I suppose that the most basic and powerful way to connect to another person is to listen. Just listen. Perhaps the most important thing we ever give each other is our at?tention. And especially if it's given from the heart. When people are talking, there's no need to do anything but re?ceive them. Listen to what they're saying. Care about it. Most time caring about it is even more important than un?derstanding it. Most of us don't value ourselves or our love enough to know this. It has taken me a long time to believe in the power of simply saying "I'm so sorry"? when someone is in pain.

One of my patients told me that when she tried to tell her story people often interrupted to tell her that they once had something just like that happening to them. Her pain became a story about themselves. Eventually she stopped talking to most people. We connect through listening. When we interrupt what someone is saying to let them know that we understand,we move the focus of attention to ourselves. When we listen, they know we care.

I have even learned to respond to someone crying by just listening. In the old days I used to reach for the hand?kerchiefs, until I realized that passing a person a handker-  chief may be just another way to shut him down,to take i them out of their experience of sadness. Now I just listen. i When they have cried all they need to cry, they find me there with them. , This simple thing has not been that easy to learn. It . certainly went against everything I had been taught since I1 was very young.  I thought people listened only because they were too shy to speak or did not know the answer. But now I know that a loving silence often has far more power to heal than the kindest words.

Cellphones are the new cigarettes When you get in your car,you reach for it. When you're at work, you take a break to have a moment alone with it. When you get into a lift, you play with it.

Cigarettes? Cup of coffee? No,it's the third most ad?dictive thing in modern life, the cellphone. And experts say it is becoming more difficult for many people to curb their desire to hug it more tightly than most of their per?sonal relationships.

With its shiny surface, its smooth and satisfying touch, its air of complexity, the cellphone connects us to the world even as it disconnects us from people three feet away. In just the past couple of years, the cellphone has challenged individuals, employers, phone makers and counselors (顾问) in ways its inventors in the late 1940s never imagined.

The costs are becoming even more evident, and I don't mean just the monthly bill. Dr Chris Knippers,a counselor at the Betty Ford Centre in Southern California, reports that the overuse of cellphones has become a social problem not much different from other harmful addic?tions; a barrier to one-on-one personal contact, and an es?cape from reality.

Sounds extreme, but we've all witnessed the evi?dence: the person at a restaurant who talks on the phone through an entire meal, ignoring his kids around the ta?ble; the woman who talks on the phone in the car, igno?ring her husband; the teen who texts messages all the way home from school, avoiding contact with kids all around him.

Is it just rude,or is it a kind of unhealthiness? And pardon me,but how is this improving the quality of life?

Jim Williams? an industrial sociologist based in Mas?sachusetts, notes that cellphone addiction is part of a set of symptoms in a widening gulf of personal separation. He points to a study by Duke University researchers that found one quarter of Americans say they have no one to discuss their most important personal business with. De?spite the growing use of phones* email and instant messa?ging,in other words? Williams says studies show that we don't have as many friends as our parents. "Just as more information has led to less wisdom, more acquaintances via the Internet and cellphones have produced fewer friends," he says.

If the cellphone has truly had these effects,it's be?cause it has become very widespread. Consider that in 1987,there were only 1 million cellphones in use. Today, something like 300 million Americans carry them. They far outnumber wired phones in the United States.

A No poem should ever be discussed or "analysed"? until it has been read aloud by someone, teacher or student.  Better still, perhaps,is the practice of reading it twice, once at the be?ginning of the discussion and once at the end,so the sound of the poem is the last thing one hears of it.

All discussions of poetry are,in fact, preparations for reading it aloud, and the reading of the poem is,final?ly,the most telling " interpretation" of it,suggesting tone, rhythm, and meaning all at once. Hearing a poet read the work in his or her own voice,on records or on film,is obviously a special reward. But even those aids to teaching cannot replace the student and teacher reading it or,best of all, reciting it.

I have come to think,in fact, that time spent reading a poem aloud is much more important than "analysing" it,if there isn't time for both. I think one of our goals as teachers of English is to have students love poetry. Poetry is "a criticism of life", and "a heightening (提升) of life". It is "an approach to the truth of feeling", and it "can save your life". It also deserves a place in the teaching of language and literature more central than it presently occupies.

I am not saying that every English teacher must teach poetry. Those who don't like it should not be forced to put that dislike on anyone else. But those who do teach poetry must keep in mind a few things about its essential nature, about its sound as well as its sense, and they must make room in the classroom for hearing poetry as well as think?ing about it.
