My son and I were trying to sell the house we had repaired but in the barn(谷仓) there were bats (蝙蝠) and they would not leave . The barn was their home. They told us so in their own way. They hung there in the barn and seemed determined to stay for the season. “Don't worry about it, Dad.”Patrick said.“They keep down the mosquitoes(蚊子).”

Unfortunately they also kept the buyers away. When we had asked a person to sell the house for us he had refused to show it because of the bats. “Bats are popular.” Patrick comforted me. “They're ecological(生态学的) .” “Isn't there a machine you can buy that produces high frequency sounds to keep bats away?”“I don't know. ”said Patrick. “But I like bats, and whoever buys this house will probably like them too.” “Probably?”I hated that word. “How many bats are there, anyway?”“I counted about 90 last night. ”said Patrick. “They were dropping out from under the edge of the roof.”“You mean there are more—outside?” “They're everywhere, Dad. But look at it this way. When the cold weather comes, they'll be off to Mexico. Maybe in the spring we can keep them out, Don't worry about it. ”he said for the hundredth time. “It's not a problem. ”

The bat expert I called was even more active than Patrick. “I think you've got a large number there.” he said in wonder. “I've been trying to attract bats to our house for 25 years. A single bat eats up his weight in mosquitoes and black flies three times every night. You're a very lucky man.”

I offered to share my luck with him. He could take them away. “Bats have a remarkable homing instinct(本能) .”he said. “They'd fly straight back even if I transported them 100 miles. Once they have settled, you can't stop them from coming back. ”I was silent. Finally we managed to rent(出租) the house to a young family, who were also interested in buying it. “What about the bats?” I said to Patrick.

“Oh, they love the bats.” he said. “No mosquitoes. No black flies. It's one of the things that attracted them. ”Do you think they will really buy the house? “Probably. ”“Probably? Well. if they do, I suppose I'll have to admit that I was wrong. ”“You mean you're going to eat your words?”“Yes, I am. ”

Mistakes are a part of life. To err is human. Failure is also a part of life, not the end of life. Be happy facing life’s challenges. When you make the effort to be happy and to improve your life, you are actually rewarded along the way.
Life is like a game and maybe you can award points for every effort that has been a success for you. Try it. Add ten points for every achievement. And when you have reached 50 points, just yell, “Hey, I’ve won!” and give yourself a reward. If you happen to have missed your points for whatever reason, tell yourself, “Well, I tried!” which is better than not trying at all. Don’t let it be said you didn’t try.
What is it that you want to make yourself happy? Actually happiness means different things to different people. For example, an athlete will be happy winning his first race. For a new mother happiness would be seeing her baby’s first steps. Happiness for a poor person would mean having a meal just for today. So happiness for you is really something simple that you want for yourself.
It really doesn’t have to be big. As a matter of fact, you should be always realistic(现实的). Make the best out of every given situation. If you expect a certain result from a situation and it does not happen, don’t get despondent. This just means trying harder next time. We all have in us the power to succeed. Don’t let “give up” be a part of your vocabulary.

E-mail is one of the biggest threats to your home computer. By understanding how E-mail works, and by taking some steps in how you deal with reading and writing messages, you can keep this threat out of your computer. When you exchange E-mail with someone else, the messages sent between you and that person pass through several computer before they reach their places. Imagine this conversation as it is taking place in an Internet “room”, a very, very big room. Anyone, or more exactly, any program can probably understand what is being said, because most Internet conversations are not hidden in any way. As a result, others may be listening in, capturing what you send, and using it for their own good.

E-mail-borne viruses often arrive in attractive, fantastic appearances, much like the beautiful ads we receive by way of traditional mail that is made to sell us something. By beautiful appearances, an infected E-mail message seems to be something we want to read from someone we know, not a mean virus ready to destroy or damage our computers.

There are some steps that you can take to help you decide what to do with every E-mail message with an attachment (附件) that you receive. You should only read a message that passes all of these tests:

1)                    The Know Test: Is the E-mail from someone that you know?

2)                    The Received Test: Have you received E-mail from this sender before?

3)                    The Expect Test: Were you waiting for E-mail with an attachment from this sender?

4)                    The Meaning Test: Do the topic line of the E-mail message and the name of the attachment both have meanings?

5)                    The Virus Test: Is the E-mail infected?

56. Which of the following is the main idea of the first paragraph?

       A. We should not exchange our E-mail with someone else.

       B. It is dangerous to read and write E-mail message at home.

       C. We should learn how E-mail works to take care of our computers.

       D. Our chats on computers are usually going on in a big Internet room.

       A. taking               B. hiding                C. receiving                 D. destroying

58. As the Internet is open to anyone, we should _____.

       A. not read and write messages in our home computers

       B. not allowed nice advertisements to reach our computers

       C. stop our conversations while someone is listening in it
