A Bite of China, featuring delicious Chinese food, has attracted countless viewers, and moves many people to tears.
A Bite of China is a serious documentary providing a unique view of Chinese as well as the relations between people and food and between people and society from the view of food. The touching documentary reminds some people of their mother, and makes some realize that every grain comes from hard and laborious work. Some people see patriotism (爱国精神) in the documentary, and some consider it a great cultural export.
How did this documentary achieve a great influence beyond its subject matter in such a short time?
"It is not empty propaganda (宣传) about China's splendid food culture. Instead,it shows the techniques used in making food and their production process as well as the lives of ordinary people, thus siriking a chord (共鸣) with the audi?ence ,"an Internet user said. The success of the documentary should be owed to sincerity and reality. Nowadays, many works of art that have high investment, high technology, and magnificent scenes lack nothing but sincerity and reality.
A Bite of China shows that a commercial documentary promoting patriotism can be full of touching details, that the emotions of ordinary Chinese people should be ex?hibited even in publicizing (宣传) China overseas, and that even a completely com?mercial programme can achieve both artistic and commercial success.
"We made this documentary with our respect and love for food," said director Chen Xiaoqing. Being sincere is the most important thing for artists because they cannot move others unless they themselves are first moved, and cannot convince others unless they themselves are first convinced. Sincerity is the "secret" for making this documentary so popular, and every cultural creator should learn from its success.

"HIV/AIDS has come knocking on everyone's door," says 17-year-old Yetarik,a member of the Anti-AIDS Association " Tabor Wegagan" in Awassa, south central Ethiopia. But when Yetarik and other members of the association try to provide information about HIV infection, they still face hostility (敌意) from some people. "They blame us for having HIV and for its spread," Yetarik says. "Every time 1 am faced with this attitude,I know that we have to work even harder." Tabor Wegagan was founded six years ago by a group of young people who wanted to tell other children about the disease destroying their country. They began by practising what they lecture. "All 20 of us decided to have ourselves tested for HIV to prove our own condition and to be an example for other youth to follow," says Yetarik. Then, with help from a local nongovernmental organization, the association trained "peer educators" to spread the word about HIV among young people. Each of these peer educators is responsible for gathering a group of five to ten adolescents and sharing information about HIV twice a week for a period of two months. The association also creates and performs plays on subjects related to HIV/ AIDS,such as the discrimination (歧视) HIV-positive people face in Ethiopia. And it runs a football team and a small circus, which both present more opportunities to spread awareness about the epidemic and fight against stigma (耻辱) . "Our goal is not only to equip young people with the knowledge and skills that are needed to survive this epidemic, but also to foster a more tolerant and caring community that does not simply abandon unfortunate victims out of ignorance and fear," says Yetarik.
