BEIJING Jan 7, 2009: China's Liu Xiang will probably not defend his world 110m hurdles title in Berlin later this year because of the injury that forced him out of the Beijing Olympics, his coach told local media on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old former world record holder and Olympic champion had surgery on the injured foot last month but will not be back in competitive form in time for the August 15-23 world championships, Sun Haiping told Titan Sports.

"Liu will not attend the worlds unless he is able to run at least 13.20 seconds before that, otherwise it makes no sense for us to go to Berlin," said Sun.

"That is likely to be too difficult for him ... He might be eliminated after the first heat and that would be terribly damaging to his confidence."

The Athens Olympic gold medallist Liu was robbed of the chance of defending his title on home soil last August by the Achilles' injury.

He has been away from the track since his dramatic departure from the Bird's Nest stadium on August 18 and is currently undergoing rehabilitation in the U.S.

Liu could be back in training as early as April, but the highly competitive world championships need at least half a year to prepare for, Sun said.

"He will probably return to competitive running at the Shanghai Grand Prix in September," he said. "Our key target is the London Olympics."

Cuban Dayron Robles, who took the world record and Olympic title away from Liu last year, will be favourite to win his first 110 metres hurdles world title in Berlin. He finished fourth behind Liu in Osaka in 2007.

1.Why will Liu Xiang probably not attend the Berlin World Championships in August?

A.Because he will have surgery on his injured foot.

B.Because he is afraid to lose the game to Dayron Robles.

C.Because he is afraid to lose confidence as he is still not so competitive.

D.Because he is too ashamed quitting in the Beijing Olympics.

2.What does the underlined word “eliminated” mean in Paragraph 4?

       A.lost                B.removed                C.discriminated              D.executed

3.Who is holding the current world record of 110m hurdles?

BEIJING, Jan.3rd.(Xinhua)-Li Wanfei, 27, warmly and with force hands a red envelope with cash as a gift to her friend who is getting married during the New Year holiday.

Nowadays in China, wedding presents are a thing of the past-the trend is cash, and there's pressure to put the right amount in the red envelopes.

" I would feel ashamed to give less than average, especially for my close friends," Li said."The sum represents our friendship and intimacy."

Despite being on a tight budget, Li and her husband refuse to be stingy(吝啬的).They gave.at least 15,000 Yuan(2,377 U.S.dollars)as wedding gifts in 2011.

Li usually gives 200 or 300 Yuan for colleagues, 500 for ordinary friends, and 1,000 or more for close friends. Her husband even gave his cousin 10,000 Yuan, hoping to convey the deep love he has for his cousin.

Lavish wedding ceremonies have become, increasingly popular as China's economy has grown, and the more lavish(豪华的)the wedding, the more money the bride and groom can expect to receive as gifts.

Wedding invitations tend to come more often during the holidays, as the days off make it convenient for relatives and friends to attend.

According to Liu Ning, manager of Forever Love Wedding Service Agency, money spent on weddings has grown among young people, and as they see it as a once-in-a-lifetime experience, they want a lavish ceremony.

"That's why the couple expects more gift money and takes the sum as a standard for judging friendship," Liu said.

Liu said that middle-class people usually spend around 25,000 Yuan on a wedding plan and video, but that price doesn't include food and flowers.

Liu Qingzhu, an academician with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said ceremonies have become much more lavish as the practice of cash gifts has become more widespread, and some couples even try to turn a profit.

"People sometimes face a difficult and uncertain corner about weddings," Liu said."They feel happy for the couple, but giving money hurts.Money worship is not a good tradition and shouldn't be praised."

Chinese couples could think of new models for weddings instead of comparing venues(场馆)or gift money, for luxury and waste are not good customs, Liu added.

BEIJING, Jan. 11(Xinhuanet)-- Sleeping a little bit longer a day might help fight against obesity(肥胖), a recent study shows. The research-- published in the Archives of Internal Medicine along with an editorial by Turek and Northwestern colleague Joseph Bass commenting on it and related research-- after comparing people of normal weight- a body mass index of less than 25- with those who were overweight or obese , found that sleeping for an extra 20 minutes each night could offer a pain-free way to lose weight.

Insufficient sleep is linked with changes in hormone levels that may stimulate(刺激)appetite. A series of studies in recent months have shown that the less people sleep, the heavier they tend to be.

American researcher Robert Vorona from Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk and colleagues have now examined the relationship between people's self-reported sleep time per 24 hours and their body mass index(BMI). They found that total sleep time and BMI were inversely correlated was total sleep time decreased, BMI increased, except in the severely obese group." Americans experience insufficient sleep and corpulent bodies. Clinicians are aware of the burden of obesity on patients," the study said. "Our findings suggest that major extensions of sleep time may not be necessary, as an extra 20 minutes of sleep per night seems to be associated with a lower body mass index," it added. "We warn that this study does not establish a cause-and-effect relationship between restricted sleep and obesity (but) investigations demonstrating success in weight loss via extensions of sleep would help greatly to establish such a relationship."

In November 2004, researchers from Columbia University in New York City, New York demonstrated a clear link between the risk of being obese and hours of nightly sleep, finding that people aged 32 to 59 who slept four hours or less per night were 73% more likely to be obese than people who slept between seven and nine hours per night.

The research, which was published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, found that____________.

China launched its fifth Beidou orbiter into space on Sunday morning, moving it one step closer to its goal of building a navigation(导航) and positioning satellite network.

The Beidou, or Compass, system is being built to rival the US-developed GPS, the European Union's Galileo and Russia's Global Navigation Satellite System. It can allow travelers, drivers and military officials to know their locations.

The fifth orbiter was launched on top of a Long March 3A carrier rocket at 5:30 am on Sunday from Xichang of Southwest China's Sichuan province.

It is the third Compass satellite launched this year, following launches on Jan 17 and June 2.

The short interval of less than two months since the last launch demonstrated that "the country is stepping into a busy period of launching the Compass satellites", an unnamed official in charge of the project said last month.

The first two orbiters were launched in 2007 and 2009 respectively.

Sun Jiadong, the Beidou program's chief designer, said on June 21 in a TV interview that China would launch 13 to 15 Beidou navigation satellites into orbit by 2012 to form a network that provides regional service covering the neighboring areas.

And in about 10 years, the network would be expanded to include more than 30 satellites covering the globe, he said.

The system is a crucial part of the country's space infrastructure for providing navigation and positioning services in transportation, meteorology, petroleum prospecting, forest fire monitoring, disaster forecasting, telecommunications and public security.

In addition, a global positioning system is crucial to any country's national security and defense, said Ran Chengqi, an official in charge of the program, referring to the fact that the US initially built its GPS system for military purposes.

It is unimaginable for China to go without such a system, he said.

Earlier reports cited(引用) Song Xiaojun, a Beijing-based military expert, as saying that 90 percent of the world's current weapons systems need a global positioning system.
