I was in P.E. when the planes hit the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon. As soon as I got home and for weeks before, I saw the disaster  3 on TV. Seeing the innocent people running for theiras the debris(瓦砾) started coming down the fire and smoke rose out of the  5 brought tears to my eyes. I couldn’t help imagining what the people on the   6 and in the buildings were thinking and going through, not  7 what was going on. I admired the courage of the firefighters who rushed in and risked their own lives to   8 others. It tore my heart apart to watch the  9 looks on the faces of so many people who didn’t know if their loved ones were dead or alive while  10 in all the debris.

Then it  11 me: All my life I had thought mainly of myself. I had it easy in life and had been taking it all for granted.

A feeling of coldness  12 down my back, and I cried just thinking of the possibility that it could have easily  13 to my family. My mom or dad could have been killed like that, and I would never, ever see them again. I began to evaluate what a real  14 in life was.

This disaster  15 me that awful things can happen to anyone at any time. Now when my mom or dad or sister go somewhere, even if it’s just  16 the store, I try to remember to tell them that I love them because I know there is a   17 that I may never tell them that   18 .

Not getting a new CD is not going to   19 my life. I can live with those kinds of problems. But losing someone I love would  20 make my life miserable.

1. 根据your parents won’t give you the money for it,可知前面是我想要的摇滚乐光盘,后面是父母不给钱买,是转折关系,所以用but,故选C。

Not getting a new CD is not going to break my life,可知这里描述life,后面说到当这样的事情发生,即前文中我想要买摇滚乐光盘,父母不给钱买的事情,所以应该是负态度词,排除C和D中性词。

故选A。

11.根据All my life I had thought mainly of myself. I had it easy in life and had been taking it all for granted可知我受到了打击,故选A。

I cried just thinking of the possibility that it could have easily happened to my family可知这里想说一种冷的感觉从后背倾斜而下。故选C。

My mom or dad could have been killed like that, and I would never, ever see them again可知这里想表达可能会发生在我家里,happen发生 compare比较 relate联系 turn转动,故选A。

I can live with those kinds of problems,故选B。

17.根据This disaster taughtme that awful things can happen to anyone at any time.

18.根据My mom or dad could have been killed like that, and I would never, ever see them again,故选D。

19.根据I can live with those kinds of problems可知经过这件事以后,不能买一张新的光盘已经不能破坏我的生活,故选D。

Microwaves may be great at warming up food, but what about warming people?

Using microwaves to directly heat owners of a room would save much of the energy wasted by heating walls and furniture. And despite popular ideas about microwaves, this technique would be safe, according to Charles R. Buffler of the Microwave Research Center in Marlborough, New Hampshire. Low-power microwaves only penetrate (贯穿) the skin (low-power microwave penetration in a ham is about 0.2 inches, for example) and with no negative effects.

To test this idea, Buffler subjected himself to microwaves in a special room using a standard 500-watt, 2459 MHz magnetron (磁控管). He found that a person will start to feel warmth at about 20 milliwatts per square centimeter (mw. /sq.cm.); a satisfactory feeling of warmth occurs between 35 and 50 mw./sq.cm. By comparison, a person standing in noonday summer sun feels the amount of 85 mw./sq.cm. And a frozen meat pie in your microwave oven receives about 1000 mw./sq. cm.

In houses of the future, each room could be provided with its own magnetron, says Buffler. When you stepped into the living room, for example, a motion detector would turn on the magnetron, filling the room with low-power microwaves. In the same way that a microwaves oven heats up a hamburger, but not the plate it’s on, you would feel warmth from the microwaves without changing the temperature of your coffee table. (You could, however, make your favorite easy chair even more comfortable by treating it with a radiation-absorbing chemical.)

While it might be some time before homeowners are comfortable enough with the idea to set up whole body microwave heaters in houses, Buffler says microwaves may attract livestock farmers. Lambs that are born outdoors in winter, for example, are frequently lost to cold. Microwaves could warm the lambs safely and quickly.

Which of the following can tell the main idea of the passage?

    A. A new heating system.    B. A new microwave oven.

    C. A popular technique.     D. The magnetron.

The test conducted by Buffler shows that when a person feels comfortable warmth, he receives about ____.

    A. 20 mw. / sq. cm.         B. 40 mw. / sq. cm.

    C. 60 mw. / sq. cm.         D. 85 mw. / sq. cm.

According to paragraph 4, which of the following fills the room with low-power microwaves?

    A. The magnetron.       B. The motion detector.

    C. The microwave oven.      D. The radiation-absorbing chemical.

Which of the following statements about microwave heaters would Buffler most probably agree with?

    A. Microwave heaters will soon be widely used by homeowners.

    B. Microwave heaters sometimes make people feel uncomfortable.

C. Microwave heaters will be probably first used by livestock farmers to protect their lambs in winter.

D. Microwave heaters cannot be accepted by the public because they are somewhat unsafe.

I know what you’re thinking : pizza (比萨饼)? For breakfast? But the truth is that you can have last night’s leftovers in the a. m. if you want to.

I know lots of women who skip breakfast (不吃早餐) , and they have a ton of different excuses for doing it . Some say they don’t have time. others think they’re “saving” calories (卡路里), still others just don’t like breakfast food .

But the bottom line is that eating in the morning is very important when you’re trying to lose weight. “Eating just about anything from 300 to 400 calories would be better than nothing at all,” says Katherine Brooking , R , D , who developed the super-easy eating plan for this year’s “SELF CHALLENGE”. And even pizza can be healthy if it’s loaded with vegetables, and you stick to one small piece.   21  Breakfast is one meal I never miss, and the same goes for most weight loss success stories. Research shows that eating breakfast keeps you from overeating later in the day. Researchers at the University of Southem California found that breakfast skippers have a bigger chance of gaining weight than those who regularly have a morning meal.

So eat something in the morning, anything. I know plenty of friends who end up having no breakfast altogether, and have just coffee or orange juice. I say, try heating up last night’s leftovers-it may sound crazy, but if it works for you, do it! I find if I tell myself, “You can always eat it tomorrow,” I put away the leftovers instead of eating more that night. Try it…you may save yourself some pre-bedtime calories. And watch your body gain the fat-burning effects.

The word “leftovers” in Paragraph 1 probably means__________.

A.food remaining after a meal        B. things left undone

 C. meals made of vegetables          D. pizza topped with fruit

What can we infer from the text?

A. Working women usually have breakfast in a hurry.

B. Many people have wrong ideas about breakfast.

C. There are some easy ways of cooking a meal.

D. Eating vegetables helps save energy.

According to the last paragraph, it is important to____________.

A. eat something for breakfast        B. be careful about what you eat

C. heat up food before eating it        D. eat calorie-controlled food

The text is written mainly for those_____________.
