Four ways to be a great room-mate

Having a room-mate can be one of the best experiences in college or, easily, one of the worst. 9 Follow these tips to avoid the common mistakes that turn good room-mate rela?tionships sour.

Talk things out.

Communication is key. If something happens, sit down with your room-mate and have a face-to-face conversation. I've seen room-mate relationships fall apart because some?thing happens and, instead of talking to each other, the two start complaining about their room-mates behind their backs. 10

Don't expect to be best friends.

Some room-mates become the best of friends, and some don't. Don't put pressure on yourself or your room-mate, es?pecially when you first meet. 11 And if your room-mate doesn't end up being your best friend, don't worry.

Ask before you take.

This applies to food, clothes and anything else. If you want to keep a relationship going, show your room-mate that you have respect for what is his or hers by asking first. 12

Clean up after yourself.

This should go without saying. Don't be lazy. Or, at least, don't bury your room-mate in your clothes and gar?bage. Most people I've come across in college are messy.

13 But being considerate with where you put your stuff will help you avoid conflict.

A. So you need to think twice before you help your room-ma?te out.

B. This creates nothing but awkward situations and unhappi-ness.

C. Even if you both agree to share everything, you should still ask.

D. You don't have to clean your room and keep it organized all the time.

E. It all starts with you to have a good relationship with your room-mate.

F. Sometimes you get stuck with someone who has tons of negative energy.

G. Remember, you're trying to make a new friend, not to scare your room-mate away.

Raised in a motherless home, my father was extremely tight-fisted towards us children. His attitude didn't soften as I grew into adulthood and went to college. I had to ride the bus whenever I came home. Though the bus stopped about two miles from home, Dad never met me, even in severe

weather. If I grumbled, he'd say in his loudest father-voice, "That's what your legs are for!"

The walk didn't bother me as much as the fear of walk?ing alone along the highway and country roads. I also felt less than valued that my father didn't seem concerned about my safety. But that feeling was cancelled one spring evening.

It had been a particularly difficult week at college after long hours in labs. I longed for home. When the bus reached the stop, I stepped off and dragged my suitcase to begin the long journey home.

A row of hedge (树篱)edged the driveway that climbed the hill to our house. Once I had turned off the highway to start the last lap of my journey, I always had a sense of relief to see the hedge because it meant that I was almost home. On that particular evening, the hedge had just come into view when I saw something grey moving along the top of the hedge, moving towards the house. Upon closer observation, I realized it was the top of my father's head. Then I knew, each time I'd come home, he had stood behind the hedge, watching, until he knew I had arrived safely.  I swallowed hard against the tears. He did care, after all.

On later visits* that spot of grey became my watchtow-er. I could hardly wait until I was close enough to watch for its secret movement above the greenery. Upon reaching home, I would find my father sitting innocently in his chair. "So! My son, it's you!" he'd say, his face lengthening into pretended surprise.

I replied, "Yes, Dad. It's me. I'm home.,,

Martha Graham, born in 1894s was one of the most fa?mous dancers and creators of dance, whose influence on dance has been compared with the influence Picasso had on the mod?ern visual arts, Stravinsky had on music, or Frank Lloyd Wright had on architecture. She created almost two hundred dance pieces. She is often called the Mother of Modern Dance.

Earlier in her life, however, Martha did not know that she would become a dancer. At that time, the dancers were looked down on. So Martha's parents didn't approve of her desire to dance at the beginning. In 1916, she began her stud?ies at the newly created Denishawn School of Dancing and Re?lated Arts, founded by Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn, where Graham worked very hard to improve her ability to dance because she was considered too old to begin dancing.

In 1936, Graham made her defining work, Chronicle which signalled the beginning of a new era in modern dance. The dance brought serious issues to the stage for the general public in a dramatic manner. Influenced by the Wall Street Crash of 1929, the Great Depression that followed, and the Spanish Civil War, it focused on depression and isolation, re?flected in the dark nature of both the set and costumes.

Graham continued to dance when past the age of seven?ty. Once again* she met with criticism from people who came to watch her shows. But she didn't give up. Her last comple?ted ballet was 1990's Maple Leaf Rag. A Dancer's Life is an introduction to Graham and her work. It tells about her dances and her dance group and shows some of their meth?ods.

Martha Graham received many awards during her life?time, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1976. She was the first dancer to receive the country's highest civi卜ian honour. She died in 1991 at the age

of ninety-six. In 1998, TIME magazine listed her as the "Dancer of the Centu?ry" and one of the most important people of the twentieth century.

A [2015 •河南八市重点高中教学质量监测] Around four years ago, I received a call from the princi?pal of our school as to the "Parents' View" talk the next morning. He asked me to speak to the group. After the call, my whole body became feverish and panicky. The time from his call to the next morning seemed like years. The whole night ? I could not sleep with many ominous apprehensions in mind. One of them was to call the principal with regret and tell him that I could not come. Finally, I gathered some cour?age. 1 thought, if I missed this opportunity, surely the school would never invite me again to any of their programmes.

I reached the school in time. Before my turn came, my whole body was trembling. When my turn came, I started speaking, my heartbeat increased and my mouth went dry. I wasn't even able to read the written speech properly. I was not aware of where I was standing and what I was reading. That was the day when I realized my biggest weakness―pub?lic speaking.

After my speech, I met with the principal and explained what had happened to me. He told me that this happened to everyone. Even great speakers faced the same thing when they started. He suggested that I come again next time.

Around one month later, I was invited to refer to a topic on motivation. This time I was feeling comfortable. My speech was appreciated not only by the principal as well as by the teachers, because I was able to get my idea across to them. They encouraged and praised my efforts.

After the speech was successfully delivered, I became more confident. I said to myself, "If I can speak in front of such a learned audience, like the principal who educates oth?ers, I can now speak in front of others, too."

I started delivering lectures in my plant, on various top?ics like self-motivation, personality development, personal excellence, spoken English and presentation skills. This has become a passion for me. I learned that everything is possible if we have the courage to take the first step.

  1. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

A.Practice makes a man a better speech maker

B.Public speaking makes a man embarrassed

C.Principal provides the best chances

2.The author had bad feelings before the speech because

A. he disliked the idea of giving a lecture

B.he had got a high fever before that

C.he regretted accepting the invitation

D.he feared he couldn't perform it properly

3.What does the underlined part "ominous apprehensions" in the first paragraph mean?

A.Unlucky opportunities.

B.Negative ideas.

C.Curious views.

D.Happy comments.

 4. What can we conclude from the passage?

A.Nothing is to be got without pains but poverty.

B.Knowledge makes humble, while ignorance makes proud.

C.A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

D.Necessity is the mother of invention.
