I was late for the school bus and rushing to get ready. My dog, Tippy, got to the front door and lay down in front of it – his way of asking to be petted. I1his begging for affection (喜爱), and ran for the waiting bus.
2, that afternoon, when I came home, Mom said to me3, “Honey, I have some4news that I need to tell you. This morning, while you were at school, Tippy was hit by a car and5. I’m so sorry.”
“No! It’s not true!” I was6. I couldn’t believe her. “Tippy, come here! Come on, boy!” I called and called for him. I waited. He didn’t come. Feeling7, I wandered into the living room. I didn’t cry that night. I still couldn’t believe that he was8.
When I got off the bus the next day, the silence at home was deafening.9, my sobs (哭泣) erupted (喷发) like lava (熔岩) from a volcano. I couldn’t stop10. I hadn’t even petted him when I left11could I have known that was my last chance? I cried until I felt empty inside.
Time passed, and against my will, I started to12some things. I realized what little control any of us have over what happens 13 a dog. We can do everything right, but14things can still happen. But good things can happen too. That’s15. The best way to deal with the hard times is to understand what you16and get them through when they come, and to remember that hard times always17.
I now deeply understand the “circle of life”. Everyone is born, everyone18, and that’s the way it is. If dogs never died, there would be no19for others like Belle – my new dog.
Best of all, I realized that Tippy20all of my old memories of him. And they come to me every time I call!

I once had a teacher whose husband died suddenly of heart attack.About a week after his death, she 1 some of her thoughts with a classroom of students. As the late afternoon sunlight shone 2 the classroom windows, and when the class was nearly over, she 3 a few things aside on the edge of her desk and sat down.
With a 4 look on her face, she paused and said,“5 class is over,I’d like to share with all of you a deep 6 which I feel is very important. Each of us is put here on 7 to learn, share, love, appreciate and give of ourselves.8 of us knows when this fantastic experience will 9.It can be taken away at any moment.Perhaps this is the God’s 10 of telling us that we must make the 11  of every single day.”
Her eyes were beginning to 12,but she went on,“So I would like you all to make me a 13:From now on,on your way to school,or on your way home, find something beautiful to 14.It doesn't have to be something you see.It could be a 15 of freshly baked  bread  floating  out  of  someone’s house,  or  it  could  be  the  sound  of  the soft 16 rustling(沙沙作响)the leaves in the trees….Please look for these things, and 17  them,for at anytime it can all be taken away.’’
The class was completely 18.We all picked up our books and went out of the room silently. That 19,I observed many more beautiful things on my way home from school than usual.
Remember:Life is not 20 by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

I’d been 16 for six days and was already prepared to deal with failure.
I remember that, when my mum 1 me that morning, her voice wasn’t as screaming as it usually was. She had been 2 for more than one hour getting everything ready, and I could feel she was 3 me at the same time.
I stayed in bed for a few minutes. I was 4 to leave its warmth and 5 to face the suffering that I’d rather let myself forget for the past months. Finally, I dragged myself 6.
The first thing I thought of after getting up was to 7. I went to the kitchen and prepared a breakfast that was fairly 8, but was still too big for my appetite that day. I kept telling myself that I 9eat. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and this wasn’t a(n) 10 day. Besides maybe it would 11 me a little. But I doubted it. I left the kitchen because even the 12 made me feel sick.
I finished getting ready and tried to settle down. It didn’t 13, so I decided that my mum and I should go. We had 14 time, so I thought we could practise parking. I 15, with the wheel hitting the pavement. After that, the little bit of confidence I had was 16. I tried two more times, but did not improve much. Then we went towards the driving 17 site.
I waited twenty minutes---just enough time to make myself believe that I was going to fail. Then, finally, it was my 18 I wasn’t sure of myself at all. I just wanted to get it over and make sure that I had to come back next Thursday.
The first thing I had to do was parking, which I did quite well. The 19 that came with it hit me like a wave. The rest of the test went well and I passed it.
The 20 of my mum made her face softer. I knew her worry was gone and she was happy for me.

In 1982, Steven Callahan was crossing the Atlantic alone in his sailboat when it struck something and sank. He was out of the sailing track and floating in a lifeboat, alone. His supplies were 1 . His chances of surviving were small. 2 when three fishermen found him seventy-six days later, he was alive — much 3 than he was when he started, but alive.
His 4 of how he survived is interesting and attractive. His subtle act — how he 5 to catch fish, how he evaporated sea water to6 fresh water — is very interesting. But the thing that 7 my eye was how he managed to keep himself going when all hope seemed lost, when it seemed no 8 continuing the struggle, when he was 9 greatly, when his lifeboat was pierced and after more than a week’s struggling with his weak body. He was starved and 10 exhausted. Giving up would have seemed the only sensible choice.
When people 11 these kinds of circumstances, they do something with their minds that gives them the courage to keep going. Many people in 12 dangerous circumstances give in or go mad. Something the survivors do with their thoughts helps them find the courage to carry on 13 major difficulties.
"I tell myself I can 14 it," wrote Callahan in his book. "Compared to what others have been through, I'm fortunate. I tell myself these things over and over, 15 courage and strength."
I wrote that down after I read it16 it struck me as something important. And I've told myself the same thing when my own goals seemed17 off or when my problems seemed too powerful. And every time I've said it, I have always come back to my senses.
The truth is, our circumstances are only bad 18to something better. But others have been through much worse, that is, in comparison with what 19 have been through, you're fortunate. Tell this to yourself over and over again, and it will help you 20 the rough spots with a little more perseverance(毅力) .

I sat next to my close friend,Tina,in my history class. Our teacher,Miss Turner announced a new1.We were to create a2about cultures. As required,we wrote the names of two friends we wanted in our group.Miss Turner informed us that she would3our choices and let us know the result.I had no4that I would work with Tina because I knew we had chosen each other.
The next day,I waited anxiously when Miss Turner started to call out 5.When she reached group three,Tina was called.6,my name was not included.“There must have been some7!"I thought to myself.
Than I heard8The last group with Mauro and Karina! How9! How could I face being in that group—the boy who hardly spoke English and the girl who wore10clothes a11 the time?
I went to Miss Turner to11I should be in a “good” group. She gently placed a hand on my shoulder.“I know what you want,Rachael,”she said, but your group12you more.Only you can help them get an ideal 13 .Will you help them?"
I14walked to where the others in my group sat. Halfway through the week, I 15myself enjoying working with my partners. There was no need to 16—I grew sincerely interested in learning something about then. Mauro, I found out, was17with English after he came to this country. Karina wanted to be a fashion designer and she had a lot of18ideas.They were the ones no one cared enough about to try to understand—except Miss Turner.
Miss Turner gave us an A on that newspaper. But I think she is the one who truly 19it. I really20that Miss Turner gave me a chance to see other people in a new light.

Do fight against painting pollution
Do you know what kind of things the young people are reading? More and more 1 and teachers have noticed another kind of pollution, which comes from the printed papers2  on streets.
These printed things 3newspapers but have hardly anything to do with 4. You can only find reading materials badly made up there—some are too strange for anyone to  5 ; others are frightening stories of something 6. However, many of the young readers are getting interested in such 7 reading, which 8 them what they should pay for their breakfast and brings them nightmares and immoral ideas in 9 Homework is left 10 and daily games lost.
These sellers stand about on streets selling their papers well. The writers, publishers and printers,11  they are, we never know, are 12 their silent money.
The sheep-skinned wolf’s story seems to have been forgotten once again. Why not 13 this kind of thing? Yes, both teachers and parents have asked each other for more strict control of the young readers. 14 , the more you want to forbid it, the more they want to have a look at it. 15 you may even find several children, driven by their curious natures, 16 one patched paper, which has traveled from hand to hand.
It really does17to our society. It has already formed a sort of moral pollution. The 18  teachers and parents need more powerful support in their protection of the young generation. At the same time, the young 19   need more interesting books to help them 20 those ugly paper.

As a young girl growing up in rural Alabama, I never understood why my mom spent so much time baking. And she always made my brother and me1her. A whole day every other week was devoted to making bread. It always made our small arms tired.
Despite our best efforts, the flour dust always went everywhere. I2to be outside with my playmates, and never3my mom’s desire for quality family time with her children, at least when it came to spending it in the4. Years have gone by, and I have become a mother myself. I prefer to leave most of the cooking to my husband and he loves it. He’s quite5at doing it, too.
On one occasion my husband was6dinner, and I was at the kitchen table going through the day’s mail when our little son, Cody, asked if he could help7. My husband said yes, and I sat there amused, watching them.
“What are you doing?” I asked.
“Helping dad cook.” he replied with a big8on his face. I thought back to those9when my mom asked me to help her bake bread, and I was10, but obeyed. Perhaps she was trying to create something more than just fresh bread—maybe a few lasting11.
As I watched Cody do it with all his attention, I realized that he had12

Years ago in Scotland, the Clark family had a dream. Clark and his wife worked and saved, 1plans for their nine children and themselves to 2to the United States. It had taken years, but they had finally 3 enough money and had gotten passports and reservations for the 4 family on a new liner to the United States.
The entire family was 5 with excitement about their new life. However, seven days before their 6, the youngest son was bitten by a dog. The doctor sewed up the boy 7 hung a yellow sheet on the Clarks’ front door.8 the possibility of rabies (狂犬病), they were being quarantined (隔离)for fourteen days.
The family’s dreams were dashed. They would not be able to make the trip to America 9 they had planned. Watching the ship leave 10 his family, the father, filled with disappointment and anger, cursed both his son and God for their 11.
Five days later, the tragic news spread 12 Scotland---the mighty Titanic had sunk. The13ship had sunk, taking hundreds of lives with it. The Clark family 14have been on that ship, but because the son had been bitten by a dog, they were left 15

One day, four lawyers were riding along a country road. There had been a(n) 1, and the ground was soft. The lawyers rode 2, talking and laughing. As they were passing through a 3, they heard some noises in the grass.
“What’s the matter here?” asked one man.
“Oh, it’s only some old robins (知更鸟)!” said another one, “The 4 has blown them out of the nest. They are too young to 5.”
“What a 6! They’ll die,” said the third one.
“Well! They’re nothing but 7,” said the first lawyer.
The three men looked down and saw the mother robin 8 to her mates. Then they rode on, talking and laughing as before. In a few minutes they had 9 the birds. But the fourth lawyer, whose name was Abraham Lincoln, 10. He got down from his 11 and gently took the little ones up. They didn’t seem 12, but chirped (唧唧叫) softly, as if they knew they were safe.
“Never 13, my little fellows,” said Mr. Lincoln. Then he looked up to find the nest from which they had 14. It was much higher than he could reach. But Mr. Lincoln could 15. He put the birds softly, one by one, into their warm home.
In a few minutes, Mr. Lincoln 16 the others. He had torn his coat on the thorny (多刺的) tree. Then all three of them 17 heartily. They thought it so 18 that a strong man should take so much trouble just for some worthless young birds.
“Gentlemen,” said Mr. Lincoln, “I couldn’t have 19 tonight if I had left those helpless robins to die in the 20 grass.”
Abraham Lincoln afterwards became President of America.

In 1982, Steven Callahan was crossing the Atlantic alone in his sailboat when it struck something and sank.He got into a life boat, but his supplies were 1.His chances of surviving were small.2when three fishermen found him 76 days later, he was alive —much 3 than he was when he started, but alive.
His 4 of how he survived is fascinating. His cleverness —how he 5 to catch fish, how he evaporated(蒸发) sea water to 6 fresh water—is very interesting.
But the thing that7my eye was how he managed to keep himself going when all hope seemed lost, and there seemed no 8 in continuing the struggle. He was starved and 9worn-out.Giving up would have seemed the only possible choice.
When people 10these kinds of circumstances, they do something with their minds that gives them the courage to keep going. Many people in 11desperate circumstances 12in or go mad.Something the survivors do with their thoughts helps them find the courage to carry on 13difficulties.
"I tell myself I can 14it," wrote Callahan in his book.-Compared to what others have been through, I'm fortunate.I tell myself these things over and over, 15up courage..."
I wrote that down after 1 read it.It 16 me as something important. And I've told myself the same thing when my own goals seemed17 off or when my problems seemed too terrible. And every time I've said it, I have always come back to my 18
The truth is,our circumstances are only bad19to something better. But others have been though the much worse, that is,in comparison with what others have been through, you’re fortunate.Tell this to yourself over sad over again, and it will help you20though the rough situations with a little more courage.
