Last month I had a meeting in Seattle,so I decided to bring the whole family and make a trip out of it. We had always wanted to take the train down the coast, so we decided this was the perfect opportunity. We flew up to Seat?tle, had a few fun days to explore the city and then boarded a train in Seattle in the morning.

We arrived at the train station about 25 minutes before the train left. There were only a few other people in line,so getting on the train was so easy. Within 5 minutes of arriving we were settled in our sleeper cabin. The family sleeper cars felt spacious(宽敞的) .

The scenery was beautiful and exciting. It was so great to sit next to the window and watch the country go by,which was very enjoyable. The train travelled all along the water as we headed south to Oregon. The best part about the train was that you could get up and walk around to do stuff, and ac?tually there was a lot of stuff to do. The service on the train was worth men?tioning. Everything was served in a way as if you were at a restaurant.

When it was time to sleep, the agent helped us fold down our beds into double bunk beds(双层铺位) .I didn't get a picture of this, but it felt com?fortable.

We had a great experience and have even been talking about taking a train trip across the country sometime.

The "invasion(人侵) ”of English words into the Chinese language must be stopped, the country's senior translator says.

Huang Youyi? of the International Federation of Translators, one of the country's largest publishers, says words such as OK, bye-bye? nice, modern and guitar are coming into everyday Chinese and causing problems. Mr Huang said, "If we do not pay attention and if we do not take measures to stop Chi?nese being mixed with English,Chinese will no longer be a pure language. For example, the words DV   D.MP3 and CEO are used often in Chinese... But these imported terms can cause   confusion.”

Mr Huang fears the increasing flow of English words into Chinese conver?sation could endanger the language. "In the long run,Chinese will lose its role as an independent language for communicating information and expressing hu?man feelings," he said.

China has struggled to integrate the flow of Western culture as it has opened up and modernized. Only 20 foreign films are allowed to be screened in cinemas each year, and a lot of websites, including YouTube,Facebook and Twitter, have been banned. But Western brands(品牌) have spread widely,English-language television shows are widely available and many students want to study English.

Mr Huang said, "Some of our people think that using foreign words is a sign of being open-minded and international. I do not think so. Instead,we should have confidence in our own language. You cannot expect others to re?spect you unless you respect yourself.”

But Gu Yueguo,of the Institute of Linguistics at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said,"If we cleaned out all the borrowed words, less than half of modern Chinese would be left. Borrowing words from other languages is happening all over the world. It is a positive sign of cultural exchange and as-similation(吸收) .There is no way that China can close the door.”
