An open letter to the GE staff

Dear fellows,

I wanted to write you today about news that GE is being removed from the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA). The DJIA is a 100 year-ago index(指数) that is meant to be a(n)1 sample of American business. It is a largely symbolic index and our inclusion is a function(函数) of our share price relative to others.

That said, GE is the longest-standing member and that is something I have always been proud of. I know all of you have been, too. While we were not aware of the announcement, it is not a total surprise. I have tried at every step to share with you our 2 but also the things we need to improve. That is what we are working on most. Our membership in the Dow is something that 3 our past, not our future.

Let me tell you how I am thinking about this. When I first heard the news, I had the same 4 as all of you probably did. But it quickly triggered my 5 side—the side of me that is deeply rooted in my love and respect for the company.

As a company 6 to technology and making an impact on the world, I would put us up against any company in the world. We 7 1/3 of the world’s electricity and two out of every three flights take off with GE engines. We have the largest install base of life-saving imaging equipment. We are a fundamental part of the day to day life across the globe. The world counts on GE and we are there to answer that 8 .

We have been making hard decision about our company. In life there are only two ways to deal with hard things. One is to give in and give up and the other is to fight. I am more than up for the fight. This is our chance to show the world what we can do—stare into the face of skepticism(怀疑主义) and cynicism(吹毛求疵) about GE and meet it with confidence, pride in the company and a(n)9 amount of hard work and resolve.

I said two things in my annual letter to shareowners: first, it is the people inside the company who shape GE, not the people outside and second, people who bet against us to do so as their own 10 .

Let us use to remind the world that GE is a company that matters to the world. We are going to win this flight.

Thanks for your dedication and hard work.

There is a difference between science and technology. Science is a method of answering theoretical questions; technology is a method of solving 1 problems. Science has to do with discovering the facts and relationships 2 in the observable natural world and with building up theories that serve to organize these facts and relationships; technology has to do with tools, techniques, and methods for carrying out the 3 of science.

Another difference between science and technology has to do with the 4 in each.

Progress in science does not consider the human factor. Scientists make a study of the universe, try to explain the rules of nature and strive to find out the truth. They can 5 pay attention to their own or other people’s likes or dislikes or to popular ideas about the fitness of things. What scientists discover may shock or anger people—as did Darwin’s theory of evolution. But even a(n) 6 truth is more than likely to be useful; besides, we have the choice of refusing to believe it! But hardly so with technology; we do not have the choice of refusing to hear the noises produced by an airplane flying overhead; we do not have the choice of refusing to breathe 7 air; and we do not have the choice of living in a non-atomic age. Unlike science, progress in technology must be 8 in terms of the human factor. Technology must be our slave and not the 9. The purpose of technology is to serve people in general, not merely some people; and future generation, not merely those who presently wish to gain advantage for themselves. Technology must be 10 if it is to lead to a better world.

【题目】Best Ways to Quit Smoking

Not sure how to quit smoking cigarettes? Try the following ways to stop smoking and start your path towards a healthier, smoke-free life.

Post this list in a visible location in your house.

Whenever you’re tempted to light up, take a look at all the ways smoking can damage your health:

● Increases risk of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure.

● Reduces levels of folate, low levels of which can increase the risk of heart disease, depression, and Alzheimer’s disease.

● Affects mental capacity and memory.

● Contributes to thin bones.

● Affects ability to smell and taste.

● Increases risk of depression in adolescents.

To minimize cravings (欲望), change your routine.

Sit in a different chair at breakfast or take a different route to work. If you usually have a drink and cigarette after work, change that to a walk. If you’re used to a smoke with your morning coffee, switch to tea, or stop at Starbucks for a cup of java—the chain is smoke-free. You might even work better in coffee shops

Tell your friends, coworkers, boss, partner, and kids how you feel.

Don’t bottle up your emotions. If something makes you angry, express it instead of hiding it with cigarette smoke. If you’re bored, admit to yourself that you’re bored and find something energetic to do instead of lighting up.

Make an appointment with an acupuncturist (针灸师).

There’s some evidence that auricular acupuncture (i. e., needles in the ears) controls cigarette cravings quite successfully. You can even do it yourself by taping “seeds” (small beads) onto the acupuncture points and squeezing them whenever cravings arise. Acupuncture can treat these other conditions, too.

Gender equality has powerful potential to improve the economy, security and the overall well-being of a population.

“If the world closed the gender gap in workforce1, global [Gross Domestic Product] would increase by 28 trillion dollars by 2025... That’s about a quarter of the world’s current GDP, and almost half of the world’s current debt,” said U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues Catherine Russell in a recent speech. She also noted that “studies have found that countries with less gender inequality are more secure, and peace 2last longer when women are at the negotiating table.”

Nonetheless, no country in the world can 3that it has achieved full gender equality.

“Around the world, women are vastly 4in politics and the workforce, particularly in leadership positions and other high-paying jobs,” said Ambassador Russell. At the same time, women make up the majority of the poor. “I’ve heard people say that poverty has a 5face, and that makes sense when you consider that women control just one-fifth of global wealth,” said Ambassador Russell.

World leaders are beginning to recognize that everyone benefits from 6gender equality, she said. This is why gender equality is part of U.S. foreign policy. A key part of U.S. efforts focus on educating and empowering girls. In the past 18 months, the United States 7its global strategy to empower adolescent girls, as well as Let Girls Learn, which is a Presidential initiative that focuses on educating girls.

We are also working with numerous countries to remove8that keep women from inheriting or owning property, entering the formal job market or accessing banking services.

“Gender equality sometimes looks like an impossible task —a 9without an end,” said Ambassador Russell. “But...we can make progress, and that progress is worth making. Little by little, discussion by discussion, step by step, we can improve the lives of women and girls, men and boys all around the world. And in doing so, we can reach our 10goals of peace, prosperity, and security.”

【题目】Overcoming Obstacles: How Your Biggest Failure Can Lead to Your Success

There’s been a lot written on the theme of failure and how essential it is to success. In a world where 1 is given for people’s accomplishments, failing feels dangerous. The fear of failure can stop people taking risks that might lead to success.

Heidi Grant Halvorson, a psychologist, points out much of success is 2 not on talent but on learning from your mistakes.

About half of the people in the world hold that ability in an area --- be it creative or social skill --- is natural. The other half believes, instead, that someone might have a preference or something --- say painting or speaking foreign languages --- but this ability can be improved through 3 practice or training.

It’s almost impossible to think rationally (理性地) while shouting at yourself, “I’m a failure”. But when you 4 your thinking, you will probably see what you can control --- your behavior, your planning, your reactions --- and change them.

The primary 5 between successful people and unsuccessful people is that the successful people fail more. If you see failure as a monster approaching you, take another look.

Success is as scary as failure. Researchers report that satisfaction grows on challenges. Think about it --- a computer game you can always win is boring; one you can win 6, and with considerable effort, is fun. In pursuit of success, failure exposes areas that you need to 7. So the failure serves as a brick wall to test how you apply yourself to 8 your objectives and how much you want them.

There is a way to distinguish whether a failure 9 you to double down or walk away, says Halvorson. If, when things get rough, you remain fascinated by your goal, you should keep going. If what you’re doing is costing you too much time and energy or it’s not bringing you joy, you should give a second thought to the 10 of your goal and even set a new one.
