When I was growing up, I always gave my mom an apron (围裙)on her birthday.I wanted my own mom — 21 that apron I'd just given her, of course —to 22 me at the end of each afternoon bearing a plate of home-baked 23 as she waited breathlessly to hear about my 24 day at school.
Mom loved her family without question, but as an elementary-school teacher she had her own exciting days to 25 .She had hardly any extra time and 26 , and home-baked treats were rare in our house except 27 very special occasions.Since Mom didn't make cookies very often, the 28 of her baking were not always the same.Sometimes the cookies were browned a little more than planned or 29 together and other times the cookies weren't smooth. 30 , none of that bothered anyone in the family. All we 31 was swallowing whatever we were having for dinner that night so we could get to the cookies 32 us on the kitchen counter.
Now that I'm a mom myself, I can 33 all too well why my mother didn't always have the time to wear the apron. As was true with my mother, the list of things I need to do is often 34 than the day itself. But I also understand the desire to 35 the same yellow mixing bowl my mother used and make something special for my family every so often.Whatever I bake is met with approval, appreciation and good 36 by my husband and children. At some level, I believe they're 37 that I was thinking about them as I 38 the brown sugar into the butter or frosted the cake with their favorite kind of icing. They always know I love them.I 39 they know it a little better when I'm in a baking mood.
I'm sure my mother felt 40 the same way whenever she made cookies for us.Those cookies will always, in my mind, be the best treat.

Some years ago I was offered a writing assignment that would require three months of travel through Europe.I had been abroad a couple of times, 36 I could hardly claim to know my way around the continent. Moreover, my 37 of foreign languages was 38 to a little college French.
I 39 .How would I,unable to speak the language and totally 40 with local geography or transportation systems, 41 interviews and do research? It seemed 42 ,and with much regret I sat down to write a letter begging 43 .Halfway through,a thought ran through my mind:you can’t learn if you don’t 44 .So I accepted the assignment.
There were some bad news. But by the time I had 45 the trip I was an experienced 46 .And ever since,I have never hesitated to 47 for even the most remote places, without guides or even 48 bookings, confident that somehow I will 49 .
The point is that the new,the 50 ,is almost by definition scary. But each time you try 51 ,you learn, and as the learning piles up,the world 52 to you.
I’ve 53 to ski at 40,and flown up the Rhine River in a balloon. And I know I’ll go on doing such things. It’s not because I’m 54 or more daring than others. I’m not. But I’ll accept anxiety as another name for 55 and I believe I can accomplish wonders.

When I came to my new school three years ago, I was surprised at how lonely I felt. Then one of my classmates invited me to her house for a dinner 36 . I was a little anxious, but finally I gladly 37 .
Not really knowing how 38 the bus ride should be, I 39 when I saw the landmarks 40 on my friend’s hand-drawn map. But when I got close enough to the 41 , I found none of the streets were shown on the map. I was 42 on a busy road with cars driving past without a person in sight. I had no 43 when the next bus would come, 44 when a bus did come by, I 45 got on. I told the bus driver where I wanted to go and he said that I had caught the 46 bus, but he let me stay on. After he had finished his scheduled bus route, he 47 to help me out. I gratefully showed him my little hand-drawn map but 48 did not help much.

At last I made it to the dinner party 53 I was over an hour late.
I am forever thankful for the 54 that this bus driver had for me. His act of kindness left a 55 on my heart.
