Two weeks before Christmas a nine-year-old girl was walking with her friend down the street, sliding on the ice. They were talking about what they hoped to1at Christmas.
They stopped to talk to an old man named Harry, who was 2 his knees pulling weeds from around a large tree. His fingers were 3 with cold.
As Harry responded to the girls, he told them he was getting the yard 4as a Christmas present to his mother, who had died several years before. His eyes filled with tears as he 5 the tree and said, “ My mother was all I had. She loved her 6and her trees, so I do this for her at Christmas.” His words7 the girls and soon they were on their knees helping him to 8 around the trees. It took the three of them the rest of the day to complete the 9. When they finished, Harry pressed a quarter into each of their hands. “I wish I could 10you more, but it’s all I’ve got right now,” he said.
As they walked they remembered that the house was 11, with no flowers, no Christmas tree or other decorations. Just the 12figure of Harry sitting by his curtainless window. The next day they agreed to put their 13 in a jar marked “Harry’s Christmas Present” and then they began to seek for small jobs to 14 more. Every nickel, dime, and quarter they earned went into the 15.
Two days before Christmas, they had enough money to buy new 16 and a Christmas card. On Christmas Eve they came to Harry’s 17 singing carols. When he opened the door, they 18 him with the gloves wrapped in pretty paper, the card and a pumpkin pie still 19from the oven. With trembling hands, he20 the paper from the gloves, and then to their astonishment, he held them up to his face and wept.

We have completed our first month of preschool. Matthew seems to 1 it. He is catching on to the routine quite nicely. I didn’t leave him there 2 much the first couple weeks. I am finding if I’m not there he behaves much better.
In this class a little German boy, who does not speak 3,cried all the time at first and now cries occasionally.
The Monday of the second week the little fellow just cried and cried. He was sitting 4 Matthew. I thought Matthew was going to start 5 and join in. I stood by and watched, ready for the rescue. Matthew kept turning around and 6 the boy. Then he reached his hand back and 7 him on the leg. He was comforting the boy! Later Matthew was playing with a 8 and the boy with blocks. Actually he was just standing by and crying. Matthew drove his truck over to the blocks, 9 it, picked up a few of the blocks and started handing them to 10. They then together started 11 towers on the table and the little boy 12 crying.It seemed 13 Matthew knew what the little guy needed. Here was the little guy,who can’t speak English, and Matthew, who 14 playing together, like they were best 15.
One of the days when I stayed, they were at lunch and Matthew was 16 at the table. I pulled up a chair to sit next to him.He smiled, then grabbed his book bag and took off running 17 the cafeteria.I took off after him. When we reached the wall he just giggled (咯咯笑),turned around and looked at me. I bent 18 to blame him for leaving his seat and running. He suddenly 19.All I could do was to take his hand and 20 him back to his seat. Then I turned my back and couldn’t help laughing.

To celebrate the end of our exams, my friends and I went to a fast food restaurant. We 1 hamburgers and Coca Colar at the counter. When our 2 came, I started walking towards an empty table.  By  bad luck, my purse strap(带子) got 3 on a chair and the tray(托盘that I was holding slipped 4 my hands and went flying in the air. The tray, and its contents, 5 on a man who was just about to 6 a bite of his sandwich. I stared, greatly 7, as the drinks soaked (浸湿) his white shirt.
Then I 8 my eyes and prepared myself for his burst of 9. Instead, he said “It’s OK” to 10 me before he disappeared into washroom.
Still shaky and unsure 11 to do next, my friends and I went to a table and sat there, trying our best to look 12 . A moment later, the man came out of the washroom and 13 our table. My heart almost stopped 14. I though he was going to ask for my father’s 15 and call him.
To my surprise, he merely smiled at us, handed us some cash and said, “16 yourself new hamburgers.” He then wa lked 17 without even finishing his food. He could have made what was already an uncomfortable situation worse, 18 he chose a different way and gave us a reason to believe that there is still 19 in this world. I’ll never 20 his actions.

My name is Nick Vujicic, an Australian who was born without any limbs(四肢). In recent years one of my most 1videos on YouTube shows my skateboarding, surfing, playing music, and best of all, 2hugs from all fields of great people.
All in all, those are pretty ordinary 3that just about anyone can do, right? So 4do you think that video has been viewed millions of times? My theory is that people are 5to watch it because in spite of my physical limitations, I’m living 6I had no limits.
People often think someone 7a severe disability to be inactive, upset, maybe even crazy. But I’d like to 8them by showing that I lead a very adventurous and fruitful life
Among the hundreds of 9on that video, here’s one typical remark:” seeing a guy like this being happy makes me wonder why I feel 10for myself sometimes -or feel not funny enough, or whatever. How can I 11think thoughts like that when this guy is living without limbs and still being happy!?”
I found happiness when I realized that imperfect 12I may be, I am the perfect Nick Vujicic. I’m designed 13God’s plan. That’s not to say that there isn’t 14for improvement. I’m always trying to be better so I can better 15the world!
I do believe my life has no 16. I want you all to feel the same way about your life, no matter what your challenges may be. As we 17our journey together, please take a moment to 18about any limitations you’ve placed on your life. Now think about what 19would be like to be 20of those limitations. What would your life be if anything were possible?

Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi for a living. One time I arrived in the middle of the night for a pickup at a building that was 1 except for a single light in a ground floor window. I walked to the door and knocked.
A small woman in her 80’s opened the door. I took her suitcase to the cab then returned to 2 her into the cab. She thanked me for my kindness. When we got in the taxi, she gave me a(n)3 , then asked, “Could you drive through downtown ?”
“It’s not the 4 way,” I answered.
“Oh, I don’t mind,” she said. “I’m in no hurry. I’m on my way to a hospice (临终关怀医院).”
I looked in the rear view mirror. Her eyes were glistening.
“The doctor says I don’t have very long.”
I quietly reached over and 5 the meter (计程器). “What 6 would you like me to take?” I asked.
For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked as an elevator operator. We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived. Sometimes she’d ask me to 7 in front of a particular building or corner and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.
As the sun was 8, she suddenly said: “I’m tired. Let’s go now.”
We drove in 9 to the address she had given me. There were people waiting for her and they put her in a wheelchair.
“How much do I have to pay you?” she asked, reaching into her purse.
“Nothing,” I said.
Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly.
“You gave an old woman a little moment of 10,” she said.
I squeezed her hand, then walked into the dim morning light. Behind me, a door shut.
I didn’t 11 any more passengers that shift. I drove aimlessly, lost in thought. We tend to think that our lives revolve around great moments. But great moments often 12us unconsciously.

      puzzle

It was lunchtime and I walked into a small branch bank on the West Side. I had come to 1 a checking account. The only officer on 2 was a fortyish black man, standing 3 a small counter from a young white boy who was wearing a V-necked sweater. I thought I was especially 4 of the boy because he looked more like from a prep school than a 5 in a West Side bank.
The boy continued to 6 my attention because of what happened next. He was holding an open savings-account book and 7 an expression of disappointment. “But I don’t understand. I opened the account myself, so why can’t I 8 any money?” the boy said, his voice breaking.
“I know it is, but those are the rules. I’ve already explained to you that a fourteen-year-old is not 9 to withdraw money without a letter from his parents,” the officer explained patiently.
Suddenly I noticed the 10 had a series of small deposits (存款) and withdraws. Then I questioned the officer, “How do you 11 that? Why did you let him withdraw money before, but not now?” He looked 12. “Because the tellers were not aware of his age before and now they are. It’s really very 13.” I turned to the boy with a shrug. “You’re really getting 14,” I said. “You ought to get your parents to come here and protest.” The boy looked destroyed. 15, he put his savings book in a rear-pocket and walked out of the bank.
The officer turned to me. “You know,” he said, “you really shouldn’t have got 16.” I couldn’t believe what he was saying. “We were 17 this morning that some neighborhood bully has been shaking down (敲诈) this boy for more than a month. The guy was 18 him to take money out every week and hand it over. The poor kid was 19 too scared to tell anyone. Anyway, the police are on the case and they’ll probably make a(n) 20 today.”
“You mean there is no rule about being too young to withdraw money from a savings account?”
“Not that I ever heard of. Now, sir, what can we do for you?”

When I was 8, a gentleman came to my orphanage(孤儿院) every week to lead us in woodworking projects. I remember the night that I finished my first project. It was a small table and I looked upon it as though I had created a life. I could 1 wait to give it to Mother Winters, our orphanage’s leader, as a 2.
Since the tables’ coating was still 3, the man asked us to wait a while before taking our tables to our dormitories. But I couldn’t wait. I dashed out the door in a 4, carrying my table, smiling from ear to ear.
“It is very pretty,” Mother Winter smiled at me. When she touched the coating she noticed that it was still wet. Then she asked me why I had brought. I stood with 5 down. “Were you supposed to bring this home?” she asked. “No, ma’am, ” I said.
Mother Winters kicked the table over and all of the legs were 6 off. She made me throw the table outside. After Mother Winters left, I went out to get my little table. There was dirt all over it. 7 silently, I hid the ruined table in my closet. A year later I gave it to Mother Henderson, my houseparent, to 8.
Thirty years later I learned Mother Henderson was living in Asheville, North Carolina, so I drove up to see her. She gently asked me to come down to her basement and help her get something 9. “Do you remember that?” she asked, 10 into a dark corner. I did. I could not speak for fear of crying. “Roger, I want you to 11 it.” Mother Henderson gave me back the little 12 that I had given up for lost so long ago. She had kept it, never 13 if she would see me again.
Today, I look at the table with bittersweet memories. I think of when Mother Winters forced me to throw it away. But I am also 14 and joyful at the kindness of Mother Henderson, who kept it as a remembrance of a young orphan who tried very hard to 15.

My partner and I were staying in Beruwela on the Southwest coast of Sri Lanka when the tsunami(海啸) hit. We 1 from the first floor of our hotel. At that time, a wall of water swept in and tore the ground floor apart underneath us. 2 to be moved out to Colombo was very frightening because everyone was afraid that another and possibly bigger 3 would come. At one stage we heard that another wave was coming and there was 4. Surprisingly, a fleet of small vehicles driven by local people arrived outside the hotel and we just 5 a minibus.
We were taken up a hill to a place of 6 where we were welcomed by a family who told us that we could stay as 7 as we needed to. Among all this death and 8, these people were trying to help us! We were shown to the local Mosque where hundreds of locals were cooking, collecting and distributing food and supplies for those less 9. In the three days we were waiting to leave, we saw many examples of ordinary Sri Lankans, many of whom had lost friends, 10 and livelihoods(生计,谋生方式), trying to help others who were worse off. It was a very moving experience.
We have since been 11 the family who took us in and they are saying that what their country needs most urgently is practical help, doctors, nurses and medicines, helping to 12 roads and rebuilding electricity and water supplies. These people would have done anything to help us, it is time for the British Government to do more to help them.

Had I believed in my early grades instead of myself,I would have allowed my fear of 19 to defeat my enthusiasm and damage my creativity. 20,I viewed my younger self as an “A” English student, except for that undeserved “D”.
