Sneaker is a kind of shoe worn by many people all over the world. Some say that the word “sneaker” is another word for tennis shoe, 1  no one really knows where the word came from. 2 say it came from the old English verb “sneak”, which 3  moving silently and quickly. The only thing we are 4 is that when you put on a pair of sneakers, you 5  light-hearted, light-footed and ready to play.
Sneakers of some kind are used by 6  who play tennis, basketball, and other sports. New design has been made 7  for people who run slowly. But perhaps sneakers are 8  used by children in the United States. In fact American children of 9  ages would much rather play in sneakers than anything else, except perhaps 10  at all.
New York City once held a poetry contest (诗歌比赛) for children. The subject was only “sneaker”. Thousands of children sent in their 11  and praised the sneakers they love. One prize winner called 12  poem “The Sneaker and the World Peace”. “When everyone is wearing sneakers,” she said, “it will be impossible to 13.”
American school children can be seen every day 14 sneakers of all colours. They put them on in the morning and take them off 15. Sneakers are 16 washed. In fact the older and dirtier they are, the 17 loveable they are. When their sneakers wear out (穿破), children hate to throw them off. How do you explain the closeness between 18 ? Perhaps another young 19“A shoe is just a shoe,” he said. “But a sneaker is a 20.”

A Strange Greeting, a True Feeling. Last week I was invited to a doctor’s meeting at the Ruth hospital for incurables. In one of the wards a  patient, an old man, got up shakily from his bed and moved towards me. I could see that he hadn't long to1, but he came up to me and placed his right foot close mine on the floor.
“Frank!” I cried in astonishment. He couldn’t 2, as I knew, but all the time 3his foot against mine.
My 4 raced back more than thirty years to the 5 days of 1941, when I was a student in London. The 6was an air-raid shelter, in which I and about hundred other people slept every night. Two of the regulars were Mrs. West and her son Frank.
7 wartime problems, we shelter-dwellers got to 8each other very well. Frank West 9me because he wasn’t 10, not even at birth. His mother told me he was 37 then, but he had 11of a mind than a baby has. His “12—sounds of pleasure or anger and 13more. Mrs. West, then about 75, was a strong, capable woman, as she had to be, of course, because Frank 14on her entirely. He needed all the 15of a baby.
One night a policeman came and told Mrs. West that her house had been flattened by a 500-pounder. She 16nearly everything she owned.
When that sort of thing happened, the rest of us helped the 17ones. So before we 18that morning, I stood beside Frank and 19my right foot against his. They were about the same size. That night, then, I took a pair of shoes to the shelter for frank. But as soon as he saw me he came running and placed his right foot against mine. After that, his 20to me was always the same.

“All men are created equal” is one idea that nearly every American would agree upon.1they sometimes betray the idea in their daily lives, they have a deep faith2in some fundamental way no one is born superior to anyone else.
In the early years of American history, because titles of nobility(贵族) were forbidden, no3class system developed in the United States. Firmly believing that being born into a lower class would not4them from success and they would have a better chance in America, thousands of immigrants 5to leave the European societies, where their 6in life was determined7by the social class into which they were born. It was because the dreams of many of there immigrants were 8in their new country, though there might be9in some situations, that Americans came to believe in equality of opportunity.
Americans do not mean that everyone should be10equal when they say they believe in equality of opportunity.11, they do mean that each person should have an equal chance for success. Abraham Lincoln once said, “We wish to12the humblest(最微贱的) man an equal chance to get rich with everybody else. When one starts poor, free society is13that he knows he can 14his condition.”
However, competition is the price to be 15 for his equality of opportunity. Americans match their energy and intelligence against that of others in a competitive contest for success, because they believe competition16the best in any person. Indeed, the pressure of competition causes an American to be 17, but it also places a constant emotional stress on him. In fact, in a society that gives so much18 to those “winners”, 19does not compete successfully for whatever reason never20into it as well as those who do.

Mother used to ask me what the most important part of the body is. Through the years I would 1  at the correct answer. When I was younger, I thought 2 very important to us, so I said, “My ears, mum.” She said, “No, many people are 3 . But think about it and I’ll ask you again.”
Since making my first  4  , I had often thought over the question. So the next time I told her, “Mum, it must be our eyes.” She said, “You are 4  fast, but the answer isn’t correct because there are blind people.”

One morning, my son, Chilly, found a carpenterworm(毛毛虫) unexpectedly and put it in a jar. Each day he couldn’t 1 to visit the little guest. Few weeks later we discovered it 2 in a cocoon (茧).
Chilly surely knew a moth (蛾) or butterfly was about to be 3. He was 4 to know what gift nature was about to give him. Gradually we found it half transparent and we could 5 the wings of the unborn. Soon, a moth broke free, and then 6 eggs, completing its life cycle.
The next day, I 7 Chilly it was time to set it free. He took it 8 and opened the jar. It circled the yard twice, came back, and 9 on Chilly’s arm. He picked it up and threw it in the air. The moth repeated its  10 pattern. He tried over and over, but each time it would 11 to his arm so that Chilly had to give up.
The next day he attempted to set it free again, and after a few repetitions the moth finally12 into the grass.
Like a 13, I believe the moth was afraid to 14 what it was comfortable with. It wanted to stay with something  15, scared to move on and experience something unknown.
I was once that little moth. My cocoon was my mother’s 16, in which I was comfortable, and hated to fly too far away from it. I was 17 when my first job required me to move to a new city. Humans are creatures of 18. We resist change. However, if I hadn’t moved, I would not have experienced many 19 and wonderful things or met many of my friends. So each move gave me the 20 to learn and experience, but best of all, I met friends.

I thought my luck had run out at the end of the summer holiday. It was not the 1 of the new term that did it, but the 2 military training. My 3 nightmare(噩梦) had finally come true.
The weather was 4 hot when we were training. Sweat dropped from every part of my body. I 5 as if my mouth was going to catch fire. 6 was the only thing I could think about. It was the first time in my life that I have ever really felt 7.
However, we had to stand completely 8 all day. The drill-master(教官) were very strict with us. They only 9 us to sit directly on the ground for a few minutes. My heels ached and I had a blister(水泡) on my 10.
Believe me, this was not the most 11 part. What I couldn’t 12 most of all was the smell of the toilets. It left such a deep impression on me that I can almost smell it right now.I guess most of the other students 13 the same experience that I had. I often thought of giving up and going back home. 14, I didn’t.
One day, our PE teacher came to watch our 15 for a while. Then he 16 to join the national flag squad(队). “You movement is the best of all,” he praised me. It was so 17! I almost couldn’t believe my ears. It was a great honor to be chosen for the squad.
From that day on, I worked much harder than before because I knew I was going to 18 the national flag. Every Monday, thousands of eyes would be 19 on me. Now military training has finished and I have become a flag protector in my school. Every time I raise the flag, I know all my hard work has 20

Perhaps the only test score that I remember is the 41. I was in high school. The test was the final for the class. It was a rather 1test. I didn’t know how 2I had done but I knew there were things on 3that I didn’t know.
I remember 4 waiting for the result. When Mr. Bales5my paper on my desk, I was6 . There in big7numbers, circled to draw attention, was my grade — 41! I 8my paper so that others couldn’t see it. A 41 was not 9that you wanted your classmates to see. Finally, Mr. Bales stood behind the desk and 10the class. “The grades were not very good; 11of you passed,” he announced. “ The highest grade in the class was a 41, so all of you failed.”
A 41. That was me. Suddenly my dismal(阴沉的) face didn’t look quite so bad. I had the highest grade. I felt a lot12. As soon as I got home, my mother asked me, “How did you do on your test?” “I made a 41,” I said. My mother’s 13changed suddenly. “You failed.” “But I had the highest grade in the class!” I replied. “ I don’t 14what everyone else had. You failed. It doesn’t matter if everyone else failed too; what matters is what you do,” my mother15answered.
For years, I thought that was a harsh judgment. My mother was always that16. It didn’t matter what the other kids did; it only mattered what I did and17I did it excellently.
We often don’t understand the wisdom of good parents until we ourselves stand 18the parenting shoes. My mother’s philosophy(人生态度)has19 me throughout life. The path of the crowd is wide but the path to pass the tests of life is 20and there are very few people on it.

Years ago while lying in my hammock (吊床) and drinking JB from the bottle, I 1 my dog dragging something under the fence. 2 looking at it carefully, to my 3 , I realized it was the next-door neighbor’s 10-year-old daughter’s rabbit. For years I 4 her come home from school and 5 straight out to its cage, 6 it and play with it in the yard. I know today 7 be no different. 8 for our dog, I had to think fast.
The rabbit died and was quite dirty, as if it had 9 quite a struggle, so I washed it off with the plastic 10, combed it with the dog brush and blew it 11 with the leaf blower (吹风机) . Upon finishing its grooming (刷洗), I jumped the 12 and put it back in its cage hoping its 13 would be accepted as “ natural causes”.
14 to the hammock and JB. Within the hour the neighbor’s car 15 as usual and out came the little girl, 16 as usual she headed straight for the cage. Only this time did she stop about six feet away and 17 “ D-A-D-D-Y-!!”
Her father, 18, stood looking at the cage. Being the good neighbor, I rushed to the fence and asked if there was anything I could do.
Her father 19 than calmly shouted, “What kind of 20 person would dig up a little girl’s dead rabbit and put it back in its cage?”

The Pecan Thief
When I was six years old, I was visiting my grandfather's farm in Kansas. Grandpa had sent me into the1 to gather pecans for us to enjoy later.
Pecan picking was really2 work and my little basket was only half full. I wasn't about to3 Grandpa down. Just then something caught my4 . A large brown squirrel was a few feet away.  I watched as he picked up a pecan, hurried to a tree and   5 in a large hole in the trunk. A moment later the squirrel   6 out and climbed down to the ground to pick up another nut. Once again, he took the pecan back to his hiding place.
Not so7 anymore, I thought. I dashed over to the tree and looked into the hole. It was8 with pecans! Golden pecans were right there for taking. This was my9. Handful by handful, I scooped all of those pecans into my basket. Now it was full! I was so10 of myself. I couldn't wait to show Grandpa all the pecans.11, I ran back and shouted, “Look at all the pecans!” He looked into the basket and said, “Well, well, how did you find so many ? ” I told him how I'd12 the squirrel and taken the pecans from his hiding place.
Grandpa congratulated me on how smart I'd been in observing the squirrel and his habits. Then he did something that13 me. He handed the basket back to me and put his arm gently14 my shoulders.
“That squirrel worked very hard to gather his winter15 of food, ” he said. “Now that all of his pecans are gone, don't you think that little squirrel will16 the cold winter? ”
“I didn't think about that,” I said.
“I know, ” Grandpa said. “But a good man should never take17 of someone else's hard work.”
Suddenly I felt a bit18. The image of the starving squirrel wouldn't19 my mind. There was only one thing I could do. I carried the basket back to the tree and poured all the nuts into the hole.
I didn't eat any pecans that night, but I had something much more filling—the20 of knowing I had done just the right thing.

      impression

Last week, I took a sales class for female business owners. The1thing the instructor did was ask if anyone had been the victim of a2sales experience. Every person in the room3her hand.
When she knew details, we learned that the4situations had one thing in common. It5that whenever a class member had a bad sales experience, it involved the6promising something he wouldn’t or couldn’t deliver.
The example I7with the class was a current one. I bought a summer membership at our community pool8because it advertised a lovely baby pool to which I could escape with my active one and four year-olds. However, every time I’ve used the pool this summer, the baby area has been9. Too much chlorine(氯气),10one manager.
I’m sure the pool director was very apologetic that his11had been inconvenienced, and that’s nice, but the12is that I did not get what I paid for. When the baby pool was closed, I had to swim with my     13  in the adult pool, which did not     14  me the control I wanted and as such, was quite stressful. I would have rather stayed home.
The pool has     15 a customer. I will not be buying a pass next summer.
In work and in life, it is really important not to16something you can’t deliver, because at best, it will improve your17 . At worse, you could lose your job.18, before you assure a co-worker or customer that you can get something done, make sure that your boss or someone higher-up isn’t going to step in and force you to19your plan. You are not God, so don’t lead people to believe that you20the universe.
