I met Billy the last summer before college. He was handsome and his irreverence(玩世不恭)was 1to me. We liked each other the first instant we met.2,I was a straight Astudent and my parents had high hopes for me to 3 an Ivy League(常春藤联盟)school.Billy did not4into the equality. We were in love nevertheless-that5teenage love.I still remember we had a plan for prom(舞会).It was understood that we had6about where we would dance and drink and party together.
This meant one thing to my parents-panic.And it grew as the7letters began to roll in. Of the eleven schools I applied to,nine accepted me. And one of them was Brown University-the Ivy League college 8,Rhode Island.
There was no9that I was drawn to Brown, but Billy (who had joined the army)was10down south and I had offers 11for me there, too. I was torn between my love for him and my family12
One week 13the start of school,my mother had a talk with me.She said I was eighteen years old and I had a14to make---one that went15beyond the choice of16to attend university.
In August,I17and drove north to Providence. It took several months to18that my life was moving on in a way that was completely different from Billy's,Brown changed my life, opening doors and giving me the19I now use to think,to learn and to write. Life is always about20it seems, and the older I get,the more I understand this. Still, there are times when I think of Billy because he taught me about love.

I first met Sean one summer day. He carried a bag 1with four clubs(球杆)  and some balls. He was a lot 2than other kids of his age. I heard he was 3from cancer. Still , he always seemed to be smiling whenever I would see him with his friends, trying to 4as far as he did.
A year or so passed and I hadn’t 5Sean .I had heard that his cancer was 6him. Still, his friends said he was going to come here before long.
7 enough , he was there the following week. I 8 that one of his friends was carrying Sean’s bag. I saw Sean was having a(n)9time trying to drive the ball. Sean hit his last ball as hard as his fragile body would10.It flew up to the green and was out of sight. One of his friends11Sean walk up to the green. It was a(n)12walk because the green was higher than the tee(发球区).
Suddenly I saw one boy pick up Sean’s ball and13it in the hole. Then he ran and14to look for his own ball.
When Sean finally got to the green, he looked 15 because he thought he hit it over .
Then he glanced in the hole. A smile 16his face! The boys looked at each other and said , “You can’t tell me it’s a hole-in-one!”
“No, really ! Look !” he said . They all acted 17and as I watched , I thought Sean looked like the 18 guy I had ever seen. I never saw Sean or his friends after that day.19it was then that I learned just what golf should be .
It’s not about what 20you get or how far you drive. It is about caring for the friends you play with and enjoying the time you have with them.

In the doorway of my home, I looked closely at my 23-year-old son, Daniel. In a few hours he would be flying to France to 1 a different life. It was a transitional(过渡的)time in Daniel's life. I wanted to 2 him some words of significance. But nothing came from my lips, and this was not the 3 time I had let such moments pass.
When Daniel was five, I took him to the bus stop on his first day of kindergarten. He asked, “What is it going to be like, Dad? Can I do it?” Then he walked 4 the steps of the bus and disappeared inside. The bus drove away and I said nothing. A decade later, a similar 5played itself out. I drove him to college. As I started to leave, I tried to think of something to say to give him 6and confidence as he started this new stage of life. Again, words 7 me.
Now, as I stood before him, I thought of those 8 opportunities. How many times have I let such moments 9? I don't find a quiet moment to tell him what they have 10 to me. Or what he might 11 to face in the years ahead. Maybe I thought it was not necessary to say anything.
What does it matter in the course of a lifetime if a father never tells a son what he really thinks of him? 12 as I stood before Daniel, I knew that it did matter. My father and I loved each other. Yet, I always 13 never hearing him put his 14 into words. Now I could feel my palms sweat and my throat tighten. Why is it so 15 to tell a son something from the heart?
My mouth turned dry, and I knew I would be able to get out only a few words clearly. “Daniel,” I said, “If I could have picked, I would have picked you.” That's all I could say. He hugged me. For a moment, the world 16, and there were just Daniel and me. He was saying something, but tears misted my eyes, and I couldn't understand what he was saying. All I was 17 of was the stubble(短须)on his chin as his face pressed 18 mine. What I had said to Daniel was 19. It was nothing. And yet, it was 20.

A Love Note To My Mom
When I was a little girl, I would often follow you as you modeled (做模特) for fashion magazine. It was years later that I finally understood what role modeling1in your life. I know little that you were2every penny you earned to go to3school.
I cannot thank you enough for4you told me one autumn afternoon when I was nine. After finishing my homework, I wandered into the dining room where you were buried5piles of law books. I was6.Why were you doing what I do—memorizing textbooks and studying for7? When you said you were in law school, I was more puzzled. I didn’t know Moms8be lawyers too. You smiled and said,“In life, you can do anything you want to do.”
Though I was young, your words kept9in my ears. I watched as you faced the10of completing your studies, starting companies with Dad, while still being a11and a Mom of five kids. I was tired just watching you12. With your wise words in my13 mind, I suddenly felt free to dream. My whole world14. I set out to live my life filled with15, seeing endless possibilities for personal achievements.
Your words became my motto. I16found myself in the position of being either the first (woman doctor in Maryland Rotary) 17one of the few women (top medical reporters) in my field. I gained strength every time I said , “Yes, I’ll try that.”
Encouraged by your18, I have forged ahead (毅然前行) with my life’s journey, less afraid to make mistakes, and19meeting each challenge. You did it, and now I’m20it. Sorry, got to run. So much to do, so many dreams to live.

My mother went 4 a mastectomy(乳房切除手术)to remove the cancerous cells. For a month after her surgery (外科手术) she was unable to do anything.

Those weeks passed slowly but in the end I had a new 12for my mom. I had never 13 all the things she does on a regular basis. Simple things like cleaning, cooking, laundry and bills really started to become great 14.
During this special period, I saw the amazing supportive group we have. My parents’ friends couldn’t have done 15 .They stopped by on a regular basis, cooked meals, and supplied us with anything we 16 .They let me know that we will always be there 17each other.
My mother is healthier now and back to her 18 activities. Our lives are busy but I am a little more willing to 19 around the house. I 20my mother’s ability to stay optimistic and I only hope that some day I can be lucky enough to be like her.

One fine afternoon I was walking along the Fifth Avenue, when I remembered that it was necessary to buy a pair of socks.I 1 the first sock shop that caught my eye, and 2, not more than 17, came forward. "What can I do for you, sir?" "I wish to 3 a pair of socks." 4 glowed. "Did you know that you had come into 5 in the world to buy socks?" I had not been 6 that, as my entrance had been accidental."Come with me,”"said the boy happily. He began to 7 down from the shelves box after box.
"8, boy, I'm going to buy only one pair!" "I know that, but I want you to see how beautiful these are.Aren't they wonderful?" There was 9 an expression of joy, 10 he were revealing(透露) to me the 11 of his religion.I became far more interested in him than in the socks."My friend,"said I, "if this is 12 the enthusiasm from freshness, and you can keep it up 13, in ten years you’ll own every sock in the United States."
My amazement at his pride in 14 will be understood by all who read this article. In many shops the customer has to wait for someone to 15 him.When 16 some clerk does notice you, you are made to feel as if you were interrupting him.17 possibly that very clerk who is now so 18 began his career with enthusiasm. The freshness 19; He became a mechanical salesman.
I’ve observed such change in the lives of so many men in so many occupations that I've come to the 20 that the fastest road to failure is to do things mechanically.

People do not analyse every problem they meet. Sometimes they try to remember a solution from the last time they had a 1 problem. They often accept the opinion or ideas of other people. Other times they begin to act without 2; they try to find a solution by trial and error. However, when all of these methods 3 , the person with a problem has to start analysing. There are six 4
5, the person must recognize that there is a problem. For example, Sam’s bicycle is broken, and he cannot ride it to class as he usually does. Sam must 6 that there is a problem with his bicycle.
Next the person must 7 the problem. Before Sam can repair his bicycle, he must know why it does not work. For example, he must 8 the parts that are wrong.
Now the person must look for 9 that will make the problem clearer and lead to  10 solutions. For example, suppose Sam 11 that his bike does not work because there is something wrong with the brakes. 12, he can look in his bicycle repair book and read about brakes, talk to his friends at the bike shop, or look at his brakes carefully.
After 13 the problem, the person should have several suggestions for a possible solution. Take Sam as an example 14, his suggestions might be: tighten or loosen the brakes; buy new brakes and change the old ones.
In the end, one 15 seems to be the solution to the problem. Sometimes the 16 idea comes quite 17 because the thinker suddenly sees something in a 18 way. Sam, for example, suddenly sees there is a piece of chewing gum stuck to a brake. He immediately hits on the solution to his problem: he must 19 the brake.
Finally the solution is 20. Sam does it and finds his bicycle works perfectly. In short he has solved the problem.

The world always makes way for the dreamer.
When I was twelve years old, my father took me to see Zig Zigler. I remember sitting in that dark hall listening to Mr. Zigler 1 everyone’s spirits up to the ceiling. I 2there feeling like I could do anything. When we got to the car, I turned to my father and said, “Dad, I want to 3 people feel like that.” My father asked me 4 I meant. “I want to be a motivational(激发积极性的)speaker just like Mr. Zigler,” I replied.  A(An)5 was born.
Recently, I began seeking my dream of motivating others. 6  a four-year relationship with Fortune 100 Company 6 as a sales-trainer and ending as a regional(地区的) sales manager, I left the company at the height of my 7.  Many people were 8 that I would leave after earning a six-figure income(收入). And they wondered9 I would risk everything for a dream.
I made my 10 to start my own company and leave my worryingless position(职位)after 11 a regional sales meeting. The vice-president of our company made a 12  that changed my life. He asked us, “If a god would offer you three wishes, what would they be?” After giving us a 13 to write down the three wishes, he then asked us, “Why do you need a 14 ?” I would never forget the power I felt at that moment. I realized that 15 I had accomplished in the past had prepared me for this moment. I was ready and didn’t need a god’s help to become a motivational speaker. A motivational speaker was 16 .
Having made that decision, I was immediately17_18. One week after I gave notice, my husband was laid off (下岗) from his job, and now we had no 19. But I held fast to my dream. The wonder really began to happen. In a short time my husband found a better job. And I was able to book several 20 engagements(业务)with new customers. I discovered the unbelievable power of dreams.
