17.Why texting harms your IQThe regular use of text messages and e-mails can lower the IQ more than twice as much as smoking marijuana (大麻).That is the statement of researchers who have found that tapping away on a mobile phone or computer keypad or checking for electronic messages temporarily knocks up to 10points off the user's IQ.This rate of decline in intelligence compares unfavorably with the four-point drop in IQ associated with smoking marijuana,according to British researchers,who have described the phenomenon of improved stupidity as"infomania".The research conducted by Hewlett Packard,the technology company,has concluded that it is mainly a problem for adult workers,especially men.
It is concluded that too much use of modern technology can damage a person's mind.It can cause a constant distraction of"always on"technology when employees should be concentrating on what they are paid to do.Infomania means that they lose concentration as their minds remain fixed in an almost permanent state of readiness to react to technology instead of focusing on the task in hand.The report also added that,in a long term,the brain will be considerably shaped by what we do to it and by the experience of daily life.At a microcellular level,the complex networks of nerve cells that make up parts of the brain actually change in response to certain experiences.
Too much use of modern technology can be damaging not only to a person's mind,but to their social relationship.1100 adults were interviewed during the research.More than 62 percent of them admitted that they were addicted to checking their e-mails and text messages so often that they scrutinized work-related ones even when at home or on holiday.Half said that they always responded immediately to an email and will even interrupt a meeting to do so.It is concluded that infomania is increasing stress and anxiety and affecting one's characteristics.Nine out of ten thought that colleagues who answered e-mails or messages during a face-to-face meeting were extremely rude.
The effects on IQ were studied by Dr.Glenn Wilson,a psychologist at University of London."This is a very real and widespread phenomenon,"he said."We have found that infomania will damage a worker's performance by reducing their mental sharpness and changing their social life.Companies should encourage a more balanced and appropriate way of working."

18.My father was attached to gardening by birth. One of my earliest memories is following:Dad barefoot around in the garden with both hands blackened from digging in the soil. The garden was a wonderland full of possibilities.
As Dad grew older,he still loved gardening.Even when he was diagnosed with cancer,he still planted all sorts of plants.Sometimes,I would come over to visit, and we would walk together in the garden. But then, something changed.Like the weeds that took over his garden, the cancer grew rapidly in Dad,and the doctor gave up.I stayed with Dad twenty-four hours a day and I found myself in all kinds of uncomfortable situations with Dad until I promised to care for the garden.
Though I had heard the words of the doctor, what really made me believe that Dad was dying was the state of his garden. That year,he only planted tomatoes.Too tired to weed them,he simply tied them with strong strings to the fence and let them be.It made me sad to see them ignored,so I would come over and water them once in a while, and remove the weeds.I still remember the day when I picked the last tomato from the vine(藤).That day was one of the saddest I had ever experienced in my life.
Three years ago,I decided to plant my own garden.I decided I would start out with just a few tomatoes. That morning when I moved to the garden, something caught the corner of my eye and I had to smile. It was my eight-year-old son Nathan, standing barefoot in the soil, happily playing in soil.

16.Rent control, like all other government-mandated(强制执行的)PRICE CONTROL,is a law placing a maximum price,or a"rent ceiling,"on what landlords may charge tenants(房客).It is a program designed to stop rents from rising rapidly and is used mainly in large urban areas where there are more people than housing. In cities with rent control, the city government sets the maximum rent that a landlord can charge for an apartment.Supporters of rent control argue that it protects people who are living in the apartments.Their rent cannot increase;therefore, they are not in danger of losing their homes. However, almost all the critics conclude that rent control is destructive. They say after a long time, rent control may have negative effects.
In a 1990 survey of 464 people published in.the May 1992 issue of the American Economic Review,93% of US respondents agreed that a ceiling on rents reduces the quantity and quality of apartments available.Landlords are too cautious (perhaps too smart) to put their faith in rental apartments because they know that the rental-controlled apartments cannot increase their profits. Therefore, they invest in other businesses where they can increase their profits. They do not invest in new buildings which would also be rent-controlled.As a result, new apartments are not built. Many people who need apartments cannot find any.
Some theorists argue that the minimum wage law can cause problems in the same way. The federal government sets the minimum that an employer must pay workers. The minimum helps people who generally look for unskilled,low-paying jobs. However,if the minimum is high, employers may hire fewer workers. They will replace workers with machinery. The price, which is the wage that employers must pay, increases. Therefore, other things being equal, the number of workers that employers want decreases. Thus, critics claim,an increase in the minimum wage may cause unemployment. Some poor people may find themselves without jobs instead of with jobs at the minimum wage.
Supporters of the minimum wage say that it helps people keep their dignity,Because of the law, workers cannot sell their services for less than the minimum.Furthermore, employers cannot force workers to accept jobs at unfair wages. But the supporters make a big error. They fail to realize that it is possible for such a law to increase wages beyond the value of what the workers contributes.
Economic theories predict the results of economic decisions such as decisions about farm production, rent control, and the minimum wage. The predictions may be correct only if"other things are equal".Economists do not agree on some of the predictions. They also do not agree on the value of different decisions. Some economists support a particular decision while others criticize it.Economists do agree, however, that there are no simple answers to economic questions.

Swedish   Archaeologists Make New Discoveries
Archaeologists have begun exploring an unknown ancient city at a village called Vlochos,five hours north of Athens.The Archaeological (31)Hare scattered on and around the Strongiloveni hill on the great Thessaliam plains and can be traced to several historical periods.
"What used to be considered remains of some (32)Isettlement can now be upgraded to remains of a city higher significance than (33)Cthought,"says Robin Ronnland,PhD student in Classical Archaeology and Ancient History at the university of Gotheoburg and leader of the firework.
"We came across the site which has never been explored before in connection with another project last year and retailed the great (34)Jright away."
Working together with the Swedish Institute at Athens and the local archaeological service in Karditsa,the Vlochos Archacological Project (VLAP) was started with an aim to explore the remains.The project's research team completed the first field season during two weeks in September 2016.
Ronnlund says that the hill is hiding many (35)E.Remains of towers,walls and city gates can be found on the mountaintop and slopes,but (36)Ganything is visible on the ground below.The ambition is to avoid digging and instead use (37)Asuch as ground-penetrating radar.This will enable the team to leave the site in the same (38)Bas it was in when they arrived.The success of this method is (39)Dfrom the results of the first field season.
"We found a town square and a street network that indicate that we are dealing with quite a large city.The area inside the city wall measured over 40hectares.We also found ancient pottery and coins that can help to(40)Fthe city.Our oldest finds are from around 500BC,but the city seems to have flourished mainly from the fourth to the third century BC before it was abandoned for some reason,maybe in connection with the Roman conquest of the area.
Ronnlund believes that the Swedish-Greek project can provide important clues as to what happened during this violent period in Greek history.
