“ Are you too stupid to do anything right?”These words—said by a woman to a little boy who was obviously her son—were spoken 21 he had walked away from her. They boy returned, his eyes down-cast.
Not a 22 moment, perhaps, 23 small moments sometimes last a very long time. And a few words—though they mean 24 at the time to the people who say them—can have great 25 .
I recently heard a story from a man named Malcolm Dalkoff. For the last 24 years he has been a professional 26 .Here is what he told me:
As a boy in Rock Island, Dalkoff was terribly 27 .He had few 28 and no self-confidence.One day, his English teacher, Ruth Brach, gave the class an assignment(作业).The students had been reading To Kill a Mockingbird. Now they were to write their own chapter that would 29 the last chapter of the novel.
Dalkoff wrote his chapter and turned it 30 .Today he can not recall anything 31
about the chapter he wrote, or what 32 Mrs.Branch gave him. What he does remember is the four words Mrs.Brach wrote in margin(空白处)of the paper:“This is 33 writing.”
Four words.They 34 his life.
“ 35 I read those words, I had no idea of who I was or 36 I was going to be.”he said.“After reading her note, I went home and wrote a short story, something I had always been 37 of doing but never believed I could do.”
Over the rest of that year in school, he wrote many short stories and always brought them to school for Mrs.Brach to evaluate. She was 38 , tough and honest.“She was just what I
39 .”Dalkoff said.
His confidence 40 .Dalkoff believes that none of this would have happened if that woman had not written those four words in the margin of his paper.

Thanks to a combination of young businessmen, large numbers of university students and revitalization (新生) efforts by the local and national governments, today’s Nanjing has an 36 of youthful exuberance (繁茂) that would have been 37 only a few decades ago. 38 , the city, a booming city of 6.5 million on the banks of the Yangtze River some 185 miles west of Shanghai, bears 39 resemblance to the former capital of China that suffered the worst cruelty and violence of World War II.
40 Nanjing has shown a remarkable capacity for reinvention during its 2,500-year history. And in recent years, the city has moved 41 its tragic past to become a vital engine of China’s economic growth, thanks 42 to its position in the middle of China’s prosperous eastern seaboard. Growth has also 43 thanks to improved ground transportation: A new bullet train linking Nanjing and Shanghai started service last year, 44 travel time between the cities from several hours to just 75 minutes, and a Beijing-Shanghai high-speed line is 45 to open later this year, with a stop in Nanjing. Within the city, two metro lines were built in the last few years; 15 more are planned to begin service by 2030.
Signs of Nanjing’s 46 wealth and optimism can be seen everywhere. In the heart of the downtown Xinjiekou district, a bronze statue of Sun Yat-sen, 47 the father of modern China, looks 48 over a busy 49 area.
There is perhaps no more 50 symbol of the city’s transformation than the Zifeng Tower, a 1,480-foot skyscraper that opened its doors last May. 51 offices, restaurants and an InterContinental hotel, the tower is the second-tallest building in China and billed as the seventh-tallest in the world.
Underlying all this development is a large Chinese and 52 student population — there are several major universities, plus a branch of Johns Hopkins’s international studies school. In fact, art and music 53 in all sorts of places.
On a larger 54 , local government officials and private investors are pushing the city as a rising center for contemporary art and architecture, hoping to attract 55 from the neon-bathed streets of its neighbor Shanghai.

Not many foreigners can say that they have lived in China for as long as I have. Perhaps some can hack(应对) it for about two or three years and then they want to either go back home or move on to another country. As for me, I cannot get 36 of this place. I love it here so much and I honestly believe that I am very comfortable here. It feels just like 37. And, here 38 the story.
It was August 2001 and I had just said 39 to my family and friends as I 40 to Los Angeles International Airport to catch my 41 to Incheon, South Korea which would then 42 me to Beijing. When I arrived in LA I was very excited and a little 43 because I didn't know what to 44 when I arrived in China. It 45 like receiving a wrapped gift and you had no idea what was in it 46 you opened it. As I 47 the Korean Airlines 48 desk I gave the attendant(空乘人员) my ticket. He looked at me and said, "I'm sorry, sir. This flight was yesterday." I was in 49 and lost for words. The attendant told me I had to wait several hours until they could 50 whether I could get onto another flight.
I was so afraid at this time that I called my mother and frantically(狂乱地) told her," I missed my flight! I don't think I can go to 51! I'm better off going back to Washington, DC!" That's when she 52 I call my leader in China and ask whether I could still go there. Looking 53 all of the papers I found a phone number and called the Beijing office. 54, my leader was there and assured me I could still join the group. Also, KAL had a seat for me on the next flight. So, after 24 hours and a 55 in Korea, I arrived in Beijing. I don't know what my feeling was, but I wasn't tired because I had finally arrived and I just wanted to look around the city. As I traveled to the hotel in the car I saw all the wonderful buildings, friendly people and interesting sites. I was so happy to be here.
