One of my unforgettable journeys that I’ve ever made is the one to Sanya, Hainan Island together with my parents. Both Mother and I were full of excitement because neither had ever flown before. Aboard the airplane, I was taking pictures and chatting with other members of the tourist group. Climbing out of it, I smelled the fresh air, the salty sea winds and the smell of seafood. I could hardly wait to taste some. Unexpectedly, I did. As the leader of our group, my father had arranged some colleagues to go to a large nearby market to get some local and typical seafood and asked a good restaurant to cook and stir-fry them for us. How delicious and tasty they were! And none remained.

The following day, we went to several beautiful and romantic beaches. The most exciting and challenging part was that I went scuba-diving with my parents, where I saw many colorful fishes of all kinds and sizes swimming around us, seemingly welcoming and chatting with us. What fun it was!

On the third day, we went to visit a large farm where we saw and tasted some local fruits, especially coffee with different flavors. I came to know the process of producing and making coffee and why it had been so popular throughout the world. I took many pictures with the working farmers there.

On the fourth day, we visited one of the world-famous scenic spots-Tianyahaijiao for the whole day. I felt extremely excited when I finally managed to find the two separate parts of huge stones standing/lying at the most southern tip of China. To my surprise, there were a large number of elderly and young couples standing on or in front of them, promising to each other that they would love forever until death, never part. Later, explained by Father, I knew what it meant. How I envied them! I insisted that my parents should have a memorable photo taken too. Meanwhile I suddenly felt so small standing on the top of them. Anyway my fantastic dream came true. Then and there, I was determined that I should make a number of visits to this paradise in the years to come.

Believe it or not, I often have dreams about it.

It’s 5:00 in the morning when the alarm (闹钟) rings in my ears. I get out of bed and walk blindly through the dark into the bathroom. I turn on the light and put on my glasses. The house is still as I walk downstairs while my husband and three kids sleep peacefully. Usually I go for a long run, but today I choose my favorite exercise DVD Insanity. Sweat pours down my face and into my eyes. My heart races as I force my body to finish each movement. As I near the end of the exercise, I feel extremely tired, but a smile is on my face. It’s not a smile because the DVD is over, but a smile of success from pushing my body to its extreme limit.

Some people enjoy shopping, smoking, food, work, or even chocolate. But I need exercise to get through each day. Some shake heads when they see me run through the town. Others get hurt when I refuse to try just one bite of their grandmother’s chocolate cake. They raise their eyebrows, surprised by my “no thank you,” or by my choice to have a salad. Over the years, I have learned it’s okay to just say “no.” I shouldn’t feel sorry for refusing food that I don’t want to eat.

So what drives me to get out of bed at 5:00 a.m.? What gives me the reason to just say no to ice cream? Commitment. A commitment to change my life with a way that reduces daily worry, increases self -confidence and energy, extends (延长) life and above all improves my body shape. This is the point where a smile appears on my face as I look at myself in the mirror or try on my favorite pair of jeans that now fit just right. It’s through commitment and sweat that I can make a difference within myself inside and out.
