents taught to manage conflict the way they are taught to solve math problems, drive cars,or stay physically fit?

First of all, students need to realize that conflict is unavoidable. A report on violence among middle school and high school students indicates that most violent incidents between students begin with a relatively minor insult (侮辱) . For example,a fight could start over the fact that one student eats a peanut butter sandwich each lunchtime. Laughter over the sandwich can lead to insults, which in turn can lead to violence. The problem isn’t in the sandwich, but in the way students deal with the conflict.

Once students recognize that conflict is unavoidable, they can practice the golden rule of conflict resolution (解决 ) : stay calm. Once the student feels calmer,he or she should choose words that will calm the other person down as well. Rude words,name-calling,and accusations only add fuel to the emotional fire. On the other hand, soft words spoken at a normal sound level can put out the fire before it explodes out of control.

After both sides have calmed down, they can use another key strategy (策略) for conflict resolution: listening. Listening allows the two sides to understand each other. One person should describe his or her side, and the other person should listen without interrupting. Afterward, the listener can ask non-threatening questions to clarify the speaker^ position. Then the two people should change roles.

Finally, students need to consider what they are hearing. This doesn’t mean trying to figure out what's wrong with the other person. It means understanding what the real issue is and what both sides are trying to accomplish. For example,a shouting match over a peanut butter sandwich might happen because one person thinks the other person is unwilling to try new things. Students need to ask themselves questions such as these: How did this start? What do I really want? What am I afraid of? As the issue becomes clearer, the conflict often simply becomes smaller. Even if it doesn’t,careful thought helps both sides figure out a mutual solution.

There will always be conflict in schools, but that doesn’t mean there needs to be violence. After students in Atlanta started a conflict resolution program, according to Educators for Social Responsibility,<464 percent of the teachers reported less physical violence in the classroom; 75 percent of the teachers reported an increase in student cooperation;and 92 percent of the students felt better about themselves”. Learning to resolve conflicts can help students deal with friends, teachers, parents, bosses, and coworkers. In that way, conflict resolution is a basic life skill that should be taught in schools across the country.

Researchers in Britain are driving the environmental movement to a new level. A team from the University of Warwick has built what it calls the worlds first completely environmentally friendly Formula Three racing car.

The car is made mainly of renewable materials, like plants and vegetables. The structure around the car is made from natural plant fibers and potatoes. The steering wheel (方向盘) is made from root vegetables like carrots. The engine uses bio-fuel made from vegetable oil and waste chocolate.

The new racing car is extremely fast. The car has a top speed of two hundred and fifteen kilometres an hour. And it can go from zero to ninety-five kilometres an hour in just two and a half seconds. The racing car meets all of the Formula Three racing requirements except for its biodiesel(生物柴油) engine.

Automobile racing is one of the most widely watched sports in the world. But it is also considered one of the least friendly sports to the environment. Racing cars burn a lot of fuel, and create a lot of air pollution. In recent years, the racing industry has taken steps to protect the environment. More racing companies are now producing cars that use less energy. These cars produce less pollution than cars that depend on traditional fuel, like gasoline.

Last month, the new racing car was set to run in its first competitive race at the Formula Three Championship Final at Brands Hatch. It would have been the first biodiesel-powered car to race at Formula Three. Current Formula Three rules let only gasoline-powered car to compete. Officials needed permission from all of the Formula Three racers for the biodiesel-powered car to compete. They were unable to contact one of the drivers,so the new racing car didn't appear in the event. In test runs, the new racing car was the fifth fastest among the Formula Three race cars. Supporters are hoping to have the fuel problem solved in time to compete in the next season.

54. In recent years, racing companies are producing cars that.

   A. burn more fuel

   B. go more quickly

   C. produce less pollution

   D. cost less money

55. Why didn't the new racing car compete at the Formula Three Championship Final last month?

 but failed to contact one.

   C. Because there?re some technical problems to be solved.

   D. Because few drivers think it is fast enough.

Bicycle Safety

Operation Always ride your bike in a safe, controlled manner on campus (校园) . Obey rules and regulations. Watch out for walkers and other bicyclists, and always use your lights in dark conditions.

Theft Prevention Always securely lock your bicycle to a bicycle rack —even if you are only away for a minute. Register your bike with the University Department of Public Safety. Its fast, easy, and free. Registration permanently records your serial number, which is useful in the possible recovery of the bike stolen.

Equipment

Brakes Make sure that they are in good working order and adjusted properly. Helmet A necessity, make sure your helmet meets current safety standards and fits properly.

Lights Always have a front headlight—visible at least 500 feet in front of the bike. A taillight is a good idea. Rules of the Road

The speed limit for bicycles on campus is 15 mph, unless otherwise posted. Always give the right of way to walkers. If you are involved in an accident, you are required to offer appropriate aid, call the Department of Public Safety and remain at the scene until the officer lets you go.

Bicycle Parking Only park in areas reserved for bikes. Trees, handrails, hallways, and sign posts are not for bicycle parking, and parking in such spots can result in a fine.

If Things Go Wrong

If you break the rules, you will be fined. Besides violating rules while riding bicycles on campus, you could be fined for:

Russian police have launched a novel attempt to get drivers to slow down at zebra crossings by having stripe-painted horses as zebras walk across on the busiest streets in some of the big cities in an attempt to improve road safety and raise awareness among Russia's notoriously careless drivers.

The light grey horses, painted with black stripes, carried signs on their backs reading: Careful, children are on their way to school. The police dispatched (派遣) the fake zebras to several different locations in the Russian capital, where officials in orange vests walked them over zebra crossings and handed out flyers to passing drivers.

Some held up rainbow-coloured umbrellas over the painted animals to protect them from rain, footage aired on television showed.
