3.There is a large percentage of Asian people in the US.They're hard working,respectful but strange sometimes.If you don't understand the culture,you will get some problems with them.Asian people are different from any other cultures if you think you know them,you might want to think again.
How are they different?When it comes to most Asian culture,respect is everything.You can do anything you want but don't disrespect an Asian man.You will get some real consequences afterward and especially if he is your boss.It's something called face saving in the Asian culture.It's ridiculous sometimes but it's their culture.Sometimes their culture can come in between their relationship at work.Asian people might expect a lot of respect from their co-workers when their co-workers just see them as an equal.
Americans are very different from Asian people.If you're Asian,you might want to understand the American culture and even adapt to their culture if you work with them.It will be easier for you since you're in their countries.Imagine an American working in China,expecting Chinese co-workers to get along with him when he criticizes them straight out on every single matter in front of everyone.I think they will take him outside and take care of him.It just doesn't work that way with Asian people.
If you're an American boss giving your Asian employee a review,you will see that they will have a problem with your negative remarks.They will think that you don't like them,disrespectful,and want to get rid of them; when in fact,you're just doing your job.You just encourage them to do their work better.Of course,it's not fair for you as an American boss but just expect that it can be something that is on your Asian employee's mind.

18.Last year I bought a gamefor my c hildren and I played it with them together.It troubled me that everyone won the game in the end.This seems like a perfect ending,but where's the incentive (刺激) to keep playing?We played the game twice in all,and it has been covered with dust there ever since.
Without a possible winner,a game or contest loses its excitement.If there's nothing for one to compete for,the drive to do one's best is replaced by a"what's the meaning?"attitude.Competition is closely related to motivation.It's part of human nature to be competitive.A competitive spirit is the key to our success among our adults,so why not teach it in our children?
I'm not suggesting we make our children compete against each other in heated competitions in all aspects of life.What I'm here to say is that we should pay attention to coaches(教练) who lose the spirit of good sportsmanship in the heated moment of the game.But in the right situations,a healthy competition can teach our kids a lot about life.While games and contests show the importance of drive and determination,they also teach our children how to deal with failure.And then come other good lessons-about learning from mistakes,searching for ways to improve and finding the will to try again.
56.The author found that.C
A.the game interested them lot

C.Children should compete for nothing but prizes.

15.Birds Can"Read"Human Gaze
We all know that people sometimes change their behavior when someone is looking their way.Now,a new study reported online on April 2nd in Current Biology shows that jackdaws-birds related to crows with eyes that appear similar to human eyes-can do the same.
"Jackdaws seem to recognize the eye's role in visual perception,or at the very least they are extremely sensitive to the way that human eyes are oriented(朝向),"said Auguste von Bayern, formerly of the University of Cambridge and now at the University of Oxford.
When presented with a preferred food,hand-raised jackdaws took significantly longer to get the reward when a person was directing his eyes towards the food than when he was looking away,according to the research team led by Nathan Emery of the University of Cambridge and Queen Mary University of London.The birds hesitated only when the person was unfamiliar and thus potentially threatening.
In addition,the birds were able to interpret human communicative gestures,such as gaze alternation and pointing,to help them find hidden food,they found.The birds were unsuccessful in using unmoving cues,including eye gaze or head orientation.
Unlike most birds,jackdaws'eyes have a dark pupil surrounded by a silvery white iris.The researchers said they believe jackdaws are probably sensitive to human eyes because,as in humans,eyes are an important means of communication for them.The hand-raised birds examined in the study may be even better than wild jackdaws at attending to human gaze and responding to the gestures of the people who have raised them.
The findings are particularly notable given that most other species investigated so far,including our closest relatives the chimpanzee and"man's best friend,"the dog,are not particularly sensitive to eye orientation and eye gaze,von Bayern said.Rather,she continued,chimps and dogs seem to rely on other cues such as head or body orientation in determining the looking direction of others.The results suggest that birds may deserve more respect for their mental abilities.
"We may have understated the psychological world of birds,"von Bayern said."Jackdaws,among many other birds,form pair ties for life and need to have much in common and work together with their partner,which requires an efficient way of communicating and sensitivity to their partner's viewpoint."

A.like humans, they also use eyes to communicate
B.they are far more intelligent than other birds
C.they are mostly hand-raised by humans
D.their eyes also have a dark pupil
69.Why does the author refer to chimpanzees and dogs?B
A.To suggest that they are much better at interpreting gaze alternation.
B.To reflect how unique jackdaws are in being able to notice gaze orientation.
C.To show that they communicate more frequently with humans than jackdaws.
D.To make clear that they rely on other means in determining people's intention.
70.What does the research finding uggest?B
A.Not all jackdaws are good at attending to human gaze.
B.We may have understated jackdaws'mental abilities.
C.We know embarrassingly less about birds than we assume.
D.The closer we communicate with animals,the better we understand them.
2.AVATAR director James Cameron is now taking his camera deep into the ocean.

The filmmaker has spend the past few years working with his team of engineers to design and build the submarine called  Deepsea  Challenger.Unlike ordinary submarines,it is wrapped(包围)in cameras and lights so that Cameron can film the ocean from the inside.
The minute-long video that Cameron took while under the sea has been released by the National Geographic. There are no words in the video, but there is something fascinating  about this extremely quiet and  distantplace.Cameron said be was thankful that he had had the chance to go there.
"There had be a moment where I just stopped, and took it in,and said,‘This is where I am  at the bottom of the ocean, the deepest place on Earth  What does that mean?'"Cameron told reporters.
The Mariana Trench was once thought to be of little interest to scientists. It was assumed that nothing could live under so much pressure and with so little light,But in recent years scientists have found creatures there like fish and shrimps (虾)that can resist the heavy pressure. They are also trying to figure out what role deep-sea trenches play in earthquakes.

16.Hi,Nancy!Thank you for writing to me.I enjoy getting letters from students in China and I'll be happy to exchange letters with you.
The first thing I want to tell you is that if the boys are calling you names it is their fault,not yours.Boys,at your age,are different from girls.They are trying to prove that they are manly and they often do this by choosing someone who can't really fight back.This is,of course,wrong but it happens and it is generally referred to as bullying.In general,the boys know they are bigger and stronger than you are,so they can make fun of you and make you cry and then laugh about it.If you let them see that they are hurting you,they will only do it more.It isn't that they want to hurt you; they simply want to make themselves feel superior.It's stupid but it is very common.
The best way of getting the boys to stop calling you names is to simply ignore them,knowing that the names can't hurt you and that the boys are being stupid.If you can laugh at them,they will get tired of trying to make you cry.Then they will give up and begin to notice you as a young woman.I suspect some of them actually like you and are laughing at you just to get your attention.Again,it's stupid but it happens.In reality,you can control this situation by not letting them see you getting hurt.Laugh at them,tell them they are acting like children and they should grow up and then walk away with your head held high.
One more thing,Nancy.It is very important that you stop hurting yourself.If someone else hurts you it is bad enough but you shouldn't make it worse by then hurting yourself.Even sticking a pen into your finger can cause an infection and give you a lot of trouble and besides,it hurts.The next time you are frustrated by a bunch of stupid boys,write to me.You and I can talk about anything you like,about China,about Canada,about travel,anything.Having a conversation with me is better than sticking holes in your fingers,as least I hope it is.
I wish you all the best and I hope to hear from you again soon.If you get a chance,please send me your picture.
Best wishes.
Brad

17.The sky was completely dark, the house was creaking(吱吱响),and I still had four hours until my parents got home.Locked in my parents'room,I turned on the TV at full volume so I wouldn't hear the creaking house.
I barely heard the phone ring.I picked it up and said,"Hello…hello..?"but there was no response.I knew someone was on the other end. Finally,I hung up.A few minutes later, the phone rang again; still no one was there.I became more frightened as time passed; the same person called five more times.
At this point I didn't bother picking up,but the ringing continued. To get my mind off this caller,I called my friend. She told me not to worry and to turn the phone off.As we talked,I heard someone pull into the driveway. When I peeked out (探出) of the window,I saw an unfamiliar car.
Thirty minutes passed and the car was still in my driveway. It drove up and down the driveway. My friend told me to call the police, but I refused.

At this point I was considering calling the police, but my friend offered to drive by."Maybe if they see me pull in,they will leave,"she suggested.By the time she arrived, the car had left. The phone rang again and I picked up,thinking it might be my friend.Someone on the other end said,"Bye-bye."
