"I'll be away for the whole evening, and I'll leave you to look after the house. In the cupboard there are two bottles filled with 5. Be careful about it. You'll be killed if you take even a 6 of it. There is also some meat and chicken in the cupboard. Take care of them". 7 these words the rich man left the home.

It is interesting how NASA(美国航空航天管理局)chose their astronauts for landing them on the moon. They chose men 1 the age of twenty and thirty-five. There were about fifty of them, Many were 2 air pilots. 3were scientists with two or three degrees. NASA telephoned each man they were going to choose; told him the plans and the 4 they might get in. They then asked him if he was willing to be trained as an astronaut. “How could any man 5such an exciting job?” One of them said, “Dangerous? Of course. It’s dangerous 6most exciting”
The health and physical condition of 7was, of course, very necessary. 8 those in very good health and physical condition were chosen.
While being trained to be astronauts. They went through many 9They studied the star and the moon, and they also studied geology, the science of rocks. This was necessary 10 astronauts would have to look for rocks on the moon. They would try to find rocks which might help to tell the 11of the moon. They were all 12to fly in helicopters (直升飞机)。These helicopters landed 13down to give them some experience of the way the spaceship would 14land on the moon , They were also taught the 15 facts about the conditions in space. They learnt all the technical details of the spaceships and rockets. They visited the scientists and engineers who 16them. They visited the factories where they were 17 They learnt how every18of a space-ship and its instruments work. They also learnt every detail of ground-control 19

When I was 8, a gentleman came to my orphanage(孤儿院)and taught us how to do woodworking projects. I remember my first project—a small table. I was so 1 of it that I looked upon it 2 I had created a wonder. It was absolutely beautiful and it had taken me six weeks to 3 it. I could 4 wait to give it to Mother Winters as a gift. She was the head mistress of our orphanage, who was always 5 with us.
As the tables were not 6 from the clear coating, the man told us to wait a few days before taking them to our dormitories. 7 I was just so excited and happy that I couldn’t wait. I dashed out like a flash carrying my table, smiling from ear to ear.
When I reached the dormitory I placed the little table beside my bed. I was 8 it when Mother Winters entered. She walked over to the table. Running her hand 9 it, she noticed it was still wet.
“Were you 10 to bring this home?” she asked. “No, ma’am,” I 11 with my head down.
She ordered me to throw the table out and so I did. After she left, I immediately opened the door to get it back. There was 12 stuck all over. I brushed and cried, but it would not come off. I hid the table in my closet and never 13 it. A year later while cleaning up, I gave the table to Mother Henderson, my houseparent (宿管员), thinking that she would 14 it away.
Thirty years later at a reunion, I 15 that Mother Henderson was living nearby, so I drove up to see her. We talked cheerfully for long. As I was about to leave, she asked me to come down to her 16 to get something important. I followed her 17 into a dark corner. She picked something up. 18 she turned around, I could see that she was holding a little table. Mother Henderson kept the little table that I had given up for lost so long ago.
Today, I look at that table with bittersweet memories but full of 19 to Mother Henderson, who kept it for a young orphan who tried very hard to 20.

A man wanted to study medicine but couldn’t make up his mind. He went to ask his friend, “Is it 1 for me to study it now? I’ll be 44 after 4 years of college.” His friend said to him, “Why not?Four years later you will be 44 whether or not you go to college.” He 2 about it for a night and got the idea. The next day he went to sign at the college.
One of my friends, Jim, did 3with somebody else a few years ago. Their ship got   4in the storm at sea and their hope, together with their goods 5 suddenly. Jim was so 6by the blow that he became low-spirited and couldn’t 7 focus his attention on his work. While his 8who suffered the same catastrophe (灾难) never 9. His day went on as colorfully as before. My friend asked him how he could 10it. He said, “When you complain, and feel sad, life goes on as usual; when you are happy and 11yourself, the world runs as usual. Which do you 12?”
That’s how a person leads his life. When you are 13and in a good mood, your future seems sunny and bright. 14, when you are worried and have something sad in your 15, your future will turn dark. The latter situation will cost you a great deal 16 you allow it to last. You will 17 the joyful things.

When I was a sixth grader, kids were separating into groups, but I wasn't sure where I belonged.
Our teacher gave us a task called "secret friends" for the coming week.We were supposed to do nice things1our friends without letting them know who was doing it.We could leave2notes or cards either on their desks or in their backpacks. Before doing the task, with our eyes closed, from a basket, we3 a name of a classmate who we were to secretly befriend over the next five days.
Soon, the task was turned into a competition of giving4 instead of notes.Everyone was getting cool presents except me.My friend followed the teacher's5without a fault.I received nothing but handmade cards with nice words about me.
On the last morning, I finally got a package. When I 6it, the girls around all7.It was perfumed powder, an "old lady" gift.My face went red.
I tried to forget about the8gift, but when the same girls9it again during the break in the bathroom, I joined in, "How stupid! My grandmother wouldn't 10 want it." The girls laughed at my 11and filed out of the bathroom.Washing my hands, I let the water run through my fingers12  I thought about my words. It wasn't13like me to say things like that.
"I'm your secret friend." It was Rochelle." I' m sorry about the gift," she whispered to me, tears 14 down her face.
From a poor family, she was a15at school for those with rich parents.Yet she just took all the 16and the horrible treatment silently.
I was sick to my stomach as my17words ran through my mind. She had heard everything. How could I have been so cruel?
Later I learned she had felt bad all week about not being able to leave me any cool present and her mum had given up her only luxury(奢侈品)
And I had 18 everything for her.
I told her that I had only said those things to try to19.
"We aren't that different from each other, are we?" She smiled 20.Her simple words, spoken from her heart, found their way straight into mine.

My friends and I had just finished lunch at a hotel when it started to pour 1 . When it became lighter, I decided to get my car, which was 2 at my office three streets away.
My friends argued that I shouldn’t go, mainly because I was seven months pregnant then. I assured them that I’d be very 3.
I walked out of the 4and started making my way to the car. At the traffic junction, a van stopped and the passenger got off with an umbrella. Before I knew what was happening, he walked right beside me and told me he’d escort(护送) me to my 5 . I was very embarrassed and declined(辞谢), but he was very 6.
During our 7 , he kept telling me to walk slower, as the ground was 8 . When we got to the car park, I 9 him and we parted ways. I did not get his 10 and may not even recognise him now. Did he 11 stop for me? I’ll never know.
So how did I pay it forward? I was at home when I 12 two Indian construction workers walking in the heavy rain. They were probably on their way to the construction 13 near my estate, which was a long walk in. I went out and passed them an umbrella. I told them they should take the umbrella and 14 it. They were very grateful and like me, probably wondered why a 15 was offering such kindness.

Signs can sometimes be seen at the entrance of a house, expressing that a tramp(流浪汉)has passed. This special sign-language is frequently 1  by tramps to inform their  2  whether the host of a certain house is friendly or unfriendly, and to 3 them the trouble of making unnecessary calls.
Quite 4  one day, I came across a real tramp. He was such a rare sight these days that I stood some distance away and watched him. He was dressed just as a tramp should be in, old worn trousers, and a jacket many sizes too big for him. On his head there was a battered old hat and his boots were so old and worn; they were almost coming into pieces.
But the man himself looked cheerful as if he had not a 5 in the world. He rubbed his nose with his forefinger,  6 a funny turn, laid a small parcel  7  the front gate, and began 8 a sign made by a former caller. Although the sign was meaningless to me, it must have been 9 , for the tramp’s face lit up with satisfaction. He entered the front gate 10  and rang the bell. When the door opened, I saw him raise his hat 11  couldn’t hear his words. The 12  was very short indeed, for no sooner had he spoken a few words than the door closed fiercely in his face.
I felt 13  for him as he walked sadly out of the house. But just as quickly, his face lit up again and he moved quickly towards the gate. There he stopped, looked at the sign, and shook his head seriously as if he had made a bad mistake. 14  deeply into his pockets, he produced a piece of chalk, rubbed out the existing sign and made a new one in its place. He stared at it for a moment smiling to himself, then gathered his belongings, pushed back his hat and began walking towards the next house at an unhurried 15 , whistling as he went along.

I grew up in a small town and the main entertainment was Friday night high school football. It was just a sleepy little town where parents wanted to raise their children away from 1 and danger of a big city, and where teenagers like me2leaving to find something bigger and better.
All that 3 one summer night. My friend Lisa, Kim and Tyler held a party for my eighteenth birthday at Lisa’s house. As they kept 4alcohol to me, I was pretty drunk. I asked Tyler to take me home. With some5 , we made it out to his car and drove home. News came next morning. Kim, my friend 6we were five years old, was killed in a car accident. That night after Tyler and I left, Kim, who was7more drunk than me, got into her car and 8 towards the highway to go home, She was driving on the wrong side of the road and never saw the truck coming. The driver didn’t see her 9to avoid the car. They hit head on. Kim died immediately, and the driver was thrown 10the truck windshield(挡风玻璃)and died a week later.
Whenever I 11back on that day, I can’t help thinking that it was my 12to drink so much that night, otherwise things would be different. I know Kim 13the choice to drink and drive that night , but a part of me will always feel 14for what happened.
I may not change the 15with my story, but I do hope that I can make people16the responsibility that they have to themselves and others by 17it. My mother really knows how to get others to do what she suggests. Besides my father, her neighbors and even a stranger in a grocery store, has fallen under her 1.
One day we were shopping in a supermarket. When we were passing by the baby aisle(过道), she 2a young mother browsing through different brands of powdered milk. Her baby was playing with a toy. My mother 3babies so she went up to the woman and chatted with her.
My mother is an easy person to like. She has the kindest eyes in the world, so it isn’t 4
to trust her. She 5with the baby a little bit and told the woman about how I used to be cute at that age, too. They laughed together.
The woman was about to put Brand X Milk Powder in her cart when my mother suggested Brand Y 6because it obviously had better vitamins. Would you believe the woman actually
7     brands just like that?
She really does know how to influence people. But what about her getting other people to
8    whatever she tells them?
My father and I actually had a long conversation about her 9on how to influence people. According to my father, my mother is just a really likeable person, and she has10been
like that, even when he first met her. Chatting people up is natural for her.
During our conversation, I realized that what my mother has is the 11to build rapport(亲善) with other people. With rapport comes12. People are more likely to be influenced by those who they think understand their viewpoints or share their opinions.
